"An average hostel"
This place is just Ok. Nothing great about it. For the same rate there are many other places which are near the train station. Some of things which I did not like are 1. There is no lift, so if u have a heavy trolley bag be ready to take it up to the 3rd floor (my room was on third floor). 2. No lockers provided (trust your roomies), nothing was lost […] but I expected a locker in a shared accommodation. 3. Breakfast is just bread jam/butter along with tea or coffee no cereals at all. In my trip I stayed in 5 different hostels this was the worst one. 4. Very strict with their booking policy. I tired to reduce a day from my booking but they were not ready to make that change, I was easily able to do that in one of the hostels. However, this is more of a policy issue. Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Really nice area and nice people at the hostel"
I had my doubts since it was one-star but was pleasantly surprised by a serious owner, though the other receptionists didn't seem to know much. The room was great and I met alot of cool people living there as well, everyday was a fun time!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not a great hostel"
09/04/14 feedmymedia Cape Town Central, South Africa
I had no choice but to book this hostel for my friend and I, we had left planning too late and were forced to book this place. On arrival there were some rude guest having a disagreement with a fairly strict reception guy. I can't say who was at fault, but it didn't set the tone for a good experience. Our shared toilet didn't have a working light, so when we got back to the hostel from our night out we had to use the bathroom in the pitch dark. In the morning when we reported the issue we were told the light works try again, the light certainly didn't work. I was happy to leave this hostel and certainly wouldn't recommend the hostel to anyone else!
"AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Clueless, careless and unprofessional"

I arrived at the hostel with two friends at half 4 pm on 4th August, and despite the other hostels we'd tried being full the receptionist managed to sort us 3 available beds in a 12 person sharing dorm. We were allocated particular beds however when we went into the room there were already people's belongings on these beds and they were clearly occupied. There were however 3 beds that seemed untouched that we assumed to be free so we took these, after checking with the receptionist who said this was ok. We then headed out into town. We returned to the hostel at about 1.30am to find two of the beds we had put out belongings on to be taken, nevertheless two of the beds we had originally been allocated now appeared empty so we took these so as not to disturb the rest of the room and decided to find our belongings in the morning (now been scattered around the room as a result of being moved). About an hour later after drifting off, the two of us that had taken our originally allocated beds were awoken by two people trying to get in the beds, both claiming to have been assigned the same beds. We took the conversation to the reception as the other people in the room were all sleeping. After a long time trying to find out the cause of the problem with the receptionist, he finally realised the beds had been double booked, (which our two receipts clearly already revealed) and appeared not actually free when we were allowed to pay €35 each for them earlier. After waiting another 20mins or so, and numerous conversations between the "boss" and receptionist they said they had found two more beds in another hostel the other side of Amsterdam. As the other people had booked first we allowed them to have the original two beds. Even though we were prepared to accept this inconvenient solution to a very avoidable problem, providing the hostel paid for our taxi there. This however they flatly refused to do despite it clearly was their error. The receptionist was unauthorised to make any decisions or provide taxi expenses without the "boss''s" permission yet the boss had instructed not to contact him again and deal with the problem, it was clear the receptionist was in a difficult position. We felt this was outrageous and demanded to speak to this "boss" ourselves to which the receptionist rang him back and allowed us to speak to him; we simply reiterated our situation and explained why we felt why we felt our request necessary, to which he was extremely short and rude even stating "either pay for the taxi or sleep on the streets". It was now gone half 3 and we were starting to lose our patience. After the "boss" hanging up mid conversation leaving us and the receptionist in a very awkward situation, he clearly understood and agreed it was their responsibility to amend but had no power to do so. Now, nearing 4am, the receptionist after a conversation on the phone in another language, exclaimed Annemarie hostel now suddenly appeared to have two free beds in a private room. Now very angry and tired we had the receptionist turn on the light in our original room so we could collect all our belongings to move up the the new room. We arrived at the new allocated room which had clearly been free all day not understanding why this was not the first chosen solution for the problem. The next morning at 9am, as check out was 10am, we went back down to reception to speak to the boss in person, as we had agreed with him on our previous phone conversation, to try and negotiate a refund. The boss wasn't there and we were ignored by the receptionist for 20mins, after then realising we weren't going to leave, he informed us no refund was possible. From previous experience we were aware of the lack of power of the receptionist we demanded he called the boss who then point blank refused to refund and hung up. In addition the room we were given was incredibly dirty, i have attached a picture of the duvet stains. I have travelled many times and have never experienced service like this. I'm absolutely appalled and would advice everyone avoid this hostel at all costs.

this place has a lot of awful reviews, and the truth of it is that this hostel is absolutely fine. I stayed here for 3 nights with 3 friends in a 6 bed share. its basic, but it has everything you need. the rooms are small, which only matters if you intend on spending a lot of time in your room.. which most travellers do not. its location was perfect for exploring Amsterdam, with good public transport links and a lot of stuff to do around the hostel too. We found that in general, Amsterdam was quite pricy, and being from London, thats saying something! so for this hostel, paying around 30 euros a night, we thought was quite reasonable for Amsterdam prices, although I can see why other reviews say that this hostel is overpriced because it is quite basic. A lot of the reviews say that the manager was rude, but he was perfectly love to us! The only thing I would seriously fault is the kitchen. If you intend on cooking to save money, I would maybe try and find another hostel with a more substantial kitchen.

