"scared off monkeys"
we were both sick & were only able to go to breakfast in the mornings to look for the monkeys that usually showed up at their dining area in the mornings . the monkeys must have heard me coughing all night long & I guess they did not want what I had the monkeys never showed up . the food was the best we had in the 14 days we were in Costa Rica .Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Absolutely Loved It."
Paige and John are the new owners of the hotel as of December and were the most generous and helpful couple that we met on our trip. They helped us with everything from booking reservations to showing us around the area. The hotel is in a great location, just a five minute bus ride from Manuel Antonio and less to Quepos. The rooms are pretty basic but […] great for the price, and the rest of the staff is very friendly. I don't think we would have been happier staying in a five star hotel. "Okay but not impressed"
The hotel receptionists are not very friendly. They always seemed bothered when I asked questions. The bar/ restaurant guys and the night security guy were super-nice and helpful. The wifi connection was very poor. The hotel is on the route between Quepos and Manuel Antonio, conveniently located (rides on the bus are about 50 cents a person, they give […] you change when you pay on the bus). The area is touristy and very expensive, we went to the beach in Manuel Antonio and to dinner in Quepos (at local establishments, called "Soda"s) so the bus was very convenient (it arrives every 20-30 minutes on a precise schedule). The pool at the hotel was okay but for the pool on our side of the building the lights were broken so at night the area was dark. Which is romantic except it attracted bats and cockroaches. The rooms were okay (A/C but otherwise not impressive, I wish we had a small fridge in the room). The bathrooms were clean and the cleaning lady (Bianca, I believe) was great! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

The hotel was nice. The area is older and you can tell by the hotels and restaurant. The hotel could use a few updates but it was clean and comfortable. Staff was friendly and I was able to use colones and dollars with out a problem.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Blue Monkey- Bad? No need for a spanking here"
The Blue Monkey is a nice place to stay for the money, you must understand if you are paying a discounted price you should NOT expect Los Suenos or Riu Palace. We live in both the United States and in Costa Rica. The hotel is nice, the staff is average and the location is ok- its closer to Quepos than Manuel Antonio. We were looking for an inexpensive […] location for a nice weekend at the beach- this is the best fit. We had a great time here at the hotel, and everything worked. To the traveler considering this hotel- request a room across the street from the main lobby, we stayed in room 1A with a Kitchen. (I think the rooms were 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A & 3B) This area of the hotel has its own private gated entrance and private pool for maybe 6 rooms- in essence we had our own private pool at night. We were quiet and were in the pool after midnight- no one noticed. There was no additional cost for rooms on this side. Setting expectations is key- based on our criteria we would stay at this hotel for a weekend in the future. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The staff here were amazingly friendly and helpful. The rooms were kept clean. It was unfortunate that the breakfast was not included as it was pricy for what it was. It was very easy to catch a bus to either Manuel Antonio or Quepos as nothing was really within walking distance.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice, quiet hotel!"
This hotel was wonderful, we had our own little villa that included a kitchen which really saved us some money! It was tucked into the jungle a bit so we had great privacy! A little bit far from Manuel Antonio but with cheap taxis all was good!Genuine Expedia guest review
we paid for a hotel 4 stars on the internet and found ourself in a low old hotel in no were between emanuel antonio and capos, withe eclectic fournitures, breakfeast not included, low management and a staff that cannot change the situation, a kind of "delaisser".Genuine Expedia guest review
Rooms are not well maintained, air conditioners are ancient and so loud you can't sleep with them on, a giant cockroach crawled into bed with me as soon as I turned the lights off - not worth the $50 price tag at all. The one good thing is that it's located between Quepos town and Manuel Antonio Park.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Musty and damp during the rainy season"
The hotel was right off the main road leading to Manuel Antonio National Park. We went during the rainy season and the room was musty and felt damp. Everyone was friendly and the service was good, its just an older hotel with an old smell to it. Breakfast is not included and the wi-fi was so weak we never were able to get connected, even in the lobby. […] It was close enough to the park, but if we were to go again, we would pick a hotel within walking distance of the park entrance so we wont have to pay for parking to enter the park. "Great Stay while Supporting a Good Cause"
We had a great stay at Mono Azul. The hotel is big with 3 pools. Rooms are very spacious, clean, and the location of the hotel is right beside the bus stop on the main road between Quespos and Manuel Antonio. It is very easy to get to the national park and town (it comes often the bus very early and late into the night). The hotel service was helpful […] and very friendly. One of my favourite parts of Mono Azul is that it supports an organization called Kids Saving the Rain Forest and a portion of the costs of the accommodation goes towards a good cause.

