"reasonable price for great service!"
This hotel met our needs for a place to stay while visiting for the weekend. The building is really nice; the room is nothing fancy, but definitely clean, warm, and comfortable. The staff is really nice and helpful. Being at the edge of Chinatown, the area is a tad rough, but I did not feel like I was in danger. If I was traveling alone, I may have […] been apprehensive about going out into the street by myself. I am excited to see the upcoming changes at this hotel; at the time of our visit, the rooms were not yet themed/decorated by artists. I plan to come back and stay here again! Not in the best location, just make sure to head west and not east for activities outside the hotel. Rooms were clean but contrary to the description some rooms do not have balconies. Make sure to ask for one if you really want it. Couldn't beat the price for a last minute trip over New Years and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I would stay […] here again. "Clean rooms, close to SkyTrain"
The hotel in general was clean. The rooms reminded me of a fancier hostel, however it had everything you needed. It was fairly close to the SkyTrain and Gastown. However since its right by Chinatown, I would be very aware of your surroundings, but since it was close to Gastown, there is a lot of people out and about later at night, so we felt pretty […] safe. I do recommend that you find your own directions. The hotel staff was not very informative and gave us wrong train directions. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great if you're not doing anything but sleeping."
First of all, we couldn't even find the place, because the entrance to the hotel is through this little hole-in-the-wall gallery. When I called for directions, the person I spoke to on the phone assured me I was on the wrong side of Pender, even though I wasn't. Then, when we finally got to the hotel & checked in at the desk, the person there tried […] to charge me the entire amount of our stay - including the $250+ that was pre-paid through Hotels.com. (Also, parking is extra.) When we finally got to our room, we found that it was super small & very bare-bones. The bed has just a regular metal frame, the TV is a giant tube set that hums loudly when you turn it on, & the windows & balcony were unusable because they looked directly into other people's residences. Housekeeping was awkward the next morning, as they don't give you "do not disturb" signs to put out, so I had two people try to come into the room while I was getting dressed, & had to yell at them through the door that we were fine & didn't need our bed made. With that said, the room, though small, was clean, & was fine for just sleeping. If you're planning to be out & about in downtown the whole time you stay here, I think this place is probably fine. But if you plan to spend any amount of time in your room, I don't recommend this place. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Needed a 1 night stay in Vancouver before off on our next leg. Chose this hotel because of location. It is close to the railway station and China Town. Hotel was clean, spacious rooms, quiet and convenient.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I really enjoyed our stay at Skwachàys. While not a full service hotel, it had all of the amenities I needed and was within walking distance of everything we did in Vancouver. "Good new hotel."
We were staying just one night between train trips and looking for a relatively inexpensive hotel from which we could explore Vancouver. This one worked just fine for that. We also liked the fact that some of the income from the hotel goes to help indigenous populations. Advantages of this hotel include low cost, walking distance from the train station, […] and its position right on a bus line to get to downtown Vancouver and Stanley Park. It is also just at the edge of Chinatown and an easy walk to Gastown. The rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable, and the shower was hot. Best of all was that the lobby was filled with high quality aboriginal art for sale. The downside was a portable window air conditioner that was noisy and not very effective. Also, there were no staff available during the night. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The hotel was close to a lot of tourist destinations (2 or 3 blocks to Gastown, 5-10 min walk from Downtown, 2 doors down from Chinatown, 10 min walk from waterfront & seabus, short bus (#19) ride from Stanley Park), but the block that it is located on was a little sketchy. There were some bums outside of the hotel, however during our 4 night stay no […] one ever approached us or bothered us in any way. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms are new and clean. The amenities are minimal. Our room (two bed standard) had 2 twin beds, a night stand, armoire w/TV, walk in closet, shower w/out tub, fridge, coffee maker, and a set of cabinets in the small kitchenette. We were able to call the front desk and borrow a hair dryer and iron for the duration of our stay. Overall- As long as you don't mind walking through one block of sketchiness on the way home from an evening out, this hotel is a steal for the price. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Our stay at the hotel was overall comfortable, and the place was a lot like an apartment complex. The beds and bathroom were clean and place seemed like new. The surrounding neighborhood was ok. The only big downside was the parking. We were not informed or aware that there was no free parking and needed to reserve a space. Luckily we only stayed for […] one night, but we ran into quite some trouble with parking accommodations. Make sure to call the hotel beforehand to let them know you need to pay for a space. "Clean Excellent staff"
Close to china town and supermarket, a few beggars and homeless about but no real botherGenuine Expedia guest review
Me and my boyfriend stayed at the Skwachàys Lodge for a canucks game recently. The hotel is in a super central location, and I don't think you could get closer to the stadium! I will admit I was a bit apprehensive about the neighbourhood based on other reviews, but didn't find that to be an issue at all! Perhaps if you were coming home by yourself from […] the bar at 2am... but then that is an issue in most cities? Staff were super friendly, and our place was clean and quiet (facing the courtyard, 6th floor). Plus, the staff mentioned they are doing renovations soon and each room will be decorated by a different artist- cool! All in all, it's a pretty basic place, but it's nicely put together, clean and in a super prime location, plus you can't beat the price! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
An amazingly good deal soooo close to Rogers Arena. Not fancy, but can't possibly beat the price, and there's nothing more I could have wanted for spending the night after a hockey game.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This hotel looked great in the pictures, however in real life is a very different story. Their claim that they are a short walk to Rogers arena is also false. When I arrived at the hotel, there was no where to park the car to check in, there were homeless people everywhere, and litter and garbage covering the street. As I pulled over to check that I […] had the right address, homeless people came up and started banging on my car windows. I called the hotel to see if the address was wrong and there was no answer, no call service, no answering service, nothing... I drove away to another (safer) road, and called three more times, no answer at all. I proceeded to drive by again, hoping that I had the wrong address, but alas no. I ended up booking at another hotel in a safer neighbourhood. As there is no answering of the phone, I was not able to cancel my reservation, or receive a refund. Very simple hotel with very helpful staff. Clean, beds are comfortable, mini fridge. Limited underground parking (6 spots). Not all rooms have balconies and they are non-smoking. "Really wanted to like it...."
10/15/13 retrac5 San Diego, CA
We really wanted to like this hotel, but ultimately it came up short for a lot of reasons. The room itself was pretty spartan, but the bed was comfortable and both the room and the bathroom were clean The staff was very, very friendly. The aboriginal art is very interesting and worth taking some time to browse - maybe purchase if it fits your style. Those are the good things. Location - not horrible, but I wouldn't stay here again. Far down West Pender - our room was on the back of the hotel facing Hastings. There was a club on Hastings that was easily seen and heard. The club, 'Funky', was quite loud with loud revelers very late into Saturday night/Sunday morning. There is an alley directly behind the hotel. The alley is the access to the reservations only car garage. I would not feel safe in that alley late at night - or in the garage for that matter. Room, others described their room as spacious, I wouldn't call it spacious, unless you are comparing it to some Paris shoebox hotels. Our room wasn't small, but it certainly wouldn't have been described as spacious. And one feature that is probably not important to everyone, the TV only received one channel. We had one towel in the bathroom. One bath towel. No hand towels, no bath matt, no washcloths. Could we have gotten them? I don't know, the office was closed when we returned early evening (at 8PM). Additionally one of the windows could not be closed at all as it served as the fresh air source for the portable air conditioning/heating unit. Not only couldn't it be closed, there was no way to shutter it. It served as an unwelcome source of noise and light. Food - As mentioned, food options are rather limited in the neighborhood. There is a McDonalds, a 7/11 and a Tim Horton on the block, and a public house and another restaurant are within two blocks - but all of the good restaurants are a bit of a walk - either toward Water Street, or on Robson, or further. We love walking - so it wasn't an issue - but when we had a few hunger pangs at 8:30PM, the options were pretty limited. Parking - metered on the street (pretty expensive) and a parking garage - $15.00 reserved + a $35.00 refundable deposit for a key fob. The neighborhood has its share of street folks - but as others have said, they were not aggressive at all. We were told by the clerk at the front desk however, that we should avoid Hastings when walking. It certainly did not feel carefree - but neither did it feel dangerous. I hope the area improves and the hotel and resident artists survive and thrive. If you are adventurous and used to spartan downtown hotels in less that optimal neighborhoods, you should consider supporting this hotel and its resident artists by staying a night or two.

