    Best Western Phuket Ocean Resort
The Best Western Phuket Ocean Resort falls short of being a "resort," but it is a very pleasant hotel along the lines of Best Western hotels everywhere. The location is convenient, near the beach, with ocean views from the rooms and the restaurant -- although the view from the restaurant is partly obstructed by utility wires. A large lagoon and a road separate the hotel from the beach. The staff indicated that the lagoon absorbed the surge from the tsunami (tidal wave) of last year, and the hotel had no damage at all from the wave. The hotel staff speaks English well enough to attend to basic needs, and goes out of their way to be helpful. Everyone is very friendly and polite. The overall level of English language ability is somewhat limited when more complex issues need to be discussed, although we were able to set up tours and activities with little difficulty. Wireless internet service and in-room internet service is not offered, but several internet terminals are available in the lobby for a reasonably hourly rate. The hotel has three swimming pools of various sizes and depths, so poolside space for sunning and relaxing is adequate even when the hotel is full. The on-site casual dining restaurant is reasonably good and reasonably priced (not "cheap" as many travelers expect from Thailand, but reasonable), and does not seem to be particularly busy during lunch or supper hours. The restaurant is VERY busy during breakfast, probably because an American/European style breakfast buffet is provided with the cost of the room. The hotel is within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, Karon beach, and taxi stops. This particular hotel is very popular with visitors from Sweden. As is the case with much of Phuket, different "neighborhoods" seem to cater to certain nationalities. While most of the guests seemed to be European, the language used to communicate is English. While the amenities are nice enough in a "family hotel" sort of way, as I mentioned, this...More

    Asia Don Muang Hotel
The Asia Airport meets need for a night's sleep before a flight. Unfortunately it is not that close to airport. The shuttle was effective though, so it worked well for us. This hotel has not been remodeled in at least 20 years but our room was very large and we had no problems. Shopping is right there, but it is mostly a large electronics mall....More

    Millennium Hilton Bangkok
The hotel concierge staff is amazing. They were able to secure for me reservations at some great restaurants and also helped me attend a muythai boxing match, which was very interesting. The hotel has a great gym and pool and the rooms are very comfortable. The hotel recently underwent a modernization and the end result is quite striking. My sole complaint about the hotel is the fact it is on the other side of the river. This makes for long trips into downtown Bangkok at times, especially at night. The hotel does have a boat service to ford the river, but it does not run all night and the area where it drops you off is not very close to much. Additionally, once there, you are prey to the cab drivers who seemingly all want to take you to a massage parlor. (I am a white male traveling by myself, so perhaps this is different for people in groups, etc., but it was tiring. The cabs from the hotel were much better about this.) In the end, if you are coming to Bangkok and not planning to go out a lot at night, this is a great hotel and has all the amenities one could desire and then some. Plus, as mentioned, the concierge staff is significantly better than most I have experienced....More
