"Great location-simple hotel!!"
Hotel was clean, bed comfortable, great location to Stanley Park. It is an older hotel so you must take that into consideration. Highly recommend--great price!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Old but OK"
The place is old and looks more like a dorm. There is no elevator; we had to climb to the 2nd floor with the luggage. Inside there was no air conditioner. However, we were in a very good neighborhood, just blocks away from Stanley Park (a major attraction in Vancouver), and a lot of very nice restaurants on Denman St. The rooms were clean, the staff […] were very helpful, the wi-fi was free, and it was less expensive than the alternatives. "could walk to everything we wanted to do"
We really enjoyed our stay there. It's a unique old hotel in a quiet neighborhood. We were able to walk to Stanley Park, the waterfront, restaurants, coffee houses and shopping. The staff was helpful and pleasant. We were very pleased with our stay there!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Overall, great location, quaint, nostalgic feel - set back in time. Clean room.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"nice little hotel"
Immaculately restored older hotel in nice neighborhood close to restaurants and bus line. A major con is that it has three floors with no elevator or assistance available for getting yourvbags upstairs. Also the room, though we'll appointed, had only a tiny very noisy ceiling fan. Lastly was that there was no ice available anywhere in the hotelGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location & close to shopping & attractions"
The Buchan is conveniently located in a safe, quiet neighborhood: just a couple of blocks away from Stanley Park and one street over from Robson St. The hotel is clean, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The bathrooms are shared, but private; just like they are in a house. And, it was really convenient having a sink in our room. Price was […] our main motivator in selecting this hotel, but we were thoroughly impressed. Will definitely be staying here again the next time we visit Vancouver BC! This hotel is in a great location. Very close to lots of restaurants and shopping but on a nice quite side street which is great. We would definitely stay here again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great Location, Clean and Cheap Room"
This is a great hotel for its location and price. It's off the beaten path of Vancouver and in a great neighborhood. The rooms are clean. The building is old so don't expect perfect fixtures and trimmings, but it is all in good condition. The wifi in the room didn't work very well. That would be my only complaint.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"very very clean and great location!!"
the hotel was very very clean, everyday. the location to everywhere we went for our vacation was spot on and the staff was great at giving easy directions!! the room was very warm but with the window open and a fan, it was very pleasant (probably because it was on the third story) but the price for an assigned spot in the lot was fantastic, everything […] smelled nice and clean and it was a great vacation!! we would definitely stay here again! Very nice location, right in the Standley park, walking distance to the harbor, close to Denman street and Robson Street, where you can easliy find many nice restaurant, room is comfortable and cozy. I would recommand this hotel to my friend.Genuine Expedia guest review
"close to sights"
It is a lovely hotel on a very quiet street which is nice from the hustle of the busy downtown. Our only complaint was no air conditioning and it was a hot hot day. With that being said it had fans which did help and being able to actually open the windows was a great plus. We will come back and stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Booked this after a lot of research, based on price and location. It scored highly on both. Great area - quiet, safe and easy walking distance to so many places. Nearby supermarket among everything else! Very nice room although be aware it gets extremely hot if the weather is very hot (no aircon but they provided extra fans). It is a pretty basic hotel […] and some guests seemed to have unrealistic expectations. It's true that if you paid the same price for somewhere in the suburbs you'd get a really great hotel. But you're paying partly for location and it's a fantastic one! The hotels with a location like this that are more upmarket are ridiculously expensive. So if you want the sea/mountain/city views and aircon and luxury service go and stay somewhere else and pay a lot more. If you're looking for a modest, clean, safe hotel with an amazing location and friendly staff, look no further. Definitely coming back. Thanks to everyone at the Buchan for helping make my first trip to Vancouver such a memorable one! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Everything was perfect"
It was a very nice hotel with clean and modern rooms with enough space. I liked it and also the shared bathrooms were always clean. The staff members were always friendly and helpful. The neighborhood was quit and the stanley parc is in walking distance... nothing is really far away from this point. I would come back again!!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Hotel was basic but clean, street parking horrendous, the hotel only has about 4 spaces. Very close to local amenities.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Worth every money"
Great little hotel. Few blocks off of Denman Street, which has some great restaurants. The Italian bistro downstairs is pretty swell too. Overall, great experience. 10/10 would book againGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Our room barely had room to move. There is no elevator and no air conditioning. Noisy night with the window open. People very friendly. Nice residential neighborhood. Beautiful old building with nice sitting room near lobby. Parking was a challenge 2 blocks away.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This hotel is in a great location and the staff were very helpful. It was fully booked when we stayed and there were only 2 bathrooms for our floor of 12 rooms. This meant you sometimes had to wait for a shower and the bathrooms got dirty very quickly. That aside it was a good stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good bang for your buck"
Went to a concert and wanted a hotel that was reasonably priced. The hotel is old and very basic and although not close to Rogers Arena, the room was clean, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the area was very quiet. We walked to and from the concert and there are lots of shops and restaurants along Robson Street and a terrific Sushi […] restaurant just a block up from the hotel. If you are looking for an economical place to spend a night or two, then I would recommend the Buchan. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The desk staff very friendly and helpful. Great area just down the road from the famous Stanley Park, easy to get around very friendly area. Easy access to hop on and off buses, great for tourists.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"good location with many shops nearby"
Good location as it is near Canada Place and is near shops and eateries. The disadvantage is that the hotel does not have an elevator.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Close to Stanley Park and easy to get to downtown by bus. Service was good and the room was spacious and clean. Restaurant downstairs not connected to the hotel. Tea and coffee available in the lounge. Breakfasts and meals available from restaurants and cafes around the corner.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Worth every penny!"
