"Loved Casa Carmen but the district ...."
We stayed in each of the 3 districts of the old walled city of Cartagena. We found Casa Carmen online and booked through Expedia. Loved the guesthouse--though if you don't speak at least a little Spanish you may be up a creek--but the district it's in is a true barrio and therefore pretty rough. Our street was nice and quiet with homes and shops but utter mayhem off our block. Barrio Getsemani, where Casa Carmen is located, is interesting and full of life, but maybe not for the faint hearted.

"Nice, B&B style hotel near walled city"
Hotel is just outside of the walled city, in an area that caters to international hostelers, meaning it's safe and nice, but not high end or boring. The famous clocktower is about a 10 minute walk, lined with restaurants, and tours are easy to get at the entrance to the city. The rooms are basic but nice, and the service is great. Breakfast is eggs, fruit, bread, and coffee served by a very nice staff, and they can arrange ground transport as well.

"If you're fond of sleeping... don't come here..."
The hotel itself is good enough... the problem comes with its neighbors... We came at night really tired form a long trip with the only intention of sleeping. The house across the street had a stereo at full volume... The hotel staff didn't care to do anything about it... We ended up not sleeping a bit... So... as said above... if you're fond of sleeping... look for another hotel, for your own resting sake...

"Excellent lower cost option"
Avoiding the high prices of boutique hotels in the Centro area, Casa Carmen offered a nice, clean, comfortable lower-cost experience. We stayed 6 nights, so it was great that the hotel gave us a quad room despite booking a double (at double's rate); there was space to spread out and be comfortable. The Getsemani neighborhood was a pleasure- lots of local life, plus shops for drinks and snacks and the great Plaza Trinidad nearby, and a short walk to clock tower. The A/C worked excellently which is very needed in Cartagena. There was no hot water, and I love a hot shower, but if I can survive it, anyone can! Breakfasts were nice, with Colombian coffee, juice, fruit, eggs and a starch (the days with arepas were a favorite!). Breakfast can take awhile if all the guests turn up at once, since it's one person cooking fresh and serving, but we were never in a rush so it didn't matter to us. The desk was staffed 24hrs, laundry service was reasonable, and Christian spoke English which was a huge plus given my poor Spanish.

Wonderful location, wonderful property, with a wonderful charm and staff working there. Just FYI, there is no hot water if you are the kind of person who requires hot showers. That said, Cartagena is a very hot and humid place anyway.

"Nice rooms, courtyard and rooftop patio"
I think I may have got the best room, upstairs at the back, with two doubles and a single, raked timber ceilings and shuttered windows. The only downside was some noisy fellow guests. The lady who checked me in was friendly, spoke English helpfully well and gave me good pointers regarding restaurants and shopping. Breakfast was good- fruit, eggs, corn bread, fetta-type cheese, juice and coffee.

"Decent value"
A well located, small hotel with larger rooms and a good breakfast. Our first room, very large, was slated for renovation, but it was the only one ready, so we had it for one night. There was a dank odour that became apparent, which may explain why it needs renovating. We were swtiched to an equally larger room that was fine. Staff and service was very friendly and courteous. Quite good value for Cartagena.

"A cozy stay"
All in all a gray stay! The rooms were cozy and clean. Maria, the receptionist, was delightful. There was a weird mix-up with our laundry that reduced our rating. One of the staff were supposed to deliver our laundry for cleaning. We tried to get it back and we got a bunch of excuses in return and no address for pick-up. We discussed this back and forth and it turned out it was lying behind the counter, still unwashed. We got it back as we had to go early the next day

Cozy and gorgeous small hotel with wonderful staff. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, and come with AC and satellite TV. Simple but good breakfast served in the morning. The location is great: 5 minutes from the Clock Gate. The vicinity is the best nightlife area in Cartagena. Totally recommended!

"OK hotel, bad management"
02/21/16 Túlio L
First, I have to tell the problems with the reservation: I booked with hotel casa Carmen 4 months ago and when I arrived, I was surprised by the receptionist that said she waited for as long as she could for us, but then was forced to give our room to another family for 2 days. According to her, it was Booking's fault, but it seemed to us that she didn't believe we would come and then gave the room to someone else to occupy. The solution was that they allocated us in another nearby hotel with same standards, according to them, but even though we booked to have a double bed and two singles, we had a double, a single and a mattress on the floor of a very mouldy room. After two days we came back to Casa Carmen for our original stay and had no major problems, but they didn't give us any discount and said that they were not in debt with us. After discussing a lot, all we got was a free rice back to the airport when we checked out. I reached out to Booking by email on the first day and it took 3 days for them to answer me, with a bland response, apologising and saying they would cover for any additional costs. ---- About the hotel itself: Pretty good location, close to many restaurants and within walkable distance of many attractions. The neighbourhood seems to be the new thing in Cartagena and appears to be improving. The hotel is very simple, we stayed in a room for 4 persons, which was divided into three smaller rooms: a bathroom, a room with two single beds and another with the double one. There is an air conditioner on each of the bedrooms, installed at the very top of the wall and one was dripping. The bathroom is spacious and ok, but the shower doesn't have enough lighting and might be darker than most would expect. All the rooms are facing one of three audio disturbances: the upper ones face the neighbouring hostel social area, which might get loud. The lower ones either face the busy Street or the reception and breakfast area. We weren't very disturbed by the noise, but I can see it being a major problem. The wifi was OK, disappearing at times, but overall faster than your average hotel/hostel. Breakfast was simple and pretty much the same thing for everyone, everyday : a small bowl of fruits, a glass of juice, coffee and eggs with bread.

