"Great Location, Mediocre Room"
Pros: Great location. Stanley park is few blocks away and there are MANY restaurants in the area. The hotel is one of the cheaper hotels in the area. The room has a kitchen - full frig, stove, and cabinets, although we did not use it. Pretty fast wifi. Cons: Room smelled strongly of chlorine upon arrival. No AC so it got pretty warm at night, even with […] the windows opened. You can hear almost everything that's going outside the hotel, from homeless people singing to car exhausts, even with the windows closed. This made sleeping difficult. The English Bay Inn is a good value in a great location.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
So we stayed here for two nights on our honeymoon. We were trying to save a few bucks while in Vancouver. The hotel itself is definitely not high class but, fantastic location. The room was much better than we expected and perfectly comfortable (even had full kitchen). We spent sunsets hanging out with the locals on English Bay Beach (right across the […] street from hotel). Its in such a vibrant part of town with so much activity and restaurants galor. For half the price of basically anything else in downtown, its a nobrainer! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Love this place, its location and room pricing"
This was my third week-long stay at this hotel. The rooms are always clean and include a small kitchenette. The room price is terrific, and I will continue to stay here during all my future visits to Vancouver. The room was cleaned daily with the used towels and sheets routinely replaced. The location is wonderful. Hotel is a short walk to the beach […] and sea wall trails, Stanly Park nature preserve, the aquarium and the many fun restaurants in the area. It sits on the main transient routes for Vancouver’s excellent public transient system, plus down town center city is a modest walk away, as are the small boats shuttling people to the delightful Grandville Island tourist trap. You can open the windows to catch the sea breezes, and if the room overlooks the main street, the alive sounds and smells of the city. My only complaint is the lack of a super soft pillow. Now this place is not the Ritz-Carlton in which I have stayed more than once. I view hotels as a place to store your stuff while exploring the local environment and sleep when that time arrives. I am a guy with Spartan needs and a thin pocket book – I actually much prefer this hotel to the pretentious overpriced, high-end hotels in which I have stayed while traveling on business. For me and presumably people with my needs and tastes in hotels this place is 5-Star accommodations. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great bargain in accommodations with a great location in Vancouver. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"good time in English Bay"
hotel was okay. At first I thought it could be a little grotty from the condition of the lobby, but the room was clean, quiet and had everything we needed. Two big beds, clean linens, coffee etc. I would use the hotel again. If you are looking for something posh, this is not the hotel. But it served our purpose.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"a fantastic bang for your buck!!"
We really enjoyed our stay. The location is unsurpassed for west end excitement. Although the hotel is base in facilities, the staff and room were more than I expected for the star level. The rooms are large and the beds very comfy.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Hotel is in good location, but parking garage is wayyy too tight and awkward to get into. Rooms are spacious, but gross-feeling and smell weird. Place looks shady and i couldn't help but feel like i was getting jipped. Would NOT book here ever again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Midnight arrival off train, scary curbside appearance, night clerk asleep, not enough English to understand "phone book" ....... beds clean and comfortable. Ok for the one night.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Can we get a refund if possible? We have not stayed as the hotel environment was not family friendly. We wanted parking desperately as we had a kid travelling but the hotel has parking only on first come basis that was not communicated earlier.Genuine Expedia guest review
I picked this hotel because of the location...and the low price. It was perfect for what I needed. Not the nicest looking place I've stayed at, could use some upgrades, but it did the trick. Spacious hotel room. We were lucky to get a room with a ocean view from 1 side and a beautiful tree on one side. It is a block away from the beach. Lots of restaurants nearby. "Close to the beach and very affordable!"
Love the five person rooms! The hotel is right near the beach and close to Granville too. Also it is very cheap to stay there. The staff are friendly and accomadating. It's not a fancy hotel but for students looking for a cheap place to stay, it is great. The beds are good and we had no problems with cleanliness. Also, there was a big flat screen […] in the suite which was nice. They could improve the décor but that doesn't really matter for people that don't care about that stuff. The cups in the cupboard were a bit dirty and we found a hair in the ice container. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"You get what you pay for"
If you are driving a vehicle this motel is not for you. The charge of 10.00 dollars a night for underground parking. Not acceptable for a two star motel and if you have a van, suv or small truck forget about going down the extremely narrow driveway to enter the underground parking. Parking is out in the streets and good luck finding one right outside […] the motel on a busy street full of traffic, restaurants and people. The owner/front desk person does not treat you like a guest but rather alarmed and you are on watch around the clock. You get what you payed for which is the bare minimum. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

I was hesitant to stay here based on the photos. The location was wonderful, two blocks from English Bay. Both Denman and Davie had many places to eat close by. The parking was first come and was very tight, do not plan on if you have a big car. Room was comfortable, did not need the small kitchen. No air conditioning that I knew of but 2 portable fans and windows opened. If you want location but do not plan to be in the room other than to sleep, I would stay here again.
"Great location! Not much of anything else.."

