it was ok for a economical travel & if some one is travelling aloneGenuine Expedia guest review
Expect what you would find in a dormitory filled with youth! I find the price is a little bit high considering I could have gotten a room for myself for cheeper. I was very surprised by how quiet the place was (despite the fact that we were in Amsterdam)Genuine Expedia guest review

Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Not as bad as some reviews!"

Yes, the hostel is basic. It's a hostel. The room was small but clean, perfectly fine for staying in 3 nights as we were. One drawback is that it only had one plug (although many people seemed to charge their stuff in the reception/dining area) we planned ahead for this and brought a splitter from home. There was only beds and a sink in the room so nowhere to keep clothes, didn't bother us but worth mentioning. Beds are comfy and you get a sheet as well as a duvet which was great in the hot weather. The shower and toilet were communal - hostel was full when we were there and only once had to wait for the shower, and really we could have gone to another floor. Admittedly, the toilet is grim. Not as bad as a festival by a longgg way but could probably do with replacing (2nd floor toilet), smelled slightly and generally just looked old. The staff were always happy to help and went above and beyond to make our stay better. The reception area had a dining area which showed english tv, had lots of plugs and the best connection to the free wifi. This is where you'd find a great social environment each evening. It is also where breakfast was served - bread and jam, tea and coffee. We didn't bother going down after trying it the first day. They really shouldn't bother and should channel that money elsewhere. The good news is that there's a mcdonald's only 2 minutes down the street. The location of this place is my main reason for the "Very Good" rating. Close to museums and nightlife, you get the best of both. Close to the main tram links - so you never have to wait for long for a tram. When you step outside the hostel there's plenty of bars and restaurants to go to and have food/drink. I would recommend this hostel to anyone - yes it's basic and a little noisy but that's because it's cheap and a social-able place. It's not pretending to be anything more than that.
"Don't be scared! Basic but a bit of craic!"

Having read the reviews before staying I was absolutely terrified of Orfeo .However it was SO MUCH BETTER than I had expected. Our room was compact and basic but it was all we needed. There was only 1 shower between 32 but there was never a queue of more than 1 person. One guy even let me over take him in the queue, just out of niceness. The lack of lockers did not cause any problem, we obviously brought any valuables with us but felt safe enough to leave are rucksacks unattended during the day. It is in a central location and although the street is loud at night we were so shattered there was no problem about sleeping. It was the people that we met that really made our stay great! Everyone mixed and got on, we met some really interesting people from all over the world and would hang out with the people in our room each night. The fact that the hostel is reasonably small meant many people would come together in the lobby in the evenings. My friend dropped her interail and plane tickets one night, someone found them outside, dropped them into the lobby and the staff returned them. I mean come on that is as nice as you can ask for? You get what you pay for, if you aren't willing to rough it a bit go else were but if you are you could do much worse than Orfeo. Everyone we meant during are 3 day stay was happy enough with the service so the negative reviewers may not be in the majority.
"ITS A TRAP!"

Out of pure desperation as all other hostels were seemingly booked at the time, myself and two other friends chose to stay at Hostel Orfeo during our 4 night duration stay in Amsterdam. It is not worth the amount of money you pay by any means! If you want better accommodations, there is an outdoor park nearby in walking distance called Vondelpark, seriously, go there, I had a more comfortable sleep under a tree hungover than I did in the bunk beds in this hostel. Granted, Hostel Orfeo is in prime location, but that is literally the one and only positive aspect I have to offer on this hostel. However, the hostel itself is very easy to miss at it appears conspicuous with its lack of sign from the outside. They claim to have Free WiFi and that is just bogus as the only WiFi signal I was able to pick up was out on our small outside deck out of our room (that you had access to by climbing out of the window, convenience at its finest) and it wasn't even the hostel's WiFi network, it was from a nearby restaurant. If you enjoy sleeping on rusted out bunkbeds and having pull strings to flush toilets Hostel Orfeo is the destination for you! I seriously pity anyone who is overweight or is confined to a wheel chair as there are winding stair cases, no elevator, the rooms are very compact and the bathroom is smaller than that of an airplane bathroom. I really have to hand it to the designers of the hostel though, the graffiti and wall scratching's everywhere is really a nice decorative touch (sarcasm). Anyone from the street had access to our hostel so if that allows you to sleep at night then I encourage you to fill your boots. The staff at the front desk were completely clueless, I had requested directions to the nearest café where I could purchase a crepe and it took one staff member 30 minutes to locate it on Google Maps, while he rolled a joint. If you enjoy smelling feces 24/7, watching other travelers trip out in the common area on the main floor then please, I highly recommend Hostel Orfeo for all of your backpacking needs (or lack thereof). Also, since when does peanut butter and jelly sandwiches constitute as breakfast? This place is a rip off, homeless people live better than anyone staying in this hostel.

It was my first time in a hostal and I had a very good experience. It's a clean place and the people in charge are very friendly. They don't have lockers in the rooms but they have included breakfast.
"Stay away from here"

This place is dirty, ugly, loud and uncomfortable from a to z. On top of all of that, they charged much more expensive due to a mistake on their website. It's a SCAM!!! Bad karma to these people! seriously... We found puke in the showers and hair everywhere seriously...stay away from here.
"Good hostel, horrible bathroom"

I really enjoyed the hostel and common areas but the bedroom and bathroom are horrible. The staff is kind and will always help you. The location is excelent, near the bulldog, anne frank museum and iamsterdam letters.
"Appreciate What You Have"

Nice place, a lot of character right in the middle of all the action! A beautiful canal and Bourbon Street blues bar just to the left, and Leidsepleine all around. The best collection of nightlife in Amsterdam is right outside the door. The reception room is a blast too, as a matter of fact the whole street is like an old Western set. Access to most of the best and most famous clubs in Amsterdam: Sugar Factory, Up/Kring, Melkweig, Chicago Social, Be-At, Hard Rock, Paradiso on and on. In the day time, Vondel Park, the Rijks Museum, and Museum Pleine (Museum Square, where most of Amsterdam's museums are situated) are all minutes away by foot. This place cuts out most of your walking and searching, all you have to do is reach the hostel. Everybody knows where it is, as Leidsepleine is probably the most well-known and exclusive area in Amsterdam. The rooms are cleaned well every day and stay as nice as you keep them. Staff will help you with maps and tips, and they keep fresh hot coffee ready for free, not to mention a light breakfast every morning also free. This hostel frees you up to just do what you wanted to do when you came to Amsterdam: get around easily and have fun. As far as location, Leidsepleine is definitely da best!
"Cheap, good location, dodgy"
12/16/13 Sam L
The hostel is strategically located and cheap EUR10 per night, the best selling point. It has very narrow staircase so, those with huge backpacks, beware. Very tiny toilet and bathroom for sharing (EUR10 per night, nothing to expect). The bed was rather dirty and you are expected to climb up the bunk bed without any staircase. So, when the person sleeping the lower deck ain't friendly, you may face some issue every time climbing up and down. Breakfast that was included were bread, jam and some coffee and tea. WiFi is limited to the reception and dining area only. If you are on tight budget, this may be a choice but other than that, research on other hostels.
"Cheap, nothing more"
12/05/13 AmeyeM Frankfurt, Germany
The hostel was very cheap, and eventually that is all we needed as a group of students. Although I think some lockers for your stuff can help alot. In the end we were there just to crash after long days of walking around in amsterdam. The location is very good, probably the best point of this hostel.