I did this trip the last minute and i had to find a hostel to stay and this was the only one available.. I dont really know the prices in Amsterdam but I think it was a bit too expensive.. 65 euros per night in a 4 bed room per person.. breakfast was included but I didnt have time for that.. also the check out time is at 10 am... a bit too early.. isnt it? there was no where to charge my phone in the room because there was only 1 socket in the whole room.. overall its a good place to stay.. friendly staff but wasnt for my taste..
"Poor skimpy facilities at highly inflated prices"
07/17/14 BenLee888 San Francisco, California
The facilities are small, old and without lockers. Lots of dangerously steep stairs. The beds are narrow and fragile and overcrowded - my foot was sticking in someone’s face and others were sleeping head to head. The upper bunk has no ladder to climb nor guard rails to protect you from falling. There are not enough bathrooms - need to queue plus lack of paper! Rates are very high compare to cheaper options nearby. Manager not very flexible nor accommodating but the rest of the staffs are okay. Very unlike other hostels. Often fully booked with not enough toilets and need to wait in line just to find it’s out of paper! No full kitchen - just microwave and not even forks. Breakfast consist of stale bread and not even a toaster to make it more palatable at the least. The fact that they advertised “Non-smoking throughout” - yet people were smoking in the yard behind (as they provide some kind of ashtray) and the smoke drift into the kitchen and halls etc. There were mice in the room and since there were no lockers, all the luggages were on the floor for the mice to invade. They know about it and ask you not to have food there - But beware that mice also eat cosmetics and tooth paste as well as crawl all over your stuffs. Also a lack of plugs to charge your electronics.
"Friendly place to stay"
07/16/14 Jill V Carlisle, United Kingdom
When we arrived we were greeted by friendly staff who spoke great English, and despite them not having record of our booking they found us a room. The rooms were adequately sized, however there was no ladder to the top bunks, making them a little difficult to get into. Breakfast was provided free of charge, there was free WiFi, free computer use, free maps and a small selection of snacks to buy. The location was great with tram stops very close and it is located near the vondelpark. The only problem was that we hadn't been told the checkout time and we misread the sign so at 10.30 we were rudely told to leave and that we wouldn't be getting our deposit back. However, we did actually get our deposit back and we were allowed to leave our backpacks in a locked room after we had checked out. Overall I would recommend the hostel Annmarie for anyone looking for a cheap and friendly place to stay
"Great location, poor facilities."

--- Things I like: Location is great. not in the red light zone so you can avoid the noise. but van Gogh museum is in stone-throw distance and there's also an area with lots of bars/ restaurants in 10 min walk. It's combination of quietness and convenience. The staff is very friendly ( not the boss) The serve simple breakfast and you can also use the kitchen. There's wifi in the room. -- Things I dislike: bed is too small, so the guy from next bed stepped on my clothes across his bed. the lock of one bathroom is broken, so you either choose to take shower when everyone can walk in or you go to other floor. toilet is also very small. no lockers/ drawers/closet in the room. The boss isn't too rude but not too helpful either. Because I didn't compare with other hostels in Amsterdam, I'm not sure if their price is good value. But in my opinion, 40 euro for a bed in 12-beds room is really expensive.

Decided to go to Amsterdam with friends. We wanted an hostel with kitchen so we could save on meals. For this reason only we choose this hostel. When we noticed the "kitchen" consisted in only a microwave oven it was already too late. Entering our room (at the ground floor) we saw a cat laying on one bed. As we started unpacking and discussing the situation the owner entered the room and said that it was the last chance for us to be quiet or else he would have kicked us away. It was only 5 pm and there was no one else in the room. No prior warning was given before. We had just payed the whole stay (without receipt!). When we informed him about the cat he just said it was normal, that if we didn't want the cat to enter our room we could close the window (saying goodbye to fresh air!). We later found blood stains on some of the sheets and unknown stains on the others that made we doubt the staff cleaned the beds. Finding a metal fork under one of the pillows took away every doubt. The "breakfast" consisted in bread, peanut butter and jam. We were rudely asked to have breakfast at 8:00 am only. Other things: - only one tiny toilet and one tiny shower per floor (with no ventilation) - no locker - no ladder for the bunkbeds - no receipt - overpriced Excellent hostel if you want to waste money and be treated badly

Big group of 41 students is to many for Annemarie Hostel. We had to meet in the museumpark, because there was no space at the hostel, and even in the garden, we were asked to be quiet and not to talk.
"Very basic hostel, to many drugs"
05/19/14 J T Chicago, Illinois
While the staff and owners here seemed to be doing their best to provide a decent stay, they failed. First of all, I'll give the owners credit for trying to keep drugs out of the hostel, so far as telling people to leave if they were caught smoking inside and frequently telling people "This is a hostel, not a coffee shop". I definitely appreciate this and understand that the main problem were the idiot druggies who couldn't handle being un-stoned for 5 minutes out of the day. However, it is hard to sleep when the guy across from you is smoking hashish at 3 in the morning and not being able to have any staff respond to it. The location of the hostel is good, being next to several of the museums and near a tram line, and I got a good price for a dorm room so it was a decent deal, but it was somewhat shabby and rundown. Breakfast was your standard hostel breakfast of toast and a couple eggs. Overall, great staff, shabby building and beds, but all brought down by the inability to control drug use within the rooms.