My room was $69 per night +tax. Just like the their website says it's a no-frills kind of hotel. My room required a share bathroom but it was clean and user friendly. I would definitely go back again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Stayed at Buchan Hotel for one week in a double room with shared bathroom. Hotel was kept incredibly clean, sharing a bathroom was no problem at all! This is a great old hotel with lots of charm, will definatly be back!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice hotel and staff. Close to Stanley Park."
The staff were very nice to me. They offered to hold my stuff for a couple of hours. It was a reasonably priced hotel.Genuine Expedia guest review
My 11 year old son and I spent two nights at the Buchan Hotel and enjoy our selves. We were able to spend 2 and a 1/2 days at the Aquarium and Stanley Park. I recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to stay near the Aquarium, with great places to eat and walk at a fair price.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"sweet serenity in the city"
We were amazed at how quiet the neighbourhood is at night and it's just a block away from Stanley Park. The newly renovated room was very simply and tastefully done and the hotel staff was very helpful. It's not luxurious but it's comfortable and the restaurant Adesso below is a delight for brunch.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient location. Renovating a classic gem"
The current condition of my room was needing paint and wall repairs. The hotel is in the process of restoring this great old hotel. The price was great and close to Stanley Park, cultural food, and many convension hotels. The tree lined streets are quaint and charming.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by The Buchan Hotel Thank you for your comments Gord, I've been waiting to reply to this for awhile. I'm pleased to tell you that we've just finished renovating all of our rooms. Every room has now been painted, and every piece of furniture was purchased this past winter. I'm optimistic that when you come back you'll be pleased.
"Good for budget travelers"
Pros: located near to Stanley Park. Managed well. Reasonably cheap compared with other hotels nearby. Cons: old (feels like my small old apartment). Wi-fi signal is very weak and disconnected frequently (at least on the third floor).Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel located near Stanley Park. There are many kinds of restaurants and a supermarket nearby the hotel. It is very convenient to take buses to downtown. The downside is no refrigerator to reserve food.
"Great location and good price"
08/30/14 Micaël M
We spent 4 nights at this hotel. The room was ok, but we didn't expect much more for the price. This hotel is near all reastaurants and interesting harbour and in a walkable distance of all other Vancouver main attractions. Late in the evening you can hear wash machines and other people when they woke up in the morning so it's more for people who just sleep and change at the hotel.
"Reiterating post '“Great place for people on a budget”'"

I concur with the post '“Great place for people on a budget”'. The location in the West End near restaurants, very easy walking access to Stanley Park, the affordable cost, clean rooms, and shared baths (which did not bother me at all) convinced me to stay here during my next visit to Vancouver. Two added notes: The welcoming staff were polite and helpful. The cleaning staff kept the rooms and most importantly the shared baths immaculately clean.

I've stayed at the Buchan almost every time I'm in Vancouver and continue to be impressed. The location can't be beat, close to Stanley park, bus routes, and great restaurants. The rooms are clean and the staff is friendly. Shared bathrooms might scare some travellers off, but they are clean and in good condition and very close to all the rooms. The price is great as well; however, this is not a spacious luxury hotel and travellers must be aware of this, it's a neat old building with affordable and clean rooms, if you're on a budget it's great. No complaints!
"Excellent location, great front of house staff, but a lot of money"
08/21/14 biz_e26 Cirencester, United Kingdom
The Buchan Hotel has a fantastic location on a quiet, leafy side street but within a stone's throw of Stanley Park and close to Denman Street, where you'll find a great selection of restaurants and cafes. This is what really makes it worth the stay. The front of house staff were attentive and professional, helping us to book taxis and finding public transport routes for us with no hesitation. The room was fine - clean, comfy bed, decent shower, large walk-in wardrobe. The only downside was that the room was incredibly hot and sticky at all times of day and night, and it wasn't particularly hot outside. The hotel provided a stand-alone fan, and there was also one on the ceiling, but they didn't make a huge amount of difference. The ability to open the windows properly - they open a fraction and have a mesh screen - would've been very welcome. At approximately £100 a night - including taxes; watch out for those - it didn't seem amazing value for money, but you must compare like for like and Vancouver seems to be a fairly expensive city in which to stay. This hotel was definitely one of the cheapest and it served us pretty well.
