"Really nice hotel, peaceful."
The Andaz is a beautiful hotel, with decent food (could be cheaper) and absolutely gorgeous views.Genuine Expedia guest review
The resort is lovely - nice architecture - good access to amenities of the adjacent Four Seasons resort - nice pools - excellent service. There's not much to do in Papagayo without having a car and will to travel up to 2 hours. Surfing is 1.5-2 hours away.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Gorgeous place with friendly honest staff"
My boyfriend and I got the andaz king size room. We drove to the property in our rental and it's a compound. There's a massive long driveway that's gated that leads to another gate before you end up at the "lobby". This lobby is the most impressive I've ever seen. It was like a bandshell made with bamboo. At reception, you're given water and a cool […] towel while you sit and enjoy the view. Jay jay helped us tour around the grounds in his golf cart. When we finally got to our room, our jaws dropped. They offer you hats, robes, a beach bag, complimentary mini bar and much more. The shower opens out to your terrace where you can gaze out to the sunrise and marina. Absolutely gorgeous! We enjoyed the facility and all amenities during our stay. My only complaint was that our last day, the steam room, which we were both dying to try wasn't open. We kept being told it'd be open in another hour, then another half hour then they told us it needed repairs. Bummer! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Beautiful resort. Great food. Wonderful service. Somewhat remote and very private. Arranged tours thru hotel and they were very professional and good. Will come back soon hopefully.Genuine Expedia guest review
We went during the rainy season and it wasn't bad at all. The rain would come in the afternoon for about an hour. If you are going during the rainy season definitely plan all your activities in the AM. Hotel was very child friendly but also many couples were there as well. Pros: - beautiful and clean room - lots of free amenities (nice his/hers hats […] for the sun, flip flops, water, snacks) - also provided a YSL tote for the beach and umbrellas for the afternoon rain - free beach activities (jet skis, kayaking, paddle boards, snorkels) - onsite car rental - friendly and helpful staff Cons: - no AC in restaurants - although open air restaurants are beautiful after climbing hills and stairs to get to them you want some AC - long walk to any where within the hotel (with lots of stairs). the good thing is you can call a club car to give you a ride to your destination. Andaz Papagayo Resort is spectacular! The resort is pristine in appearance and comfort. It is a fusion of Nature and modernism so you have the comforts of a modern resort combined with the nurturing and healing aspects of Nature. I found many isolated spots in the resort that allowed me to write, meditate and relax. There are ample pools (including […] an adult-only) bathing area and you walk through a forested area to reach the beach. The staff is wonderful. Andrea and Michael who work in the open air lobby are extraordinarily helpful, accommodating and kind. My stay at the resort was wonderful, and I hope to come back again! "Great place to relax."
Great pool and lots of free beach activities (Paddle boards, kayaks and snorkeling.) not much night life but food and drinks at tapas restaurant are fun. Staff are friendly and very helpful.Genuine Expedia guest review
My husband and I visited the Andaz Papagayo Resort for a quick, long weekend getaway in July 2014. The resort is GORGEOUS and, having just opened in December 2013, in excellent condition. The staff was very friendly and accommodating-- we were travelling from the US and spoke minimal Spanish, but everyone there seemed to speak English. Pros: -Luxurious […] rooms -Beautiful and relaxing infinity pools -Private beach with complimentary water gear (kayaks, paddle boards, etc.) Cons: -Lots of animals roam around the resort. This was a pro for spotting monkeys in trees and even iguanas on rocks by the pool, but a definite con when a large coati (basically a raccoon) would walk through restaurants every hour of the day while dining. -The resort is very large and not very well lit. So, getting around at night is challenging. Conveniently, you can call the front desk to request a golf cart to transport you, but the carts are not always available. (One evening, we called for a cart and nearly 30 minutes later, one had not arrived and we walked back to our room-- well over a 1/4 mile-- in complete darkness. This was a bit scary given aforementioned animals walking around resort.) -Food is exorbitantly priced. ($50 for a simple eggs and coffee breakfast for two.) But, this is to be expected. So, we weren't too upset/ disappointed by this. All in all, we had an incredible time. I would go back, but my husband was a bit turned off by the animals. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great staff, Great isolated location"
The hotel staff were outstanding. They went out of their way to be nice and help in every way possible. What you need to know about the hotel location though is that it is isolated and there is no easy way of getting to any nearby towns or attractions without renting a car, or paying a lot (a whole lot) for a private driver. This was fine for us because […] we were trying to get far away from everything and only planned two trips into the towns. If you are looking for night life or touristy areas like Coco Beach and Tamarindo this is probably not the location to stay unless you have a rental car. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

