It was everything I had expected. from reading some of these, people still expect hotels to be like USA. the first room we were supposed to get the safe didn't work and they moved us into the room next door. the very interesting thing of this room was the shower was exposed to the outside which was neat, not that anyone could see you just the roof was […] open air about 3 feet from the shower head. AC worked and they also had a fan, no problems. because it was the green season the hotel was slow and we had the hotel to our selves. walking distance to a few places and they have parking for our rental car and a security for over night. I would stay again and the stairs weren't a problem. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"If you don't expect a resort, you will be happy."
My husband and I stayed here because we couldn't afford to stay at the resort down the street, where our friends were staying. We knew coming here that it wasn't a resort. Don't expect a resort, and you will have a lovely time. Breakfast in the morning was the best part - homemade on the spot, delicious, and outside, surrounded by the forest, flowers, […] and monkeys! The room itself was very basic, but did was it was meant to do. I brought my own pillow, for which I am thankful (but I'm a very picky and difficult sleeper). They didn't change sheets and towels unless requested - so just remember you have to go to their office to request that. The office closes at 9pm, so make sure you take care of any questions or concerns before that. They don't have a shuttle to and from the beach (which is a 20 minute or so walk, and a big hike back up), but we walked to our friends' resort and used their shuttle. There is a bank right across the street if you need to exchange money - they had the best rates I found. But just about everyone in the area is bilingual and takes US dollars. There is also a market next to the bank, where we bought our drinks. We made a rule not to bring any food into the hotel room, since there are so many bugs and wildlife around. Our AC worked fine. We basically were only in our room to shower and sleep. It's not a great spot for just hanging out, but overall, we were very satisfied. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"We Had a Great Time"
The hotel staff was very nice. Breakfast was simple and delicious. Rooms were air conditioned and lovely. It is right across from a bar with a beautiful view, and very close to a bus stop. Would definitely visit again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice hotel close to everything"
Staff very helpful. Within 3-4 minutes by car to beach & Manuel Antonio Natl Park. Directly in front (across the street) of a grocery store. Within 2 minutes by car to a variety of nice restaurants. Located on mountain side of the road (as opposed to ocean side). Rooms at the back of the hotel make it for a quiet night. Hotel grounds and rooms contain […] several stairs so it may not be suitable for people with disability issues. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great location, friendly staff"
Good value for the price. The room was a little musty and dated, but the A/C worked well and the bedding was nice and clean. Great location and friendly staff.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very nice staff"
We arrived very early before check in time. We were given a place to leave our things and to freshen up and also given breakfast before we had even checked in. It was really appreciated after a long overnight flight. The food was good and the service even better! There were monkeys everywhere!!! We took pictures right out our front door!!Genuine Expedia guest review

