Hotel Tozankaku, Kyoto
Outstanding5.0 / 5
Six of us stayed in three twin 'western' rooms (which do have bath & shower). Small, but clean. 2 comfortble medium-hard beds, windows that open. We all slept well. Lots of veg available at breakfast! General location is good, and a nice temple across the street, but no evening action or 'happening' restaurants in the immediate vicinity. Staff speak English and gave us some help planning our itenerary.

Great value
I spent four nights at Tozankaku and greatly enjoyed my stay. It is not a new hotel and the some of the features look a litle outdated. However, it is well kept and the staff was very helpful. The hotel caters mostly to Japanese guests and small Chinese/Taiwanese tours so very little English is spoken (one of the female clecks at the desk speaks English well and is very helpful). I stayed in a western style room (they have Japanese style rooms) and since they put me at the end of the corridor it was very quite. There are signs all over the hotel telling people not to smoke, but I did catch the occasional wiff though...I guess that it is hard the habit of hardcore Japanese and Chinese smokers. Breakfast was included in the price (mostly Japanese style which is ok with me) which made the price that I paid extrmely good value. The hotel is located in the Eastern part of town which is convenient to explore some of the most famous temple on foot. However, the nearest subway station is about a 15 minute walk from the hotel. I am an avid walker so that is not a problem for me, but it may be for others. One of the greatest features of the hotel is the public bath (there are actually two, one for men and one for women, so they don't need to alternate times like in some other hotels) which was kind of "old style", but again spotlessly clean and a wonderful place to relax after a long day of visiting.

Great location
We loved the position and that the hotel was visited mainly by Japanese guests. Several bus lines stopped right at the entrance and the coffee shop served a nice buffet lunch for a good price. The room was very spacy and the staff very friendly and helpful. We had a flask with hot water, green tea and some sweets served complemantary each day. The bathroom was newly renovated andalso spacy. We enjoyed our stay very much.

Japanese style hotel with character
Great location. Nice for the experience of traditional Japanese accommodations and Japanese public bath. Futons were very comfortable.

convenient, but Japanese style room had no shower
The hotel is in a great location. There are a lot of tour groups staying there because it is a good deal. We enjoyed staying in our Japanese style room, but our daughters were horrified that the room had no bath or shower. The only option was to use the public bath. As a result, they did not bathe for the duration of our stay.