This is an amazing boutique-like hotel nestled on the hills of Papagayo Peninsula. The hotel is brand-new (we stayed in July 2014), super clean and with amazing approach to design - the grounds, the rooms, the restaurants are impeccable. A beautiful property with a very friendly and helpful staff. The property is relatively new (Dec 13) and there is still room for some improvement but the staff is reseptive and anxious to grow. "Beautiful location/vegetation, Very Private"
Andaz is not a typical Hyatt resort. It targets "Bohemian Professionals". Most guests were in a 25-35 age group. If you are 50+, 60+, 70+, you must be fit (lots of steps to climb). We arrived during the rainy season and there was not a droplet of rain; blue sky and sun every day and no mosquitos (Papagayo Penninsula!). We had all pools and two beaches […] to ourselves; one with volcanic (black) sand is where you get (complimentary) kayaks, paddle boards, snorkeling gear and comfortable chaises; the second beach (golden sand) is better for swimming; both are surrounded by beautiful native vegetation (tropical dry forest with lots of cacti). Only one restaurant, RIO BHONGO was opened (the other two will reopen in high season); like most people visiting Andaz, we made “mandatory” dining trips to Four Seasons, Prieta Beach Club, and the Dive Bar (at the marina). The resort provides free shuttles to each until 6pm; we paid $12.50 for returns to the hotel. A trip (15/20/10 minutes) to either one is worth the return fee (spectacular views; lots of monkeys; awesome birds). Andaz's Rio Bhongo restaurant was very good; for half price (when compared to FS) it offers delicious food/very good service. Overall, Andaz is a work in progress; a beautiful resort that can one day get 5 stars but for now guests should be prepare for some glitches and have a great time despite mishaps (Ignacio and Rebeka are superb problem solvers). The Andaz Papagayo was perfect for what we wanted after our wedding. Something relaxing, clean, private and far from everything. We are typically active travellers, but just wanted to relax on our honeymoon after a long wedding planning process and week. This was perfect. There are only two other hotels near by and the closest town is 40minutes away. […] It was also slow season so it felt like we had the place to ourselves. If you want to be closer to towns and sights, you might want to look somewhere else. If you want to relax in a secluded area, with great service, beautiful property this is the place. I will admit you don't get a true sense of Costa Rica, but that was not what we were looking for. Also, I say great service. The people were great, but service was slow at times. We just returned from 6 days at the hotel and absolutely loved our stay. The rooms are very romantic, including the amazing shower that the glass doors opens onto your balcony so it feels like you are showering in the hills where the hotel is located. Very romantic spot, perfect for a couple. The resort has more of a contemporary feel and the staff […] is younger. The hotel only opened in December so the formal restaurant is not open but there are two restaurants available. The tapas restaurant is fun. "Wonderful resort but very secluded"
We had a great stay - they even upgraded our room which has a beautiful view - and would highly recommend the place. We were there in the off season and practically had the place to ourselves. Monkeys linger around and exitic birds come and go, which makes for nice traditional Costa Rican experience. However, the hotel is difficult to get to and once […] you're on the property you are at the mercy of hotel food costs and activities are limited and pricey. Beautiful beaches are closeby - I would suggest taking a jet ski out early/mid morning to see the surrounding areas (we went in the afternoon and it was way too wavey - not worth it). Paddle boards and kayaks are complimentary for an hour but unfortunately you can't go very far. Walkways are steep on the grounds but they have many golf carts available to help get you around if needed. Staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Beautiful New property has a few kinks."
Newly opened property needs to work out a few kinks. The breakfast buffet is a poor value with limited options. Try the Four Seasons its cheaper and offers much more. Kids food offerings need to be expanded. Hotdogs, Pizza, quesadillas Fish Taco's etc. at poolside and room service also please! Overall the food and drinks in all the restaurants on property […] were quite good but expensive. Also the kids programing pretty much was guests supervising their kids in the pool. The setting for the hotel sits sublimely above the gulf on the hillside. Its quite spread out so if walking is challenging then you might be calling for carts to assist. Beach access is also fairly steep so you might puff a bit coming back up. The pools are beautiful. The architecture very harmonized to the location. East facing so morning sun is powerful. Disappointingly, though, we paid the hotel $50.00 for sunscreen that cost $15.00 in town. What's up with that? Despite a few kinks our family really enjoyed our stay at Andaz Papagayo and will return again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
It was very nice to be at a brand new resort. While they have a few minor quirks to workout, it is amazing! Go to the beach club while you are there. The hotel will drive you there without any charge before 6 pm. A lot of visitors from the four seasons visit as well. The best restaurant on the property is Ostra, seafood restaurant, very nice atmosphere, […] service and food!!! The spa was amazing, the watersports are free excluding day boat trips or jet skis. This should be something the hotel markets more. You should book hotel travel from airport by the #1 company Costa Rica tours. It's $80 and very professional. "Forever in our family's memory!"
