Hotel Chelsea Chelsea - East and West Villages

A short guide to Chelsea - East and West Villages

Washington Square, surrounded by NYU, divides the Villages. On one side, Greenwich and West villages lure writers and artists with its bohemian ethos, best experienced at a coffeehouse or jazz bar. The other side—the ethnically mixed East Village—is known for live music. For its string of nightclubs, Chelsea’s West 27th Street is known as Club Row. Chelsea is also the city’s main gay neighborhood.

We had such a great time in New York this past weekend and we were lucky to get to stay at the Hotel Chelsea. The art alone in the hotel will blow your mind - it's EVERYWHERE. The rooms are small and the paint is chipping and things haven't been updated in a while, but you don't stay at the Hotel Chelsea for luxury, you stay there for the history and to sleep where such amazing artists, musicians and screenwriters stayed. You could walk around for hours in that place just to see the art. The staff was super friendly and helpful and available. I would recommend staying here is you're a fan of art/music/poetry/etc. We will stay there again, for sure!

I stayed in the hotel for 3 nights from Oct 6 and i checked out at 10:00AM. Before my departure from the hotel to the airport at 7;30PM the day, I asked the staff member if I can use their toilet room. The staff member replied since I was no longer the hotel guest and there are no public toilet rooms, so my request cannot be granted. i told home that I was the guest of this hotel form 3 nights and there is a long journey from the hotel to the airport, Then he said Ok, you go to 2nd floor, there is one piblic toilet room. I ran to the 2nd floor but the door is locked, I knocked and there is no one answer. I ran to the front desk requesting for the key. the staff member told me---the door is locked and it is not his fault, he cannot help me neither. i traveled a lot, I have never been humilated by a hotel staff like Hotel Chelsea.

A lot of reviews on here let on like this place was a dump. It was the most amazing hotel I've ever stayed in. It was old, but it was VERY CLEAN. Our room had clean beds and towels, an air conditioner, a new television, and 2 french doors that went out to a balcony. They'll even park your car. Even from the 2nd floor, the view was amazing (and the street noise wasn't bad at all). This hotel is over 100 years old, it is not a chain, and it is rated as a 2 star hotel. There was no pool, breakfast, or ice machines waiting for us. This is a place for those who know of the Chelsea, its history, and appreciate art and old buildings. It truly is a rock n roll hotel. If a little cracked plaster and a 100 year old bathtub gives you the willies, then this isn't for you. And, may I add, get over yourself. As for the people who live here, they weren't "scary" (as one commenter put it). We can't all be beautiful people from the upper class suburbs, now can we? We spent 2 nights here just wondering the halls looking around the building and at the art that was displayed. I will definitely return. It was an amazing experience.

If you've heard of this place, but never stayed, I'd highly recommend it. It is unbelievably funky, but it's super clean, the staff was amazingly friendly and accommodating all around the clock. The place is loaded with bohemian art, some really great, some not so great, but the vibe of the place is wonderful. To be honest, I took one look at my room, and wanted to leave, it was dilapidated and crummy, and smelled. But I sat down, and for some reason, really started liking the place. I can't really describe it, but there's just a great energy that was there. Even though it is dilapidated, it's totally clean, and I wasn't even aware of any smell within about 10 minutes of being there. I felt warm, comfortable, and secure the entire time. The Hilton IT IS NOT, but it never claims to be. Would I stay there again? Probably not, but only because the neighborhood is kind of hot, grimy New York, and I'd prefer a bit more up town clean. Plus even though there are tons of little food shops and joints, by and large the food is generally crummy in the neighborhoood. Having said that, around the corner is a cafe called "Eros" that serves a KILLER breakfast for about 7 bucks. Not to be beat in NYC.

I always wanted to check out this iconic hotel and it did not disappoint. From the funky lobby to artwork throughout the hotel, it is apparent you are not in your typical hotel as soon as you enter. Reception was courteous and accommodating. The room was a little threadbare, but I had French doors that opened to the cast iron balcony along 23rd. Bathroom was clean with good linen service. Everything was a little quirky, some might argue “sub-par” but that was part of its charm. If you want antiseptic, go to a chain. If you want to channel the spirit of Jim Morrison and experience a true NYC legend, hit the Chelsea.

Filthy, dirty and unhealthy conditions from the lobby to the room are the environment of the hotel. The washroom was absolutely disgusting, the shower tub did not drain, there was peeling paint, and mildew over much of the wall around the tub and sink, and exposed pipes sticking out from the wall. The room was small with old, mismatched second hand furniture, the desk chair was broken, the door lock was hard to use, the rooms are not carpeted and echo for sounds and noises. The halls smelled musty and incense was burning to mask the smell. There are permanent tenants who live there and they are noisy and rude, and if you encounter one, they are scary individuals. We arrived late and stayed one night and then walked away, the only upside was it gave us a story to tell for many years to come on how we survived a night at that spooky place. Do not make the mistake of staying there.

