Hawkwell House Hotel - Oxford

A pleasant hotel, but very much an “event hotel” (they told us they had about two functions per week). The personnel, as pretty much in all UK hotels at which we stayed, was largely East European (in most hotels the Poles seemed to outnumber all other nationalities), and once again we were impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness of everyone. The […] hotel is located in walking distance to a bus station; the bus goes directly to the town center – it is about a 12 to 15-minute ride. Taking the bus saves driving and is easier on the wallet, because parking in Oxford is neither ample nor cheap. Our nondescript room was in a separate building at the back of the property. It was quiet, but hardly cheerful. The bar – in keeping with the function orientation of the hotel – was friendly and had a large TV screen. Our breakfast was one of those sumptuous buffets at which UK hotels are becoming expert. It was included in our price, as was free Wi-Fi Internet access. For a function in Oxford, the Hawkwell House Hotel may well be among your top choices; for a couple of tourists seeking comfortable, conveniently located and affordable accommodation for a night or two, it is equally recommendable. For an extended holiday, there may be more physically attractive alternatives – I would certainly explore other options on the Internet – quite simply because it is not a cozy or noteworthy place to which you want to come “home” after a long day of sightseeing. If you don't mind staying in Iffley Village, a little outside of Oxford, you should absolutely stay here. The service was excellent. The place is very clean and comfortable, and there is a sitting area with a fireplace that could not be more cozy. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. Arrived at hotel and greeted by very friendly staff. Hotel seems to have been refurbished recently and is very bright and cheerful. In a quiet residential road surrounded by trees. Room was a good size with large very comfortable bed (memory foam) flat screen TV and complimentary tea & coffee with quality biscuits. Lovely modern bathroom. Window was […] fine at this time of year but might be draughty in the winter as it didn't really close properly. Breakfast excellent served by very friendly staff. Five minute walk from hotel to bus stop to catch No.3 bus into centre - buses run every few minutes - cost £3.30 return. The only problem we experienced was that we left our car parked under a tree which deposited sticky sap all over it. However, when we requested a wet cloth to clean the windows one of the managers insisted on doing it for us! Read more

Hotel is in a lovely village and gives you the option of staying in the countryside or walking along the river to experience oxford and all it has to offer. My husband and I enjoyed our stay and hope to visit again next year if not sooner.

I booked Hawkwell House because of its convenient location near Oxford. I just needed a bed for the night and a parking space for my car, but actually the service and value for money was more than I expected. Dinner was OK and quite cheap for a hotel, and the service was quick and friendly. The booking included a full English breakfast in the price, […] which is exceptional. Usually you have to pay extra for breakfast, and certainly if a cooked breakfast is provided. Again quick and friendly service. The buildings of Hawkwell House do need some renovation (woodwork of the window looked very old in my room), but I could see renovation works were in progress. My room had a very good shower with thermostat tap and great water pressure. Only the bed could have been better: the mattress was a bit sagging and there were lots of pillows, but none of them very comfortable. Read more

The Hawkwell Hotel is gorgeous. Currently undergoing some refurbishment that will make it even more luxurious. Staff are courteous, willing to help and friendly. Made for a perfect one night stay, wish I could have started longer to be honest. Will be returning.

We enjoyed staying at this hotel. The room was clean and spacious with a very comfortable bed (Tempur mattress) - slept like a log! Bathroom was spotless too. Really nice staff. Good food and service at breakfast. The hotel is in a quiet location just a bit out of the centre; we took a taxi into town which only took a few minutes.

It was very nice but the only thing was it took a long time to have breakfast we waited an hour we had the full english when it came it had dried out ie eggs etc . The hotel was full in staying that they did well

We had a very enjoyable stay. Iffley Village is very quiet, and at the same time it only takes a few minutes to walk to the bus stop. There is also a friendly local pub with good food that we can recommend. The hotel staff were very helpful and service-minded. Our only complaint: The cereal bowls were not always clean.

We have stayed at this hotel 2-3 times. In general, we have always been happy with the stay. However, on this occasion, we were given a room in a separate building a fe minutes from Reception. Compared to the rooms in the main building, our room was much smaller, the bathroom was pokey and the toilet flush was so stiff, we struggled to flush it. We […] had my 85 yr old mother in law with us in a separate room and she was unable to flush her toilet. On arrival, when were told we were in the separate building, the receptionist tried to reassure us that this was in our favour to avoid the noise in the main building, but we have never been disturbed when we have stayed in the main building previously. If choose to stay here, make a point of saying you want a room in the main building, not the annex which I think is called Elm House. Do not be swayed by the Receptioniist reassurance which is probably what they are told to say to al guests who question being put in the annex.The breakfast, which is complimentary is cooked fresh and really very good. Vi bodde to netter på hotellet, og trivdes godt. Det var et stykke til byen (ca. 45 min gangavstand), men en fin vandretur langs Themsen. Godt busstilbud, så alt i alt grei beliggenhet. Fint hotell i en stor og idyllisk hage. Vi bodde på et skikkelig stort og komfortabelt værelse med gratis kaffe/ te/ vann, men dessverre med en ikke så veldig behagelig […] madrass i sengen... men rent og ordentlig på alle måter. I enjoyed my stay here; the room was quiet and comfortable, room service menu was unusually varied, service was fast, and food quality good. My room was in Elm House; if I was here on holiday I would probably prefer the main building, but I enjoyed the quietness of Elm House. Service was excellent.
