"Andaz gets it right"
Really brilliant room with lots of natural materials and textures. Smart design with closet console creating hallway between sleeping area and bathroom and balcony area. Very good food though not too many options outside of the hotel nearby. Perfect for three days of rest and relaxation with a loved one.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beautiful location/vegetation, Very Private"
Andaz is not a typical Hyatt resort. It targets "Bohemian Professionals". Most guests were in a 25-35 age group. If you are 50+, 60+, 70+, you must be fit (lots of steps to climb). We arrived during the rainy season and there was not a droplet of rain; blue sky and sun every day and no mosquitos (Papagayo Penninsula!). We had all pools and two beaches […] to ourselves; one with volcanic (black) sand is where you get (complimentary) kayaks, paddle boards, snorkeling gear and comfortable chaises; the second beach (golden sand) is better for swimming; both are surrounded by beautiful native vegetation (tropical dry forest with lots of cacti). Only one restaurant, RIO BHONGO was opened (the other two will reopen in high season); like most people visiting Andaz, we made “mandatory” dining trips to Four Seasons, Prieta Beach Club, and the Dive Bar (at the marina). The resort provides free shuttles to each until 6pm; we paid $12.50 for returns to the hotel. A trip (15/20/10 minutes) to either one is worth the return fee (spectacular views; lots of monkeys; awesome birds). Andaz's Rio Bhongo restaurant was very good; for half price (when compared to FS) it offers delicious food/very good service. Overall, Andaz is a work in progress; a beautiful resort that can one day get 5 stars but for now guests should be prepare for some glitches and have a great time despite mishaps (Ignacio and Rebeka are superb problem solvers). The Andaz Papagayo was perfect for what we wanted after our wedding. Something relaxing, clean, private and far from everything. We are typically active travellers, but just wanted to relax on our honeymoon after a long wedding planning process and week. This was perfect. There are only two other hotels near by and the closest town is 40minutes away. […] It was also slow season so it felt like we had the place to ourselves. If you want to be closer to towns and sights, you might want to look somewhere else. If you want to relax in a secluded area, with great service, beautiful property this is the place. I will admit you don't get a true sense of Costa Rica, but that was not what we were looking for. Also, I say great service. The people were great, but service was slow at times. That being said, there is no reason to rush in Costa Rica anyways Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

All was wonderful. The beach is unique, very peaceful and clear.Genuine Expedia guest review
We just returned from 6 days at the hotel and absolutely loved our stay. The rooms are very romantic, including the amazing shower that the glass doors opens onto your balcony so it feels like you are showering in the hills where the hotel is located. Very romantic spot, perfect for a couple. The resort has more of a contemporary feel and the staff […] is younger. The hotel only opened in December so the formal restaurant is not open but there are two restaurants available. The tapas restaurant is fun. Staff is incredibly nice and accomodating, we truly enjoyed our stay. The Four Seasons is next door and there is transportion available. I, however, are very happy we stayed at the Andaz over the Four Seasons given the personal service available and the difference in price. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

