"Ryokan in Tokyo"
It is good to be able to stay in a traditional ryokan in modern city Tokyo. Staying in a ryokan is a genuine Japanese experience that all travelers to Japan should try. Annex Katsutaro Ryokan is easily reached from the nearby subway station via walking through an older neighborhood.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Wonderful ryokan in Tokyo in great neighborhood"
This was our third trip to Japan and Tokyo. This was our best stay so far- the ryokan proprietor and staff are all very helpful, non-smoking, and have thought out many details needed by travelers. The area is full of interesting sites within walking distance- the loop bus is across the street from the ryokan and can get you easy access to the Ueno zoo. […] If traveling to and from the Narita airport- the loop bus can get you to the Keisei ueno stop and it's a short walk to the new Keisei skyliner. The ryokan was clean, well laid out, and information about the loop bus was placed by the front door for easy access. The proprietor has a wonderful area map that is incredibly useful for walking the neighborhood. We have a family of four and the room for four was spacious and well laid out. One thing to note is that Japanese silk doesn't always hold up to multiple visitors so there were some stains on the walls here and there- to be expected but just so folks know. We loved our stay and will stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"A different experience"
It is a mix of western with Japanese. The room was some sort of plain in Japanese style. I was curious to be in that kind of hotel and I don't regret it. The best part was the neighborhood, it was typical Japanese with ordinary people around.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Our stay at Annex Katsutaro Ryokan idn Nippori"
Pleasant stay. Nice neighbourhood with little traditional shops in quiet streets, lots of little beautiful pagodas, surprising to discover in such a modern and busy Tokyo. Life in Nippori is relax, calm, people warm and open. The lady receptionist (owner of the hotel?) was lovely and helpful.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"A Nice Stay"
A really lovely neighborhood and friendly staff. The train and subway stations being so close was a great help. The rooms are 'Tokyo sized' but very comfortable and clean. Would recommend for any first Japanese experience.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Lovely clean, comfortable rooms, laundry available and friendly staff.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The feedback by previous reviewers were accurate so no nasty surprise. I think sleeping on the futons takes some getting used to as they are rather thin and you can feel the floor. Having said that, it was still a novel experience. Location wise, it's really good especially since the Nippori station of the Yamanote line is at most 10 mins walk away, […] direct connection to Narita airport and popular places like Tsukiji, Shinjuku, Shibuya and Harajuku. Would recommend this to anyone who is looking for reasonably priced accommodation at a good location.

Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Decent stay but doesn't live up to other reviews"
03/01/15 Carla G Hong Kong, China
The best part of this hotel is its location, which is: - in a lovely residential area with a good weekend market, some lovely shops and a pretty university campus - well connected to the rest of Tokyo with both the Tokyo subway and JR station close by - a direct train trip to Narita Aiport from the Nippori JR Station which is a 7min walk away (the main reason we chose it) The hotel itself doesn't have a lot of charm, being a square block with quite a few rooms and an extremely tired looking lobby decorated with what looked like used dorm room furniture. The breakfast looked pretty abysmal (they only serve a standard Western breakfast of sausage, eggs, toast, etc), so we took ourselves off to a nearby coffee shop which was fine but not stellar. The staff was quite variable, from lovely to grumpy. Overall, it was a good option for the price but not a clear winner.
"Very good ryokan"
01/26/15 BenjaminSchulte Cologne, Germany
For me as someone who traveled alone, this ryokan had everything I really needed: - Air-Conditioner - own bathroom with toilet and shower - towels, hair-dryer, free tea - very quiet - many more The ryokan was very easy accessible from Narita airport by Skyliner. It is near to two different stations which allows to access places like Shibuya, Harajuku, Akihabara, Ikebukero, etc. without even changing the train one time. The staff was very friendly and helped me a lot. Everything was very clean. I recommended this place to everyone who stays in Japan.
"Comfy hotel in a nice neighborhood"

Stayed here 2 nights with my bf in our 2nd part of Tokyo trip. A nice elderly gentleman helped me with my luggage. Mind you, it's not common for a Japanese man to offer that. Location is far from JR Nippori station, the one you need to take to go Shinjuku and Ikebukuro - 15mins walk. The good - it is 7 stations from Ikebukuro and costs only 170¥ per trip. It will be double if u travel to Shinjuku. In Japan, the train fare is high so if you book a cheap lodging but far away from city area like Ikebukuro and Shinjuku, you'll end up spending more on transportation. So factor in this when choosing your hotel. Room is big for Tokyo standard, clean and quiet. DIY laundry is 200¥. Toilet seat is not heated. Mini fridge, laundry hanger, big traditional cabinet and basic amenities are provided. No breakfast. Lots of touristy shops nearby, eateries, bars, convenience stores, toiletries/drug shop and two small supermarkets. I'd recommend you shop at Ikebukuro where there are huge department stores like Seibu, Tobu and Lumine. You can spend 2 days there as it has everything Shinjuku has, no need to travel so far. WiFi was not always stable. Would I recommend this hotel? Yes if you like comfort and the novelty of a traditional Japanese room. No, if you are on a budget and don't mind smaller but cheaper hotels closer to Shinjuku. So it depends what you want and where you want to go. Just for your comparison - we paid 21,600¥ for two nights here and paid 29,500¥ for three nights at Sakura Hatagaya - very convenient but very small room.

