"Great Hotel, Great Location"
After some tribulations finding the Memmo Alfama, everything was wonderful. We were welcomed with a tour of the hotel and escorted to our room. The room was very nice - clean and comfortable. There is a beautiful roof top terrrace where afternoon tappas and cocktails are available and where breakfast is served in the morning. The hotel does lean more […] toward adults - not necessarily the best place for families with small children. Location was perfect for people who like history and walking, but a bit off the beaten path if you want to be in the middle of everything. Only problem for our entire stay was that it was only two nights - wish we had been able to stay longer! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice hotel. Not ideal for business travel"
The hotel is nice. It has an amazing terrace with a nice view. Rooms are clean and the staff is friendly. The hotel is located in the old city which is the touristic area. Not ideal for business travel since most business districts are 20 to 30 minutes by taxi.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"A quiet gem in a beautiful neighborhood"
This was one of the best hotel experiences I have EVER had. I travel a lot for work in search of the perfect boutique hotel. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to make my stay perfect and easy. The hotel is simple and modern - very clean and the view of the river and Alfama is unbelievable. Alfama is the perfect […] neighborhood if you want old European beauty and quiet, but it is a short walk to the more bustling hip neighborhoods of Lisbon. One last thing...the breakfast every morning is delicious and you can eat it on the terrace. I would go back in a minute and secretly hope it doesn't get too popular or expensive.
"Great boutique hotel in Lisbon"
07/08/14 vatc5637 Virginia, USA
We stayed one night before embarking on our cruise. In hindsight, wish we had stayed in Lisbon a day or two longer. Although a bit challenging to find (we took public transportation, when you get off at Limiero on Tram 12, walk back up the hill, not down) the hotel itself was wonderful. The staff was very welcoming, the hotel charming and the neighborhood very interesting. The rooms was surprisingly large and the bed very comfortable, especially after a long flight in. Breakfast the following morning was very good. Will stay there again next time we visit Lisbon.
"Perfect hotel in a beautiful city"

My wife and I stayed here for three nights in early July 2014. From the moment we arrived the hotel lived up to all our expectations. A lovely warm welcome, stunning room (number 22 - highly recommended), delicious cocktails & surely one of the best roof top terraces (and pools) in any European city. Without fail, every member of staff was helpful, friendly & courteous & we highly recommend joining the free 60 minute walking tour of fascinating Alfama, which the hotel offers each day at 10am (after a delicious breakfast). If you want beautiful views, luxury & tip-top service in wonderful Lisbon, Memmo Alfama is ideal.
"A Luxe Boutique Hotel in the Old City"
07/02/14 MarcDavid Brooklyn, New York
This new(ish) boutique property is tucked away in an historic building on an initially hard-to-find side street in the old-city Alfama neighborhood of Lisbon (the first hotel to open in this historic neighborhood - with more to follow, no doubt). Once you find it, though, you will find that it's actually a great, convenient location for exploring the city and you will be very well taken care of by a helpful, knowledgeable front desk staff. We loved the combination of old (the building itself, the neighborhood) and new (the hushed, modern decor, the simple but elegant minimalist rooms, the indoor/outdoor wine bar terrace, the small dipping pool). Do check if your room has a view, as its worth waking up to a view over the old city and the river (we had an Alfama Superior room which did have these views). We didn't use the small pool, but we did spend time almost every evening having a cocktail or a glass of wine and some snacks on the outdoor terrace before heading out for dinner. And the breakfast - a self-serve buffet aside from eggs/omelettes which they will make to order - is lovely and fresh. If you're looking for a cool, luxe, modern, full-service boutique hotel, we highly recommend the Memmo Alfama.

