Trapp Family Lodge - Monteverde

This is the closest you can stay to Monte Verde. It is away from the hubbub of town, but still close enough to go to the shops, restaurants, and excursions. We loved the glassed in balcony in the mahogany lined room. The staff here was friendly and helpful, the food was delicious!

This place is drop dead gorgeous. The rooms were gorgeous. This is not the place to stay if you want to stay in your room and watch TV though! No one does that when the visit Costa Rica anyway so no problem there. Incredibly friendly staff, secure and safe as well. The staff went out of their way. They are incredibly courteous and helpful. The restaurant is a bit more expensive than going into Santa Elena - which isn't far if you have a car. The rooms were nice.

Our stay was in November, at the end of the green season. We reserved a room in the main lodge, but were upgraded to the newer, upper building with a garden view. The room was very clean, spacious, and attractively decorated. It had large picture windows that opened to the patio and garden beyond. The two comfort issues we had were: 1) the shower was clean, beautiful and modern, but had poor water pressure; 2) the entry door to the room opens to a patio/garden area, and was very squeaky during a windy night. We propped a nearby chair against the door to make it more quiet, which worked well. As other reviews have said, be aware that there is no heat, and the hotel is high up the mountainside. We had particularly rainy, windy weather one or two days when we were there, so we were slightly chilled. There were extra blankets for the bed already in the room, which we used. Overall, it is a very beautiful, well-kept hotel, a little out of town, and up on the hillside. If that is what you're looking for, this is a great place to stay. For families: our 3 year old daughter was with us. She had fun on the walkway up to our room, and there were several good kids channels on the satellite TV. Read more

We thought the Trapp Family Lodge was a nice, economical place to stay. The staff were all very friendly and helpful at all times. The restaurant meals were very convenient and reasonably priced. We would stay there again on our next trip to Monteverde.

We stayed at several hotels in Costa Rica and this one was definitely remote, but then again, Monteverde is very remote. We were there for only one night, but the accommodations were acceptable for the area. Nothing fancy, but beautiful grounds. In Monteverde rainforest, Trapp is a wood-paneled inn. Clean and comfortable room w/2 queens was spacious enough for our teen & 2 adults. We stayed in the main building and ate breakfasts and dinners in the hotel:the food is really great & our family loved the "Aztec soup". Nice views from our room over the rainforest. 3km away from the downtown area with unpaved road, but only 1.5km from the forest. The room is big but no air condition/heat and refrigerator. It does get cold at night, but we were there around July. The restaurant is very good. Booking tours was a breeze.

Lodge was a little difficult to find. Front desk were friendly and helpful and scheduled our tour. Room was comfortable, but no AC since we like it cold (a fan would have helped). If your a light sleeper, the sounds of the forest may keep you up, since you need to keep the windows open for air circulation. Wonderful meal. Very helpful. Beautiful grounds. Very noisy winds but that comes with Monteverdi aand felt safe and secure tucked away in our room watching the trees wave from our massive window. The flea redwood floors in the room were so beautifully polished you could slide on them! Very far up the hill but worth the trip

We got the mountain view room. We stayed at Trapp Family Lodge for 3 nights but on the 3rd night we had to move rooms to the regular room because the water wasn't working in our room. We didn't get a credit for moving to the cheaper room. The room we got inside the lodge was a lot louder (you could hear people through the walls) and had no safety box. […] None of the rooms had fridges in them. There was no laundry facility in the lodge you would have to send your clothes out to get cleaned. The food was good in the lodge. We liked everything we ordered. The staff helped us plan a tour and ordered taxi's whenever we needed. most of the staff were friendly. If I could do it over I would have rented a room in Santa Elena to be closer to the restaurants and stores in town as we only went to the Monteverde cloud reserve once and to Santa Elena every day so there was no point for us in staying close to the reserve. Plus the bugs and birds were quite loud at night and in the mornings so you had a hard time sleeping in if you wanted and it was chilly on top of that. Read more
