Stayed for two nights in late January 2015, nice room with bay windows and big, very comfortable bed. Room had ensuite which was large, functional and very clean. Like all Nth American rooms, the heating was cranked up to about 25 degrees celsius or more. Had to open all the bedroom windows to get the temp down to something manageable. There's plenty […] of off-street parking and it's a handy location to go downtown into Vancouver. The breakfast is pretty simple fare, nothing flash but it's ok. I'd stay there again. "ncie place to stay"
Comfortable stay, good breakfast and convenient location. I would stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This guest house was very comfortable and the hostess was courteous and helpful. The only drawback was that we could not control room temperature without opening windows or doors - it was a bit too warm. Included breakfast meal was delicious.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Just fine....and handy location"

We originally reserved through bookings.com for Cambie House, their sister property. We called to check on something and were asked if we could stay at Douglas House instead which actually was more convenient for us. Everything here worked out fine. The William Room was a fair size and had a private bath (better than our initial booking). The bed was so comfortable, neither of us budged all night. The exterior is well laid out but in need of a scrub and paint. Our toilet got plugged and we lost hot water pressure during my husband's shower but we paid $100/night which is a real bargain in Vancouver. Breakfast was fine. Lots of options except no hot cereal which is my travel stand-by. This is the closest B abd B to our daughter's place and really handy for Skytrain so we will be coming back.
"Good and Bad"

Our first stay at the Douglas Guest House was just lovely - super room, quiet, comfortable - bit of a nuisance having to walk down the corridor to the toilet and bathroom but we knew that in advance. Fantastic breakfast in a beautiful indoor-outdoor setting - and very friendly and helpful staff. So on our return a few weeks later, we were really looking forward to going back. We had booked many months in advance and specified that we wanted to stay in the Douglas Houses - as there is another lovely home next door and another further away. Well, it was not to be a repeat experience - we found ourselves being put in a backpacker's like room in a place next door that was clearly once an office block. It was like a slightly up market backpacker's - not only did we not have any say in this as we received our envelope at the front door of the Douglas house guiding us to this room and no staff around to be explain this turn of events, but this was not what we asked for. We were quite specific when we enquired about Douglas house, we specified that was where we wanted to stay. Same lovely staff and same lovely eating spot - but not what we wanted overall. As it was our last night of our holiday in Canada, it was extremely disappointing - so one tip - double check where you will be staying. We didn't know that we needed to do that.
"Wasp Infested Room"

I was stung four times over two nights because of a wasp nest in the attic with access to the nest from our room in the penthouse suite. We had a baby in the room. My wife couldn't sleep because of the wasps and fear of our child getting stung. Management chalked it up to a risk of the area; but a wasp nest leaking into a room is definitely their responsibility. They didn't offer a discount or an apology. Who would pay to sleep in a room with a wasp nest? If it weren't for the wasps and management's response the place itself was good. The location was excellent and the breakfast had a good selection, but a wasp nest inside the B&B is absolutely unacceptable; ask about it before you book.
On holiday. Good location. Good breakfast, friendly staff. Rooms are small, wi-fi internet connection is available but comes and goes. Basically our room "e" garden suite was small, had a musty smell and ants all over the floor and under the area rug. There is a issue. Owners name is Paul and he didn't deal with the issue properly. Very unprofessional in his tone when dealing with the ant problem and suggesting that it was our problem? How do you run a business without informing your guest of ant or insect problems. I understand it is summer and it's the time for insects and ants, but one should have some reassurance that your belongings that are left in the room won't have ants crawling all over it when one gets back to the room. There was nothing wrong with the Douglas Guest House but there was no personal touches, either. The lady serving breakfast was really nice and friendly and the owner stopped by once or twice but no interactions. We met other couples at breakfast and shared stories but otherwise it was a room to sleep in.

This place is close to the hospital, which is what I needed and I got a room at short notice. After spending two nights on a cot in my mom's hospital room this place was exactly what I needed! Clean, quiet, cozy. The breakfast was spectacular and super low key and casual. Will be back!!
"Not a typical B&B"

Already when we arrived, we were surprised to find the house deserted. No one was there to welcome us. There was just an envelope taped to the door with our key and some notes. I am used to a more personal touch, e.g. welcomed by the owner. The room was nice, a large and comfy bed with a lot of cushions. The small bathroom was only separated from the bed room by thin sliding door, so that one could hear everything what is going on in there from the bedroom. The breakfast was ok-ish, nothing special. Everyday we had a new person looking after us. The fruit was not always fresh and the general atmosphere was not as warm as to what I am used to. Despite these minor drawbacks, it has one big advantage, it is namely only few minutes walking away from the next subway station which brings you in no time to the city center. In addition, you have a lot of restaurants for all tastes close to the B&B. So, if you only looking for a place to sleep which not much personal interaction, this is definitely a good option. If I am coming back to Vancouver, I might consider maybe something else.

I found Douglas G.H. for some German visitors (staying at my B&B and Guest House in Rossland, BC). They liked it, and now I have spent a week there, while doing business in Vancouver. POSITIVE: It's easy to find (near 12th Ave/Grandview), has off-street parking and it's in an attractive central area near City Hall, VGH, shopping and bus routes. The staff are friendly and helpful (fixed Wi-fi access at 9.30 pm, reduced room rate when I stayed longer than my friend.) I had a private entrance (in Garden suite E), but enjoyed meeting people at breakfast. The room was clean, and the bathroom nicely renovated. A shared fridge and kettle was useful. NEGATIVE: That room's carpet should be replaced asap, and the old sheets. Bathroom needs a shelf. Breakfast bread was cheap, but the omelette, fruit, etc was nice. Will I return? YES.
"A good place to stay, just don't expect to be able to sleep in."

I spent a few nights recently in this Guest House while on a short holiday trip. I stayed in room D which is one of the slightly larger ones in the basement. The good: the room was clean and in very good condition, the ladies serving b'fast very smiley and helpful, location is good with nice streets around and very convenient underground train to get to airport fast. I normally would have given this place a higher ranking but the fact that my room was directly beneath the b'fast area meant from just before 8am onwards there was a lot of noise of people walking and moving chairs around so it is impossible to sleep. I probably would have given this place a 3.5 rating as average sounds harsh but that said, quietness i think is a per-requisite. I would go back but in a different room.

We had such a wonderful trip in Canada but unfortunately our stay at this guest house was a disappointing finale. We had a basement room which was very small. The breakfast was awful- we were offered pancakes, scrambled eggs or omelette and, over the course of the days we stayed, we tried all three- our omelette was so bland we couldn't eat it. The other options turned out to be just as bad. The gentleman who worked there was very polite. However, we couldn't say the same for the lady who appeared to be the patron of the guest house. When we arrived, we immediately got ushered into the room to the left of the front door and were asked to pay for the entirety of our stay up front without even seeing the room. This was highly unorthodox but we did pay to avoid an awkward conversation. It came across as very mercenary and was quite off-putting. She was also cold and disinterested generally. We also heard her being quite rude to a lady that arrived for her stay. It was a shame because the others who worked there appeared very nice. The only upsides were (a) it was very close to the city hall sky train station which was convenient and (b) it wasn't too expensive (which would have added insult to injury given our overall experience). Not recommended.
