We stopped in for a quick dinner while staying in the Cooper Landing area. Gwin's is easy to find with plenty of parking off the main road. The atmosphere is rustic and well worn... but after all this place is a legend...and we were in Alaska. When we were at the restaurant the drinks were flowing and the place was hoping with visiting fishermen having a good-ole-time. A bit noisy for my taste...but I guess that's what a lodge is like. The menu had burgers and typical bar grub and the prices were typical for Alaska in the summer...expensive. We had some "Macho Nacho's" ($13 something w/o meat)...they were pretty good and there was plenty to eat, add some drinks and tip and you'll drop $40-50 for 2 for some casual food.
"Great place to get away"

Nice cabin we stayed at- No TV or other distractions to deal with. You can go out and enjoy the wilderness. If you kids are hooked on electrical gadgets-stay away. The restaurant is great also. A person needs to take in the full experience in Gwinns.

Great place to stay, quaint little cottages. ( needs a little electrical updating ) very clean. Housekeeping staff awesome! Restaurant and food beyond fabulous. Great food, reasonable prices. John the cook outstanding!!! Rob in store terrific guy. Took a charter for salmon and caught nothing, resort refunded most of our money! You don't get that kind of service much anymore. Will highly recommend Gwins Lodge to all

Gwin's lodge is a great place, as long as you don't expect a 5 star resort. You are in Alaska and you are fishing, don't expect silk linens and a butler changing your sheets while you are sleeping, that is not why you are in Alaska. What you can expect is an excellent customer service if you have any questions or any needs. I understand that ours were minimal, but Rob took really great care of us. The convenience of being so close to the Russian River and the town of Cooper is second to none and the Cabins have all you need for you to cook a great meal inside, providing you buy the ingredients. Aside from a freezer looker room for your fish and a shop for your basic needs and fishing tackle ,you have a restaurant steps away from you that serves decent food even at closing time and everyone has a smile on their face. That to me is 5 star. Thank you Rob for being so accommodating to us when our plans changed because of our flight. Vic From Moab
"Perfect home base for a fishing trip"

My travel preferences in Alaska are different than anywhere else. I live here, and understand the challenges of providing creature comforts (running water, electricity, indoor plumbing, etc) in remote, beautiful areas. I go for the view and the experiences – fishing, horseback riding, photography, hiking, boating, etc. With family in town for a summer visit, we booked a fishing trip on the Kenai. Gwin’s lodge in Kenai was our destination for an overnight stay the night of the trout and salmon fishing opener in June. And although a view is always high on my priority list, I wasn’t willing to spend $500 a night for a view – we just wanted a nice affordable clean place to stay close to the boat launches. We were so fortunate to find Gwin;s Lodge! Gwin’s has been around a long time, and is located right on the road that runs through Cooper landing on the Kenai river. Rob was fantastic in accommodating us with two small cabins (versus the large “house” style accommodation that slept 8, that we originally booked). The large house is perfect for a group of guys who aren’t concerned with charm and details, and just came to fish. We wanted a little style, and Rob delivered. He switched us to two very charming little cabins with sleeping lofts and kitchens. They were bright, clean, and full of little extras like full size coffee maker, stocked kitchen with plates, dishes, glasses, etc, a ‘fridge, sink, and private bathroom with shower. (This is a real Alaska luxury in this price range). The beds were comfortable and clean, and the cabins were spotless. There are several styles of cabins – we stayed in identical cabins that had a double bed in its own rom, with a sleeping loft with two twin beds. They each had a dining table, couch and lounging area, a nice little porch, and easy access to a common area to BBQ. The lodge has a restaurant staffed by friendly summer help, serving classic Alaska “burgers and fries” type food and full breakfasts. The on-site fishing tackle store and guide service was top notch- staffed by knowledgeable locals with fishing gear that ranged from standard to high-end. We spent an hour or two talking with the staff and found them to be spot-on with their recommendations for gear and fishing hot spots. Gwins’ is conveniently located within 5 minutes from boat launching areas, horseback riding, and hiking. The Kenai Princess lodge is nearby if you want a more upscale dining experience and a wonderful view from the lobby. Based on this stay, we’ll definitely return to Gwins’ for more fishing adventures.
"Great for most of us"

Our family of 4 and grandma stayed in the one BR with loft cabin. Kids loved the loft and beds were comfortable (though not so much the pullout sleeper.). We rented waders and poles from the store and tried our luck on the Kenai and Russian Rivers. Friendly Staff was helpful in outfitting us and also worked to grant a few special requests. Food at restaurant excellent - great chowder and halibut/chips. Negatives- would have preferred being on the river instead of walking across the busy Sterling Hwy to the Kenai. Would have preferred for our cabin's porch to face the central clearing instead of the fishing outfitter next door. Grandma did not enjoy the experience as much as we did- too rustic for her! Would recommend you bring any special kitchen supplies and ingredients (spices) as there is very limited shopping in the area and, as expected, kitchen has the basics. Overall a pleasant experience in a beautiful setting!

We stayed in cabin #2 (2 adults, 3 kids). We were happy with the cabin- very conveniently located near the Russian River and lots of great hiking. The property has a store and good restaurant which was reasonably priced (for Alaska)- we enjoyed it so much we ate both evenings at Gwin's. We especially liked the fried halibut platter- service was good and they brought our food quickly. The teens liked the loft part of the cabin, but it can get a little warm up there; fortunately Gwin's thought of that and provided a fan as well. My only suggestion would be a shade over the kitchen window to block out the daylight.

3 adults shared the aspen cabin. We were pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. It looked like the bedding was brand new. The cabin was very clean and the bathroom was very nice. Beds were comfortable and the pull out sofa was decent. No tv but we were too tired from the days activities to care.
"Very comfy bed."

We stopped here late and were tired the room was clean and comfortable but if i stay somewhere for more than one night i need a TV to sit down and watch at the end of the day. We like the little store and we enjoyed the food for breakfast. The only thing is that it took over an hour to get it and i know they were working on it cause i could see them but when you make everything to order it might be a good idea to have more than one person in the kitchen.

We stayed here after travelling on the ferry from Valdez before driving to Homer. The cabin had everything we needed and was clean and everything worked very well. We had cabin number 5 which looked older than most of the others and it was dark inside. (It was a very dull day). Whether you stay here or are just passing through, Gwins Lodge restauant is a must. It has a lively atmosphere and serves good food.