Pros: Nice swimming pool and patio where breakfast was served. Cons:The room was small and poorly lit. There was no phone or hair dryer in the room. There was no view. The facility seemed warn and needed updating. Poorly furnished. Overpriced.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great hotel - beware of making any changes though."
Great hotel, all went well until we asked to stay one more night, and were placed in a room different than what was agreed with the night clerk. (whom unwillingly eventually half admitted that he may have made an error) Oh well, just get it in writing.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A more expensive hostel"
The room had 2 sets of stairs. 3 stairs to enter the bedroom area, a king-size bed, no chairs, one small table, a small "dorm-room" refridgerator, a TV the size of a computer monitor, one small wardrobe and no drawers. A small window airconditioner. The bath was tiny; a walk down 3 stairs to enter, a single sink, no counter, the toilet nearly required […] one to put their feet in the shower to sit down. "Hotel suitable for back packers"
I would never stay at this hotel again. Worst hotel I ever stayed at. We had to climb down 67 stairs to our room and than climb up another 10 stairs to our room. No phone in the room to call front desk if you need any thing. Not enough towels in the room. The price we paid for two days was high for the quality. Water in the shower was cold on both […] days. "Cute hotel, just needs some new updates"
We stayed here because it seemed to be the nicest hotel in our pricepoint (about 120/night) in the area. It was just ok, but there were some nice things. The staff was very friendly, the breakfast is served out by the pool and cooked fresh for you every morning, which was awesome. The shower (in our room "E" anyways) was half open air, which was pretty […] cool. The pool was tiny but nice. This hotel has a lot of potential, but just needs a little updating and touching up. The light switches were filthy, the old sliding shower doors were kinda gross, there wasn't a real door to the bathroom, just one of those plastic sliding door things, which was broken and cracked. Those things were really all cosmetic, but the bed, whoa, was that bed hard as heck! Neither my husband or I got great sleep bc of the bad mattress. The hotel is very close to a bus stop that will take you to Manuel Antonio beach for cheap. IAnd walkable to restaurants and other hotels. The parking lot is tiny but sufficient and they have a guard at night. Overall our stay was not bad. If we return i would like to find a hotel on the ocean side of the road, and one with a softer mattress! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Excellent location....walking distance to many restaurants (across street, next door, etc.)....small convenience store across the street....bus stop 100 yards away. "Nice hotel with rainforest ambiance"
This hotel had wonderful and helpful staff. Breakfast was included and was very good. There was a nice pool for relaxing but it wasn't too deep or large, it's more for lounging than swimming. The nice thing about the hotel was that there were facilities to cook if you wanted to have a group bbq. There was also a ping pong and pool table. The only issues […] are that there were a lot if stairs so I wouldn't book it if that could be an issue. The room was pretty solid and the shower was huge. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The hotel room was really spacious. We were upgraded to the Apt which was really nice. The hotel is not at all walking distance to the beach. We had a car so it was not an issue as it is just a 5 minute drive to the beach. However, walking to the beach is not recommended as you have to climb a steep hill while coming back. Rooms were very clean and […] comfortable. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
I stayed at this hotel for one night and it was nice. The staff were super friendly and helpful, the breakfast was good, and the pool/breakfast area was very pretty. The entrance to the hotel looks very basic, but when you go back to the room and pool area, it feels like you are in a secluded area with so many plants and trees. The rooms are relatively […] large; the bathroom is a little small, but overall, it was a nice place. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Above and beyond"
09/30/14 Colin W Manuel Antonio National Park, Costa Rica
I stayed here while leading a group of high school students in the summer and it was easily the best hotel in which we stayed during our month long excursion in Costa Rica. Alexandria and the ladies at the front desk were super helpful and accommodating. Lorena helped put fun, memorable, low-cost trips together for the kids. The pool was great to relax at the end of the day and the breakfast ladies always had a smile when they made your individual meal. It seemed other guests enjoyed the Mandarina as well, having mentioned it was their 6th year in a row staying there. If I am in Manuel Antonio again I will be staying a second time. Hotel Mandarina A+!!!

the hotel staff was very nice and helpful. Our room was clean and a nice view of the pool and surroundings. our first room the safe wasn't working properly and they moved us into a larger room with a view next door. There are some stairs walking to your room and the pool and breakfast area, but remember there are hills here and everyone walks. you come to Costa Rica to explore the beautiful nature and this requires a lot of walking. the ac and ceiling fan worked and the room was comfortable.

Do you like shacks? Do you like to feel springs in a hard mattress? Are you willing to pay 89$ per night for said shack with vintage mattress? Then the Mandarina is for you. You won't be disappointed! (The place is very clean though and staff are trying their best to make up for the shabby rooms. Perhaps new management intends to renew furniture at some point?)
"Very Nice Hotel in Great Location!!"
08/16/14 KIDSINVEGAS Paramount, California
This hotel is a true value for the area. The personnel at Hotel Mandarina are very friendly and helpful beginning with Lorena, Alexandria in the front desk to the ladies Esther and another lady (I'm sorry I don't recall her name) who manage the breakfast area. They are all very friendly and make sure you have a wonderful stay. I stayed at this hotel 7 days with my husband and three boys, ages 5, 7 & 15 we actually got a great apartment which is right next door to the lobby. It was perfect as during the evenings we would sit in the front porch and just watch the cars and people go by. It was fun. The complimentary breakfast was good "not buffet style" but it was fine. They serve eggs, beans, rice, toast and pancakes choice of coffee or orange juice. Esther and the other lady did a great job in maintaining our apartment. The hotel also provides towels for the beach. We also saw many monkeys, a sloth, a toad and lizards all around the hotel. That was a great experience, the kids were very excited. There is a market and bank right across the street which is very convenient. The restaurant across the street (Agua Azul) has great food, we had cheese burgers with French fries and quesadillas and we were very satisfied. However, it is a bit pricy. We also had dinner at Barba Roja just down the street we also had cheeseburgers and steaks and it was delicious but a bit pricy. We also had pizza at the Wagon (Wood Fire Pizza) we thought it was ok but the price is just right. My husband and I visited Byblos and and played pool and had some drinks and we even did karaoke and that was a lot of fun. Café milagro also has live music, that place was nice; all the places we visited are walking distance. The beach is about 5 to 10 minutes from the hotel you can take the bus or a taxi both are very inexpensive. The beach is nice, there is a lot of stores and restaurants by the beach and you can do a lot of fun activities at the beach. Manuel Antonio National Park is right by the beach as well. All in all Manuel Antonio is a great place to be. The people, the restaurants, the tours the beach are amazing. We were sad when it was time to come home. One last tip, we took a taxi back to San Jose to the airport for a fee of $100 if they want to charge you more then it is a rip off. We had to pay $180 from the airport to Manuel Antonio as we did not know any better. Make sure you get the drivers information and have the hotel verify it for you just for safety.