Very good, cheap and comfortable ryokan. Located very close to both Tokyo Subway and Nippori JR station. Rooms are clean, private and silent. We only had problems with the wi-fi connection (the password on the sheet they gave us was not correct it seems, and the connection was laggy and jumpy overall), but that was a minor issue for us. Recomended
"Best place to stay in Japan"
11/17/14 Hannahlrobertson_11 Melbourne, Australia
I've stayed here twice - once in 2009 and again in Nov 2014. I still think it's the best place to stay in Japan. From the airport, it's an easy 36 minutes to Nippori station by Skyliner. To get to Annex Katsutaro, you walk through a beautiful old village where there's plenty of treats for you to eat or take home. There's a charming little Japanese sweets shop down the road and a beautiful coffee shop just a few doors down from the Ryokan. The room itself is always clean, quiet and spacious with tea and coffee supplied. The hosts speak great English and are always eager to help. It's best to email ahead with your arrival time. I emailed the manager beforehand to warn him of our 9am arrival time after a gruelling 10 hour flight. He did his absolute best to give us an early check in, and when we arrived we only had to wait 20 minutes for the room to be ready! [he told us though "no promises" so please don't be disappointed if he can't accommodate, he means well] The manager gives you a map with local shops and restaurants in the area which is really handy. The Nippori station is on the Yamanote line which is the JR line you'll be using most if sightseeing (Harajuku, Shinjuku and Akihabara are all on this line). All in all, an excellent stay - the best Ryokan I've stayed in Japan.
"Excellent stay in awesome japanese style "
11/10/14 shirley900 Amsterdam, The Netherlands
An absolute fantastic experience! This ryokan is just around the corner of Yanakaginza, a local street with small local shops and eateries. 10 minute walk to Nippori station. We booked a deluxe room for 4 nights, the room is very japanese style with tatami mats on the floor and futons to sleep on. Very clean and neat. It also have a table, tv, airconditioning, closet, water cooker, cups for drinking tea. Since there are no bed and no chairs in the room, it is not suitable for ppl with weak legs or back. Breakfast is not included. The room is perfect for 2 persons with 2 suitcases. Although it sleeps 3 persons, that might not feel very comfortable (unless it is a small kid). Bathroom very spacious and shower pressure was very good. The owners are very friendly, always smiling, we felt very welcome. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone who would like to stay in a ryokan in Tokyo.
"Don't use google directions to find"
11/05/14 thewestxyz the west
It is about 15 min on foot from to Nippori station. To get there, go out the NW exit and follow the small road until it dead ends, turn left and the Ryokan is about 100 m on the left. The walk involves going down some steps and passing through a small open air arcade-like area. Google maps makes it complicated to find, but it is quite simple. The hotel is located in a quiet area and we were able to sleep with the window open at night (in October). The building is relatively new and appears to be made of poured concrete and lacks the charm of older Ryokans. The rooms are fairly spacious with comfortable futons on the floor. The wifi was excellent. The hotel was impeccably clean and the desk agents speak good English. There are no reading lights in the room, or chairs – so no bedtime reading. The location is near a variety of restaurants and also the Asakura Choso museum, home of the sculptor Asakura Fumio who specialized in famous people and cats. It is one of the more interesting small museums in Japan with a classic house and beautiful garden.
"Cozy ryokan in a quiet part of town"
10/30/14 Kallianira Stuttgart, Germany
The first thing one has to point out is the great location: just 2 minutes walk from the metro station (Sendagi, Chiyoda line) and 10 minutes walk from the JR train (Nippori station, Yamanote line), this ryokan is very easily accessible. Convenience stores, small shops and restaurants are also in very close proximity. The area itself is wonderful: located in Yanaka, the Annex Katsutaro is in one of the more quiet areas of Tokyo, made up of small houses with an abundance of temples strewn in here and there - a great place to come back to and relax after the bustle of the busier parts of town, and a wonderful area for walks. As for the ryokan itself: we had a very spacious, simple, very clean room, which would easily have fit a third futon next to our own two. There was enough space to stow away luggage in a spacious cupboard and a large open area beneath it. In the room we had facilities for brewing tea, a TV, a radio with iphone4 adapter and a small fridge. The Wifi worked flawlessly. The en suite toilet and bathroom were small and simple but clean, towels and basic toiletry are provided. All in all we were very satisfied with our choice in coming here. The staff are very friendly and speak good english, information and maps of the area are provided. If you enjoy the more 'authentic' experience and don't mind the distance to the more lively parts of town (about 15 minutes to Roppongi/ 20 to Shibuya by metro, which isn't really that much considering the size of the city), this might just be the place for you. Would definitely recommend! :)
"Great place situated along an amazing but less popular town"
10/17/14 Hafizuddien Singapore
Annex Katsutaro Ryokan was my second place of stay after Oak Hotel and it was well worth it. I had no clue if the place would be great but i primarily took the place because it was close to Nippori station where i could take the Keisei Skyliner up to Narita Airport. To my surprise, the area is situated at, Yanaka, which is an amazing place because of the Yanaka Market. The neighbourhood is safe and peaceful and convenience stores comes aplenty. As for the rooms, they are spacious and clean. Staff are meticulous and helpful and depending on which staff is on duty you may get some that don't speak english fluently so that may hinder communications a little but generally they are alright if you take your time to articulate your words. My original check in time was at 3 pm but i reached the place at 11 am since check out time for most places are at 10am and because the room was ready, they allowed me to check in earlier and that was a big boon for me. An overall great place to stay. Highly recommended.
