"Decent room, but very noisy location!"
The hotel was convenient to just about everything, with restaurants on every corner, as well as bars and pastry shops. The only real problem was the noise. This can partly be due to the surrounding establishments, not so much the hotel itself. However, it wasn't sound proofed, which didn't help. All in all, a decent place to stay, but don't expect much […] sleep. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cheap and good place to stay"
Everything about this hotel is good except it is very noisy in the rooms facing the town centre. I would definitely stay there again under the condition to get a room not facing the main street.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Nice choice for a budget trip"

Clean and nice place, friendly staff. Tended to be a little noisy on Friday nights as it is a minute walk from Puerta-del-Sol and that' s a noisy place. There is a locker in every room, costs one euro to open\close it. I visited in february and the room was chilly, although an extra blanket is provided.

Great location, small but clean rooms, frendly owners.Near to all great places -Sol,Gran via,Plaza Mayor. All around are small places with great food.At the corner is Museo de jamon. You'll enjouy staying in it-walking distance to everything.
"Close To The Action"

Located on the second floor of an old building within 5 minutes walking of Sol station (for both Metro and RENFE light rail) and about 25 minutes of Atocha railway station. There is a large supermarket in El Cortes Ingles off Puerta del Sol within 5 minutes walking. All around are fast-food restaurants and more up-market eating establishments. Because it is close of the heart of Madrid, it is noisy at night. I had a smallish room with two single beds, table, two chairs, bedside table, mirror and large wardrobe. There was quite a small bathroom, with a half sized bath and a shower. Linoleum flooring in main room, tiles to bathroom and very clean. Better for one person than two, but OK for one night for two people. There was a very small lift available. Have to buzz using intercom for entry late at night, but it is open 24 hours. The room had air-conditioning, flat-screen tv and free wi-fi. Reception staff were friendly.
"Great value in a great central location"

Excellent choice if you are seeking value close to all the main attractions and easy to get to from airport or train station. Simple, but clean and good size room. 24 hr access. Museo de Jambon next door great for breakfast
"Great stay in the center of Madrid"

I stayed at hostal Esmeralda for one night on a Saturday and will definitely return if I'm ever in Madrid ! It it one small street away from Plaza del Sol which is the center of Madrid, so excellent location. It has Museo del Jamon right next to it which had very big and tasty sandwiches for just 1-2 euros. The hostal is in a building which hosts more hostals, each one on a floor. There's a big door with an intercom, a hallway and an elevator which takes you to the reception door at the 2nd floor. The lady at the reception was very nice, gave me tips about the city, helped me be in contact through the hostal's phone with a friend in Madrid who came to pick me up (we couldn't use our mobiles, long story). She spoke good English, i saw other reviewers complaining about this, maybe it was someone else. I got there at 10pm and wanted to go out a bit and explore the are, get something to eat and was worried about being able to get back into to room. It wasn't a problem, reception is open all night long, you just have to call on the intercom. The are is very lively until late at night but the noise didn't bother me. The room was clean, pretty large, confortable beds. It was a twin room with a balcony (i booked a single room, so i enjoyed the extra space). The bathroom was a bit cramped but ok. Free WiFi, good selection of tv channels. The price was excellent considering the location and the room, will go back there for sure. The only thing I'm disappointed about is they didn't have a free room the next week, when I booked another hotel and had a terrible experience. But that's another review. Hostal Esmeralda is a great choice.
"excelent location, nice staff"

The hotel has a very good location, few steps for metro Sol with 3 metro lines, lots of shops and restaurants. The room is very small, but clean and having all minimum utilities TV, phone, air conditioning. The staff is nice and try to help you, but don`t speak english, that is very bad. No hot weather during the weekend and I saw some insects/beetles in the bathroom last two days, there were room insects, not coming from outside. Very very noisy all night, can`t sleep at all, people talked loud until 7 in the morning. I will not return there, even the location is great and the staff is nice.
"Great location, clean rooms"

In the thick of things - on second floor (yeah slightly small, old elevator but I've been in worse and beats carrying bag up the stairs). Some slight language issues at check in but all good, room was very clean although small. Had tv and air-con (phew!). Great value overall! (especially considering it cost nearly as much per night to park our car nearby!)
"Very worth while"

Located in the heart of Madrid just where the action goes on 24/4. The entrance is scary as it also is the elevator but once you walk into it the place is impecable, clean and friendly staff. A very good place for the money. No complains and will return on my next stay in Madrid. If you drive a car there is no parking on the premises you would have to look for a public parking place.
"I Loved It"

Excellent value for money, and so central. I booked a single room and got a twin with a little balcony, and very spacious, room was sparse but very clean and the bathroom was spotless. I made use of the coffee machine in the reception and had it with a croissant or cake for breakfast. Location is excellent right on Sol and less than 5 min to Plaza Sant Ana, true the streets below were very noisy and busy, I woke on my first night at 5am ( a Saturday ) and there was still partying going on, I did use earplugs and after that I slept ok. I had two sets of balcony doors The staff very helpful and friendly and staff kept the place very clean, renovations were going on in the stairway, but there is a lift. Great tip : Museo del Jamon below, great for lunch and a beer, around 2.50 euros. I would certainly stay here again and got a good deal with Booking.com for 40 euro a night. No complaints at all ( apart from the Saturday noise )
"Clean, secure and central"
06/02/12 Kate B London, United Kingdom
Nice little place to stay. Very central just of Sol. I walked to all the major attractions. I booked a single and had a double bed in a small room with attached shower room - lots of hot water. Decor not flashy or particularly modern but this is one of the cleanest places i have ever stayed and it was cleaned everyday. Reception is staffed 24 hours and the door is kept locked so secure. On second floor with lift and stairs. Coffee machine in reception and cold drinks for sale. It is in an area with bars and restaurants on every corner so there is some noise from the street. However, with the double glazing i didn't lose any sleep. Good budget choice.