I stayed at Memmo Alfama for 4 nights in June. I really can't fault this great boutique hotel. - Location Alfama is a great neighbourhood and a 5 to 10 minute walk to central Lisbon. It's quaint, quiet and away from the tourist traps. - Staff Extremely helpful, they were able to recommend great local restaurants and gave us a walking tour of the neighbourhood. - Accommodation Extremely stylish, quiet, and very clean. - Facilities There's a number of decks with sun-beds and lounges offering amazing views of Alfama and the river. The restaurant offers delicious local food. The menu is diverse and reasonably priced. Breakfast buffet (inclusive) offers a wide range of tasty options. - Good value We stayed in a Patio room which is the standard rate and didn't feel the need to upgrade at all. Would 100% book again.
"Stylish, homely gem"
06/29/14 Marcus P
My wife took me here for my 40th and it lived up to every expectation. It was boutique without being pretentious, relaxed without sparing the frills, as charming as any hotel I have stayed in and there are lots to compare with. The receptionists were wonderful, surprised me with champagne and cake, the terrace an oasis of calm and style, the living room like home from home. The room was small but perfectly formed with a beautiful free standing shower. The neighbourhood will capture your hearts forever, with a free walking tour a nice touch courtesy of the hotel. I would recommend this to anybody who needs a few days to unwind in understated luxury...just leave the kids at home. Thanks for a wonderful stay, Memmo Alfama. We will miss you.

My husband booked this hotel as a surprise. We turned up before check in time, but were offered a tour of the hotel and drink followed by somewhere to freshen up before we had a walk around the city. We were welcomed by a lovely man called Pedro who was so friendly and helpful. The roof top terrace was gorgeous, furnished with leather sofas, sun loungers and chairs. You can sit and eat breakfast on the terrace over looking the river and rooftops below. It was a fantastic location, quiet but only a 5 minute walk to the main square and 10 minutes to the castle...you can get the team from right outside though too if you don't fancy the walk. We had a terrace room which was lovely, the only slight issue was that the room itself was abit small and the walls quite thin. But modern decor and the big barroom and terrace over compensated. We thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Lisbon. They offer a FREE walking tour too which is well worth it to get your bearings and learn about the traditions area of alfama. Oh and it was the best continental breakfast I have had, cheeses, cereals, breads, ham, fruit, salmon, pastries, as well as being able to order hot food such as eggs, bacon, beans and pancakes.
"Out of the way but wonderful hotel"
06/15/14 skyerow Melbourne, Victoria
We stayed here for 4 nights in a Terrace Room. As others have said, no taxi driver knows where the hotel is, but knowing this in advance, I took a screen shot of google maps on my phone showing the hotel, (as no international wifi) and this helped. Upon arrival, we were shown around the hotel so we had our bearings and then were taken to our room, room 17. The room was small, but big enough, EXCEPT for a lack of storage. There was nowhere to store the suitcases, except standing up in the wardrobe, which means that you need to completely unpack everything as it is somewhat difficult to then access the suitcases, fine for a long stay, but would be annoying for a short stay. The bedside tables are funky but do not have a drawer, again making it difficult to store things. Likewise the bathroom. The room has a small safe, fine for travel documents, not big enough for a laptop. It has a small mini bar, but no iron or tea and coffee making facilities. The bed was very comfortable and the air con worked very well, which was great on a hot day. To note, the terrace rooms are lovely (the areas with the small concrete square and red chairs outside opening glass doors in the photos) as you can step straight outside to a seat, but they have limited views. Ours, room 17 had the best view as it was on the outside of the row, but the others face a wall. So while they are nice to open the doors and sit outside, if you want to relax with your drink over the AMAZING Alfama view, these won't get you that, and you will still need a table and chairs on the main outer hotel deck. Wifi was very good. Breakfast was lovely and quite quirky with little individual bottles of milk and juice. Freshly cooked items to order, including crepes, eggs, etc, as well as "continental" provisions in a buffet style. We had dinner here a couple of times and were very happy with the food, cost and service. The staff were lovely and we enjoyed the free 10am Alfama walking tour, although at 2 hours it ate into a lot of the day and could have been quicker. The only negative (other than storage space), is the location. The view can't be beaten, and we were there over the San Antonio festival and were not disturbed by the local festivities, but at the end of a long, hot day of walking, it is a bit of a hike up hill to the hotel, over the uneven Lisbon cobblestones, so you may want to consider taxis. It does add an extra 5-10 mins from downtown to reach the hotel. Would I stay here again? I think I would, it was lovely. Thanks
"Beware the Mansard Rooms!!"
