"lovely away from the throngs"
We booked two nights after a week of family time. Location: two cab drivers had trouble locating the resort. Although the property is away from the main drag it was a lovely quiet reprieve before returning home. This is a large complex that is mostly privately owned condos……and very few are occupied…makes for a very quiet environment. The pools are […] clean and huge (like a couple city blocks long huge) The snack bar by the pool has great food and wifi. We hung out there initially as our room was not available until 3pm. Check in was less than ideal. Only one person working initially and I waited more than 45 minutes as she checked in a large family with extensive discussions about day trips, excursions, car rentals etc without acknowledging my presence. No customer service awareness there……after nearly an hour another employee came and oriented me to the facility. My luggage was placed in storage allowing me to enjoy my wait by the pool unencumbered (best burger!) As previous reviews stated this is not a hotel. There is a small convenience store, gym and spa. The breakfast at the adjacent beach club was great….. we hung out at the beach club all day, beautiful beach and wait staff that are very attentive. We used the AC initially but then by opening the front and back windows we enjoyed a lovely cross breeze that was heavenly. With all that we would consider going there again, would rent bikes if we stayed for any length of time. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice hotel on the beach"
Nice, secure beach location. Beautiful, well-maintained grounds. Not close to any restaurants and the ones on site close at 5. Food a bit expensive, but a full breakfast (juice, coffee, fruit, yogurt, granola, eggs, pancakes, French toast, omelets) is included. Great site for a wedding.Genuine Expedia guest review
"V ery Realxing and great price"
It's more of a condo complex than a hotel. Not a lot of amenities other than small poolside restaurant that's open through lunch. The front-desk closes at 10pm as well. The grounds are beautiful, the rooms are beautiful (we had a 2 bedroom penthouse with granite kitchen and 3 bathrooms - kind of an overkill for just the 2 of us but beautiful nonetheless), […] and the beach is amazing. It's a great place to go if you want peace and quiet. You are not in walking distance to anywhere so you will either need a car (which we rented) or rely on taxis to take you to town about 3 miles away. The front desk staff's English-language skills are limited; I called the front desk from my cell because we didn't want the cleaning staff to clean the rooms as we forgot to put our valuables away....the frontdesk thought I was asking for a taxi and even though I thought I finally got through when we got back our room was cleaned....nothing was taken though. On another note, the rooms are not equipped with phones so if you want to make a call to the front desk then you have to use your cell phone or take the long walk over there, which proved inconvenient when our water was shutoff for some inexplicable reason. I had to call twice at my own expense to get someone over to fix it, and no compensation was offered for our time wasted or the charge to my phone. All in all, it is a beautiful complex but only go if you are looking for a private experience as if you were living there. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
EXCELLENT HOTEL!!. beautiful apartments and installations. Ideal for relaxing vacations.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great condo in the Riviera Maya. IT'S NOT A HOTEL"
The most important thing to know is that IT IS NOT A HOTEL. It is a very nice complex built as condominiums. Some of this units are rented. They are very comfortable, new, modern, equipped with basic things, but if you are thinking you are going to be serviced as a Hotel....go to a Hotel. There is no telephone in the condo, so if you need anything, […] you have to go to the front desk. Very nice ladies will make your bed, change your towels everyday, and clean around, but won't wash dishes. The place is superb, very well maintained, with beautiful gardens and pools. You'll find the best beach with white, smooth sand in the Caribbean. You NEED a car to get there because the shuttle from the airport is very expensive. It is 5 minute drive to downtown Playa del Carmen and 45 minutes to the airport. Breakfast is included, the service is slow because everything is done when you order, but the food is great. It has a master bedroom with a king size bed and a second room with two queen beds. Each one with a full bathroom. You can easily sleep six. I would highly recommend going to Sams (15-20 min drive) or other grocery store to buy food and drinks because each unit has a full kitchen. We really enjoyed our stay!! "Pool, Beach and Rooms are Top Notch!"
