This small hotel is lovely and has a great view. The service was wonderful. I think I experienced high altitude sickness and Xiao Yang went out of her way to walk with my husband to a pharmacy and also made me rice porridge and delivered it to our room. All the staff was extremely nice and helpful-they arranged transportation for us to neighboring cities. […] At breakfast, a musician played a traditional Chinese instrument just for us! "In middle of Old Town Lijiang"
This is a beautiful small hotel located in the middle of old town Lijiang, which is both good and bad. It is very convenient, but the neighborhood is very noisy and crowded. I stayed 4 nights, which was maybe one night too long. I took some great day trips out to Baisha, Xue Shan, the Mu Mansion, and Dr. Rock's (famous botanist) former residence. The […] management and personnel were all extremely friendly, courteous and helpful. The hotel organized a Tea Ceremony for the guests, which was really lovely. "Quiet in Bustle"
LiJiang is crowded and loud. Zen Garden is peaceful - from the fish in the ponds to the gu zheng playing. Staff are great - they worked with me to properly express myself in Chinese given my limited Chinese skills. LiJiang is the jump off point for Tiger Leaping Gorge; if you plan to hike to gorge, a peaceful night at Zen Garden is the way to startGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"sweet little zen garden"
Zen Garden was hard to find, it is not marked from the street and finding it was hard, there is also no western street signs indicating where the actual street is, and because it is not accessible by taxi we had to wheel our bags through the streets looking for it but with a bit of help from helpful English speaking locals we eventually found our way. The […] staff were great, they spoke ok English the room was small and basic for the price I would have expected more, but it was adequate and the setting of the hotel itself with its 'zen garden' is pretty and the complimentary afternoon tea was a nice touch and the breakfast is great. Zen garden provides friendly welcoming service with clean accommodation and tasty but simple breakfast. Highly recommended with great location but set back from the noise and lively lanes of old town .
"A serene, cozy place in the bustling old town"

I stayed at the Zen Garden for 3 nights recently and agree with the positive comments. It's an artistic, clean, 16-room guest house in a great location (a secluded area very close to the old town's center). The staff are really friendly and speak enough English. The rather small rooms has comfortable beds, pillows and white linens. The small bathroom comes with complete amenities (and you can ask if you need anything else such as a hairdryer). The breakfast, served beautifully in small refillable portions, consists of: cereals, toasts, fruits, muffins, congee + boiled eggs, tea & coffee. They also serve free tea & snacks afterwards - which is quite a treat after spending the day out. From the rooms at the top floor you can see the mountains and the temple atop (which is lighted at night). The hotel also provides free wifi and luggage service between the hotel and main street which takes about 5 minute walk.
"charming small hotel"

We loved this place and the staff were excellent, gave me ginger tea and an extra duvet when I got a touch of altitude sickness. setting is charming with great views from the balcony around the upper floors. we like the little cobbled streets leading up to the hotel but were grateful for the guide's help with bags. spend some time in the courtyard looking at the fish and soaking up the atmosphere. sound from the town can be heard but things quieten down after midnight.
"Beautiful haven from the crowded Old Town streets"
07/20/14 Jordan L Qingdao, China
Lijiang was a bit touristy, loud and crowded for us, but the Zen Garden Hotel made our trip there worth the while. It has a beautiful little courtyard and a location convenient to the shops and bars of Old Town. The rooms are cozy and the beds are comfortable (for Chinese beds). My favorite part of every day was enjoying their complimentary breakfast while chatting with other travelers and listening to the live zither music - the kinda feel foreigners unacquainted with China expect to find (but usually don't). The staff was very nice too. On our last day we had to catch an early flight and the gal at the front desk served us breakfast 30 minutes early. One caveat: Bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper and want any sleep before 11pm when the bars start to quiet down.
"PERFECT INN IN A GREAT CHINESE TOWN"

Zen Garden was a highlight amongst our recent 3-week tour allover China. Tucked away a few feet from the primary pedestrian street int he Old Town and near the area's squares and other attractions, this well run, visitor-friendly hotel was a great base for 4 days. Charming atmosphere, small but lovely room, pleasant daily breakfast and eager to please staff. If it's hot, make sure you grab one of the fans via the front desk. I am an a/c freak and we didn't need it, but would have been tough without the fan (which made it pleasant at nights) and there aren't enough for every room. You can use the hotel's kitchenette, fridge, etc. if you need to, freely 24 hours a day.
"Wonderful Spot in the Center of the Old Town"
07/04/14 Martha F Tel Aviv, Israel
I was part of a small group tour around China. Our leader and trip organizer had stayed at the Zen Garden and told us she thought it would be a highlight of the trip and it was. The property is owned by a Naxi woman who has taken great care to make the hotel peaceful, serene, warm, and accommodating. The staff is most helpful. The accommodations are simple, but ample. Breakfast is more than adequate and there is always, at any time, plenty of tea! It is in the center of the old town and that is a treat. You are right there in the thick of things. The views from the second floor during the day and night must be seen! This is a wonderful choice if you find yourself in Lijiang!
"Best hotel during entire China trip...."
05/29/14 Phil J Tahoe City, California
Found this hotel completely by accident. In center of Old Town Lijang, yet very peaceful setting. Charged 350 RMB for a room with two single beds including breakfast on a walk-in basis. There are lots of Botique hotels in old town Lijang and this one is competitive. Very courteous staff. Nice tea and cookie afternoon snacks. We stayed one night and left to hike the Tiger Leaping Gorge for one night before returning for a second night. Staff was helpful in arranging transportation to the Gorge, giving advice on bike rentals, and booking over the phone our next hotel stay for our journey beyond Lijang. Sustain - Ok internet connection - The staff let us store an extra bag there without charge while we hiked Tiger Leaping Gorge and stored our bags all day until we caught a taxi back to the airport - Good breakfast Improve - Price is a bit steep. You can find mre affordable guest houses in Old Lijang, but there may be a question of quality.
"Couldn't Be Better"
05/27/14 Bjorn L Encinitas, California
Spent a week at Zen Garden, and it felt like home. Staff is superb, especially in helping to arrange travel and drivers, which is very important for non-Chinese speaking visitors. The breakfasts were great. The "lobby" and courtyard are the best. The rooms are comfortable. There were many non-Chinese guests to talk with, which is good for foreigners. I agree with all the other reviewers.

We've spend four days in this hotel during our China trip and this hotel was one of the best we have stayed in: - Great service! The friendly staff welcomes you with kindness, tea and oranges. By far the best hotel service we have encountered. - A place of tranquility in the midst of Lijiang, relaxing Chinese (live) music in the mornings. - Nice & clean rooms. - Above average quality of breakfast. Enjoy your stay at the Zen Garden! Regards, Peter en Merel
"Nicest place in town"
05/23/14 LeMouchoir R
Quiet and peaceful place in a crowded and noisy town. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Especially estinable was an introduction in chinese calligraphy, which lasted one hour and was as well included in the modest price for the room as the transport of our luggage and other special offers.
