On-line details were a bit confusing about number of beds in room, but it turned out OK. Hotel was fine for short stay. Bus stops close by to go into town.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great bar but rooms a bit scruffy"
After a long day travelling I was a bit disappointed by my room. The TV was stuck on ITV3 and I couldnt get it to work. That said I thought the barman/receptionist was very friendly and helpful, and the steak for dinner was lovely. Sadly the room wasn't great so I will be searching around for an alternative next time Im in the Durham area.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Know your bus route"
This hotel was a bargain, just a bit out of the way. There is a bus that goes from downtown Durham directly to the hotel for a very reasonable rate. The bus station is two blocks from the train station. The room was small but comfortable and clean. The breakfast was tasty and generous. The pub serves great local ale. Be warned, there is no one there […] from about 10 in the morning until 2 p.m. check-in time in the afternoon, so make arrangements ahead of time for check-in. "No sleep for us!"
The hotel is well located, and reasonably priced. While the rooms are a little worn, they are clean and adequately equipped. The evening staff were helpful. The problem was the noise. I had read about that in some other reviews so called when I booked and was told that there was no event planned that evening so all would be fine. There was no event […] as far as we could see, but there was a lock in which lasted until about 3am, with associated bass boom of music and singing. None of us got any sleep! No staff responded to the on-going disturbances between mid night and 2:30am caused by two adults. It was left to a guest to call the police to resolve the situation. Although a note was placed under the door at about 3am from the management, this was totally inadequate.Genuine Expedia guest review
"very handy hotel"
Very friendly and accommodating staff, they were very welcoming as It was a last minute booking and the booking had not yet come through to them, very comfortable room for my quick visit. Although located on the outskirts of Durham it is only a quick taxi ride into DurhamGenuine Expedia guest review
"Easy access to Durham centre"
Pleasant pub B&B with friendly staff. It's a bit outside Durham, but there are frequent buses that stop pretty much directly outside and take less than 10 mins into the city centre. Hotel breakfast is generous and the coffee satisfyingly thick and strong.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This inn is 2 stars because the food was good, and the place was clean somehow. It looked nice but rather shabby, there were no toiletries in the en suite. The inn is not near any shops or restaurants. There was no internet and no room service. The television was just a radio: a screen-it was not working. The bed that my daughter slept next to had a […] radiator that was boiling hot and the room was stifling. It was a restless night of fitful sleep, for the bar downstairs were constantly laughing and talking and we could hear it quite clearly and outside there were a fair amount of cars and sirens. On the other hand, the food was quite good, and the prices very satisfying but the water was expensive. Breakfast was the same (but included in the price of your stay), but the process of giving us the food was very slow as there was only one waitress. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The reception was pleasant enough. But we found the room to be less than spotless. It was clean, but there were corners of dust, the central lampshade covered in it, etc. The bed was too short for me (I am 1.85 m). The breakfast was OK but again not outstanding. No fresh fruit on offer. We had our dinner as well. Also that nothing to write home about. […] All in all, given that we were a family of 3 adults wishing to have just the one room, we didn't have much choice given the short notice we had to book it and for where we need to be the next day it was perfectly located. In the same situation a next time, we may consider staying here again, but we're sure there are better alternatives to be found. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Not as advertised"
The room was not like the picture and certainly not value for money.Food in restaurant was the only high light. Durham is actually a ten minute drive away, this Inn is on the out skirts in the suburb of Pity Me.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I found that the room was basic and I was relieved I took shampoo and soap with me. The bathroom carpet smelled of urine and the overall cleanliness was disappointing. I went for a meal in the restaurant to be told that most of the menu was not available. I asked for a drink and was told I needed to go and get one myself from the bar. I had just literally […] put my last mouthful of food in and was chewing as my plate was taken from in front of me. There were not enough sockets in the room, so could either have the television on, or boil the kettle, have the lamp on or plug my phone in to charge. Overall, taking into account the cost, I guess I should not have expected more. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
We arrived to a friendly welcome and the pub itself was what you would expect from such an old pub.Our room though was a little disapointing,it didn't have any charm of an old building and looked like it had been quite a while since it was decorated. It was a shame because it was a good size family room just not a very cosy or welcoming room.It just […] needs new wallpaper and cosier bedding. "Not great for as a B&B"
06/26/14 Travelin-beans Beaverton, Oregon
Local pub with an attached annex of rooms. The rooms were outdated, cleanliness was in question. However, the bar area was fine, good selection, food was ok, service was great though. The back patio area needs some work, not as advertised in previous photos. I would not recommend this for a b&b stay, however for drinks and watching a match would be just fine.
"OK for locals"

During our three night stay at the Premier Inn just down the road, we decided to eat here on our first night. First impression from outside - looked ok. Stepped inside - locals all turned round to see who was coming in - bit off-putting Dining room only had three tables occupied prior to the three of us coming in, four other people came in after us. Only one young girl taking orders and serving both food and drinks which meant that the service was very slow. Our main courses were ok however the sticky toffee puddings (2 out of our three desserts) were rubbery and the custard tasted like it had been watered down. Just looked back on their website. Interesting reading. They ask for feedback on their 'New Website' which shows their "2010 - 2013 Winner - Taste Durham" quality assured spoon logo and beside it you can view their "2013 Food Menu" All in all 3 star Inn with 3 star quality food and service. Time to update website, menu and service standards for 2014

