"Affordable accommodation with a great location"
The hotel was everything I expected it to be for the rate we paid. Staff were friendly, service was efficient and the room was clean (albeit extremely small). Great hotel to explore Amsterdam from!
Prestations correctes, accueil sympathique, chambres propres.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Think twice about this hotel"

Easy to get to (5 euros for bus 197 to Leidsplein) great location for walking to the major tourist attractions. And now... Extremely small rooms for the hotel rates charged (and they charged my card immediately which was not supposed to happen!!!) and there is a an additional surtax which made this rate extremely high for the quality of the room. No air conditioning ( and this is a hotel???) and hence mold in the bathroom (I have mold allergies ...sigh)! No coffee/tea maker in the room! Pillow/mattress although clean was quite mediocre for the price I was charged! Staff was friendly and kind, outdoor garden which was lovely in the single hour when not inhabited by smokers. I was hoping for a much better experience...sadly Amsterdam was amazing, hotel experience not so amazing.

As evey year for many years we come to this small (34 small rooms) central hotel. This year the Owl changed owners....the only difference we notice were the new electronic keys and a slightly better breakfast assortment. Rest unchanged....Rooms are very small but clean. Crazy to have bath tubs in such small bathrooms, they should only have showers. They say price will go up (a lot?) if so, we'll change place. Too bad.

Location is great, very easy to come from the Airport with the bus 197 (5 euros ticket), you get of at Leidsplein, the hotel is just behind the Marriot hotel, just walk by the left side (of the Marriot). It is 2 minutes from Leidsplein where you can find restaurants, shops and all the trams for the Dam and central station (trams no 2 and 5) etc. But you can also walk to the Dam, it is about 20 minutes. The museum quarter is much closer, so is the Vondel park. There is an elevator. Everybody there is very kind and friendly. My room, a single one, was very clean, and so was the bathroom, and the bed was very comfortable. There is shampoo and bath wash in the bathroom, not those little bottles you find in other hotels, but a big one, that was fine with me. There was also a headcup and a shoe-polish. I could open the window for fresh Air. I think there is not air condition but Amsterdam was very cold and with much rain the days i was there, so this was not a problem. The wifi was not always good but it didn't really bother me, after all there is a computer with very good Internet Connection in the lobby and you can use it for Free. The breakfast is simple but plenty and fresh. There is a lovery garden where guests can have breakfast when the weather is fine. When you enter the hotel, there is a machine where you can buy water, chokolates and other refresments. And there is a very nice and friendly cat. I would stay there again. The price was very reasonable, hotels in Amsterdam are very-very expensive.
"The worst hotel I've stayed in!"

Ok, to make it simple, let us start with the pros. Well, the location is really good, leidseplein, which is basically the center of the main tourist attractions. And that is simply it. Now, with the cons. The rooms are microscopic, literally! The bathroom doesn't have a lock and that too is really small. If we sum it up, there is no way two people can stay in this room together. Anyways, the mattress and the pillows are of third class quality, which means poor sleep quality. There is no air conditioning, no coffee/tea maker and cold nights are the worst! Basically, this is the type of quality you would get in a poor hostel. That is totally fine, but have you even calculated what you would be expected to pay for THIS?? Yes, isn't $140 a BIT TOO MUCH for THIS, per room, per night??? The given rating us futher dragged down by the pathetic service. This hotel is not family friendly, so expect a terrible stay if your family will stay here. So I hope I helped, but the choice really is yours. Don't let this hotel ruin your vacation.
"Owl my favorite in Amsterdam!"

New management, same ol' Owl. Sweet location on quiet street near museums, tasty breakfast served late, lovely garden, excellent multi-lingual staff and clean, cosy rooms. Front desk got me e-tickets for Rijksmuseum to skip line. Thanks Owl!
"Good hotel in quiet area"
08/15/14 Barbara B Gympie, Australia
We stayed here at the end of June and found this to be a good hotel and as we asked for a quiet room were given one overlooking the patio and garden. While not luxurious, this was a well run family hotel within walking distance of good restaurants - ask about the Indonesian restaurant and also the Italian a short walk away. The bed was comfortable and although the room was not airconditioned (not many older Europen hotels are) the open window provided plenty of air. The room was not large, but very clean with an adequate bathroom. Very pleasant helpful owners and staff. Breakfast was of a good standard. The location is great for going to museums but needs a taxi ride to and from the railway station. Perhaps some of the poor reviews were from people not used to staying in small European hotels. This is very good value for money in a very expensive city.
"Nothing but the Location..."

Writing this review in the hotel right now actually. Well lets start with the positive: the location is the best. That's it. Okay, now with the negatives: 1) room has certain flaws. The bathroom is really small PLUS the lock doesn't work. So you hold the door all the way in this tiny room. The beds are really uncomfortable. The pillows and mattresses are of poor quality. Overall The room is really small and has no fridge! 2) breakfast is so not worth 10 euros! Only the basics (eggs, milk, cheese etc) are provided. No omlete, no fried eggs, no pancakes, waffles etc. 3) staff is friendly, except for a few. Say, one woman with an arrogant attitude behaving badly and *just wanting you to get out*. Overall, its not worth staying for the enormous amount you're paying. I hope this helps.
The features of this hotel are really completely black and white. Let's start with the positive. Location is excellent. A quiet area yet very close to the most famous museums and canal tours and just a 20 minutes stroll to city center. You even have the streets with all the high end brands only 5 minutes away. Perfect actually. The staff is extremely friendly. They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and the genuinely felt bad over a mishap we had caused by a third party supplier. Almost like a family feeling which is rarely seen in Northern Europe. Big plus. The rooms however are very different and it is really a big problem that there is no aircon in the summer. We had two rooms on the top floor. One had a nice bathroom and big windows which we has to have open all night to survive the heat. The other room however had the washing place next to the bed and only a small toilet/shower. The windows were also small and impossible to get a decent airflow. In other words, two of us were satisfied while the other two had two horrible nights with very little sleep because of the heat (and can you then believe that there was a supplier fixing the window - which as mentioned was open - already before 8am giving the ladies a real scare). Finally want to mention the breakfast. Very simple but it had all the things you need to survive. The kids were at least happy.
"Good location - shabby room"

To begin on a positive note, the hotel is in a good location for the main museums and galleries, is of smart external appearance and has reasonable public rooms and pleasant small garden. The breakfast was adequate, but no more. However our bedroom was shabby and the lack of air conditioning on a hot summer's night at the top of this tall building, meant we had to sleep with all windows and curtains wide open, vulnerable to the local mosquito population and exposed to light and noise. There was a small fan provided, but this simply circulated very warm air. The TV was rather oddly located at ceiling level, immediately above the main window, meaning that curtains had to be closed to see it clearly and the rather small room safe (too small for a lap top or similar) was fixed at floor level, so to access it, meant lying flat on the floor. The double bed was in fact two singles, pushed together, but not fixed - not over conducive to romantic activity! Shampoo was not provided automatically, initially told to go and buy our own , but later some was provided. The room was clean.