I loved it! Super clean, pool is amazing and the room was just perfect! I usually look for hotels with 24hr. room service and even though Mareazul does not offer this service I Im sure I,ll return some time soon.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
hsresort is stunning. The location is on the north side of Playa del Carmen and is very quite during the off-season. The rooms ar beautful and have incrdible amenities. The grounds are great as are the restaurants. The resort is very contemporary in terms of its design. We loved it.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Mareazul the Nightmare"
This is not a hotel. It is an apartment complex where they have not been able to sell the apartments so they are no trying to pass it off a s a hotel. They are simply not ready for guests. The lock on the front door did not work when we arrived and it took 3 hrs to fix it. The receptionist (The worst in the world) told me we would have to wait and we […] could not change rooms. She then told me she could not talk to me anymore. The kids were starving and we were suppossed to meet friends for dinner. There is no way to call reception. so I had to walk there every twenty minutes. Reception closes at 10pm. The restuarants closed at 5pm for the christmas period. The patio door did not work, there was a mirror but it was not attached to the wall, hammocks that have no hooks to put them on the wall so they had just been left on the floor, under the furniture was filthy, the beach club ran out of towels, there where no sun beds available any day, the restaurants are outside without any real cover from the sun. God knows what you will do during the rainy season. I asked to see the manager on 4 occassions but he was never available and although I was assured he would come the room to see us, he never did. This is all a shame because the apartments themselves will be great when they are finished. The setting is beautiful, breakfast and the food in general is great and the waiters are exceptional. The problem is that it is just not a hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Ok but won't stay again"
If you like the idea of having resort like amenities, don't stay here. This is a beachfront condo residential rental not a resort. We had a great room, 2 beds 2 baths and a beautiful kitchen and a spectacular view. However, there was construction going on in the unit above us. They were able to move us to a room two doors down but you still could hear […] everything, The front desk couldn't move us to another building because they were either unfurnished or privately owned. The phone didn't work in our room so we had to walk a 1/4 of a mile every evening to have a taxi called for us. The cost of a taxi is 12 us dollars or 120 pesos to and from downtown playa del carmen. The property doesn't have a restaurant only a snack bar open from 8-5. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Forget the inclusive American breakfasts!"
The resort itself is still exceptional. The beautiful beach, the spaciousness of the units that they let out is still the best when it comes to a home away from home. However, because this time we elected to do more cooking than eating out, we found the cooking utensils sadly lacking.. We had to go out and buy a salad bowl as well as tea towels and […] tea cloths to be able to do the dishes!. As we are not spanish we never could find out how to work the dishwasher! Also the breakfast they offer now is horrible!.. as well as the rude server we encountered on our second to last day. 2 years ago, they had fruit cocktail topped with vanilla yogurt and granola as well as all the egg dish choices. For the ones who do not eat eggs or allergic to them, (my daughter) they offered french toast. This time around the yogurt is gone, along with the choice of french toast, so unless you want eggs every day of your stay, forget it. Also the fresh orange juice has been replaced with watered down fruit punch. Absolutely disgusting , we tried for a few mornings to eat what they gave us, but cold toast and cold coffee every day was more than I could tolerate, so we just bought our own groceries for the breakfasts as well. Also they could do with a shuttle service as the taxis into Playa really got to be expensive , for 5 or more people it was $28 each way, that adds up after 2 weeks. "Not a hotel but a condo rental"
Beautiful property and suites, great beach. This is a residential complex so don't expect the services of a hotel, no room service, no many dining choices, no phones to call reception and lack of information when you check in. On the good side, great location but you absolutely need a car, suites are large, comfortable and brand new with all the amenities […] you need when traveling with family: full kitchen, washer and dryer, bathrooms in each bedroom, huge terrace with furniture and awesome views. The free breakfast was way better than we expected. Overall this property offers great value for your money, just know what to expect, do your research and be nice with the staff and you will have a great experience.

"Hidden Family Beach Free of Mayhem!"
