MOST IMPORTANT - Bring SUNSCREEN with you. It's $33 USD at the shop in the hotel. Bring some kind of AQUA-SHOE if you want to go in the ocean. There are lots of shells and rocks in the surf and I saw two people getting first aid for cuts to their feet. Bug spray in the evening is a must as the mosquitoes are formidable. If you like turtles, read on.
We chose this resort mostly due to the load of good reviews it got here. My review will be a bit long, but the short version is: If you are looking for a pretty place to hang out by the pool or the beach and drink all day, this is the spot for you. If you want to actually swim in the ocean or are picky about your food or get upset at housekeeping issues, you may want to look elsewhere.
The resort is not in downtown Playa del Carmen but rather, north of it. You'll have to drive or take a cab about 20 minutes to get downtown or the ferry to Cozumel.
Overall, you could not ask for a nicer staff. Even with such a large staff, each employee was great, without exception.
The food was on par with what you'd expect at just an okay wedding reception. We tried the Asian Fusion, French, and Mexican restaurants. All were just a little disappointing except the Mexican. Real margaritas would have been nicer, rather than made with too-sweet margarita mix. Keep in mind we live in NYC and might be a little bit spoiled when it comes to good food. The wait and bar staffs were great. We liked them much more than the food. The buffet breakfast was extensive, but kind of mediocre. For lunch at Tierra, my girlfriend had a so-called kobe beef burger that was worse than McDonald's.
If you read some of the other reviews, you will see a common theme of breakdown in management. We experienced certain activities either not occurring, or being mis-scheduled. Though some efforts were made to appease us, we felt somewhat frustrated like we were getting the runaround. Not all the activities staff had a sense of what was going on. The yoga/chi kung...More

Mayan Palace Wyndham Riviera Maya Resort
The hotel and resort were awesome - I can't complain -but the beach was all rocks or an extension of the Mayan Reef, something we did not expect. My family stayed mostly at the huge pool, we did play soccer on the beach - the sand is beautiful, it's just the entrance to the water. I asked several folks about this and the responses varied, like Hurricaine Wilma wiped out their beach - but I'm told beaches at other hotels are not like this. I ased a local guide about it, and he said that Mayan Palace has always had a rocky beach - he tried to run snorkeling excursions out of there, but he couldn't because of the rocks....More
