"Not a luxury hotel, but beautifully situated"
The Castle Tavern is located on the historic market place. I had a nice view of the castle keep from my window, and it was surprisingly quiet. The people were reasonably friendly and served a good breakfast. The accommodation, however, had some shortcomings. The room (No. 2) was tastelessly furnished, and the lighting was poor. The door squeaked badly […] and sometimes locked itself when pulled shut, but sometimes didn't. The bathroom for No. 2 (which admittedly had a lower rate than other rooms) was not en suite but located separately on a lower level. There was a danger of locking oneself out of the room when going to the bathroom at night without a key, and I was not warned of this. The shower was not great, and neither Kleenex nor lotion was provided. Rather basic, I would say. However, the Romantic location made up for the inconveniences. "Nice room but no beer on pump!"
Our room was nice and clean but as there was an impending change of management there was no real ale available. The pub decor was generally shabby and needs refurb. The room itself was nice. Breakfast was cooked well.Genuine Expedia guest review
No comment. Don't book itGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Excellent value for money, staff very friendly & felt more personal than the larger hotels we've stayed in the past. Staff waited up for us until 1.30 am to let us in, would defo stay again!Genuine Expedia guest review
Mix up with booking which they eventually sorted but they were offhand and no apology given. They had no real ales and items on menu not available. The bed was old and CLANKED every time we moved. The staff were courteous but not friendly. The whole place needs decorating. Won't be returning!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great beer & free sarnies at a World Cup evening."
Had some work to do in the area so booked this Inn for one night B&B. right in town square, free parking 6 til 8 so no bother there. Pub room upstairs was spacious, clean and tidy & en-suite. Got a double room including cracking breakfast for £45.....bargain. Watched England match as Uruguay stuffed two past an England team of useless plodders. Didn't […] spoil my night either as it was totally expected. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

It's a personal get away on own and it's enjoyable place as no one to hassle me apart general locals for little chit chat etc but overall good place to stayGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The Castle Tavern is well situated in Richmond's market place. Clean and well presented room, however the en-suite turned out to actually have the bathroom downstairs. Evening food is served at the pub however at 8:30 I was too late to order this, but next morning's breakfast was good though. Parking is free in the market place but is restricted to […] 2 hours between 8am and 6pm plus you will need to acquire a local parking disc for the car windscreen. Conveniently situated, clean, comfortable with helpful staff and a good breakfast. The room was comfortable with en suite modern bathroom with good shower. Just what was needed. Very pleasant stay. "Adequate 1 night stop over without live band!"
We used this hotel as a stopover for participating in a nearby long distance bike race starting very early the next day at 7am. We had to leave the hotel at 6:30AM. Although the landlady was friendly and organised dropping us off a cereal breakfast (instead of getting up to make a cooked breakfast) due to getting up early, we were unable to organise […] eating it due to a lack of space in the room and getting up late after being kept awake until at least 11:30PM due to a live band playing directly under the room in the hotels pub. In between the band taking breaks, the background music was also loud enough keep you awake. They did turn the live music down after 10:30 or so, however it carried on at a level to keep us up. This was not explained in their Hotel description which is misleading; had we known this we would not have booked the room at all and found somewhere quieter. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"The Castle Tavern Richmond"
The Castle Tavern is a Yorkshire market town pub. Temper any expectations, for this basic offer. The service was on the below par, for hotels of this kind and well below for the average range. This said, it was inexpensive and the bed was comfortable.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Parking was easy at around 7.45pm, kitchen closed at 8pm but chef was happy to stay a few minutes longer. Excellent beer but steak n ale pie was a bit stale. My room was in fact two rooms with double bed in both, access to the en suite was through the second bedroom. Unfortunately our accommodating chef left the very noisy kitchen extractor running […] all night. This was directly below my window and did not allow me the sleep I needed. Breakfast was poached egg as requested but was a little overdone. Staff were very friendly from the moment I arrived, I would consider returning but would request a room well away from the kitchen! Fantastic location in market square overlooking castle. Comfortable room on the second floor but Oh! -those stairs. Even stairs to the our private bathroom which was separate from the bedroom. There is no car park but there was plenty of room in the square where parking is managed with a disc which is supplied by the inn. Friendly welcome, help given […] to carry up our luggage. No meals other than breakfast but there are plenty of eating places within walking distance. The nearby French restaurant is very good. The Castle serves a full English breakfast. We enjoyed our stay, we was in room 3 a large double bed room with bath and shower. This is not a place for people who want a modern, quiet place to stay. But if you are like us, who go to bed late, and like music, it is no problem, for there is music on friday & saturday night. The friendliness of the staff and people in the area was noticed by my wife. […] We had a breakfast on the first day which was good and large, but we had eggs on toast the next two days. It is a old building most likely built before the 17th century and has narrow stairs, no lifts. We would go again.Never had a evening meal there, Fish &chips at the local shop which was very good, next day at a Wedding, but the best was a meal sitting outside THE TURF HOTEL on Sunday dinner time, I ordered large Roast Lamb £7.89 a small Steak & Ale Pie with four types of veg & saute cheese potato's & gravy. The best meal I have had for a long, long time, every mouthful was a explosion of taste. that made our three day break. MR N Ingram Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Our night away"
The pub area was very nice and the staff were really helpful. The room was very dark and dingy, unable to get hot water from shower in the morning. The breakfast in the morning was first class, so on the whole it was an acceptable stay, but would chose another hotel if we stay in Richmond again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

