We stayed in several budget/midrange hotels in Tokyo and this one was the best. It's fairly small and the service was excellent (and staff's English while not perfect was above average in Tokyo). We got a huge (by Tokyo standards) Japanese style room that was clean and comfortable. The hotel is close to Nippori station (close to both Yamonote line and […] a train to Narita) in a quiet neighborhood. The room has a toilet and the bath is communal but it's very relaxing to soak in the hot water pool. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice place for a single traveler"
I like this hotel due to its convenient location next to Nippori Station, which connects directly to Narita Airport. Nippori Station is also on the Yamanote line. I prefer to stay near the smaller stations in Tokyo and avoid some of the crowds. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Nothing fancy, but a nice, quiet location.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Don't seek luxury. Seek old Tokyo."
I guess the average rating is low because most people look for something like Hilton here? If you crave for old neighborhoods that you rarely see in Tokyo these days, this would be the place to stay. The hotel is rather old, but very clean. People are friendly and helpful. It almost feels like I'm coming home. The best part is the sento-style bath. […] If you don't feel comfortable getting naked around others, this place isn't for you! Also there is a really cool neighborhood called Yanaka between Nippori and Ueno. Located very close to Nippori station, which is convenient for Narita airport access and the Yamanote line. Simple but comfortable room. Staff was amazing! I wanted to use the coin laundry, but it was in use, so the owner washed my clothes for me and left them neatly folded and separated in my room. After checkout, he offered to hold my bags for a few […] hours while I did some last minute shopping. Only downside was the relatively early 12:30AM curfew, although he said to call in advance if I might be late. Overall, the best hotel I stayed in in Tokyo. Great option for a single, budget traveler. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Clean, friendly and very convenient hotel"
It is good for short-term backpackers. It is quite simple hotel with very confident location. Just a few minutes you can hop on train to anywhere in Tokyo.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very close to JR Nippori station"
Typical small Japanese hotel room. You can quickly go to any place in Tokyo once you are familiar with JR lines and subway. The hotel is about 100 meters left side of north exit of the station. You can take Skyliner fast train from/to Narita airport just in 36 minutes. The hotel staff are friendly, and can manage to understand English. Laundry is available. […] There are some good restaurants nearby, a Japanese supermarket is a minute walking across street. A Chinese supermarket is about 300 meters right side of the same street. It is my first trip to Japan, and I don't speak Japanese, its convenience close to JR station helps a lot. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Would stay again."
It's a minute from Nippori Station. Even when you have a huge suitcase, it's easy. My friend and I had a 6 people room, so the room of course was very comfortable and nice. We had an inside hot spring all to ourselves because... not sure why. The place was clean and tidy. I love tatami. "Very Convenient Location, Close To Trains"
Tokiwa Hotel is in an excellent location and is 2 minutes form Nippori Train Station, on the Yamanote Line. Shibuya, Shnjuku and Tokyo stations are on this train line also, so very easy to get those stations for shopping! It was very easy to catch the train from Narita airport on the Keisei line and to get off at Nippori station. The room was clean […] and comfortable. Staff at the Hotel were very helpful. Nippori has lots of restaurants, a supermarket and a post office 2 doors from the hotel which has an ATM for withdrawing money. I will stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Traditional Japanese Hotel"
You have to take off the shoes at entrance, and go on with flip-flops. Only public shower (WC in room), no proper bed, only Tatami with thin mattrass. Smelly room. Personnel, however very friendly.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Great hotel at a great price"

I am a 69 year old woman. I traveled to Tokyo alone and stayed at the Tokiwa Hotel in February, 2014. This is definitely a great find. My room had a small, private bath; there was a flat screen TV; the staff was friendly but spoke very little English. The location was great with very easy access to the Nippori Station. I could easily go into town or to the travel information station just two train stations away at Uneo for the equivalent of $3/day or less. The hotel only cost $70/night, and the local sushi/tempura shops cost less than $10. Great bargain in greater Tokyo. There is also a public bath for those so inclined.
"Poor. Far from western standards..."
12/03/13 Meir G Haifa, Israel
This is more like a Japanese guest house Sleeping quality - poor. Floor futon and pillow filled with polystyrene balls... While making reservation bath amenities were described. Problem is there is no bath, just a toilette and a sink. Bath is public... It is far from western standards of comfort & cleanliness Stay out
"Loved this quirky hotel"

