The room was small but charming, in an older building. Not luxurious by any stretch, but exactly what I was looking for and at a good price. My one complaint would be that the street noise was rather loud. The owner was very nice and helpful, and the food at the restaurant was outstanding. I would recommend it to anybody, with the caveat regarding traffic noise.

We stayed in the family room, and it was plenty big enough for four. Everything was pretty clean and tidy. The room was directly above the pub bar, this could have been a noise issue but this is a quiet suburban place so it wasn't (at least the friday we were there). It also meant we could head downstairs for a drink after a long days sightseeing leaving the kids safely upstairs. Very pleasant traditional bar with hand pulled beers. The breakfast was full english and cooked to order, with as much toast and teas as you can drink. Excellent, set you up for the whole day. However, its silly the little things that can spoil a stay - the mattress in our bed was so lumpy it made sleeping difficult. If that were resolved this would be a solid 4 star review.

After a long day travelling I was a bit disappointed by my room. The TV was stuck on ITV3 and I couldnt get it to work. That said I thought the barman/receptionist was very friendly and helpful, and the steak for dinner was lovely. Sadly the room wasn't great so I will be searching around for an alternative next time Im in the Durham area.

This hotel was a bargain, just a bit out of the way. There is a bus that goes from downtown Durham directly to the hotel for a very reasonable rate. The bus station is two blocks from the train station. The room was small but comfortable and clean. The breakfast was tasty and generous. The pub serves great local ale. Be warned, there is no one there from about 10 in the morning until 2 p.m. check-in time in the afternoon, so make arrangements ahead of time for check-in.

We had just enjoyed a week's holiday in Scotland and our stay at this pub was to break the return journey. There are probably better rooms at the inn (indeed there were quite a few people at breakfast - maybe their experience was different), but the room reserved for us was so tiny and ill-conceived that my wife, who does not easily get flustered, was reduced to fighting back tears. Other factual detail? There was an 'ensuite', but the sliding door neither fully closed (about a 3cm gap) nor locked. The toilet did not flush on first usage and we had to use a kettle of water to complete the process. The main radiator was buried behind the bed-head - its heating effect was nullified. Breakfast was adequate - cereal and milk, orange juice, coffee and a full English - 1 rasher of bacon, 1 sausage, 1 hash brown, half a slice of fried bread and an egg - there may have been beans also, but we asked for these to be missed off. We could not wait to leave and get home - never felt quite like that before!

One night stay with two friends. Was expecting to stay in a room above the pub area and not in an attached house which required us to go outside to get to room and back. However, the pub itself was interesting and staff very accommodating. The room was basic but needs updating but that did not affect our stay. Would book again

Smelled damp as we walked in yhe radiator was turned off at both ends and the room had black mould in the corner and sthe room felt damp and cold. It took over an hour to get any heating and with the room being so cold took all night for the room to heat up and we had to usean extra blanket. We went to ghe restaurant but the heating was not on yhere either. The shower was poor and the water in the bath was not warm enough to have a bath. The breakfast was Good We will not be returning

Used as a base for visiting Beamish and Durham. Easy to find, a little dated but clean nonetheless. Good value room and food for a night or two. Our room was OK - clean, warm and tidy, a comfortable double bed, en-suite etc. The bathroom could really have done with an update. Disappointed in the quality of the real ale, and told the guy that served me. Maybe both beers I tried were from near the bottom of the barrel. Evening meals were very good both nights. The service was not perfect but, for the numbers that were dining, more than acceptable! Perhaps seemed slow for anyone in a rush. Highlight of the stay were the breakfasts; very well made, very good service and great coffee. Very handy for the nearby park and ride into Durham City centre. You can park your vehicle for FREE when using the Park and Ride bus service and a Day Ticket only £2.00

We were very shocked when we were shown to our room, it was very old fashioned with paper peeling from the walls and spider webs hanging for the ceiling and throughout the room, there was a rickety wardrobe which had a disgraceful amount of dust on top, tbh dust was very visible throughout the room and on skirting boards etc, the bathroom wasn't clean with a broken bath panel a sink and shelf above which was tilting downwards where nothing could sit on without it falling into the sink, body hairs were also visible around the sink area to our disgust, if that wasn't bad enough when going to bed the beds felt very cold and damp and this stopped us having a good nights sleep as it was so uncomfortable cold and damp I think the owners fail to keep the room sufficiently heated and this is the result. How this hotel has a 3 star rating is beyond me it is badly in need of a refurbishment and overhaul throughout to rid it of the rancid smell and overall poor conditions within the hotel and bar area. Despite it clearly stating " Public areas are equipped with complimentary high-speed wireless Internet access." we never manage to connect to it just an error from the Hotel Network I would not board an animal to stay at this hotel let along take my family into it again, it was more like a homeless hostel than a hotel

A lovely pub set in the countryside. The rooms were ok. We had a family room and the beds were comfy. There was a big tv in the room with great sound. There was a bath and a shower in the bath room too. There were some niggly things, the weather was cold for summer, August 2014 especially when it was night time. This meant that the room was cold and the heating did not work. The kitchen taps needed changing, one would not turn off properly. Overall we stayed here for a decent price and we enjoyed our stay.