Yes the hotel is old and the place is funky with tons of artwork, but our room was huge. Nice curtains, cool art deco furniture. BUT the hot water took forever to reach our room so actually wasted a ton of water. TV did not get every channel clearly, but only watched some tv in morning while getting ready to leave. So over all we enjoyed and the location was perfect between two subway stops.

A coffee maker would have been nice , since we had a kitchenette, but what we learned is you just need to ask and they probably have it. At least three times the size of our next room in town. Would recommend to anyone who wants to experience art and cultural history (without even leaving the building) and some of the residents were a hoot. Felt extremely safe there, and baggage hold is always a nice feature.

Staying at this hotel is truly a great experience from the perspective of staying at a historic, artsy and fun place that is also at a great location. However, for the price paid, the rooms are a bit rundown. The doors open/close with difficulty, the heaters are noisy and you can hear each time someone else opens or closes the door at another room. This does contribute to the entire experience of staying at a hotel that is over 100 years old with lots of history, but it might not be the best cup of tea for everyone. For NY though, this is a great choice.

Convenient location, very nice staff. Don't stay here if you're looking for "luxury," because it's an old hotel! Lots of street noise in my 2nd floor room, but I didn't mind.

We didn't go to the Chelsea for a 4 star room, we went for the ambiance and the knowledge of who had stayed there before us. It was everything we could have hoped for. It was an awesome experience! The staff was very friendly and actually printed us directions on how to get home. I will definitely go back!

My stay at the Hotel Chelsea exceeded my expectations. The staff was friendly and knowlegdable. The rooms were beautiful, glamorous and comfortable. (I was there with a group and we had 3 rooms between us.) The lobby and stairwell were full of beautiful art, paintings and sculpture, and lovely furnishings, marble floors and woodwork. My room, 105, had a fireplace with a large gilded mirror above it, high ceilings, window seats, its own foyer with a marble topped table, wood floors, a pretty carpet, stylish curtains and bedspread. The bathroom had new looking mosaic sage green tile and white fixtures. Everything was clean and nice. (The only thing that wasn't tip top was the woodwork, which was layered with paint and sometimes a little bit chipped or grimy around the doorknobs. Minor issue for me!) It fronted on 23rd St and we had a balcony to go out on and admire the street view. Another party of our group had room 325. They had French doors out to their balcony which was right next to the big hotel sign. One of the door had a stained glass panel at the top. Everything in their room was also clean. Curtains, rods and bedspreads seemed new and fashionable in both rooms. All 3 rms also had tiled kitchenettes and large closets. The hotel hallways were paved with marble! The friendly doorman, when told that we'd come to NY to see Eddie Izzard perform (British actor/comedian), informed us Eddie lived in Rm 325 when he was there with his standup act, and also filming Velvet Goldmine in 1998. That was a big thrill for us. The stairwell, which is 10 floors, was probably the best part of the hotel. Take the elevator up to the top where there is a skylight and walk down. Bring your camera. The railings are wrought iron and there are beautiful paintings on all the walls, and many more on the hallway walls as well. Amazing! The location of the Chelsea is great too, convenient to all parts of Manhattan. We took the nearby subway or walked to get around town. I'd go b

Top tip, make sure you get a refurbished room as our first room was basic to say the least - but they moved us and the next room was great. The rooms have kitchenette's and fridges as there are no catering services in the hotel - you have to bring all food in! The hallway and stairs are awesome - loads of amazing paintings. The whole place is full of interesting characters and the staff are great. If you want top of the range facilities don't go anywhere near. However if you want atmosphere and character its a great place in an excellent location. Is it was good enough for Arthur Miller, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Jack Kerouac, Dylan Thomas and Brendan Behan - it was good enough for me!

This hotel was run down with paint peeling off of the bathroom ceiling. The interior smelled of smoke. The overall condition was not in a class with what a 3.5 star hotel should be. I was very disappointed because I chose to pay more and walk further to my destination because this hotel had a higher star rating that others. My colleagues at another hotel had much better accommodations. I would have not been so disappointed if the hotel had a star rating of 1 or 2 stars instead of 3.5. I hope to have better luck next time I'm in NYC.

The outstanding art collection surrounds you as you enter the lobby through doors framed by historical markers. Thomas Wolfe, one of my all time favorite writers, lived out his last days at the hotel, and the place oozes creativity. Dog lovers abound, as the hotel gladly houses our furry friends along with their human owners. The room was large, but basic, kind of dusty and in need of renovation. The location in Chelsea can't be beat, with the Gotham comedy club next door and a thriving club below the hotel. The place still attracts artists, musicians, film crews, and the like. More bohemian than luxury, but if that is what you want, this place has it.