One of my fatal error was not to check trip advisor to let me know how users rated this hotel prior to going to booking the place and going to Vancouver. The location is definitely great but the hotel is not. The room we stayed in had the floor air conditioner and had a tube going out of the window. This was not so much of an issue but when we talked to the customer service rep on the first floor, we were dismayed as to the level of "deal with it" attitude from the staff when we inquired about. This I was willing to forego, after all, the rates where reasonable for the location, but when we returned to the room we began to notice other causes for concern. The hallway floors were stained with food droppings, probably left there for a long long time. There is a dank odor that permeated the hallway: a cross between cooked bacon being cooked and stir friend Chinese food that's been stewing in someone's kitchen without power. We further inspected the room, the fridge was not properly attended to: there were old milk and food that prior guests left behind. The toiletries looked like they have not been touched since the disco era. The towels shredded when used to wipe our hands. The towels were all old! There were mold in the drawer where a GIDEON's BIBLE would have been found in other hotels, and when I used their in-room blow drier after a shower, the room lost power! It is no wonder the circuit breaker was in our room and thankfully so! The hotel had such a sub-sub-lower level standard of care. It is a shame since the place is located in such wonderful neighborhood. I wonder if this hotel gets inspected by the authorities for such violations such as sanitary and safety codes? It was harder to bail out of this hotel since we didn't have access to other places and we have been driving for the last 24 hours just to get to Vancouver. Access to the garage is tight. I can deal with that. The smell of garbage from the parking lot to the hotel lobby not so much.....other guests I've overheard say, 'THIS PLACE STINKS!".
"Perfect hotel for people with lower standards and recommendations"
Service is the hotel was good, but nothing special. Very friendly staff though. Rooms weren't bad at all. It was very spacious and the beds were very comfortable. The kitchen was a equipped with a stove, sink, microwave, coffee machine, crockery and cutlery, and a big fridge and freezer. Rooms could be cleaned better. We noticed the carpet wasn't cleaned properly every day. Plus, there was a lot of dust noticeable on surfaces. We stayed in a room at the front of the hotel. It was about 30 degrees when we stayed and the sun is pointed towards the room all day. As there is no AC or double glass, it became very hot and stuffy. Rooms are very outdated. Also, the hotel is located in a neighbourhood known for its (LGBT) night life. When we stayed the Vancouver Pride was on, so it could become quite noisy at night. However, we sleep with ear plugs so didn't notice anything. Location of the hotel is excellent. Nice bars and restaurants in Denman and Davie St. They look quite dodgy, but the food is absolutely great. It's also great to have several beaches nearby. English Bay beach can be quite busy, but if you walk 5 minutes into Stanley Park you'll find Second Beach (more quiet) and a big lido. Bus C23 and C21 bring you down right into Yaletown (nouveau rich neighbourhood) and bus 5 drops you off downtown if you wanna do some shopping. Vancouver Aquarium is only a 10-15 minute walk. Other bus stops that bring you to Vancouver's top sights are about 5-10 minutes from the hotel. The price I paid was quite low, especially when you look at the season (early August) and a location that is highly demanded by tourists. I'd definitely go back as I had a very pleasant stay.

This hotel is extremely reasonable and the location cannot be beat! Right by English Bay so an easy walk to the Granville Island ferry and all the attractions of Stanley Park. I have rarely seen as many or such a variety of restaurants as are on the neighboring streets. It would be impossible not to find something to your taste. That said, the furnishings are well used, as is all the kitchen equipment. Do not stay here if you are expecting luxury but for a great deal in a fun location it is a great choice.