We didn't actually stay here but ate in the bar. The Landlady is a Lancashire lass with a Yorkshire welcome. We had a lovely meal which was reasonably priced. The pub is traditional with a modern twist. We will be returning in the near future.
"Ok for one night"

Stopped here overnight, was ok but found staff a bit nonchalant, the rooms cold and grubby and the yard at the back of the hotel totally covered in dog mess, we had to tiptoe through it all! The only saving grace was a good breakfast next morning served by a pleasant chef who chatted to us. Wouldn't choose to stop here again and wouldn't recommend it, there are nicer places in Richmond for the same money.
"Better than I feared but a few things let it down"
09/29/14 DavidMorris Hythe, Southampton
The evening before arriving (three months after I booked) I read some damning reviews on TripAdvisor and was so alarmed that I - genuinely - considered cancelling. However initial impressions were encouraging - the room was large, the bed was clean and comfortable and the lad who greeted us was friendly and helpful. Certainly I feel some of the previous reviews on here have been excessively harsh but there were a few silly little things that let them down.... .....no milk in the room for the tea/coffee (despite two requests) .....we ran out of toilet paper (and the empty roll was in the bathroom for three days without being removed - as was the rubbish in the bin) .....the shower gel etc were never topped up However, the breakfast was very good - plentiful and efficient and the staff did seem keen to help. I desperately wanted to leave t least a "very good" status and it could so easily have been such. As it was I think 'Average' is about right.

We had read most of the reviews on trip advisor before booking The Castle Tavern. Although quite a few of the reviews were negative and the hotel was positioned 32 out of the 43 accommodations listed by trip advisor for Richmond but still had an unbelievable 4 out of 5 rating (I would like to see the formula). We were shown to our double en suite room No 3 which was in need of some refurbishment, the view was a brick wall down an entry. We did not mind the outlook too much as we thought it might be quieter than looking over the busy square at the front of the hotel. How wrong we were! The booming from the jukebox went on till 12-45. We had brought ear plugs but this still did not compensate for the vibration of the floor and noise in the bar. I must have drifted off to sleep soon after, only to be woken at 01-30 by a noise from above us and then a sound of steady dripping of water next to me, this turned into a waterfall coming through the ceiling onto me, the bedside cabinet, the bedside lamp and onto my mobile phone. I jumped up sharply and turned on the lamp (which could have been fatal due to the amount of water cascading down). I went out onto the landing and bumped into the manager who told me he had a burst boiler (a previous review I found also mentions flooding in one of the rooms?). His attitude was ‘well sh** happens’. We were shown to another room overlooking the square which had a shared bathroom; we transferred all our belongings but did not sleep at all for the rest of the night due to this upheaval, the drunks on the street, the bin collections and then the market vans arriving at about 5am. We asked the chef at 7-30 to see the manager who I had spoken too during the night, Brenda the chef did contact him but she said he was unavailable and would not be around till mid-afternoon. Brenda did contact him again to say we were not going to leave till we have seen him. He then sent a message to Brenda to reimburse us for our second night’s stay. I believe he was still on the premises but did not have the courtesy to face us. I pointed out to Brenda that my mobile phone was now not working due to the water getting into it and have left a message for him to contact me regarding a replacement. I don’t expect him to, but will seek further advice if this is not resolved. I was too shattered to eat breakfast or feel like I wanted to look search for another B&B, so we went home. I would have marked this hotel as a zero but the review requires at least one mark.