06/13/14 Shaun J Leyland, United Kingdom
Don't be distracted by the photo's of the main hotel and the terrace, the description of the Mansard Rooms can confuse... 'The hotel's roof top hides the charming mansard rooms' - for MANSARD read attic rooms.' 'Different from all other rooms these very romantic Mansard rooms will make you forget you're in a hotel' - only if you want to look at a wall!! These rooms are at the top of the hotel, and unless you have some knowledge of buildings, they are actually attic rooms - the Memmo twist is that they have a wall within 30cm of the window, which means that unless you are well in excess of 6ft tall, you cannot see out of the room- it is like being in a bunker. Yes, you can see the sky, but on a sight seeing city visit, who just wants to just see the sky? All these Mansard rooms are the same, and some are really, really, really pokey, so pokey, you have to take turns in standing up. We tried to get moved, but were offered 2 things - 1. The same problem, but a bigger room at more cost - why?? And 2. The indifference and surly response of the hotel staff, because we dared to challenge - every time we passed the reception desk, they turned to each other and whispered, making us feeling really uncomfortable and unwelcome. Memmo, we were told, was about memories - so, no chance of forgetting this, and no chance of us returning. Now, Snr General Manager, tell us that we are factually incorrect and that your description of these rooms is honest and accurate. Simple honesty will really help potential guests being disappointed, and probably help them enjoy their stay, despite these practical deficiencies. If you are unsure, We have taken photo's to help you. All in all, the Memmo Alfama struggles to really come to terms with itself. Yes, there is Egyptian Linen, set in a lively part of Lisbon, but it is soulless, and no amount of 'boutique' can overcome these Mansard rooms. There are better hotels in Lisbon and at lower cost and better value; we know, because we stayed in them, and on this visit. Fortunately, in Alfama there is a new hotel under construction, so it may well help the Memmo come to terms with what it can really offer.
"The Setting and Views of this Hotel are Amazing!"
06/10/14 TravelGirl10520 Croton on Hudson, New York
Memmo Alfama is a very modern, contemporary hotel whose renovators skillfully retained aspects of the old structures to create a beautiful blend of old and new. My daughter and I arrived very early from our flight, but the front desk greeted us warmly, took our luggage and made sure we were oriented for a day of exploring. When the room was ready, the luggage had been placed in the room and we had been upgraded without requesting it. Room 33 was very spacious and looked out on the river on two sides. I loved that the (soundproofed) windows open for fresh air and a lovely breeze. The bathroom was very large, even by US standards, with a great rain shower, lots of counter space and fluffy towels. We found the beds to be perfect. For breakfast (a buffet), one has the option of eating in the dining room (modern, but with lots of wood and stone) or to walk up the steps to eat on the expansive deck, which is absolutely amazing. We ate a leisurely breakfast while looking down over the tile roofs of the Alfamma neighborhood and out to the river. The delicious and healthy buffet consisted of a variety of fruits, yogurts, cereals, breads, meats and cheese. There was a menu for hot foods, but we were more than satisfied with the buffet. Later in the day there is a small bar for a glass of wine, and it is a perfect place to relax and unwind. The location is an ideal point to explore Alfamma on foot, which allows one to wander through the windy streets and to poke around in the charming shops and restaurants. However, it is also very close to the Cathedral (Se) for the trams, buses and taxis. It's also a short walk to Commercio Square for the metro and a large tourist information office. As two women, we walked around Alfamma until late in the evening and never felt unsafe in any way. It is a great, historic area that appears to be experiencing gentrification. I only hope it doesn't change too much! The Memmo Alfamma also provides a complimentary group walking tour that one can sign up for, which I found very helpful (albeit a little long--the front desk said an hour, but the guide made it closer to two). This is a terrific hotel with a warm, accommodating staff. I highly recommend it and hope to return soon!