I just came from a 7-night stay at this property and I can only tell great things about it. It was our second time at this hotel, and we plan to come back. I traveled with my wife and two kids. The hotel is set on the cliffs facing the gorgeous Papagayo Gulf. Nature is abundant! Here are the highlights of this hotel: 1 - Staff is extremely friendly and attentive; 2 -The property is immaculately clean; 3 - Gorgeous turquoise infinity pools; 3 - Kayak and Paddle Boards available at their private beach. (It is included in the rate); 4 - Delicious and healthy breakfast at the Rio Bongo restaurant; 5 - Rooms are spacious and accommodate two adults and two children comfortably. The rooms are modern yet warm (natural wood furnitures) with amazing views! 6 - Kids Club (They call it Cambi): This should be another chapter. The staff is just awesome! They don't watch the kids; they play with them! We don't let our children playing videos games and watching cartoons all day long. So we don't like too much the idea of dropping them at the hotel's kids club, but this one is different. They play game boards, sing songs, take the kids outside to create things, plant little trees and so on! By the time, we picked them up; they were all sweating and happy! A word about some of other reviews says about the hotel: - Having to walk up down the hills: They have golf carts to take guests around the property, but seriously, if you don't like to walk you shouldn't go to a beach resort! - The hotel is far from civilization: Yes it is. In my opinion that is the beauty of it! We rented a car. The hotel doesn't charge for parking, and rental cars are cheap at Liberia's airport. Average of U$25.00 per day with insurance (small/economical cars - no fancy SUVs for that price of course!). We were able to get around easily. Everything is at least 40 minutes away, but again, you will enjoy beautiful views (beaches, mountains, etc.). The Ticos (Costa Ricans) are friendly and always willing to help. Most of them speak enough english. - The beach is not a white-sand type. Yes, the sand at the hotel's beach is dark, but that doesn't make the beach ugly or dirty! It is what it is. Costa Rica is surrounded by volcanos, and that is reflected in the landscape. The water is turquoise/green, clear, and warm! My kids loved playing at the beach!
"Worst Hotel Experience Ever"
12/23/14 PstarTraveler Clovis, California
First the positive. The hotel is located on the cliffs with a nice view overlooking the Gulf of Papagayo and it is not far from the airport in Liberia. Now the reality. There is no beach in front of the hotel. You have to walk a ways to reach some sand. Rooms are okay but the food is mediocre and overpriced as is the hotel. Although it is part of the Hyatt Hotels chain, this hotel's management acts like it is pinching pesos and is teetering on the edge of closure. Unless they think they can sell you an add-on to your stay, the management staff of the hotel is extremely rude and non-responsive. I booked an Andaz Large Suite, their nicest room, in September to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We paid more than $3,100 in advance on a non-refundable rate for our early December booking. Unfortunately, a week before the trip, a family illness forced us to postpone the trip. I contacted the hotel and explained the situation and simply asked for a future credit. Both American and Delta Airlines gave us credit as did the other hotel on our trip. Andaz then told me they would give me NOTHING. I asked to have my request forwarded to the hotel manager as I was only asking for a credit and not a refund. I then tried contacting the hotel to follow-up four different times over 6 days and was completely ignored. This hotel doesn't understand the basic idea of customer service nor does it value its reputation. If they had given me even a partial credit I probably would have still stayed there and spent even more money. Can you say moronically short-sighted? It's the people who make for great hotel hospitality and this place, and it's parent company Hyatt Hotels don't have a clue. Stay away or you might get screwed like us.
"Great hotel, nice details"

We had a wonderful stay at Andaz Papagayo. The design of the hotel is beautiful, with emphasis on outdoors spaces, impressive views, a lot of details and very nice rooms. The service is great with all staff being very friendly and making everything to make you enjoy you stay. We had a great diner at Ostra, the formal restaurant. The food was delicious, the waiter's recomendations was perfect and they also have a nice wine selection. We were impressed with Clark's cocktails at Chau Pescado bar, probably the best cocktail list in Costa Rica. And the staff was so nice that they found us a chocolate brownie even if all the kitchens were closed. Breakfast buffet is also very good, all very fresh and with a wide variety of choices. We definitely look forward to come back for a few relaxing days.

