"Nice hotel, rude staff"
The hotel is very clean and the rooms updated and spacious. However, we were on a higher floor and the poor sealing of the windows made the room drafty, not to mention loud, when the wind blew. However my biggest complaint is that most of the staff we encountered were unhelpful or downright rude. (The restaurant servers are an exception.) Very poor service. I had to ask four times for them to turn the heat on in the exercise room at 11AM on Sunday. Someone finally came over at 11:30 and the problem still wasn't fixed. My internet was out and it couldn't be restored and their business center consisted of one computer in the main lobby which was in constant use. "Expensive but good location"
The hotel is overpriced because of its proximity to the T and downtown Boston. They are "in the midst of renovations, so they had all the snack machines removed". They did not have snack machines last year either. The dining room needs to commit to more attentive service and a wider choice of meals offered later into the evening and change the menu […] more . The dining room is well situated, given the lack of restaurants in the area, although I have never seen more than 4 parties in there at one time and it is harshly lit, wide open with poor service. Perhaps changing the layout of the dining room with some screens, putting in some softer lighting, will create an illusion of comfort and not of a school cafeteria, and obscure the underutilization of the restaurant to newcomers. The hotel is a comfortable place to park (especially in Somerville where you can be ticketed if you do not have a parking permit) and to sleep and the staff are courteous and helpful, but the ambience in the lobby is limited to a wide screen TV. There is no 24 hour coffeepot in the lobby and apples in bowls are the only snacks, ever. The bar does not seem to serve food. It was fine. It was a short trip - we arrived on a Tuesday around lunchtime. Left the hotel quickly after checking in to go to the Tufts campus, returned Tuesday night before dinner, went back out for dinner in Medford (Davis Square), and returned to sleep. We felt The Holiday Inn Somerville provided a merely adequate service during our stay. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful; however, the rest of the service was not impressive and efficient. The room was small and had a stale smell. We traveled with three children; we requested a roll away bed in our room and paid for it in advance. While […] on arrival night, the front desk staff had to make three calls to get someone responsible to bring the bed to our room. Once the bed was rolled into the room; the staff was not prepared to set up the bed for us. I had to ask him to do so. The service of the hotel’s restaurant was slow as well. Another incidence was that the day after we checked out; my son realized that he left his sunglasses in the room. Since we were still in the area; we called the hotel’s lost and found. It took a while for us to actually speak to someone there; their response was really slow. The only happy ending was that we did get the sunglasses back. We really wanted a non-smoking room but when we booked we were told they were sold out. The breakfast was included in the price of the room which we could either get the buffet or off the menu, as well as free parking and free wi-fi, a big bonus.