Personale educato. "Economical Hotel Close To The Park"
01/26/15 Jim T Guelph, Canada
This hotel is under new ownership. John and Paige were friendly and welcoming and working hard to bring the Mono Azul up to their desired standards. Juan Carlos at the front desk was very friendly and keen to assist travellers in any way possible. He booked great tours for us in the area. There was plentiful wildlife in the immediate area including troops of squirrel monkeys passing through each evening at about 5:30, several macaws and a sloth, all pointed out by John. Rooms were basic but adequate and comfortable. The bathroom was clean, including the shower. There was a little porch (sitting area) immediately outside the room in a garden setting. WIFI was quick and available both in the room and in the lobby. Water, coffee and tea were available (free) all day. Air conditioning was available in our unit. There are two pools which were clean and welcoming. One is in a shaded jungle setting and is cool in temperature. The other is directly in the sun and is much warmer. Take your choice. There is a room with board games for guests. Bus stops are very close by with buses every 25 minutes into Manuel Antonio or Quepos This is a quiet and relatively inexpensive hotel and we were very comfortable.
"Clean, Friendly, Helpful"

This is such a great stopping place for a visit to Manuel Antonio Park. There are two pools and one of them I couldn't get my daughter out of it was such a great spot. The other pool was quieter and had plenty of shady spots to sit. The chef in the restaurant was amazing, using locally sourced fresh food and, even with his limited English and my limited Spanish, was able to modify the food to my strict dietary needs with a smile. I especially recommend the delicious breakfast! One of the owners walked around making sure everyone was happy and offering tips on getting to town, etc. Just don't be in a rush in any of the restaurants in the area. Remember, you are on vacation so it is no big deal to take an hour for breakfast...The bar was a fun spot for watching the Patriots/ Packers playoff game with a full bar selection for me and bottled soda and exotic juice for my young, non-drinker. Ask about the various tours at the front desk and the friendly staff can help you set up something. We were able to get a private tour of the park with a guide that was much more exciting than what we would have seen on our own. Also, we went on a great tour to rappel down a waterfall and zip-line (I will review that as well) which we wouldn't have chosen without the help of Paige & John, the owners. We saw as much wildlife at Hotel Mono Azul as we did at the park, thanks to John who showed us toucans, a sloth, monkeys, and various tiny creatures we wouldn't have even known were there if he didn't point them out. There were obvious improvements underway while I was there with painting going on and serious cleaning. I hope I can go back soon and see the newest changes. When the sad time came for us to leave, Paige made our bus reservations to get us to San Jose which picked us up right at the hotel and even called to confirm our hotel near the airport. Really above and beyond from everyone there. I highly recommend them.
"this is why they hate Americans"
01/22/15 the_hedon Waupun, Wisconsin
One young local man ran around doing everything, trying his best to please everyone who needed him. When I realized that he was waiting on the owners and investors who walked around like they were some sort of big shots, and the rest of us, paying customers, should be fine waiting a half hour looking at menus before anyone could tell us the "restaurant" wasn't open for another hour..OMG. I wanted to scream. After we ate our crappy food one of the owners, John, asked appropriately if the food was edible. Clearly he knew it sucked. The owners and big shot investors (elderly ladies walking around blowing e-cig smoke all over the place) ignored all of the paying customers as if we were invisible. I even witnessed the owner walk right by two people waiting at reception to check in without so much as acknowledging them. The room was ridiculously neglected. We decided to stay the first night since we had already checked in and were tired...the next morning we walked for a half hour, found a paradise-like place for only $20 more a night and included a full, wonderful breakfast and staff that gave a crap. Hotel California is a walk away and is amazing. You still have time. Get out while you can. These guys are what give Americans a bad name. Oh yeah, wifi? What a joke. There wasn't even wi-fi in the lobby much less the rooms. Their excuse for no wifi was that it had rained that day...the toilet tank cover was missing and replaced with a piece of wood that must have been grabbed from a scrap pile. The only one there who will care about you is the kid working the front desk. Poor kid.
"Pura Vida at Hotel Mono Azul"
01/19/15 dirtybird88 Mesa, Arizona
My experience of Hotel Mono Azul was wonderful and was the perfect place to stay while visiting Quepos/Manuel Antonio. The location was quite ideal, right next to the bus stop. It was very accessible to both Manuel Antonio National park, and the city of Quepos; about a five minute ride each direction. The hotel itself was very nice, clean, nice accommodations, had air conditioned rooms as an option (which was a luxury on hot afternoons), and decently priced. They also had two pools to choose from, made it very enjoyable after a long day of adventures to relax by one of the pools and watch the local wildlife go by. The staff did an amazing job! The new owners, who are very friendly and down to earth, were more than helpful with any request, and especially helpful planning our tours. If they were unsure about something, they took the initiative to find it out for us, which made our stay in Quepos pretty easy, and carefree. They had a little bar with smoothies for children, plenty of "adult beverages", and complimentary tea and (strong) coffee on tap 24/7. The food was delicious and had a variety of typical "Tico" cuisine as well as a few specials from their very experienced chef, and was very reasonably priced. My stay at Mono Azul was a very pleasant one, it was the perfect setting for the start of our Costa Rica adventure. If you are looking for a Best Western, there is one in Quepos, right next to the Subway... If you're looking for a genuine Pura Vida experience, I'd suggest staying at Hotel Mono Azul