First off, not a glamorous hotel in any way but our room was very comfortable, clean and in a good location and within easy walking or cycling distance of lots of Vancouver attractions. Value for money. We would consider staying here again.
"Would not stay here again"
08/02/14 Gretchen O Seattle, Washington
I booked this hotel in order to be close to English Bay for the fireworks festival. In that respect, this hotel met the requirements. In every other aspect, it did not. We arrived at the hotel and tried to park in the upper garage, but were unable to get in. When I went to talk to the man at the front desk he told me we had to park in the lower lot which is down a very narrow driveway. He also said that there was a parking garage 3 blocks down we could use. I returned to the car, we navigated the steep alley, and were unable to get in again. Come to find out that we needed a key, which he did not give to me even though he told me to park down there. Another woman returned to the lobby at the same time and said that the parking garage 3 blocks down would not let her park there overnight. When we finally got into our room it looked clean enough; just very run down. They had a portable A/C unit which meant we had to keep our window open at all times for it to vent out. This made for a very noisy experience with busses, garbage trucks, and traffic. The Wi-Fi was so slow it was non-existent. I would not stay here again, even with the great location.

Was pleasantly surprised with this hotel, excellent location (near davie street, which has good restaurants and nightlife) and our room was clean and spacious. Considering what we paid for our room we would happily stay again.
06/26/14 ABritishblend Langley City, Canada
The hotel lobby looks like an old Las Vegas strip joint, my room smelled bad as soon as I unlocked the door, and the whole building is very run down. I had to wash the bathroom & kitchenette floors before I would take my shoes off. There was hair all over the bathroom, yellow spots on the walls and mud splashed above the sink. Mold was growing in the closet area and on kitchen baseboards. I left the kitchen and bathroom lights on all night waiting for something to crawl out. The bed smelled musty sand unclean, I slept on top of the bedding using my own bed cover. I cleaned the microwave as there was food stuck inside, and would not touch the stove as the elements were severely damaged and looked dangerous. The room was very cluttered with too much furniture and the carpet needed a vacuum. One window was broken and the other was in a bad state of repair. The list goes on and on. Had the rates for this room been half what they were, I would expect nothing more than this. The location is 5 star, the only positive thing I could say. I forfeited my second night and left at 6am this morning, I could not stay there another minute after a sleepless night breathing in dust and mold, street noise such as yelling, fighting, sirens, horns blaring etc. I have lost my money, and unless there is no other alternative, I would not stay here again. Sleeping on the beach would be better.
"Location excellent, everything else terrible"
Unfortunately we booked on "no car" day and several blocks of Denman Street were blocked off. A hotel that cared about customer service would have let us know this at the time of booking but nonetheless we found our way to the back alley where we were faced with one of the most terrifying entrances to a parking garage I have ever experienced. This is not for the feint of heart! After winding our way through the dusky, dirty parkade (up a narrow flight of stairs carrying our luggage) and past the various discarded filthy old bathtubs, cabinets etc we made it to the lobby. The service was 'okay' but honestly I was more focused on trying not to breathe in the unpleasant aroma. We loaded in to the elevator (2 trips because it is a very small and ancient elevator) where I tried my best again not to smell anything. The bag of scent beads tied to the vent didn't appear to be doing too much. The hallways had the same unpleasant smell mixed with a very strong perfume smell. The rooms were the same. Space-wise, the room would have been great as it had a full kitchen, and a table with 4 chairs, however, that was overshadowed by the out-dated and not well cleaned state of the room. I had to laugh when we noticed that they actually just cut a chunk out of the bathroom door to make sure it could close past the toilet! I'd like to tell you the view made up for this but we looked out on the roof of the building next door which was littered with discarded trash and needles. I suppose we could have jumped over and cleaned it up ourselves since the window latches were broken and opened so wide they were hard to 'retrieve'. To be honest, this was an advantage for us as we were trying to air out the room but had we had small children, this would have been incredibly dangerous. I was relieved that our stay was very short and I wouldn't do it again. The Sylvia is close by and a much nicer stay!
"Great location, good price, lousy accommodations"
06/19/14 Rachel M Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico
The location can't be beat - except perhaps by the Sylvia which is - and the price is certainly good, but everything else about this hotel is horrible. The 'quiet' rooms at the back look out over a roof littered with needles and trash and the front rooms are very noisy. Both hallways and rooms have an unbelievably bad smell, and in both our rooms the windows had no latch so if you opened them, a child could easily fall out. On the plus side, the shower worked and there was a kitchenette in every room. Parking is underground, accessed off a back lane, and very difficult to access, particularly in a large car.