The room was very small and very dated. The staff were very helpful and the room seemed clean. The location wasn't great couldn't get a cab to Durham to save my life and it was too far to walk. Won't be going back.
"slow service in a quiet restaurant"
04/27/14 traceya89 durham, england
went on living social deal but hardly anyone in restaurant and service very slow. we arrived at 1.10 and were abruptly told there was no way we could go into the "restaurant" before 130 so we sat til 130 and were annoyed that people who had come in after us were allowed in the restaurant before us even though they were sitting in the bar too waiting patiently for 130. the restaurant appeared quite dated, although some may think this adds to the charm of the old pub. there was not much selection for the starters or the dessert. we had the pate and the combo which were ok, not lush and not horrible. the beef dinner was nice, the yorkshire pudding was nice and the vegetables were plentiful. the main course was nice but could have been hotter. had the pineapple upside down cake and custard for dessert, was not that nice but as i said not much of a selection. we sat and waited for the bill (even though we did not owe anything , just thought it the courteous thing to do) but in the end we just left as no one came and asked if we had enjoyed the food. very much doubt we will be back. staff not attentive and service slow. food average.
"Extremely pleasant place!"
03/28/14 casestudy Warsaw, Poland
I spent just one night in Lambdon Hounds Inn but it was a very pleasant stay. Single room I booked was the cheapest I could find in the whole area (38 pounds) and I was surprised by how cosy it felt. There was a bathtub, very much appreciated as I could take a long bath after walking all day.The pub itself looked typically English, with low ceilings, warm light and wooden panels. For breakfast there was a selection of cereals, toasts and cooked breakfast made at request. Coffee was really good and staff was friendly, so I would highly reccommend this place as it's a great value for money. The Inn is 40 minutes walk from railway station and less than an hour walk from Durham cathedral. There are also many takeaway Indian and Asian restaurants on the way to the city centre.
"OK, wish I could rate it better!"

I thought there would have been a few more reviews on this pub as we couldn't get booked in for Sunday lunch for 2 weeks! We decided to try this place as I used to work locally, so bought their offer of 3 course Sunday lunch on Living Social. On arrival the car park at the back was busy which was a good sign! We went into the lounge and ordered drinks whilst we waited for our table. After 10 minutes we went into the restaurant. Cosy and busy (I think nearly everyone also had a voucher!) we were quickly offered menus and the pleasant waitress took our order. We had the mixed combo of onion rings, potato wedges and breaded mushrooms and I had the pate. Hot and quick but small portions. The main (both had Turkey) hot, quick but nothing to go wild about, then the pudding (my favourite!) - bread and butter pudding (disappointed, sad face) so opted for the strawberry gateau and cream (for me) and ice cream. Again small portions but OK. We also had a glass of wine each. All in all, an OK meal, like the previous review we wouldn't rush back as it was nothing special and a little too far for us to travel on a regular basis, but I do hope business improves from the offer as it was a lovely pub with lovely staff and these are few and far between nowadays,
"much better than it looks on the outside"
02/23/14 19mary64 kenilworth
Have just come back from a 2 night stay here. Was a little apprehensive on arrival because it doesn't look much on the outside. However there is a large car park at t he back. we received a good welcome. We had a family room which was large, clean and comfortable. There were plenty of pillows, a decent though small tv and a good sized shower room. We all slept well both nights. The towels were a little on the small side but that is often the case in other places. The restaurant is small. The menu offeres a good choice. I had fried calamari on the first night followed by a steak. My partner had garlic mushrooms which were delicious and salmon. My sone had prawn cocktail and pizza which was obviously freshly made. The calamari in particular was splendid. The following night we had variations of the theme. Breakfasts were good. A reasonable choice of cereal, tea coffee and toast. A shame about the cheap tiny pots of jam. The full English was lovely - really hot and consisting of a decent piece of bacon, a good quality pork sausage, egg, hash browns and decent baked beans. Certainly sets you up for the day. The pub offers three different real ales which my partner enjoyed. The pub does have live music sometimes but it stops at a sensible time. Well worth staying here. The owners are pleasant and the accommodation offeres good value for money - better than a chain hotel.
"Excellent all round"

Like most people i searched for a local place to stay, couldn't have wished for a better place, arrived in Freezing rain, slush!!! Having parked the car I walked into a lovely warm Bar where the bar maid welcomed me with a big smile, I asked if rooms where available, The Land Lady gave me the double at the price of a single, it was comfortable, warm, en-suite bathroom. My evening in the bar was made by the locals being friendly, FREE Pool and DukeBox on a Sunday evening helped, Kitchen was closed after Sunday Lunch but the Barman found a menu from Local Take a way and it was acceptable to eat it in the pub. I will stay again and would recommend this to anyone requiring accommodation. Great value for Money.
"An excellent couple of days."

My wife and I had family business in the area and decided to spend a couple of days in Durham where we hadn't been before. The cost was the reason for booking but we had quite accidentally found accommodation that we would most certainly book again. The two evenings we spent in the bar enjoying some beautiful local ales with the local clientele and others from around the UK. The restaurant is more than adequate with good food offered at reasonable prices. The rooms are clean and presentable with all amenities offered. There is a bus stop with a regular service into Durham across the road. All told an excellent couple of days spent in the area.

It's a bit out of Durham, but if you're travelling it's clean, the staff are friendly and the food is good and not over-priced. A triple room cost the same as a triple room in a YHA, but here you get clean bed linen, a private bathroom and towels, so the value for money is there! It's not right over the pub, but that means it was quiet.