Stayed on September 7 for one night with my partner (room 508). This place is not the Fairmont or Westin, nor does it try to be. It is a small, First Nations-oriented "lodge" that provides secure, clean, and comfortable short-term accommodations for a very reasonable price. The staff are trying VERY hard to make it a rewarding experience for guests, and it is one of the best values in an otherwise expensive city. The Lodge is located in what has long been a "sketchy" part of town, but what is now quickly becoming a very urban, active, and entertainment-oriented part of the downtown core (we were a five minute walk from our "Eagles" concert at Rogers Arena). There are numerous interesting bars and restaurants in the immediate area, and we did not feel unsafe walking the neighbourhood (although there are a lot of "interesting characters" on the streets - think of the "Tenderloin District" of San Francisco, without the threat of violence). The security is good (pass cards for the parking garage, the after-hours entrance, and the elevator). The room was basic, quiet, and very clean. There was a balcony large enough to sit on, and there was not a lot of traffic noise (we looked over Pender Street). The bed was very soft. The bathroom was average sized with the usual amenities, but no issues with water pressure or temperature. There was television and wi-fi included, with a comfortable work station. The room lighting could use some improvement, and the air conditioning unit looked like something from the space shuttle (possibly louder than the space shuttle..) but we turned it off (on a very warm night) and just left our balcony door open a crack and we were fine. This property is certainly not trying to compete with a larger hotel, but is far more fun than a "brand X" budget chain-motel. There is an adequately stocked common kitchen on the main floor, and interesting native art throughout the lobby area (they were even preparing for an upcoming showing). If you want a break from the larger hotels, if you are open-minded and want something interesting for a night, and if you are trying to save money on accommodations in Vancouver then this place is worth considering.

