Riu Palace Peninsula All Inclusive - Cancun

When we booked, the Riu Palace Peninsula was mid market in price in comparison to others in the Hotel Zone. That being said, it provided an excellent value for our stay. All of the services and amenities were great. It didn't have the 'over the top' wow factor to get a '5' rating from me, but overall it was great. Very friendly & helpful staff. We put some of the alcohol from the room in the freezer & it ended up freezing solid, so might want to check yours as well (i.e. alcohol is watered down a bit). It was wonderful and the upgrade made our short stay outstanding at the Peninsula junior suites. Food was great. The service of the various staff on the property was friendly and very attentive. We have always enjoyed the Riu Resorts and this one was outstanding. Cannot wait to try your other properties. Will definitely recommend it to others!

The hotel and grounds are beautifully maintained. The staff are friendly and prompt, very helpful. The reason for the 3 rating overall is that all the great things about this hotel were dragged down by the food. The Japanese restaurant served mediocre sushi (we have had much better in Omaha NE!) and the tempura shrimp had the sort of breading usually […] seen on coconut shrimp - but no coconut and certainly whatever it was, it was not tempura. The beef was tough and overcooked. We walked out in search of an edible meal. The same story at the Steak House - medium rare was brown, the ribeye was gristly - I would expect a 5 star hotel could deliver a steak that was at least the match of Outback. The Italian restaurant, however, was devine. The breakfast buffet was alsogenerous with all types of good foods. I felt let down because I expected much better and because it is all-inclusive, you are stuck there for meals and it is an important part of the experience. The beach is lovely as are the pools. The room was very comfortable although would have benefitted by a light on the balcony for reading after dark. Also a bit odd was the jacuzzi tub - unenclosed and sitting out in the middle of the room. Do not buy tours at the hotel - you can get the same things for half the cost downtown. Read more

It was much worse that what I thought. The toilet does not flush. I wanted to make a reservation for dinner at the restaurant and was told I had to make reservation two days ahead. The decoration of the room is very disappointed. This wouldn't be a three star hotel. The pool was good though. Do not recommend. Very very disappointed.