The property is absolutely beautiful, spectacular views, clean and every request fulfilled. The customer service is impeccable and fully accommodating to all your needs.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Wonderful resort but very secluded"
We had a great stay - they even upgraded our room which has a beautiful view - and would highly recommend the place. We were there in the off season and practically had the place to ourselves. Monkeys linger around and exitic birds come and go, which makes for nice traditional Costa Rican experience. However, the hotel is difficult to get to and once […] you're on the property you are at the mercy of hotel food costs and activities are limited and pricey. Beautiful beaches are closeby - I would suggest taking a jet ski out early/mid morning to see the surrounding areas (we went in the afternoon and it was way too wavey - not worth it). Paddle boards and kayaks are complimentary for an hour but unfortunately you can't go very far. Walkways are steep on the grounds but they have many golf carts available to help get you around if needed. Staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
If you want to go somewhere to relax, I definitely say Andaz is the place. Probally the best room I have stayed in and the service is awesome! The hotel over looks Cuelbra Bay, I definitely recommend getting a Partial Bay view room. You have a little more privacy and you still get an excellent view of the bay. The mini bar is complimentary and at the […] pools, they are always walking around with free water. My boyfriend and I stayed for 3 nights and it was the perfect amount of time to wind down. It is located on the Pennisula next to the Four Seasons, so a little secluded from towns, but that is what we were looking for. The Tapas restuarant is a MUST!! I can't explain how delicious it was and great sized portions (especially for tapas)! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Beautiful New property has a few kinks."
Newly opened property needs to work out a few kinks. The breakfast buffet is a poor value with limited options. Try the Four Seasons its cheaper and offers much more. Kids food offerings need to be expanded. Hotdogs, Pizza, quesadillas Fish Taco's etc. at poolside and room service also please! Overall the food and drinks in all the restaurants on property […] were quite good but expensive. Also the kids programing pretty much was guests supervising their kids in the pool. The setting for the hotel sits sublimely above the gulf on the hillside. Its quite spread out so if walking is challenging then you might be calling for carts to assist. Beach access is also fairly steep so you might puff a bit coming back up. The pools are beautiful. The architecture very harmonized to the location. East facing so morning sun is powerful. Disappointingly, though, we paid the hotel $50.00 for sunscreen that cost $15.00 in town. What's up with that? Despite a few kinks our family really enjoyed our stay at Andaz Papagayo and will return again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
It was very nice to be at a brand new resort. While they have a few minor quirks to workout, it is amazing! Go to the beach club while you are there. The hotel will drive you there without any charge before 6 pm. A lot of visitors from the four seasons visit as well. The best restaurant on the property is Ostra, seafood restaurant, very nice atmosphere, […] service and food!!! The spa was amazing, the watersports are free excluding day boat trips or jet skis. This should be something the hotel markets more. You should book hotel travel from airport by the #1 company Costa Rica tours. It's $80 and very professional. The property was very relaxing and the rooms were great!! Good pick! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Excellent hotel. Service and food quality are indeed very good. Nothing negative to say about the days we spent at Andaz other than saying that the days we spent over there came by to fast. For sure coming back again.Regards,GGGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"One of the best...!"

Really can't say enough about this hotel… We had guarded expectations with it being a new property and all but certainly any small shortcomings that were there were purely because of that.... and they were always over shadowed by the enthusiasm and positivity of the whole staff. The property itself is a gem carved into the hillside overlooking the bay. Each room is beautifully appointed with multiple individual elements of luxury and comfort not often seen in other four and five star properties. The indoor-outdoor showers and controlled lighting and climate control systems make your room an oasis of privacy and luxury. The multiple outdoor pool areas were extremely comfortable, contemporary designs and very well serviced by bright, smiling people that seem to all clearly enjoy their work! We traveled around the peninsula a good deal because we had a rental car and spent some time at the Four Seasons resort where we had initially intended to stay. While I always love the Four Seasons property and brand… The style and ease with which they manage and work with their clientele at the Andaz is decidedly different. Casual, hip and dare I say, simply happier.... They translate that into the joy of your vacation. The experience of a foreign vacation for our family has as much to do about the people as it is the place and Costa Rican hospitality and individuality shine through here. This is a relatively new resort and there are some minor kinks to be worked out but they are well on their way under positive and confident leadership with Michael, their general manager on site. If you get a chance to visit with others on his staff...Cesar, Javier, Maribel and many others I wish I could list here....You'll come away from Costa Rica with memories of a lifetime.