This hotel sits on top of the hill but you have to go to the other side of the street in order to see the great views. Beware of where your room is the hotel reception is at street level but the rooms are built down the hill behind it. I was put in a room at the very bottom of the hill, it was at the beginning of my vacation and my knees took such a beating from this that I had a hard time through out the rest of my vacation ( I usually have no problems with my knees) This is my reason for the lower rating. The staff was very friendly and helpful the breakfast was cooked to order and the monkeys very cute. The local bus stop down to the beach was just at the corner very convenient and cheap..
"Incredible Value Coupled with Authentic Costa Rican Experience"
07/22/14 Chad H College Station, Texas
If you are looking for a five star beach resort, then Hotel Mandarina is not for you. However, if you are looking for a nice, reasonably priced hotel that provides you with the true Costa Rican experience, then this is one of the best options out there. For only $89 per night (plus tax), my girlfriend and I enjoyed a weekend in Manuel Antonio that included free breakfast and impeccable service in an authentically tropical environment complete with wildlife. The staff here was extremely helpful, and the receptionists speak perfect English if lack of Spanish proficiency is a concern. They were also kind enough to provide complimentary beach towels in the case that you don't have room to pack any. Hotel Mandarina is convenently located next to a bank, convenience store, several restaurants and a bus stop that will get you to the beach in five minutes for only 285 colones (roughly 52 cents). As I said, it is no five star resort, but I would not have wanted to stay anywhere else. I will definitely be returning to Hotel Mandarina!

This hotel was a great find, and true value for the area. The hotel is perfectly located - close enough to the beach and Quepos, but far enough from each of their hustle and bustle. It's located in the perfect middle, near other hotels and restaurants so you don't have to drive. But you do need to drive, or get the bus, to the beach. But I think the area is better than the beach. The hotel was clean. You definitely need to be OK with stairs. And the pool doesn't get much sun. The jungle views during breakfast are very cool. The room was perfectly fine, but nothing over the top special. The bathroom was down 3 stairs. The best part of the hotel was Alexandria - she was SO helpful and so sweet! And go to Cafe Milagro for dinner. It was the best I've had in awhile - and I live and eat out in NYC frequently.
"Two Nights at Mandarina"
06/28/14 Fang7 Milwaukee, Wisconsin
We stayed at the Mandarina for two nights. The room was nice (fan and A/C both worked) and had a safe and TV. The bathroom had a curtain instead of a door, but it was fine. The staff was great and really helped you determine what to do when to make the most of your visit. We hiked to Manuel Antonio from the hotel early in the morning based on this advice - it was worth it. There were very few groups out yet, so the private beaches had no one or just a few people. Later in the morning and early afternoon there were A LOT of people, so we left to do other things! Breakfast options were also good. The pool looked nice, but we never used it. The "workout room" is 2 or 3 outdated machines, but an option I suppose.
"Great Quaint Spot... but the in-room Wi-Fi is spotty at best."
06/17/14 MadRod787 San Juan, Puerto Rico
We went to the Manuel Antonio area without any reservations. We tried a few places, but none were up to our standards in cleanliness or technology capabilities. La Mandarina was recommended to us by another hotel, classifying it as gay-friendly. The accommodations were comfortable, but the in-room Wi-Fi was spotty at best. You need to be agile as the only access to the rooms is via a main staircase. The breakfast was OK but I would have rather have fresh fruit juice instead of the packaged artificially tasting options given.

We stayed at the hotel in May and we loved it. The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially the lady at the reception (I'm sorry I didn't catch your name!), she showed us where we were located in relation to all the main attractions and gave us a map. There were also beach towel available in reception for no extra charge. Our rooms were ready even though we arrived early and were all we needed for a very comfortable stay. We had to check out at 2pm but our transport was not booked until 5pm, the hotel very kindly stored our bags for us while we went to the national park in the morning and then allowed us to use the pool and shower facilities before we left at 5pm. Thank you for a fantastic stay, we will definitely recommend you to everyone!
