"ncie place to stay"
Comfortable stay, good breakfast and convenient location. I would stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This guest house was very comfortable and the hostess was courteous and helpful. The only drawback was that we could not control room temperature without opening windows or doors - it was a bit too warm. Included breakfast meal was delicious.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
On holiday. Good location. Good breakfast, friendly staff. Rooms are small, wi-fi internet connection is available but comes and goes. Basically our room "e" garden suite was small, had a musty smell and ants all over the floor and under the area rug. There is a issue. Owners name is Paul and he didn't deal with the issue properly. Very unprofessional in his tone when dealing with the ant problem and suggesting that it was our problem? How do you run a business without informing your guest of ant or insect problems. I understand it is summer and it's the time for insects and ants, but one should have some reassurance that your belongings that are left in the room won't have ants crawling all over it when one gets back to the room. There was nothing wrong with the Douglas Guest House but there was no personal touches, either. The lady serving breakfast was really nice and friendly and the owner stopped by once or twice but no interactions. We met other couples at breakfast and shared stories but otherwise it was a room to sleep in.

This place is close to the hospital, which is what I needed and I got a room at short notice. After spending two nights on a cot in my mom's hospital room this place was exactly what I needed! Clean, quiet, cozy. The breakfast was spectacular and super low key and casual. Will be back!!
"Not a typical B&B"

Already when we arrived, we were surprised to find the house deserted. No one was there to welcome us. There was just an envelope taped to the door with our key and some notes. I am used to a more personal touch, e.g. welcomed by the owner. The room was nice, a large and comfy bed with a lot of cushions. The small bathroom was only separated from the bed room by thin sliding door, so that one could hear everything what is going on in there from the bedroom. The breakfast was ok-ish, nothing special. Everyday we had a new person looking after us. The fruit was not always fresh and the general atmosphere was not as warm as to what I am used to. Despite these minor drawbacks, it has one big advantage, it is namely only few minutes walking away from the next subway station which brings you in no time to the city center. In addition, you have a lot of restaurants for all tastes close to the B&B. So, if you only looking for a place to sleep which not much personal interaction, this is definitely a good option. If I am coming back to Vancouver, I might consider maybe something else.

I found Douglas G.H. for some German visitors (staying at my B&B and Guest House in Rossland, BC). They liked it, and now I have spent a week there, while doing business in Vancouver. POSITIVE: It's easy to find (near 12th Ave/Grandview), has off-street parking and it's in an attractive central area near City Hall, VGH, shopping and bus routes. The staff are friendly and helpful (fixed Wi-fi access at 9.30 pm, reduced room rate when I stayed longer than my friend.) I had a private entrance (in Garden suite E), but enjoyed meeting people at breakfast. The room was clean, and the bathroom nicely renovated. A shared fridge and kettle was useful. NEGATIVE: That room's carpet should be replaced asap, and the old sheets. Bathroom needs a shelf. Breakfast bread was cheap, but the omelette, fruit, etc was nice. Will I return? YES.
"A good place to stay, just don't expect to be able to sleep in."

I spent a few nights recently in this Guest House while on a short holiday trip. I stayed in room D which is one of the slightly larger ones in the basement. The good: the room was clean and in very good condition, the ladies serving b'fast very smiley and helpful, location is good with nice streets around and very convenient underground train to get to airport fast. I normally would have given this place a higher ranking but the fact that my room was directly beneath the b'fast area meant from just before 8am onwards there was a lot of noise of people walking and moving chairs around so it is impossible to sleep. I probably would have given this place a 3.5 rating as average sounds harsh but that said, quietness i think is a per-requisite. I would go back but in a different room.

We had such a wonderful trip in Canada but unfortunately our stay at this guest house was a disappointing finale. We had a basement room which was very small. The breakfast was awful- we were offered pancakes, scrambled eggs or omelette and, over the course of the days we stayed, we tried all three- our omelette was so bland we couldn't eat it. The other options turned out to be just as bad. The gentleman who worked there was very polite. However, we couldn't say the same for the lady who appeared to be the patron of the guest house. When we arrived, we immediately got ushered into the room to the left of the front door and were asked to pay for the entirety of our stay up front without even seeing the room. This was highly unorthodox but we did pay to avoid an awkward conversation. It came across as very mercenary and was quite off-putting. She was also cold and disinterested generally. We also heard her being quite rude to a lady that arrived for her stay. It was a shame because the others who worked there appeared very nice. The only upsides were (a) it was very close to the city hall sky train station which was convenient and (b) it wasn't too expensive (which would have added insult to injury given our overall experience). Not recommended.
"Two Excellent Days, August '13"

I chose to stay here after reading comments & getting some guidance from a local contact who knows the area. I'd stayed in 4 Hotels and a Hostel in the US in the preceding 18 days. This Guest House was the most pleasant - as well as being very good value for money. For example, I found it more friendly and better value than the good stay I'd had in the Warwick in Union Square, San Francisco. My room was comfortable & clean. In a 1st floor room at the front, I had quiet & restful nights (Mon 26th & Tues 27th August). The shared bathroom was close by : perhaps I was lucky, but access was easy and the facilities very clean and pleasant. The front deck seating & small garden allowed a friendly outdoor place for guests to chat if they chose to. The breakfast was generous and delicious : outdoor tables were available. There was a wide range of choices, including made-on-the-spot omelettes and refreshingly tasty croissants. The cooking and waiter service were exceptional - and a remarkable pleasure (!). I'd had nothing as good as this personal attention and quality in my other (U.S.) stays. On the 2 days I was there, the work was being done by Veronica (cooking & admin) and Sergio (service & advice). Their care was sensitive and helpful. The quality of the food and the attention to detail contributed to a positive atmosphere amongst the guests. Breakfast was made a lovely positive, unhurried start to the day. Access to the Internet was made easier (for me) by the option of an available PC in the ground floor lounge. Again, I might have been lucky, but access to the machine was easy. I would recommend this Guest House warmly.
"Pleasant and Location"

Two weeks in a BnB. Great breakfasts. Great location. Friendly staff. Tree lined street, a minute from the sky train and busses but quiet ... Downstairs room. Reach all of Vancouver from the transit system. Internet and wireless. Never a problem. Plenary of markets and restaurants within a few minutes walk. A great city to walk ... When the weather is gorgeous. Price & value make the BnB a winner. Three houses to choose from.

We stayed four nights in room 3 at Douglas house. The sink is just inside the room, and toilet and shower in small cubical. I noticed that the room beside us did not have the nice updated furniture and bedding that ours did, so was happy that we lucked out in that regard. Breakfast was nice along with the host. Parking was available and free, so we left our car there and used the train; a station is only a couple blocks away. This is a decent place to stay, but is not your quaint and personal b&b where the host is sharing their home with you; the house next door is also under the same operation, so there is a fairly large number of other travellers. Do not expect your room to be cleaned each day, they only make the bed. We told the host our toilet was plugged when we left for the day, and when we got back the plunger was left in the room for us to do ourselves. Just some minor things but we would stay again.
