"Nice room, great breakfast, but what a lumpy bed"
We stayed in the family room, and it was plenty big enough for four. Everything was pretty clean and tidy. The room was directly above the pub bar, this could have been a noise issue but this is a quiet suburban place so it wasn't (at least the friday we were there). It also meant we could head downstairs for a drink after a long days sightseeing leaving […] the kids safely upstairs. Very pleasant traditional bar with hand pulled beers. The breakfast was full english and cooked to order, with as much toast and teas as you can drink. Excellent, set you up for the whole day. However, its silly the little things that can spoil a stay - the mattress in our bed was so lumpy it made sleeping difficult. If that were resolved this would be a solid 4 star review. "Great bar but rooms a bit scruffy"
After a long day travelling I was a bit disappointed by my room. The TV was stuck on ITV3 and I couldnt get it to work. That said I thought the barman/receptionist was very friendly and helpful, and the steak for dinner was lovely. Sadly the room wasn't great so I will be searching around for an alternative next time Im in the Durham area.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Know your bus route"
This hotel was a bargain, just a bit out of the way. There is a bus that goes from downtown Durham directly to the hotel for a very reasonable rate. The bus station is two blocks from the train station. The room was small but comfortable and clean. The breakfast was tasty and generous. The pub serves great local ale. Be warned, there is no one there […] from about 10 in the morning until 2 p.m. check-in time in the afternoon, so make arrangements ahead of time for check-in. "VERY OUTDATED WITH A DAMP FUSTY SMELL THROUGHOUT"
We were very shocked when we were shown to our room, it was very old fashioned with paper peeling from the walls and spider webs hanging for the ceiling and throughout the room, there was a rickety wardrobe which had a disgraceful amount of dust on top, tbh dust was very visible throughout the room and on skirting boards etc, the bathroom wasn't clean […] with a broken bath panel a sink and shelf above which was tilting downwards where nothing could sit on without it falling into the sink, body hairs were also visible around the sink area to our disgust, if that wasn't bad enough when going to bed the beds felt very cold and damp and this stopped us having a good nights sleep as it was so uncomfortable cold and damp I think the owners fail to keep the room sufficiently heated and this is the result. How this hotel has a 3 star rating is beyond me it is badly in need of a refurbishment and overhaul throughout to rid it of the rancid smell and overall poor conditions within the hotel and bar area. Despite it clearly stating " Public areas are equipped with complimentary high-speed wireless Internet access." we never manage to connect to it just an error from the Hotel Network I would not board an animal to stay at this hotel let along take my family into it again, it was more like a homeless hostel than a hotel Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Not bad, could be better."
A lovely pub set in the countryside. The rooms were ok. We had a family room and the beds were comfy. There was a big tv in the room with great sound. There was a bath and a shower in the bath room too. There were some niggly things, the weather was cold for summer, August 2014 especially when it was night time. This meant that the room was cold and […] the heating did not work. The kitchen taps needed changing, one would not turn off properly. Overall we stayed here for a decent price and we enjoyed our stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

I thought we were staying get in the pub but the accommodation was like 2 houses adjoined to it. The staff in the pub were very friendly. The room was very dated . "No sleep for us!"