We drove to Papagayo from Tamarindo. We saw one billboard that let us know we were on the right road. Other than the billboard, there were no signs. We were not even sure we had arrived to the hotel when we pulled up to the large gate with the security guard. Please put up some signs!!! We arrived at the hotel around 5 p.m. My husband and I are in our mid 30s and the receptionist staff basically ignored us (because young people can't have $$, right??) Once someone finally acknowledged that we were waiting, they told us that our room was not ready (even though check-in time was hours before). They offered to give us a tour (likely so we would be distracted) but we were exhausted from the long drive. So we sat and sat in the lobby. Finally, a manager offered to buy us drinks at Rio Bhongo while we waited. We learned from the pool staff the next day that the room was only at 80% occupancy when we checked in so it was unclear why they did not upgrade us to another room instead of forcing us to wait SEVERAL hours past check-in time for a room. Once we finally got to our room, it was legit. Loved the decor especially that lamp above the desk. A/C was so strong that we opened the patio doors just to warm up the room a bit. Awesome shower that opened into bathroom and onto patio. Automatic light sensor when walking to bathroom at night - great touch. On the first day, we could hear howler monkeys from our room. Didn't have a view of much from our patio other than trees. We were at the end of the building next to the adult pool. We called concierge for information on tennis and the activities available at the hotel. The phone just rang and rang. Finally, the concierge came on and he did not know information about the tennis facilities. Really odd. He did send a follow-up email with the information later that night. We called twice (both the front desk and housekeeping) for more coffee the next morning. After two hours of waiting for our coffee to arrive, we gave up. The in-room complimentary drinks and snacks are pretty lame - we don't drink soda and the other drinks were full of sugar. Snacks were unappealing as well. Gym was one of the nicest I've used at a hotel. Lots of equipment and clean. Relaxed at the adult pool one afternoon. Food and drinks were okay, nothing worthy of the expensive price. Saw approx. 10 monkeys (including some baby monkeys) play right above the pool and then migrate in the late afternoon back up to the trees on the hill - so cool. They really need to have some music at the adult pool - it was boring. Because this hotel is so remote, you're forced to eat on property. None of the meals at the Andaz were amazing. We tried Rio Bongo for dinner and breakfast, Chao Pescao for dinner, and Ostra for a ceviche class. The coffee bar served adequate coffee (but it was like $7.50 for an iced coffee!). The chef at the ceviche class was nice, but in all honesty, he basically just made ceviche for each of the couples rather than letting us do it - isn't that the point of a cooking class? We were stoked to be able to paddle board at this hotel, especially because the boards were free. However, when we walked down to the beach our first morning, the staff person advised us that 3 of the 5 boards were broken and there was a 4 hour wait to get a board! We kayaked instead that morning. When we went down to the beach on our second morning, we sat there and waited 30 min. for the attendant to return from a kayak class. Once he returned, he gave the 2 boards to 2 women that also took the kayak class because they "asked first." So we had to wait over one hour to get the boards and when we finally got on the water, the winds had picked up and we couldn't stay out there much longer than 15 min. It was not fun at all as the waves kept knocking us into the rocks. We did go on the Nature Walk our last morning. It was nice to explore but unfortunately we did not see much wildlife. The employee helped us on multiple occasions and he was really sweet. We're glad we got a good deal at this hotel through Vacationist. Otherwise, we would have been really annoyed. Not a 5 star property, not close. Property has a long way to go to merit the high room prices.

This was a perfect 6 night stay from check-in to check out. What really made this trip memorable was the service we felt incredibly accommodated especially from Cesar, Alan, Carolina and Carlos. Superb service. Although it is a bit secluded Andaz is designed for those looking for a retreat/escape and if you get bored there are activities like kayaking, paddle boarding and jet skis. There is also an old school VW shuttle bus to take you to nearby places like the Fours Seasons beach club or the Marina. I rented a car since my mother wanted to travel outside the resort as well, they offer free valet parking too. We spoke to one of the waiters who worked at several other high end resorts around Costa Rica and he said this couldn't have been a better choice, agreed! Can't wait to return!
Spent a few nights as a family of 4 at this wonderful property. It is new and luxurious but more importantly, remains intimate. They did an exceptional job of maintaining the integrity of the natural landscape. Everything felt seamless; lots of wood, bamboo, flora and fauna. Everything is open and airy. They made way for the hotel without disturbing the unique enviornment. So lovely. Cheers to the architect. We saw lots of monkeys but naturally, not b/c they hung fruit from trees as in other hotels. The rooms are terrific. Big, modern, sleek and warm. My favorite aspect; the shower that can be indoor/outdoor. The food is good, not wonderful but wisely kids often eat free if the adult buys a meal. Instead of getting gauged by the food ala Four Seasons, the meals felt reasonably priced as did the drinks. Spa rooms were unbelievable. The nicest I've ever been. Full glass wall where I watched the monkeys while getting a pedicure. One caveat is there is a lot of walking at this property. I liked that but some may not and it is veritical to boot. Lastly, the staff is wonderful. Not totally polished yet but friendly and accomodating.