The staff was really nice and always smiled. The location is close to the backpack area and ideal to explore the town from. The room is clean but basic. All accomodations are expensive in Cartagena so for price quality this place is pretty good but i will not give 4 stars for it as it isnt special

Quaint little b&b right in the heart of Getsemani. Room was very comfortable with air con (essential in Cartagena), and reasonably priced! Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was decent and they offer 1pm checkout which is quite rare! Would definitely recommend!

Nice little hotel in a quiet residential road in Getsamani, a few minutes walk from dozens of bars and restaurants. It's also a 10 minute walk to the the walled city, so everything is easily negotiable on foot. Our room was good-sized, beds were ok and the air-conditioning was brilliant. It's a bit old, but it does the trick, also good value for money. The cleaning lady (can't remember her name) was one of the most lovely people we got to meet in Colombia, and the rest of the staff were nice too

"Such a nice Casa! "
12/07/15 Patricia M
We stayed at "Casa Carmen" for 6 nights and we really enjoyed it because: - the reception staff and also the Señoras preparing the breakfast were so friendly and nice. Always smiling! - the room was really comfortable and equipped with air con (which is really nice for Cartagena's heat) and fan and we absolutely enjoyed the rooftop terrace! - we really liked the included breakfast (coffee, fresh juice, fresh fruits, eggs, toast/arepas, marmalade and butter) - the area (Getsimani) and especially the street are really nice and the street was quiet at night - just few meters away there are our two favorite restaurants: Lunático & Fedora - you should go there! (Menú del Día was around 10.000-15.000 COL and always delicious) We would definitely go there again! ¡Muchas Gracias Casa Carmen!

Maria and senora Ruth, very kind, friendly and helpful. The other staff is also very nice. Room is very nice with own bathroom with shower and toilet, tv with a lot of channels, and a very necessary airco because of the November heat of Cartagena. Hot water is really not necessary. Hostal is centrally located in Getsemani, safe area - also at night - and around the corner of calle Media Luna, the nightlife strip of Cartagena. Breakfast is lovely with fresh fruit and fresh fruit juice, and mostly fried eggs and toast or yuca. The price is also very nice especially if you book for a longer stay and direct online (save) with the hostel. Travelled around and have been treated nice but their friendliness is genuine and exceptional. Good free wifi in the room.

Staff is present 24/7 at reception, always friendly and ready to help out. The hotel is very small, but that just makes it cosier. Rooms are a bit dirty, quite dusty, but you shouldn't care about that at this price! Every morning freshly made breakfast. Would recommend and stay here again!

"Nice stay"
10/14/15 RockPaperHairDesigns Edmonton, Canada
I had a nice stay here, it is close to the hostel/bar district but around the corner enough that it is nice and quiet. The breakfast is okay, toast eggs and juice. Front desk couldn't find my Expedia booking when we got there at 10.30 pm, and didn't speak any English so we spent about 30 minutes behind the counter filling out "their" online booking, only to have it be erased, to do again, then to be told the price was more (150,000 cop) vs the 112,000 online deal I had secured (and had email proof of) eventually I got him to just give us our keys as we were tired and wanted to sleep. The morning staff found our booking and everything was okay, but be prepared for front desk confusion if booking online

"Great location and very friendly staff"
10/01/15 T4938SEdanielt London, United Kingdom
Located in the best part of town for night life and restaurants. Staff were very friendly and helpful and most of the rooms were big and spacious and clean. We even had one that had a huge balcony and the air-conditioning worked. The breakfast consisted of lots of traditional Colombian food and eggs and the fruit juice was not great. The nice thing was that the breakfast changed every day.

"Great location and ambience"
09/23/15 Paul N Montpellier, France
I think I got the best room; upstairs, at the back, with one double and two singles. The hotel has a lovely little courtyard (thanks partly to the neighbours overhanging mango tree) and rooftop terrace, with view to the old fort. The furniture and decorations were tasteful traditional. Breakfast was simple and good Cartagena fare. The only downsides were a nearby roomful of fellow guests who were noisy in the evening and a shower with no hot water.