"5-Star Value for Money"
08/20/14 Charles042 Victoria, Canada
Stayed for 3 nights. Small, charming, old style, almost "historic" in a quiet, treed neighbourhood. Great value for money compared to other hotels in or near the west end, especially in summer. Friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable guest lounge with newspapers and coffee. Had a 2nd floor Deluxe Queen corner room with bathroom (#38). Very comfortable mattress. Quiet. No air conditioning but both ceiling and standing fans. Over the office so in-room wifi was good - and free. No, it's not trendy. More like the small hotels we like in Europe. Only real downside is lack of on-site parking - only 8 spots that can't be reserved before registration.
"Excellent location, comfortable room"
08/20/14 andreafrank02 Seattle, Washington
The Buchan Hotel is located a couple of blocks from Stanley Park, as well as many restaurants, pubs and coffee shops. The street is lovely and the room was well-appointed. We had a private bath that was on the small side, but just what we needed. No elevator and no A/C, but the weather was comfortable with fans and an open window when we were there. It was quiet and comfortable. We would stay there again.
"Average, but close to Denman St."
08/20/14 tripl3thr33 Singapore, Singapore
Your average hotel to spend the night at. Nice lounge area. Location is very good, close to Denman St (where all things are happening, besides Robson St) and English Bay. We came there during the Celebration of Light festival (we didn't know about it earlier). However, the people there let us know about it and warn us if the road will be closed at certain time, which is very helpful. They also let us know that there are 2 different rooms over there; one with inside bathroom and another one with shared bathroom; so that we didn't choose the wrong type of room. Make sure to choose the correct one.
"Modest, Clean, Perfect location"

Very basic but perfect for those who need a base for travelling around. Rooms are small, no air condition but equipped with ventilators. Clean and tidy with plenty of power outlets for all different types of chargers :-)
"Lovely hotel, outstanding location"
08/10/14 Tom C Winchester, United Kingdom
Booked this after a lot of research, based on price and location. It scored highly on both. Getting there: Can get there by public transport but not that close to the sky train station so I found taxi easiest (many at airport). Approx $35. Area: On arrival I realised what a lovely area it's in: quiet, leafy, residential, despite being only a few minutes walk from the major streets, beach and Stanley Park. Because it is so close to Denman street (short stroll) you have every conceivable food shop/restaurant you can think of plus Safeway supermarket about 5 minutes away. Able to walk to so many places. Can't fault it and wouldn't have wanted to stay elsewhere in city. Checking in: I was checked in by an extremely helpful, professional lady (I think her name was Joanna) who was a very good person to be greeted by after a long flight! I saw her the most during my stay and she was consistently great at her job. Thanks! No problems at all with check in or out and they helpfully arranged a late check out due to a late flight. There's no lift/elevator so make sure you're feeling strong with your bag! The room: recently redecorated and sooo much nicer than they were previously, going by the old photos. Whoever chose the design should be congratulated. Very, very clean, has everything you need including lots of storage space. I'd booked one with a private bathroom but the shared ones looked fine too. The building is old and therefore no aircon. There is a ceiling fan and they kindly had 2 additional fans in the room. I came to Vancouver during a very hot couple of weeks and the room (especially top floor) was very, very hot at times so not always that comfortable. But like I say, not their fault. Would I come back during a particularly hot summer? Not sure. 98% of the year? Definitely yes! Amenities: nice, comfortable lounge area with good seating, lots of tourist leaflets and information and refreshments. Drinks/snacks vending machines. Laundry room. Wifi. Even better if: wish I’d know about the drinks/vending machines on arrival as a drink would have been very much appreciated that first night! Improving quality of wifi. I don't know if the signal couldn't quite reach the top floor or if my phone didn't like it but it would drop quite a lot. It may have been my phone tho! Neither was a big issue in any way. It is a reasonably basic hotel and some guests I saw seemed to have unrealistic expectations. It's true that if you paid the same price for somewhere in the suburbs you'd get a really great hotel. But you're paying partly for location and it's a truly fantastic one! The hotels with a location like this that are more upmarket are ridiculously expensive. So if you want the sea/mountain/city views and aircon and luxury service go and stay somewhere else and pay a lot more. If you're looking for a clean, comfortable, safe hotel with an amazing location and friendly staff, look no further. Definitely coming back. Thanks to everyone at the Buchan for helping make my first trip to Vancouver such a memorable one! Will be recommending you.
"Cheap and Cheerful, good location"
08/07/14 James L
The Buchan Hotel is a very friendly and accommodating hotel. The rooms are of a decent size with a comfy bed. The shared bathroom has a powerful shower and we haven't had to wait for a shower. The laundry facility is good and there is the option to buy detergent at reception. There is tea and coffee available in the lounge all day which is a nice touch. Location is great, just off Denman street which is full of good restaurants and it is a few minutes walk from the lost lagoon in Stanley park. The only thing to note is there is no air conditioning. A fan was provided which was adequate for our needs but perhaps not to everyone's taste. If you are looking for something low cost and near the action, this is a great place.
