We decided to try a not so touristy Fale on our last night in Samoa. It had been raining a lot and on arrival, having to dodge huge puddles to enter the compound, and faced with a bedraggled looking tree house fale and mangrove environment, my heart sank. Guests sleep in open walled Samoan fales, so be prepared for a different experience, but one with many attractions. Owner/manager Cort and his helpful Samoan colleagues are ll developing the site, so you can watch Samoan builders skillfully erect tree-houses and walkways to the pleasantly bushed site under the beautiful baobab tree, palms and tree ferns […] over the clear water of the lagoon.. Barking dogs and roosters woke us occasionally, but we slept comfortably and woke to watch an elegant heron catch his breakfast fish at our doorstep. Meals (and the bottles of Vailima beer) are large. The menu and service are basic(eg boiled egg, fresh local fruit, toast and tea for breakfast) but meals are well cooked and delivered with a smile to the restaurant fale which has electric lighting. Conversation with other guests was wide ranging and good fun. Cort and family and colleagues love to talk about the Gardens, Samoan life and swimming, kayaking and generally exploring the lagoons, seashore,bush and villages. They will take you wherever you need to go. The resort could do with somewhere more comfortable to relax,or read and attention to details like cleaning the kerosene lamps - some pressure Tilley lamps would help. Overall, we recommend Mangrove Gardens to eco/adventurous travellers or those wanting an experience of Samoan life with welcoming hosts. When another tree fale and a tidal pool (now under construction)have been completed this will be a delightful place to stay. Read more

The Mangrove Gardens was an awesome place to stay. I know staying literally at a beach is very appealing, but staying in a Mangrove was far better (Beside you have perfect beaches a short jungle walk away). Kurt and his family who runs the place are very friendly and helpful and it is easy to get around the island. I would recommend a rental car though. […] Yes there are mosquitos, but if you got a repellent that shouldn't be a problem, and the mosquito nets provided are great. The food is amazing fish tempura is just perfect. The only thing is that they could have provided a new towel every once in a while, but I never asked for one neither. All in all this place is a sure win. Just remember to go kayaking in the mangroves! Read more