So this hotel is great - the location is fab - get off at Nippori Station - take East exit turn left and its 200yrds - when you arrive you are requested to take your shoes off and wear slippers ( we knew this from previous reviews) and you need to be in by 11.00 ( if you are going to be later you need to let them know in advance) - both of these are pretty standard in Japan. The rooms are small but again this is Tokyo.... but there is a fridge and tea and coffee facilities and a/c plus robes - the bathroom is small but pretty perfectly formed and there are public baths too!! The staff are helpful (in a non expressive way!) - we left our bags there for a couple of days and on the last day when we checked out which was no problem - they do laundry here and its cheap! and there are vending machines too. The immediate area has some restaurants, fast food and convenience and the square right outside the station had stuff going on at night ( drumming, traditional dancing, food stalls) which was fun This was a great base for exploring Tokyo, the price was excellent and we loved the night manager!!!

I was very happy to stay for 6 nights at the Tokiwa - my first stay in that hotel. I find the Nippori area very handy, the station is nearby and access to both Tokyo and Narita Airport is simple. My room was a reasonable size, the neighbours did not disturb me at all, and the wi-fi worked perfectly all the time. Each morning for breakfast I walked through Ueno Park to the station where i could get the Japan Times and decent coffee at Andersen. The walk there through the cemetry is very restful... I will certainly stay at the Tokiwa again. The staff at the front desk could not have been more helpful.
"Good value in Tokyo center!"

Me and a group of friends stayed at this hotel in June. We booked 4 rooms. I have to say that we enjoyed this hotel very much. It has a "family run style" which makes it very user friendly, and the staff is extremely kind and helpful. When we arrived they told us that the triple room was small, and they offered another room for the baggages, and then gave us a japanese style room, at the same price. Internet LAN, wireless and public computers are available, as well as a cheap laundry, and a nice public bath. The Yamanote line (useful to those travelling with Japan Rail Pass) is just 100m away on the same street, but the hotel is well silent though. All in all it was a very pleasant stay, in central Tokyo, for a bargain price. I would suggest this to anyone.
"Great Location in the old Tokyo"
06/11/10 mk_bom Seoul, Korea
Very close to Yamanote line(only 50 meter from the hotel), and Yanaka Ginza(one of the famous place of Shitamachi-old town of Tokyo) is 3 minutes walk from the hotel. Ueno and Asakusa can be reached by 20~30 minutes' bicycle ride. I think I should have spent more time near the hotel, other than the crowded city area like Shinjuku. The hotel itself has good value. The bathroom is small and furniture looks a bit old, but room is clean and cozy. Railroad is close to station, but my room was the opposite side of railroad and I've hardly heard the sound of trains. Staffs can understand my simple English and tried to meet my requests. I was informed that breakfast is serviced from 6am to 9am, but one day when I tried to have my breakfast at 8:30 am, the restaurant had nobody and the light was out. However considering the price and location the hotel has great value and I'd like to visit the hotel again.
"good business hotel"
11/08/08 casuaa California
Stayed for two nights. No problems, has all the amenities that one would expect from a business hotel, fridge, TV, bidet, etc. There's wireless Internet and there's a couple computer stations downstairs for guests to use. The owner was very nice and upgraded my room from a Single A to Single B for free. They replied to my e-mail about reservations in English but when conversing with them, I just used simple Japanese. This seems to be a bit of an older hotel as the paint is peeling a bit in the corners and there were some stains behind the shower head, but everything else was impeccable which was as expected from a Japanese hotel. Since I've previously only stayed at mainstream hotels, an interesting thing for me is that you have to take off your shoes at the entrance and place them in a shoebox and wear slippers to your room. Like Toyoko Inn, you have to leave your key at the front desk when you leave. The doors close at 12:30 am. There's also an onsen, but I didn't try it. I paid around 6500 yen per night so this is a reasonable alternative to places like Toyoko Inn and is a convenient stop if you're taking the Skyliner from Narita Airport
