Shanghai JC Mandarin
I agree with most reviewers. It's not a 5 star hotel but it's a pleasant place to stay. Everyone was really friendly. No language problem for the basics. I'll review a few things not mentioned by other guests.
They have a great July-August special with free breakfast and internet. Internet was fast and breakfast was great - Chinese and Western. Everything else about the hotel was really expensive, drinks in the lounge especially, 7 bucks for a can of pepsi or Evian.
The superior, deluxe, grand, and standard club rooms are all the same. The only difference is you pay more to be higher. I was in room 1212 one trip and 2108 the next. The top 3 floors are club rooms which give you entry to the executive room on the 2nd floor.
The beds were really comfortable. Water pressure in the shower was good. 50 TV stations with at least 6 in English.
Guests have free access to the pool on the 4th floor.
It's an 8 minute walk from the Nanjing Road West subway, Line 2. Leave by exit 1 & turn left. Don't have to cross Nanjing road. It's a 10 minute walk from the Jing An Temple subway stop. Take Exit 2 & head straight. You'll have to cross Nanjing road sometime. There is a grocery store on the way out of the Jing An Temple stop. If you are coming from PuDong airport, for 40 RMB you can take the bullet train (431 km/h top speed, 7 minute trip) to Long Yan Road station, which is directly above Line 2 subway, then a 4 RMB subway ticket to the Nanjing Road west stop. It's less than an hour if you don't wait too long for the bullet train.
Taxi runs 150-160 RMB and takes 45 minutes at best and 90 minutes during rush hour. Print out the hotel name and address in Chinese to show the taxi driver.
If you use the subway alot buy an electronic debit pass so you don't have to figure out the fares every trip.
A McDonald's and Starbucks are a block east of the hotel and across the street.
If you take the subway to the Nanjing road east stop there is a nice shopping ar...More