I thought we were staying get in the pub but the accommodation was like 2 houses adjoined to it. The staff in the pub were very friendly. The room was very dated . The light fitting had not been dusted for years. The extractor fan in the bathroom was covered in cobwebs. The furniture looked tired and the smell in the hallway leading to the room w a s musty. We e had great problems closing the room door. We would not stay here again.

The hotel is well located, and reasonably priced. While the rooms are a little worn, they are clean and adequately equipped. The evening staff were helpful. The problem was the noise. I had read about that in some other reviews so called when I booked and was told that there was no event planned that evening so all would be fine. There was no event as far as we could see, but there was a lock in which lasted until about 3am, with associated bass boom of music and singing. None of us got any sleep!

No staff responded to the on-going disturbances between mid night and 2:30am caused by two adults. It was left to a guest to call the police to resolve the situation. Although a note was placed under the door at about 3am from the management, this was totally inadequate.

This inn is 2 stars because the food was good, and the place was clean somehow. It looked nice but rather shabby, there were no toiletries in the en suite. The inn is not near any shops or restaurants. There was no internet and no room service. The television was just a radio: a screen-it was not working. The bed that my daughter slept next to had a radiator that was boiling hot and the room was stifling. It was a restless night of fitful sleep, for the bar downstairs were constantly laughing and talking and we could hear it quite clearly and outside there were a fair amount of cars and sirens. On the other hand, the food was quite good, and the prices very satisfying but the water was expensive. Breakfast was the same (but included in the price of your stay), but the process of giving us the food was very slow as there was only one waitress.

The reception was pleasant enough. But we found the room to be less than spotless. It was clean, but there were corners of dust, the central lampshade covered in it, etc. The bed was too short for me (I am 1.85 m). The breakfast was OK but again not outstanding. No fresh fruit on offer. We had our dinner as well. Also that nothing to write home about. All in all, given that we were a family of 3 adults wishing to have just the one room, we didn't have much choice given the short notice we had to book it and for where we need to be the next day it was perfectly located. In the same situation a next time, we may consider staying here again, but we're sure there are better alternatives to be found.

I found that the room was basic and I was relieved I took shampoo and soap with me. The bathroom carpet smelled of urine and the overall cleanliness was disappointing. I went for a meal in the restaurant to be told that most of the menu was not available. I asked for a drink and was told I needed to go and get one myself from the bar. I had just literally put my last mouthful of food in and was chewing as my plate was taken from in front of me. There were not enough sockets in the room, so could either have the television on, or boil the kettle, have the lamp on or plug my phone in to charge. Overall, taking into account the cost, I guess I should not have expected more.

We arrived to a friendly welcome and the pub itself was what you would expect from such an old pub.Our room though was a little disapointing,it didn't have any charm of an old building and looked like it had been quite a while since it was decorated. It was a shame because it was a good size family room just not a very cosy or welcoming room.It just needs new wallpaper and cosier bedding.

Frukost ok. Bor gärna här igen. En smak av regionala England.

"Average stay"

Stayed for 2 nights. The description of this place as a historic coaching inn over romanticises in my opinion. A better description would be pub in a mining village with rooms. Good bits: Nice breakfast. Cooked fresh with fresh coffee and good service. Also reasonable price £59 per night b&b. Bad bits: Pub decor is tired and old fashioned. Musty smell in the hall. Expensive drinks £3.80 pint of strongbow when I pay only £3.50 tops in Newcastle City. No room to move in room, tiny bathroom, double and single squashed in room. Plug sockets difficult to access for hairdryer. Useful info: £6-9 taxi each way to Durham Bus stop across road only £1.50-70 single on bus. All busses stop at Durham City bus station. We didn't try the food but seemed reasonable. They had a band on the Saturday night but we went out due to drinks prices. Would I stay again? Doubtful but it did for a cheap base for a weekend away.

"Pity me for staying here"

We only came to Durham to go to beamish. As soon as we got there the man wanted the money and hadn't shown us our room. He took us to our room and didn't ask how far we'd come/ safe journey/ have a nice stay. The rooms were.. Dirty. The sheets were clean and it was matching furniture however the bathroom was disgusting I think I would of been dirtier showering here. The wires were trailing around none of the wall paper matched. Breakfast was nice. Very small portions and the lady didn't speak any English. One of the tables looked like it was covered in dust however I put it down to the light but when we walked past it and touched it it was filthy and it had napkins and cutlery on it. Our next breakfast it had been wiped but only around the cutlery!! It needs a serious update a serious clean and seriously new FRIENDLY staff. I would not stay here again and I would not recommend only for a pit stop if you need a couple of hours sleep.