The hotel is well located, and reasonably priced. While the rooms are a little worn, they are clean and adequately equipped. The evening staff were helpful. The problem was the noise. I had read about that in some other reviews so called when I booked and was told that there was no event planned that evening so all would be fine. There was no event […] as far as we could see, but there was a lock in which lasted until about 3am, with associated bass boom of music and singing. None of us got any sleep! No staff responded to the on-going disturbances between mid night and 2:30am caused by two adults. It was left to a guest to call the police to resolve the situation. Although a note was placed under the door at about 3am from the management, this was totally inadequate.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Easy access to Durham centre"
Pleasant pub B&B with friendly staff. It's a bit outside Durham, but there are frequent buses that stop pretty much directly outside and take less than 10 mins into the city centre. Hotel breakfast is generous and the coffee satisfyingly thick and strong.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This inn is 2 stars because the food was good, and the place was clean somehow. It looked nice but rather shabby, there were no toiletries in the en suite. The inn is not near any shops or restaurants. There was no internet and no room service. The television was just a radio: a screen-it was not working. The bed that my daughter slept next to had a […] radiator that was boiling hot and the room was stifling. It was a restless night of fitful sleep, for the bar downstairs were constantly laughing and talking and we could hear it quite clearly and outside there were a fair amount of cars and sirens. On the other hand, the food was quite good, and the prices very satisfying but the water was expensive. Breakfast was the same (but included in the price of your stay), but the process of giving us the food was very slow as there was only one waitress. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The reception was pleasant enough. But we found the room to be less than spotless. It was clean, but there were corners of dust, the central lampshade covered in it, etc. The bed was too short for me (I am 1.85 m). The breakfast was OK but again not outstanding. No fresh fruit on offer. We had our dinner as well. Also that nothing to write home about. […] All in all, given that we were a family of 3 adults wishing to have just the one room, we didn't have much choice given the short notice we had to book it and for where we need to be the next day it was perfectly located. In the same situation a next time, we may consider staying here again, but we're sure there are better alternatives to be found. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Not as advertised"
The room was not like the picture and certainly not value for money.Food in restaurant was the only high light. Durham is actually a ten minute drive away, this Inn is on the out skirts in the suburb of Pity Me.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I found that the room was basic and I was relieved I took shampoo and soap with me. The bathroom carpet smelled of urine and the overall cleanliness was disappointing. I went for a meal in the restaurant to be told that most of the menu was not available. I asked for a drink and was told I needed to go and get one myself from the bar. I had just literally […] put my last mouthful of food in and was chewing as my plate was taken from in front of me. There were not enough sockets in the room, so could either have the television on, or boil the kettle, have the lamp on or plug my phone in to charge. Overall, taking into account the cost, I guess I should not have expected more. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
We arrived to a friendly welcome and the pub itself was what you would expect from such an old pub.Our room though was a little disapointing,it didn't have any charm of an old building and looked like it had been quite a while since it was decorated. It was a shame because it was a good size family room just not a very cosy or welcoming room.It just […] needs new wallpaper and cosier bedding. "Lambton Hounds - October 2014"
10/29/14 Andrew2206 Sheffield, United Kingdom
Used this hotel as a base for visiting Beamish for a day and Durham for the next. First impressions of the Lambton Hounds at Pity Me: the place was easy to find, the furnishings appeared a little dated but clean nonetheless, the Pub is fine if you just need a good value room and food for a night or two. The staff were helpful and despite previous reviewers, we were made welcome by the pub regulars. Our room was OK - clean, warm and tidy, a comfortable double bed, en-suite etc. The bathroom could really have done with a re-grout and re-silicone around the bath - same for the shower hose… In the bar for a beer or two but was somewhat disappointed in the quality of the real ale, and told the guy that served me. Perhaps they don’t serve enough to turn it over properly? I thought perhaps both the beers I tried were from near the bottom of the barrel. In the restaurant we had our evening meals. Meals were very good both nights. The service was not perfect but, for the numbers that were dining, more than acceptable! Only one young girl taking orders and serving both food and drinks meant that the service might have seemed slow for anyone in a rush. We considered eating out on the second night but could find no different alternative in the vicinity so we were happy to make use of the restaurant again. Highlight of the stay were the breakfasts; very well made, very good service and great coffee. As mentioned in an earlier review, there's no getting away from the fact this is a pub with rooms, so maybe not for everyone. I felt that the positives outweighed the few niggles that I might have had about the place. Last point, we found it very handy for the nearby park and ride service into Durham City centre. You can park your vehicle for FREE when using the Park and Ride bus service and a Day Ticket (unlimited travel including transfer between any of the Park and Ride buses) is only £2.00 Overall would have rated the hotel as good - somewhere between the "average" and "very good" that Trip Advisor use to rate properties.

Stayed here, with the wife, for three nights very recently. First impressions were good and I didn't note a hint of any animosity from the locals, that others state exist at this establishment. Our room was fine - clean, warm and tidy, a double and a single bed + en suite etc. TV was a shade awkward due to a faulty Freeview box, but we soon sorted this out. Down to the restaurant for evening meal. Score here, extremely good - in fact excellent. I had Lamb with trimmings, onion rings and chips and which was exquisite, followed this up with an ice cream. The service was second to none, the lady in question being as naturally pleasant as its possible to be but more than this, she is a great looking lass and her smile is --- well, wow ! Into the bar for a few beers whereby I sampled at least half a dozen pints of Lambton Pale Ale (to be recommended). Whilst drinking all this, we soon had the company of a few local guys with wives etc and whom were very good company (who said these guys are unfriendly - what rubbish). Ok, the decor in the main bar room possibly needs sprucing up, but when one considers "this is a real pub of over two hundred and fifty years" it sort of fits (if you know what I mean). Tappas on Thursday evening in the restaurant - a new one on me but it was pretty good. Anyway, the bus leaves almost outside, destinations to Durham or Newcastle, neither are a huge distance away. I am pleased to recommend this establishment onwards, but moreso to those whom like "real pubs" We will certainly stay here again, I loved it !