On arrival, there was some mystery about whether we were booked in, and only agreed when we produced the booking.com printout. The so-called private shower room was not private at all, down a flight of public stairs and open to anyone. On finding that the kettle in the room was filthy, we said we were not prepared to stay there. The outside of the kettle was grimy and sticky, and inside there was dirt on the sides, with a lot of muck on the bottom, with a lump of muck coming out when you poured the water out. On informing the landlord of our concerns, he went to look at the room, and came back and agreed with us. We left and thought that would be the end of matters, but he then went and charged our credit card with the cost of the room. We returned next day and he said he would have to speak to booking.com, and would phone us back as we were leaving the area. He did not, and on our contacting booking..com we were told he had not contacted them about the matter, but that he was no longer registered with them, effective the day after our visit. They did say they would try to help resolve things for us.

Phoned up day before asking if we could arrive early to get changed as party started at 2pm,they said that was fine, arrived next day only to be told we were double booked, they got us booked in to Cordilleras house but they had not notified the owners we would be arriving early to drop bags of.as a result we had to change in a friends room that was staying at castle tavern.Would not recommend this place.our friend wouldn't either Would definitely recommend Cordilleras house that we went to,Owners were lovely couldn't do enough for you and the room was super and great breakfast too

Room clean , bed comfortable , there it ends. On arrival as been shown to our room promptly told that there was no chef for early breakfast next day and girl was not coming in till 8 am so hoped we weren't expecting breakfast any earlier. Don't think room windows had been washed for months however did mask the brick wall . After a great night out at the theatre and a night cap in the pub we tried to have a nights sleep . The juke box was so loud , after ringing down was promptly told that staff were cashing up and it would be tuned down , eventually well after midnight it was . Breakfast was a whole new experience , staff appeared not to want to be there at all , communication nil . Even when checking out social skills were non existent . So glad we only booked 1 night, if I has not had a glass of wine the night before I would have packed our case and driven home at 1 am . If we had booked 2 nights there was no chance we would have stayed . If you want a room in a noisy pub this the place to go.
"Ok but customer service needs attention"

booked via booking.com for a Saturday night. On arrival told the hotel was double booked by the lady behind the bar who kept on puzzling, going into a back room to speak to someone unseen and returning offering nothing more. Another couple arrived and they were double booked too. Cue more going to back room in between serving a round of drinks. Eventually told we were being given our rooms as we were there first. Not a good start and a hint of an apology would have been nice. Shown to rooms which were basic but clean with hair dryer, tea coffee etc. Breakfast items had to be selected the day before despite this the breakfast was very nice. On leaving said goodbye to staff and were blanked. In summary, basic and adequate but not particularly cheap with poor people skills.

OK expected a nice quiet stop over on the way to Edinburgh, but oops Richmond town centre was packed with a fair ground and revellers! However, the pub although busy was OK, nothing to write home about but clean spacious room and despite being over the bar (room 3) not too noisy. Good for budget hotel but dont expect too much. Also despite asking for our breakfast order the night before and duely handed in, its a shame that they did not take any notice of what was ordered. Also being faced by a scarey waitress (I think the landlady) and being slightly jaded from the night before, Mrs A and myself, although complained about being given tea rahter than coffee, decided to bottle out about complaining about the rest. Would think about staying there again, but would rather not.