I stayed at this hotel for the first time. Recently opened and very modern. Rooms are well appointed and spacious. Service is personal and attentive. The feel of the place is very positive. Obviously the location is convenient, but not far from a dicey part of town. That said, the whole area is gentrifying and the area's poor reputation is overstated. I felt secure throughout my stay. I will make this hotel a key part of my future travel plans to Vancouver.
"Not at all what I expected."

This is the last time I book a hotel without READING the reviews first. (I normally just look at the overall ratings, which DID NOT prepare me for this place.) First of all, we couldn't even find the place, because the entrance to the hotel is through this little hole-in-the-wall gallery. When I called for directions, the person I spoke to on the phone assured me I was on the wrong side of Pender (E. Pender vs. W. Pender), even though I wasn't. Then, when we finally got to the hotel and checked in at the desk, the person there tried to charge me the entire amount of our stay - including the $250+ that was pre-paid through http://Hotels.com. (Also, parking is extra, and their lot is super limited so be prepared for that.) When we finally got to our room, we found that it was super small and very bare-bones. The bed has just a regular metal frame, the TV is a giant tube set that hums loudly when you turn it on, and the windows and balcony were unusable because they looked directly into other people's residences (all of which were within 30 feet of us). Housekeeping was awkward the next morning, as they don't give you "do not disturb" signs to put out, so I had not one, but two people try to come into the room while I was getting dressed, and had to yell at them through the door that we were fine and didn't need our bed made. With that said, the room, though small, was clean, and was fine for just sleeping. If you're planning to be out and about in downtown the whole time you stay here, I think this place is probably fine. But if you plan to spend any amount of time in your room (which we expected to do at least a bit of, since this was our anniversary weekend), I don't recommend this place.
"Support the first nations"

Here is location no. 6 around the latest biz trip for Canada. Arrived in style by Tofino Air at Vancouver Harbour airport downtown, a nice older guy working at the parking garage called us a cab what arrived within a minute and onwards for the hotel. The driver had no idea about it, but with the street shown on the map we arrived not that long thereafter. A nice welcome from an aboriginal young woman and also an old guy taking care of the first nations art gallery. Top floor was requested and prepared, facing the rear side of the building, no noise beside some talking on one of the balconys. The room spacious, Ikea style furniture, sure ok for us and Wifi worked well. Well the location is really good from the first view, Gastown just a couple of blocks away, Canada Place in walking distance, Chinatown beside, but on the other hand side be prepared for Downtown Eastside with all it´s alcohol and drug addicted people not that far away. Everything ok for us in the end also in the evening. No restaurant on offer, Tim Hortons around the corner saved us breakfast. Downsides?. Well housekeeping needs some improvement. Not that nice when you step really wet out of the shower only to notice that there is no hairdryer around and while you´re desperate search you notice further some used old towels in one drawer and also there are plenty of plastic bags stored in another drawer. Who knows why?.
"Great hotel but be aware of the drop in centre for the homeless next door"

We wanted a hotel as close as possible to Gastown and decided to plump for this one. Initially we were pleased with the rooms when we arrived with our own parking space in a secure garage, we immediately noticed quite a few beggers, tramps and drug takers hanging around. Our children did not feel comfortable and neither did we, especially in the evening. We thought the hotel would provide breakfast only to be informed they stopped doing it although there are plenty of cafes nearby. We did enjoy Vancouver, so much to do. Not a cheap place to visit but definetely worthwhile.

Downtown Vancouver is not as big as we thought and this hotel was in walking distance to everything that we wanted to see...Gastown, Canada Place, Stanley Park (we stopped for lunch on the way), Science Center, Waterbus to Granville Island, Casino, and Chinatown. Room had the essentials...free wifi, mini fridge, TV/cable (didn't use), and comfy bed. Very secure building and separate secure parking garage. There is a medical clinic a couple of doors down from this hotel. They people look a little shabby but none of them gave us any issues and said anything to us. The transients that you will see periodically were very under the radar. Not at all aggressive like I've seen in other downtown cities in the US.

The hotel is on a great location for visiting Downtown; on walking distance to Gastown, BC Arena, Robson Street/Square, Chinatown. Although, there are lots of homeless people in area, which does not feel very safe, specially at night. Rooms are average; not too spacious, but clean. Staff is friendly. Wi-Fi worked properly. Good value for price.

Go beyond the faceless, nameless, eversame sad hotel rooms you find in every city. This Lodge is in for personal, caring service. It runs on great staff, encouraged people and on a project that is worth supporting. Our room was perfect, huge actually, clean, with comfortable beds. The Cafe provided in the rooms was actually one of the best I drank on our whole 3-week-Trip. We enjoyed our stay and would surely recommend it to everyone going to Vancouver. So, yes, the neighbourhood seems to be a bit rougher. We were adviced to leave out certain parts at night which we didn't come across anyways. But as a matter of fact we didn`t fell threatened or insecure at any time. We really liked the place and if we come across Vancouver again - this would be it. Only one thing we missed - some chairs on our balcony! ;-)
