"super basic"
The hotel is very basic. Bed, dresser, shower, etc. It was clean, though the shower curtain was moldy. One thing that would make a big difference would be for their shuttle to run downtown/to Old Port. Then the distance (it's about a $10 cab ride) wouldn't seem as big a deal. I very disapointed for the amount of money I spent. There was a dried up dirty washcloth hanging on the shower curtain when I checked in. The bathtub was covered in "someones" hair, private and other. The bed had dirt and hair in the sheets when I pulled them back to go to bed.The following day when they came and refreshed the towels and made the bed, […] they still left the "dirty washcloth" hanging over the shower. "decent place to stay in Portland"
There didn't seem to be much available in Portland last weekend. La Quinta was convenient to my husband's meeting, and also would be convenient to the airport and Maine Medical Center. The neighborhood is not great, but not too bad. The Dogfish Cafe is a couple blocks walk and across from that is a bus stop for the #1 bus route which goes down Congress […] St, turns around and comes back the same way. That will get you pretty close to almost anywhere you want to go in the city. Buses ran about every 20 minutes on Saturday. Driving is a little crazy with 1 way streets, but parking is not expensive. "Great staff - funny smelling room"
The first room that I was in had a very bad smell. It was as though there had been a wet dog in it and the odor was being masked by rug cleaner. It started to give me a headache. "Won't go back"
The staff were extremely polite and helpful. They helped me call a cab, recommended a nice restauarant and answered the numerous questions I had for them. However, the area is not as nice as the hotel staff seemed to think and I quickly regretted my decision to walk a nearby restaurant as it became clear that the hotel isn't in the nicest of areas. […] I soon had someone following me on the other side of the street loudly muttering and shouting bizarre comments to me and the corner by the restaurant did seem to be a hangout for the homeless. My room smelled like two-hundred wet gym socks and no amount of holding the door open or airconditioning helped. The source of the smell was unclear but, as the floorboards in the bathroom were badly warped, I suspect that a previous flood had occurred and the smell was coming from the floor. It was the last room in the Inn and I had no option but to stick with the room. The hotel is also near the train tracks and twice the noise from the train was distracting. I used this hotel for a business trip. The location is convenient to the Interstate, but it seems a bit out of the way--almost industrial. There was plenty of parking, and overall, the area seemed safe. The room was clean, but just functional--not the least bit pretty or luxurious. Breakfast is adequate--waffles, youghurt, toast, cereal--but the breakfast room is too small, and it is poorly laid out. It's impossible to eat a meal there without getting bumped into repeatedly. There's a computer in the lobby for use by guests, and free WiFi in the rooms. The desk chair is the worst--it looks like it belongs poolside--so this isn't the best place for a business person who needs a good workspace. This hotel is clean and quiet, but purely functional. "There on Prom Night"
I was at the hotel on Prom Night. There was a great deal of noise after midnight. I had to be pretty forceful about the problem to get it resolved. At that point, the police were called and the hotel was very quiet after that. Every other night was quiet as well. Aside from Prom Night, this was a nice place to stay. The free breakfast was better than […] most hotels and the staff was polite and professional. The rooms are nicely updated and more comfortable than what you might expect for the price. The place isn't right downtown but if you're in good shape, it's only a 25 minute walk or a short drive. There's on site coin operated laundry which was handy. There's a Dollar Store only a few blocks away along with a grocery store and a Subway sandwich shop. This seemed to be the best value in Portland when I was there.
