"Incredible Location and Super Clean"
The Santa Cruz is located right next to the Plaza Mayor, the most central location in Madrid. It's walkable to all major attractions. To get in, simply ring the bell and the checkin was seamless and very friendly. There's a living room that faces the square which is quite nice. The room was small but spotless. The window lead to a small courtyard without […] a view but perfectly reasonable for the price. The hallways were a bit dark at night but it wasn't a big deal since the entrances are secured. The front desk also arranged airport transportation which was easy and a bargain at 9 euros. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"great value in great location"
I stayed at the Hostal Santa Cruz for a week. The room with ensuite, air conditioning and tv was very clean. The personal is very friendly and speak basic English. The location is great only one minute from plaza Mayor and la Latina area. The cafeterias on the plaza are great for breakfast, drink and to enjoy the sun, also very friendly service and […] fair price. I would recommend the Santa Cruz to friends and will surely stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Best Location in Madrid and Pet Friendly"
07/29/14 littlebombs Rota, Spain
This was my second trip to Madrid in two months so I knew exactly which area I wanted to stay in and Hostel Santa Cruz is the most centrally located Hostel, the Best Prices and extremely Clean. We also brought our chihuahua and this hostel is Pet Friendly. The cold Air Conditioner and Clean Shower was much appreciated after long days of walking through the city streets in July. The room has a nice, flat screen television if you get the time but walking out the door of the Hostel is where the best entertainment awaits. Having forgotten my personal soaps, I was pleasantly surprised to find shower gels and a small bar of soap in the bathroom. We slept peacefully as the rooms block the sound from the busy plazas below. Plaza del Mayor is about 100 meters from the front door, Mercado San Miguel is just a walk across the Plaza and the Royal Palace was about a 10 min walk. There are hundreds of places to eat but we enjoyed eating breakfast just around the corner at Mimis. I am planning a return trip to Madrid and I am thankful that I will not have to do my research again on places to stay because I will gladly return to Hostel Santa Cruz.
"Return visit to Hostal Santa Cruz, Madrid"

Our third visit to this lovely small hotel, from 12th-15th June . . . as ever it is hard to beat at 55 euros per room, per night, with an unrivalled central Madrid location between the main Sol square and the spectacular Plaza Mayor. The rooms are small but spotless, boasting excellent air con. and also very decent HD televisions . . . should you feel the need for one. No dining facilities, but not a problem as a host of cafes within a five-minute walk! Just a couple of minor gripes . . . they encourage you to save water in the bathrooms, but ours had no plug so the water had to be run for a wet shave; and the basin water was permanently hot!! But that's just minor . . . . for a 'no frills' base in the centre of a capital city the location and price are unbeatable . . . we'll be back.
"Great location, clean rooms, and very friendly staff"

I've never stayed in a hostal before so it took a little getting used to. The single rooms that myself and my son had are small and very basic, and the bathrooms are also very small, but they are very clean and serviced daily. I am really pleased with the location, it is so close to everything we have been able to walk everywhere. The staff are very friendly. English is barely spoken (this seems to be very common in Madrid) but we have been able to communicate well enough. They also have a nice little common area and quite good wi-fi. If you are happy with a clean basic room at a very good price in an awesome location then you'll be happy here, I certainly was!
"Spotless 2 stars room in 5 stars location"

We stayed 2 weekend nights in this hostal. The location is super convenient and beautiful. Easy to reach from sol metro station and a few steps away from the beautiful plaza mayor. Lots of restaurants and bars at walking distance, but set away from the noisy streets. The room was small, but had all necessary comforts and was extremely clean as the rest of the hostel. I could see the staff taking good care of the cleaning all day. Internet connection was working properly, although not at high speed. I could not rate it higher, as the shutters are old and the first night we were unable to roll then down. As we reported it, this was immediately fixed. I recommend it to everyone.
"Great location. Great price"

I stayed one night here on an overnig in Madrid. It was easy to get to from airport. Take the Yellow bus to Atocha and the blue 32 or 26 to near sana cruz a small but clean room on 2nd floor (US 3rd floor) there was an elevator. My friend and I paid 45 euros. The staff was so helpful in changing out car pick up location. For a budget hotel it is a perfect choice.
"Great Location, Real Neighborhood"

Rooms aren't large, and I understand the difference between a "Hotel" and a "Hostal" has to do with amenities--so no breakfast and minimal freebies in the room. Elevator! It's a great value since our room was spotless and we had a little balcony from which we could watch the comings and goings on the street below and on Plaza Santa Cruz. It is a lively location--lots of shops within a block (including a great little mini-mart where one can buy fresh fruit, bread, instant coffee, etc.), and real people living across the street and nearby. The location can't be beat--easy walking to Sol, Plaza Mayor, and not too far from museums, parks, and the palace. Other hotels may be more luxurious, but have the feeling of a business conference center. This hotel has a much more "homelike" feeling, which is what we look for. It doesn't hurt that the price is definitely right! The only downside was the garbage collection every morning before dawn--the rumbling and banging could be heard in the room, even through the balcony doors and the privacy shade.
"Location, location, location"

This is a great location for the visitor to Madrid. 100 yards frin Plaza del Sol, and 50 yards from Plaza Mayor. After 5 days here, we had walked to most of the more interesting things to do in Madrid. Museums, plaza's and even the palace, the largest palace in Europe (2600 rooms) are all within a 15 minute walk. The rooms are very small but nicely modern and very clean. Good showers, lots of hot water, an elevator (no steps). Now for the reason I rated it only average, if you are a light sleeper, have ear plugs or avoid this place. It is not quiet, ever, even at 3 or 4 in the morning, there is activity. Priced right (for Madrid).
"Exceeded my expectations"

I definitely recommend this place if you are on a budget and want a good, simple room with really great hosts. It is in an excellent location if you want to be in the tourist center of Madrid, right between Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor. The hostal is inexpensive, up to date, and spotless. The rooms have double pane windows which keep out most of the street noise (you ARE in the middle of a big city, after all), air conditioning, and a safe (costs 1 euro every time you use it). Wifi is free and my room had a strong signal. The hostal is in an older building so the room had only two extra electrical outlets - something to keep in mind if you travel with a lot of electronics. The bathroom was very small and tight, especially the toilet, which could be a problem for large people. This is a simple hostal, so no breakfast, but there is plenty of food all around.
"highly recommended place in the heart of old Madrid"
10/03/12 Florinda O Bucharest, Romania
A friendly, cosy place in a family-run hotel, nice people, very careful, turning on the heat on cold rainy nights, I felt at home, poor internet but improving by the middle of my stay, sometimes few shampoo, or soap provided, I would recommend Hostel Santa Cruz for its view and location mostly, and for its tidiness, quietness and warmth, as well. I enjoyed my stay a lot
"Great location, Great value!"

Right in the center of town - just a few blocks from the Plaza Sol metro stop, this was a great jumping off point for all of our Madrid adventures. 3 of us stayed in a room with 3 twin beds. The room was tiny but we weren't paying much so we were fine with it. The main reason I am docking 1 star is the promise of internet that was really only available when we were sitting right by the door. On the plus side though, our neighbors were breaking the rules and smoking in their room (its supposed to be non smoking) and we could only smell it when we left our room. Our room was sealed enough that we couldn't smell it while in our room.
