Not value for the price
Worst deal ever for the price we paid! The room is so small that barely fits our luggages, and the bed was uncomfortable. 2 stars given for its great location; other than that, I wouldn't recommend this hotel.

Pretty good
The hotel is attractive and has some unique ambience, because the building used to be a bank. Our room was comfortable and had everything we needed. The location of the hotel is also fine, situated near the canal, the main shopping street, and the Sushi Street. For breakfast they offered some toast and croissants, soup, coffee and tea.

Nice old hotel in a former bank
This hotel is comfortable and the staff is accommodating, but not very knowledgeable. It is within walking distance (10 minutes) from the train station, but we took a taxi. Check in was easy, but only one english speaker. Found room too small for three adults and three kids. Hotels.com staff had arranged to make sure we could have a roll away brought in. Went back to the desk, but was told this was not possible because it was a double room. The roll away was to be an extra $19 a night, but the staff wanted me to pay $40 extra a night to upgrade to a triple room. Just so happened that the staff member who had approved the roll away was working and was the english speaker. I showed her my reservation with the arrangement and she upgraded us to the triple for only $19 extra a night. As for knowledge, I was left wanting. We were not told about a street food festival (we chanced upon it after being recommended a shabu shabu place that had been closed for more than a year). When asked about a sightseeing cruise to Shokotan peninsula we were sent to the pier only to find that the company had been shuttered temporarily due to a government investigation into a recent crash. Just FYI during our stay it seemed like the whole of Otaru closes at 8 pm. Coin laundry downstairs. Free coffee (good) and toast in the lobby for breakfast. The hotel is very close to the canal area. Overall I would stay here again, but don't rely on the hotel staff for local knowledge.

Nostalgic Hotel!
Otaru itself was a letdown due to the overwhelming amount of pest-like tourists. Canal was outrageously over-rated as it looks like a regular river. I admit there's a lot of shops & restaurants around the area, but you can feel the prices and quality are targeted towards tourists. Location - We picked this hotel since it's really near to the Canal. There are some buildings of attractions around the hotel, and also a lot of restaurants around the Canal. However, it's quite a distance from Otaru Station. We have 2x60L backpacks, and took us about 30 minutes to walk during slippery & snowy winter. Hotel - classic hotel that felt really good. Service was ok, They have really simple free breakfast that only consists of toast and coffee, and probably instant soup. That's all. Room - size was small. Table was weirdly positioned at the corner which literally blocked the pathway to the window. The TV was positioned so high up the wall that it's difficult to raise your head and watch. Wi-Fi was inconsistent. Our connections got cut off quite a number of times. The toilet shower has an ever-changing water temperature when I was bathing.