Andaz hotel offers not only an excellent room to rest. Its restaurants are the best in the area. (I vacation in peninsula papagayo every year and this year I eat the best) Loved the food.(Fresh and high quality), Service was second to none. My friends an I had a vacation to remember. What else can you ask for? Beautiful Beaches, amazing room, breathtaking views, delicious food and best of all: THE BEST SERVICE EVER!!!!
"Quiet and wonderful"
08/25/14 LM-Girard Denver, Colorado
My wife and I stayed four nights at Andaz and had a perfect time. The service, as mentioned on many other reviews, was absolutely fantastic. Special mention goes to Caesar, Xira, Mariano, Kevin and Keylin. The hotel is very new and clean with a modern yet comfortable feel. The rooms are well designed and are very functional. We stayed in Building #3 and had an ocean view, shower that opened up to the balcony outside, comfortable bed, small mini bar and a really cool beach bag. The architecture is perfect and blends in nicely with the topography and the surrounding vegetation. The food was very expensive for the quality. Not that the food was bad by any means, but it was expensive. On top of that, all food and beverage have taxes and service charges that amount to 23%. By the time we had lunch, drink or two at the pool, dinner and a drink, we were consistently on or over $200 per day in food and beverage. The location is a little isolated. That has it's pros and cons, but that is part of the reason we picked Costa Rica. Many reviewers will, due to proximity, look at both this hotel and the Four Seasons. If you are looking for a calm get away at a nice new hotel with incredibly friendly staff, then I'd choose Andaz. If you are looking for amenities galore, huge beach and don't mind kids running around, then maybe the Four Seasons would be better. Food and beverage prices are similar and the quality of the food is about the same. Overall, we would happily stay at Andaz again. In fact, we look forward to our next visit. If you choose Andaz, you will not be disappointed.

Well designed ,beautiful modern hotel ,very exclusive, great rooms, swimming pools etc, so it is great for an all inclusive luxury holiday. But beware that there is NO BEACH to speak of except a tiny strip fronting the ocean. So don't get conned by all the photographs showing you the blue ocean. Food could be better too . Not worth staying 3 days as there are no activities and nothing close by.

We stayed two nights here at the Andaz and loved the visit. From the minute we arrived to the time we left, the service was exceptional. We kayaked, did yoga, stand up paddle boarding, steam room, etc. The food was good but, I think that more variety would serve this resort well. Did I mention that the bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. Still dream about it.
"Nice hotel but fatally flawed customer service."

This is a difficult review to write as there are many good things about this hotel. It has a very good location and is built sympathetically onto the hillside overlooking a beautiful bay. The staff were generally very friendly, but we had a number of issues, which I really don't want to go into in depth here, but which I feel a service focused hotel would have addressed and which the Andaz Papagayo Resort didn't. Examples were getting an unwanted wake up call at 3.05am, having to make multiple calls to get the air-conditioning unit mended, making multiple queries to reception staff, which were never addressed and watching our luggage roll at high speed down one of the hills the hotel is build on, after it was dropped off a hotel golf-cart. While I cannot recommend the hotel, I would highly recommend Rimowa luggage as despite a high speed crash the luggage survived intact. I anticipate better service from a five star hotel and certainly expected more from a Hyatt. The level of customer service we received make this hotel very poor value for money. I have previously stayed in two different Grand Hyatt hotels and had nothing but praise for them, but this experience and the response of Hyatt to complaints about the service I received will make me think very hard before ever using any Hyatt again. We weren't the only guests in the hotel who were having problems and as it stands I would certainly encourage potential guests to think very carefully before staying here.