We loved everything from the pacific waters and amazingly helpful staff to the very clean rooms and thoughtful gestures. The Andaz Resort is absolutely perfect!!! This resort is beautiful, staff was very attentive and friendly, and every meal we had at the restaurants were delicious. We booked amazing trips through Costa Rica ISSYS tours Papagayo, we booked zip lining tours, boat river tour in Palo Verde and white water rafting. Whatever we wanted they had, and they also offer private services which added a great value to our trips. Back to the resort, it has astonishing views and facilities, we felt we had a day in Paradise. Tip: Look for special offers in low season! We loved the Andaz and would strongly consider going back next year with the whole family. Amazing property and incredible service, thank you!
"Understated luxury in a beautiful location"
12/19/14 idries Chicago, Illinois
My family and I came to the Andaz Peninsula Papagayo resort after leaving another resort after only one night. From the moment we drove onto the property, the Andaz provided the experience of under stated Costa Rican luxury that we were looking for. The hotel is a straight forward (three turns only) approximately 30 minute drive from the airport in Liberia. As soon as we arrived, our car was taken by the valet, all of our luggage was emptied and we were escorted to the front desk where we were given a nice pineapple mint beverage and cool towels. CHECKIN: Was quick, easy and efficient. We were taken from the lobby area to our rooms via golf cart. Despite having made our reservations the day prior, we were given three adjacent rooms (with two of them adjoining). THE ROOMS: Were true understated luxury. The rainfall showers open out onto the patio which allows you to take your shower indoors while feeling like you are outside. The balcony has a small couch and chairs and all of the rooms seem to have a nice bay view (though some are obscured partially by the forest). The flat screen TVs have CATV with many English speaking channels as well as a built-in AV-center with HDMI and USB connections. IN-ROOM AMENITIES: In addition to the usual amenities (TV, telephone, bath and shower amenities), each room comes with two sun hats that guests are free to take as well as two pairs of flip-flops. The mini-bar is also stocked with free drinks and snacks daily and free wifi is available resort wide. RESTAURANTS/ROOM SERVICE: There are three restaurants including a seafood restaurant and a tapas bar. Breakfast in the morning is both a la carte as well as buffet. The buffet selection was good and the omelet bar was excellent. As is typical of most resorts, the prices are a bit on the high side, but nothing beyond that they I have encountered at other resorts. THE SPA: I had a 90 minute deep tissue massage at the ONDA spa which was also an enjoyable experience. The spa itself sits atop a hill which provides nice resort and bay views. I was given a nice cool towel and beverage upon arrival. The treatments are given in individual rooms that also overlook the resort and the bay. You are offered a choice of sound tracks and can use the steam room at the end of your treatment. The treatments are maybe a bit more expensive than what I have encountered at other resorts but nothing too out of the ordinary. I paid $225 for the 90-minute massage. THE CONCERIERGE: All staff in the lobby also serve as concierge. They have multiple iPads loaded with information regarding the local tours and activities. They will book your desired activities on the spot and call you later to confirm. My overall experience at the Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort was phenomenal. The staff are polite, helpful and always cheerful. The resort is located amongst Costa Rica's natural beauty and the design of the resort itself defines understated luxury. The services and amenities make this amongst one of the best resorts that I have been to and I will definitely return. In my last two pictures you see coiled USB charging cords. Everyday during maid service and again during turn down, the room attendants would coil the USB cords at our bedsides. That is what I call attention to detail. I can without a doubt recommend the Andaz to anyone coming to the Guanacaste!
"Stylish and beautiful"

Andaz is a word that means style. Appropriately named this resort is beautiful; modern and exquisitely maintained. The staff is attentive and welcoming. Fabio in the front office is the best among them. All rooms have great bay views. Restaurants, all three are high quality and delicious. Very nicely landscaped. Property designer deserves the highest compliments. Little extras like complimentary in room refreshments, beach slippers and hats are a nice touch. The only suggestion for improvement is more lighting on walkways. Recommend it for couples. Rowdy, party happy groups should opt for a different place.

We really had a great time here. Be prepared, the meals are expensive and there aren't any local alternatives for dining unless you have a car. If you rent a car, a GPS would be useful to find the hotel - it was a bit tricky the first time. Once you find it, the setting is beautiful and the hotel staff is great - they are mostly new, but really go out of their way to make sure you are having a good time. I'd go again for a relaxing vacation in off-peak (the restaurants are small, we were there when the place was at 50% capacity, I'm not sure how the service would be when the occupancy rate is higher).
