"Generally our stay was a disaster."
Our party booked two rooms. In our room we took a pet that we couldn't leave behind. Generally the stay was a disaster. There was some recent renovation downstairs, but our rooms and floor looked quite out of date. I'm never too bothered about that really, but it is worth noting because I think dated hotels aren't keeping up with the competition. I […] should point out it was clean regardless. These are the issues we had at this hotel. General: When we arrived we were advised that the 'pet deposit' wasn't refundable. A little bit of a dispute broke out obviously but I felt the staff dealing with this were a little smart and smarmy about it. Admittedly this smarm was somewhat in relation to a prior conversation about the need for a credit card when there was no intention to put room service and incidentals on the credit card...but learning they needed the card for the pet deposit was met with this... 'Ah you see we do need your credit card. I told you we needed it.' a) At the prior point of telling me she 'needed the card' she had no knowledge that we were checking a cat in. I think holding this new fact up as validation of some prior unrelated point was a little bit nervy and inappropriate. b) A Pet Deposit is hardly an 'incidental'...it's certainly not a reason to back up a point about the need for cards for 'incidentals'. c) I hadn't denied the card. I had just expressed that I didn't agree with the common policy to ask/retain a card # for 'incidentals' when there was no intention on my part to buy anything in the hotel (and there's no mini-bar anyway). I am very protective of my credit card # for fraud reasons, hence my concerns with these policies. This was explained. Room 1: 1) The pet deposit is not a deposit, despite being advertised as such. Deposits are refundable and it turned out not be refundable. So by definition it's a fee not a deposit. I have stayed in this hotel several times previously and have always enjoyed the view and location. This time there was a major overhaul taking place of the lobby, elevator, and outside area near the pool. It was disappointing but the construction noise was limited to "working hours". I stayed at this hotel probably 20 years ago. It is older but seems to be in decent shape. The pool, although modest, was fun, with a live band, a small poolside bar, and sufficient chairs.