The hotel was very nice didn't feel or look like your average "Mexican hotel" the food was decent, the rooms were spacious however if you get a room with double beds do not expect to sleep 2 people in the bed.. My few complaints aside from the size of the double beds are the coffee shop doesn't open til 10am, the pools were freezing they do not heat them after February, my kids could not swim the entire vacation, the ocean was warmer then the pools. The beach was very rocky only a small area with sand that led to the water and it was filled with seaweed, nothing like any of the other hotels I've stayed in prior in Cancun which had amazing beaches. Arrived at the hotel and were welcomed with a cool non-alcoholic juice. The front desk was very nice and upgraded our room to a partial ocean view. We read about the difficulty of getting reservations so we proceeded to make reservations for dinner at the customer service desk. The customer service lady was not very happy to be working. It was like […] pulling teeth to get info on reservations and reservation times. We had to eat at the buffet for the 1st night because all the reservations were taken. The room was very clean and new looking. The mini bar is literally a lock box dispenser where you can dispense shots of rum, vodka,tequila etc. (no mini bottles) The bed was very hard.(reminded me of my old college bed) The linens were very standard(no plush comforters here) The view was beautiful. The balcony chairs and table are your standard plastic white chairs. The room service menu is very very basic. The buffet was best for breakfast; the lunch and dinner buffet is edible. The reservations for the dining resturants are overrated. The food is small but service is good and Krystal has nice decor. The all inclusive band is an ER wristband that must be worn the entire trip(annoying). The clubs are between $50-70 so be prepared. The cab rides are about $12. DO NOT LOSE YOUR CUSTOMS CARD GIVEN TO YOU ON THE PLANE WHEN YOU ARRIVE. You will miss your flight home! I stayed at the 5 star Excellence Playa Mujeres last time. Very nice hotel, friendly staff, nice facilities. We were in the villas and Internet was slow and weak. Kept getting booted off. Rooms did not have a lot of privacy in the room. My boyfriend and I recently stayed at this resort for 3 nights. Overall, here are the pros and cons of the Riu Palace Peninsula: Pros: It was built in 2012, which means that everything is new and very clean. You can check in prior to the official 3PM check-in time and start enjoying the pool and beverage services immediately. Most of the guests were […] adults, which I appreciated. No offense to people with kids- but I don't have kids and I want a vacation experience with no screaming babies in the pool next to me. There were a few families there with small children, but the place had more of an adult vibe. Cons: You have to book restaurant reservations once you arrive onsite, and most are booked 3 days out already. With that said, it is common for guests to hang out near one of the restaurants at a seating time (6:30pm or 8:00pm) and try to get in if someone with a reservation never shows. Breakfast and lunch are buffets only. I booked a Jr. Villa Suite and would highly recommend this option for the following reasons: 1) The villas are in a "VIP area" separate from the main building and you are more isolated from the masses that are staying at the resort (no children are allowed in the villas). 2) The villas give you exclusive access to a VIP infinity pool and sunbathing area- you never had to search for an umbrella and chaises to lounge in. 3) The villas give you access to a VIP restaurant that was far easier to book reservations for than the other restaurants onsite. This place has fantastic service. If you ask for 2extra towels in your room, they'll bring you 5. If you would like 1 bottle of water, they'll bring you two. This hotel goes above & beyond. This was kind of difficult because a couple times, & different times in the day, we walked into the cleaning staff or we needed to call to have our room cleaned. Despite this, when we did call, the room was cleaned immediately. 2. Our room was right above the main stage where they have evening entertainment. 3. The crowd was a little older than what I expected. 4. It's a bit further from the center of the hotel zone where the clubs/malls are (the bus - & yes it's safe - costs 1USD though or cabs are about 150 pesos#. If you stay here, you also to use all amenities at any of the other Riu Hotels in the hotel zone for free. A few people we met at the hotel said that the other Riu Hotels in the Cancun Hotel Zone don't compare to the Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula. All in All - the people are nice, the food is alright & there's tons of it #and if you are a vegetarian you will be able to to survive here - plenty of options, take it from me) & the activities are fun & there are plenty of them. We stayed in Villa Jr. suite and it had a Jacuzzi in balcony with the ocean view. We found that all villa suites are considered as VIP and had extra privileges such as VIP only pool and restaurant. The first room we checked in, water drainage was poor in shower. So, we’ve asked to switch the room and they were glad to do it for us. They moved us to […] the third floor with the better view. Refrigerator was always filled with water, soda and beer. Room cleaning service came about twice a day. So, if you don’t want to be bothered at evening, make sure you have the sign outside. The food was fantastic. They had lobster at the buffet bar on every Thursday. Also, any drink (wines, cocktails, juices, soda, coffee), deserts and fruits were always available. Snack was always available at sports bar if we got hungry late at night. Also, other restaurants could be reserved for dinner (Italian, Japanese, Fusion, Mexican , Steakhouse). Especially, the VIP only restaurant, Kulinary, had awesome food and service. RIU Palace Peninsula offered variety of activities for kids and adults from yoga, aqua aerobics and shows at night. We have stayed at the Riu Palace Las Americas three times and it is our favorite Cancun hotel. This trip it was not available so stayed at the Peninsula, it is a beautiful hotel, and has a much larger beach area. It is also a much larger hotel, and the decor very modern. The decor was very very basic, with only a very small couch that appeared to be made of cheap wood with cushions, and a basic table. It was all white with fake wood. The bed was hard. The most unusual thing, and it has been commented on a lot, is the bathtub in the middle of the room! There is a total lack of privacy in these rooms. The shower is lovely, though. The hallways are LOUD, and hot! The food was just okay, the buffet, typical buffet food. It became boring pretty quickly. The Italian restaurant was good. We also tried the Mexican restaurant and also just okay. The standout in this hotel,however, was the service!! It was always excellent. From the buffet staff to the beach staff, always helpful and pleasant. Overall, not my favorite, but I would come back as I like the beaches in this area (they are much calmer and swimmable). Celebrated my husbands 30th birthday mid November. The hotel was TOO modern for our taste, did not feel like we were in Mexico; however it was a 4.5 star. Food was great, plenty choices... The balconies are not private and small, GREAT ocean view. 24hr room service was a joke, only juice, coffee, salad, and a few sandwiches... When I called for hot breakfast, I was politely told to go to the buffet... sooo I went for breakfast, had it sent to the room... by the time it got there it was cold, had to call back to room service for juice/which took 30mins. The soaking tub was not comfortable for 2 :(. Was surprised that bed comforter were fleece, was expecting down in such an extravagant hotel. Very few English channels. Free WIFI :). Near shops and city bus(only $1USD and 24h). The hotel staff made a towel cake and filled the bed with balloons the night before my husbands birthday and left a bottle of tequila and a nice note the day of... Very nice touch :)...
