I have read about the Catalina for several years and really wanted to give it a try. Pleasantly surprised! Every night we dined at either of their two restaurants, both good a priced accordingly considering SoBe is truly expensive. My husband and I booked the standard room but were upgraded on arrival to the Dorset King – loved the décor. I suggest you shop on Lincoln Road which is just a few blocks south but runs from one end of the beach to the other.

Staff is nice enough if you are nice to them. We had a standard room wich was ok. The photos make the rooms look amazing but when you get there, they look the same but you see where corners were cut...it just looks a little cheaper than it does in the photos - but still nice! We ended up upgrading to a nicer room which was great! The bed was very comfortable and it was nice having the extra space for our stuff. There were little things that didn't work - the remote for the tv, the shower wasn't draining and the toilet paper holder was falling off the wall - but nothing major though. The room was clean and quite and there were black out currents to keep the light and heat out...and the AC in - which was amazing at the end of the day and in the AM. The eleavator was really old and smells of oil and natural gas, nothing to unbearable but not very pleasent either - stay on the first floor if you can. The hotel is not loud so you wont have to worry about not being able to get enough sleep. Vallet parking is about twice as much as they advertise online - it was posted online $15 for all day vallet parking but when we got there they said it would be $30. Good place to stay but we ended up moving over to Espanola Way and staying in a hostel/hotel over there for less and we were perfectley happy there - better atmosphere :)

We enjoyed our stay here, but it had nothing to do with the hotel, strangely. Just recognize that the hotel's greatest strength is its location, location, location... everything else is secondary. In other words, set expectations fairly low and you may be (somewhat) surprised. We were skittish based on other reviews, mainly horror stories from Yelp, and though we escaped without accumulating any of our own, I could see where issues could crop up (i.e., not the cleanest hotel, personal service definitely lacking, mostly a young, partying crowd, etc.). In a word, DECENT.

Upon arrival, the staff was rude, and acted as if we were inturrupting their day. We parked to check in and freshen up and when we went to get the car we were told there was a $25 parking fee. Don't sign up for any tour at the hotel. We took a "Biscayne Bay By Boat" tour and The hotel Catalina doubled the price and we were stuck on a "shuttle" that makes many stops and was'nt there when the tour was over. We could have taken a cab and still saved 1/2 the price. Also when we found metered parking around the hotel, the hotel staff refused to give us change! The hotel staff was consistantly rude and acted annoyed. The hotel has "free" bikes to use with an unposted "late return" fee! We extended our stay but I would never ever stay there again.

This is my 3rd stay at the catalina and its still the perfect hotel to jump in and out of for long stays or just a weekend trip to south beach. The staff is always extremely helpful and the location is perfect. Not too far from ocean drive and not too close to all the chaos. Walking distance to all the clubs and right across the street from the beach. Its also affordable for those that cant spend the big bucks on the facier hotels, which honestly arent that big a deal. Ive stayed at the Delano, Setai, Double Tree and a few others and the catalina is still one of my top 5 choices for whenever I make a trip to south beach. The rooms could use an update, but then again, it is the art deco district, so I shouldnt complain about the decor. The bathroom is a bit small, but compared to the Delano, its huge. The pool isnt amazing, but you have the beach right across the street if you really need to work on your tan.