"Lambton Hounds - October 2014"

Used this hotel as a base for visiting Beamish for a day and Durham for the next. First impressions of the Lambton Hounds at Pity Me: the place was easy to find, the furnishings appeared a little dated but clean nonetheless, the Pub is fine if you just need a good value room and food for a night or two. The staff were helpful and despite previous reviewers, we were made welcome by the pub regulars. Our room was OK - clean, warm and tidy, a comfortable double bed, en-suite etc. The bathroom could really have done with a re-grout and re-silicone around the bath - same for the shower hose… In the bar for a beer or two but was somewhat disappointed in the quality of the real ale, and told the guy that served me. Perhaps they don’t serve enough to turn it over properly? I thought perhaps both the beers I tried were from near the bottom of the barrel. In the restaurant we had our evening meals. Meals were very good both nights. The service was not perfect but, for the numbers that were dining, more than acceptable! Only one young girl taking orders and serving both food and drinks meant that the service might have seemed slow for anyone in a rush. We considered eating out on the second night but could find no different alternative in the vicinity so we were happy to make use of the restaurant again. Highlight of the stay were the breakfasts; very well made, very good service and great coffee. As mentioned in an earlier review, there's no getting away from the fact this is a pub with rooms, so maybe not for everyone. I felt that the positives outweighed the few niggles that I might have had about the place. Last point, we found it very handy for the nearby park and ride service into Durham City centre. You can park your vehicle for FREE when using the Park and Ride bus service and a Day Ticket (unlimited travel including transfer between any of the Park and Ride buses) is only £2.00 Overall would have rated the hotel as good - somewhere between the "average" and "very good" that Trip Advisor use to rate properties.

"Just my cup to tea !"

Stayed here, with the wife, for three nights very recently. First impressions were good and I didn't note a hint of any animosity from the locals, that others state exist at this establishment. Our room was fine - clean, warm and tidy, a double and a single bed + en suite etc. TV was a shade awkward due to a faulty Freeview box, but we soon sorted this out. Down to the restaurant for evening meal. Score here, extremely good - in fact excellent. I had Lamb with trimmings, onion rings and chips and which was exquisite, followed this up with an ice cream. The service was second to none, the lady in question being as naturally pleasant as its possible to be but more than this, she is a great looking lass and her smile is --- well, wow ! Into the bar for a few beers whereby I sampled at least half a dozen pints of Lambton Pale Ale (to be recommended). Whilst drinking all this, we soon had the company of a few local guys with wives etc and whom were very good company (who said these guys are unfriendly - what rubbish). Ok, the decor in the main bar room possibly needs sprucing up, but when one considers "this is a real pub of over two hundred and fifty years" it sort of fits (if you know what I mean). Tappas on Thursday evening in the restaurant - a new one on me but it was pretty good. Anyway, the bus leaves almost outside, destinations to Durham or Newcastle, neither are a huge distance away. I am pleased to recommend this establishment onwards, but moreso to those whom like "real pubs" We will certainly stay here again, I loved it !

"Pity Me is the name of the area, near Durham."
09/01/14 Tricia G North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
The pub/inn is on the road side and parking is available. There's nothing much else in the area and it is quite a few miles to Durham so transport is needed. The pub is tired and in need of refurbishing. The bedroom was extremely shabby with dated and damaged decorations and everything appeared old, mismatched or damaged; it was clean though. The breakfast tables were sticky and not at all appealing. We booked online and the address said Durham, not Pity Me, so we didn't realise we were staying so far out of town or in this particular location.

"Simple B&B, does the job."

We were passing through Durham visiting a friend and only chose this place based on it being very close to where they lived - it's a bit out of town, but nothing a taxi can't handle. The staff were professional and helpful and there's no getting away from the fact this is a pub with rooms, so maybe not for everyone. But we love a bit of quirkiness. The room was extremely dated, with massive CRT telly and anaglypta wallpaper - fortunately we love that kind of thing. Dinner was available in the pub that night (tapas) but we had other plans. The breakfast the next morning, however, was fantastic. Very well made, and very good service. The Lambton is perfect if you just need a good value place for the night. It was also very good value, although we got a good deal because we booked last minute - it was all done online though, which was very convenient too.

"Not great for as a B&B"
06/26/14 Travelin-beans Beaverton, Oregon
Local pub with an attached annex of rooms. The rooms were outdated, cleanliness was in question. However, the bar area was fine, good selection, food was ok, service was great though. The back patio area needs some work, not as advertised in previous photos. I would not recommend this for a b&b stay, however for drinks and watching a match would be just fine.

"OK for locals"

During our three night stay at the Premier Inn just down the road, we decided to eat here on our first night. First impression from outside - looked ok. Stepped inside - locals all turned round to see who was coming in - bit off-putting Dining room only had three tables occupied prior to the three of us coming in, four other people came in after us. Only one young girl taking orders and serving both food and drinks which meant that the service was very slow. Our main courses were ok however the sticky toffee puddings (2 out of our three desserts) were rubbery and the custard tasted like it had been watered down. Just looked back on their website. Interesting reading. They ask for feedback on their 'New Website' which shows their "2010 - 2013 Winner - Taste Durham" quality assured spoon logo and beside it you can view their "2013 Food Menu" All in all 3 star Inn with 3 star quality food and service. Time to update website, menu and service standards for 2014