04/18/14 donz06 Louisiana
If you're with the wife & kids & find it hard to have family day @ the beach anywhere near Mamitas (Mamitas is the place to be if you're single & young...all day/night beach party/topless/tequila), then try Grand Coral's Playa Azul. We drove there from our condo off 38th & 5th in less than 10 minutes. Grand Coral is a private beach, but, when you drive through the gates @ front hotel entrance & mention "beach", they ask no questions. Follow the small sandy road to the "Beach Club", where you'll find an undisturbed beach & lots of chaise loungers with umbrellas. READ: You will be assessed $20.00US each person (less for kids) to use beach furniture, umbrella and/or beach itself. The GOOD THING is; they let you burn off the $20 each through food & beverage credit via a handy waiter who greets you on the beach. The food & Beverages were well done & not expensive. The rental shop is something right out of the US (unlike other parts of Mexico), where you basically show them your drivers license, fill-out a waiver & rent kayak, boogie boards, etc. You pay when you return. That's right...they TRUST you to return it & then pay, which is something you hardly ever see in Mexico. All staff speaks good English & are professional, yet friendly. This was an easy going day. No hassle, peaceful, attentive staff & great beach. However, I do wish I knew about Mamitas when I was young & single!
"Highly recommend it! great place to stay!!"

We found the apartments lovely. They are modern, spacious, luxurious, they have hotel ammenities such as breakfast, bar, and its own beach. Just 5 minutes away (by car) from la quinta avenida in Playa del Carmen. It is one of the best hotels/apartments I've been in Riviera Maya, by far! Also, the beach is clean and smooth, without rocks, and you can always go in. I highly recommend it!

We spent a few nights at the hotel and got a room in the villa section. The room was beautiful and had a concierge and private pool for villa guests! This was amazing and very relaxing. Property has several restaurants but you need to make sure to make reservations in advance. I would definetly go back!

First thing: this is not a hotel. Dont expect room service or other hotel stuff. I knew about that and was prepared for self catering. Breakfast included (many people complained about poor service at breakfast, but i didnt have any problem. It was fast and delicious). My apartment had a jacuzzy an private pool. Nice rooms, nice bathrooms, full kitchen (could have more utensils). Hotel pool is fantastic. Beach in front of the hotel is good, but not the best for children. we stayed there just one day because we went to many different places (chichen itza, xcaret, tulum, akumal, isla mujeres)I had lunch on arrival at the hotel restaurant. Again good service with very good food. After that i went to downtown playa del carmen where you have many options for self catering (walmart, mega and chedrauy supermarket). No problem at check in, nor at checkout (in fact i used mileage bonus and everthing was paid in advance). YOU NEED A CAR WHEN STAYING HERE. I woul be back for sure.
"Best to rent from private owners with private management companies"
06/20/13 civility York, Pennsylvania
The Mareazul property itself is a gorgeous property with a beautiful beachfront and pool. Pure Mareazul as a "hotel" is lacking in services, in cleanliness and in quality of furnishings and linens. We love staying at Mareazul in one of the privately owned condos. If you want to enjoy the property and receive personalized customer service and quality then rent from a private owner with a private management company. This way you will know the exact location and look of the unit and can check out the ratings for the individual condo. You will be surprised to see that almost every rating of a private unit is excellent. Check the name of the management company that the specific condo uses along with the ratings for their management company.
"Stay away! I got food posisoned by their restaurant and ants was swarming the hotel apartment"
05/31/13 Ingar S Stavanger
My girlfriend and me were "staying" here from 12th-16th of May 13. When we arrived in the middle of the day the 12th I ordered a hamburger from their restaurant in the pool area. After eating half of it I found it raw inside. To make a long story short, that burger put me in the hospital with two types of Salmonella and Amoebiasis, ruining the first 3 days of the vacation. We spent the 4th and last day in Chitzen Itza and came back to the hotel to cook some food for ourself at the apartment. However, we had to cook our food with ants swarming around us. After confronting the hotel management saying that I expect the hotel to take responsibility and compensate me for this disastreous vacation, they promised 3 times to come back to me withing 1-2 days after they "have made some investigations". But no emails and no phone calls 2 weeks after. I have uploaded two videos here to prove the above: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCLsT9RIjVo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGtRAWWAS10
"Good location, terrible service"
03/06/13 Jaime C Puebla,
If your idea of going on vacation is relaxing, please do not visit this place. The worst service in the Mayan Riviera. The towels and bed sheets were dirty. They sell it as a apartment with hotel amenities but it is far from that. No shampoo on the rooms, no soap, nothing. Having so many options in the Riviera Maya, there is no reason to go to this place.