Stayed with my wife (we're a young couple) for two nights, we got a room far from the reception which was ok, quite except for the fan an the rain dropping o the roof! The bed was ok, however the place needs refurbishment! Overall I would say it's a decent place for a couple of nights and if you're traveling on a budget.
"Friendly Family atmosphere"

We are a family of four on a tour to Manuel Antonio this Christmas. We stayed in this hotel and had a very positive experience. The rooms were clean and the staff was very friendly. The new owners and the staff really helped us out in planning/booking our tours. They provided guidance for local travel and attractions. On the last day of our checkout, after a full day on the beach, we were to depart for San Jose. They gave us a room for a short duration for my family to shower and freshen up. In addition, when I found out that my Spirit Airlines flight is cancelled, They provided us with lot of support in rebooking on other airline, getting refund from Spirit and in finding a hotel in San Jose. The new owners and the staff were extremely helpful and I will definitely go back again to Mono Azul
"Friendly and convenient home base in Quepos"
01/02/15 pbenveni Evanston, Illinois
Hotel Mono Azul came under new ownership in December 2014. The American husband-wife-brother-in-law owner/managers are hands-on and eager to make their clients comfortable. Our group enjoyed clean and comfortable rooms near the lovely "warm" pool with fountain adjacent to the sitting area and dining room. Breakfast not included in rates but free coffee and tea available and reports of an excellent chef on Christmas vacation. Monkeys drop coconuts and a mama sloth and baby hang out - literally- in property trees. Bus to Manuel Antonio National Park, 10 minutes away, passes by the hotel and the return bus takes you to downtown Quepos 5 minutes away. I would happily go back and see the many improvements the new owners plan.
"Amazing folks work here!"

This was our second stay at Mono Azul! A friend/former tour guide recommended it and we loved it on our first stay back in July. We had a two bed room with no air conditioning (most economical). Pool was lovely! Breakfast was not included, but was reasonable and decent. Since July, the hotel was closed for a couple of months while it was sold and in transition. We arrived during the first week of the new owners'. First, the same folks work there and we were so glad because they are truly what make this place special for us! Incredibly helpful, friendly and knowledgeable! Every recommendation for activities was right on the mark! Second, the new owners are nothing, but nice, nice, nice and amazing with my daughter. They took the time to show her the wildlife on the property which she loved. Third, the food was better than I remember -- so either they're doing something new or were were hungrier this time:-) The facilities were clean, we were provided with clean towels for the beach and for our room regularly and our room was de-shaded every day which could not have been easy. In the next year, I do hope the facilities get updated somewhat. For what you pay, it is perfect. I did not smell/see any black mold in or outside our room, but perhaps because we are not particularly sensitive to it. But there is great potential for upgrading.
"DANGER!!! BLACK MOLD!!!"
11/24/14 Keelan G
Arrived at the hotel after booking online. We were very clear about out later arrival and were surprised to find no reception. We were told that we couldn't stay there that night by the security guard. After the guard made a phone call for us he was able to give us our room keys. And from there it goes downhill. The room was so mouldy our noses and throats burned. It was terrible. We gathered up our things almost immediately, but not soon enough as the horrible air quality activated my wife's asthma. On the upside, there was no argument when we went there the next day to cancel our reservation.