12/16/14 Maria B
Gorgeous views and rooms, lovely people, delicious food with nice variety in 3 restaurants and a good variety of activities, this is a truly beautiful resort where we had an amazing time. We found it by accident and now can't wait to go back -- it was a perfect experience from the delicious welcome drink to the included kayaking and stand up paddling where we saw a giant sea turtle swim by and snorkling with beautiful fish, to just hanging poolside - ah, paradise!
"Beautiful property, poor service"
12/15/14 nafa2 Washington DC, District of Columbia
I had a nice two nights at the Andaz Papagayo, but it was certainly not worth the prices they're charging, and not up to par with other Andaz hotels. The location is only good if you don't plan on ever leaving the hotel to enjoy the area's attractions. It's only about 30 minutes from the airport, and the road is not bad between the hotel and the airport. It's on a beach that's good for swimming and kayaking, but if you want to see wildlife or do hiking or anything, you'll have to drive at least an hour. The architecture and room designs are beautiful, and the rooms are really big, with a good-sized bed, desk, seating area, and balcony lounge. It's very peaceful looking setup. The bed is extremely comfortable. The amenities are decent, and like others have mentioned, the minibar (no alcohol) is included. Not not all rooms have a view. We had a standard room with a view of a big tree. The light switches were extremely confusing, which was a minor annoyance. Every light seemed to have four different buttons on it to dim/brighten and turn on/off, though they always seemed to do different things. The bathroom was a mixed bag. On the plus side, the shower was huge and awesome, and I loved their robes. On the minus side, there is no privacy on the toilet. You can see someone's silhouette when they're on the toilet and hear every noise, so this hotel is only for families or couples who already know each other really well. No privacy whatsoever. Also, you get used sandals instead of fresh slippers, and you get used hats as well, which you're allowed to keep if you want a hat or flip flops worn by a bunch of other guests for some reason. Food was really expensive, especially with the 23% surcharge added to every bill for tax and tip. On the plus side, the quality was not terrible, pretty typical hotel food, and portions are generally big enough for two people to share. We had breakfast included in our rate, but without it, it would have cost about $70 for two people to eat at the breakfast buffet, which was just OK. Also, the breakfast buffet had no fruit on it, which was strange since this is a country known for it's delicious fruit. Service in the restaurants was good, but service to the rooms was horrible. The ice machines didn't work for the duration of our stay, and twice when we called for ice, it never came, and we had to call again. The hotel was nice enough to comp breakfast to our rooms since we had to check out before breakfast started in the restaurant. We ordered two scrambled eggs with toast, plus an order of french toast. They promised it would be there in under 30 minutes, but it took 40. Normally, this wouldn't bother me, but we really needed it to be there in the 30 minutes because we needed to check out to get to the airport. When we got the breakfast, there was no toast with it, and the server kind of argued with us saying that we'd only ordered french toast and no regular toast. I would have argued more, but we knew it would probably take them at least another 20 minutes to bring us the toast we ordered. Not really luxury service. Overall, I did enjoy my two nights here, but I'm not sure I'd stay again. For the price, I'd rather be at a hotel closer to the area's attractions.
"Special Luxury Resort in Costa Rica"
12/14/14 lovenewdestinations New York City, New York
The Andaz lives up to exactly what they say they will deliver - culture and authenticity in all they do. We found this in the special decor touches, to the elevated yet approachable service to amenities that were customized for a special Costa Rican stay. We were impressed with the entire resort. The architecture & design elements are stunning! The spa was amazing & had professional & well-trained therapists. Everyone on the staff was attentive & kind. It felt like a genuine care & interest in ensuring our stay was enjoyable. We traveled with our daughter & they made our stay perfect. We learned that they cater to families with offerings such as the Cambi /Kids Club, classes (bracelet making) and, of course, the backdrop of being in Costa Rica to go on adventures. We happened to go to Rio Perdido, which we highly recommend...even if it is a 2+ hour car ride (most on roads that are dirt paved!). The food & cocktails were the best at Cao Pescao, Ostra had a pleasant ambience & good cocktails (the food was good). Even room service was really well done (arrived in a picnic basket!). The coffee bar was a highlight of ours around 3PM every day...amazing coffee options. The resort is spread out & requires a lot of walking...although you can certainly opt to hop in a golf cart. Not recommended for those who don't enjoy some exercise. While the beach is not that desirable for an all-day stint, there are a lot of water activities (some free). Overall, it was a beautiful property with luxury amenities & service that provides a relaxing respite with the option of experiencing all the adventures that come with a visit to Costa Rica.