"Pity Me is the name of the area, near Durham."
09/01/14 Tricia G North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
The pub/inn is on the road side and parking is available. There's nothing much else in the area and it is quite a few miles to Durham so transport is needed. The pub is tired and in need of refurbishing. The bedroom was extremely shabby with dated and damaged decorations and everything appeared old, mismatched or damaged; it was clean though. The breakfast tables were sticky and not at all appealing. We booked online and the address said Durham, not Pity Me, so we didn't realise we were staying so far out of town or in this particular location.
"Simple B&B, does the job."
We were passing through Durham visiting a friend and only chose this place based on it being very close to where they lived - it's a bit out of town, but nothing a taxi can't handle. The staff were professional and helpful and there's no getting away from the fact this is a pub with rooms, so maybe not for everyone. But we love a bit of quirkiness. The room was extremely dated, with massive CRT telly and anaglypta wallpaper - fortunately we love that kind of thing. Dinner was available in the pub that night (tapas) but we had other plans. The breakfast the next morning, however, was fantastic. Very well made, and very good service. The Lambton is perfect if you just need a good value place for the night. It was also very good value, although we got a good deal because we booked last minute - it was all done online though, which was very convenient too.
"Not great for as a B&B"
06/26/14 Travelin-beans Beaverton, Oregon
Local pub with an attached annex of rooms. The rooms were outdated, cleanliness was in question. However, the bar area was fine, good selection, food was ok, service was great though. The back patio area needs some work, not as advertised in previous photos. I would not recommend this for a b&b stay, however for drinks and watching a match would be just fine.
"OK for locals"
05/26/14 TheTwoOfUsSuffolk Suffolk
During our three night stay at the Premier Inn just down the road, we decided to eat here on our first night. First impression from outside - looked ok. Stepped inside - locals all turned round to see who was coming in - bit off-putting Dining room only had three tables occupied prior to the three of us coming in, four other people came in after us. Only one young girl taking orders and serving both food and drinks which meant that the service was very slow. Our main courses were ok however the sticky toffee puddings (2 out of our three desserts) were rubbery and the custard tasted like it had been watered down. Just looked back on their website. Interesting reading. They ask for feedback on their 'New Website' which shows their "2010 - 2013 Winner - Taste Durham" quality assured spoon logo and beside it you can view their "2013 Food Menu" All in all 3 star Inn with 3 star quality food and service. Time to update website, menu and service standards for 2014

The room was very small and very dated. The staff were very helpful and the room seemed clean. The location wasn't great couldn't get a cab to Durham to save my life and it was too far to walk. Won't be going back.
"slow service in a quiet restaurant"
04/27/14 traceya89 durham, england
went on living social deal but hardly anyone in restaurant and service very slow. we arrived at 1.10 and were abruptly told there was no way we could go into the "restaurant" before 130 so we sat til 130 and were annoyed that people who had come in after us were allowed in the restaurant before us even though they were sitting in the bar too waiting patiently for 130. the restaurant appeared quite dated, although some may think this adds to the charm of the old pub. there was not much selection for the starters or the dessert. we had the pate and the combo which were ok, not lush and not horrible. the beef dinner was nice, the yorkshire pudding was nice and the vegetables were plentiful. the main course was nice but could have been hotter. had the pineapple upside down cake and custard for dessert, was not that nice but as i said not much of a selection. we sat and waited for the bill (even though we did not owe anything , just thought it the courteous thing to do) but in the end we just left as no one came and asked if we had enjoyed the food. very much doubt we will be back. staff not attentive and service slow. food average.
"Extremely pleasant place!"
03/28/14 casestudy Warsaw, Poland
I spent just one night in Lambdon Hounds Inn but it was a very pleasant stay. Single room I booked was the cheapest I could find in the whole area (38 pounds) and I was surprised by how cosy it felt. There was a bathtub, very much appreciated as I could take a long bath after walking all day.The pub itself looked typically English, with low ceilings, warm light and wooden panels. For breakfast there was a selection of cereals, toasts and cooked breakfast made at request. Coffee was really good and staff was friendly, so I would highly reccommend this place as it's a great value for money. The Inn is 40 minutes walk from railway station and less than an hour walk from Durham cathedral. There are also many takeaway Indian and Asian restaurants on the way to the city centre.