"Nice and new property but very bad service"
01/08/13 sashak87 Moscow, Russia
We bookend our stay through booking.com in May (!), our booking stated that we will live on the waterfront with a wifi everywhere. When we arrived on 29th of December we were very upset to find that not only we won't be getting a beach front room, but our room with "so called partly sea view" had no sea view whatsoever and was about a 10 minute walk to the beach (thanks to amazing landscape design) the most annoying of all was the reception staff who tried to convince us that we should be seeing the sea from the room, but when we offered for her to go and show it to us she refused. Manager was more helpful, but at the end of the day nothing was done about our problem. Oh and wifi is only at the lobby and snack bar, I don't understand how somebody would build a new property without thinking of putting an internet cable straight away. Snack bar staff is either lazy or just not smart, we were constantly waiting for either bill, or for the menus or to place an order. The beach club is very dirty and although was planned to be a nice looking place it's now in a very poor condition. Overall it's a great property, but do try to get a sea view, as the beach is very nice.

The whole family decided to spend the Christmas an New Year together and we opt in going to Playa del Carmen. We were in 13 people and we rented two apartments with 2 rooms each. Each apartment accommodates 6 people but as we had 2 little children in the group, the choice was perfect. The apartments are very spacious and very well equiped. The front desk staff are very pleasure to help you in everything we need. The atmosphere at the pool area are quiet and there are many deck chairs and some beds to relax. In the center of this area, they have a snack bar where we can have the meals. The complex is far located from downtown, than, renting a car is a good idea. The only problem we had was we asked for a beach front apartments, but when we arrived, they were not available and they told us that the rates were not for other this kind of apartment. We asked to the travel agengy for explanations and they told that the information was not correct, because we paid for beach front apartments. At this point, there were anything to do (Who did tell the true?). If you are in a family trip, Mareazul is a great place to stay and I strongly recommend it.
"Awesome suites, disappointing service"
11/01/12 TravelEatSleep1 boston
We rented two suites (2 rooms each, beach front), and were in love with them! We were aware that these are more like apts and dont have the amenities and services of a full hotel (including no dinner service, no room service, no phone). Location: About 10min north of Playa, was great for us. This meant very few people at the beach, super relaxing location. Still, we could easily drive at night to Playa for the hustle and bustle of the town. Rooms: Suite was very large, huge windows with beautiful view of the sea. Service: Terrible! We had multiple incidents 1) One of our suites was for 4 people, and the hotel was only able to provide 1 key. So for the 5 days of our stay we had to coordinate who had the key etc. All the reception could say was that they were searching for the second key and could not find it. 2) Then my parents reserved the hotel shuttle for the airport and it never showed up. At 3am (and late for their flight) they had to get a taxi. 3) There is only wifi in some areas (lobby, beach club) but when the wifi at the beach club was not working for 2 days, we got zero help 4) The worst experience was trying to get the right fare for our room. We were charged $250 more than we should and it took over 4hrs, multiple trips between the beach club and the reception, and talking to over 4 people to get the fare straighted out. It was a true nightmare and ruined our relaxing vacation. It is amazing how incompetent most of the employees were, including the reservations guy and one of the managers. Only one of the reception ladies was super helpful and was able to resolve this. The last day, we decided to move to another hotel. We did not really want to, but I could not justify giving more business to a place that had treated us so poorly.
