"Popular pub with rooms in Yorkshire countryside"
Wath is a dot of a town in Yorkshire, for which The George is the local pub. It's on the main street, and has a generous parking lot in the rear. It has a small attached wing with several guest rooms and a small dining room to complement the main event, which is drinking at the bar. The hostess is cheerful, the rooms are comfortable with bathrooms up-to-date and clean, the dining menu is fairly standard but certainly satisfactory (although I probably wouldn't fuss with the sardine starter again ...), service is pleasant, and breakfast is the usual filling array. In short, a modest but entirely satisfactory place to stop over in the vicinity of Ripon. With the exception of the sardine, I'd be glad to repeat the experience.

"One night stay"
Lovely place, great accomodating staff, fantastic locally sourced food in the restaurant. Some of the little things let this place down a bit though- which can be easily fixed: 1. Light didnt work (bulb out) 2. Ironing board cover needed replacing 3. Be good to provide dressing gowns and biscuits (would be fitting to value of room). Unfortunately the room was a bit noisy, with an extractor kicking in a few times during the night on the wall outside the window. This did make for a disturbed sleep, hence a lower score on comfort. Young girl with blonde hair serving in restaurant had excellent customer service skills- well done her!

"A little gem in the perfect position for touring."
We stayed at the George as the second part of a weeks escaping builders, and what a little gem. The people are friendly, the food is absolutely brilliant and the prices are not overly expensive. Have a good breakfast, don't bother with lunch but save yourself for the excellent evening meals - you won't regret it. Rooms are snug so don't take a large suitcase, but comfortable with all the usual refinements. Get the extra size superking if it's available, but don't be put off if it's not.

"Warm welcome and friendly atmosphere"
After a drive from Manchester in torrential rain, the warm welcome from Carolyne was much appreciated. A tasty dinner served by a friendly waitress completed our recovery from the journey. The bedroom was comfortable with extra touches like a cafetiere with real coffee. A good breakfast in the morning set us up for the next part of our journey. Would thoroughly recommend The George at Wath.

"Fantastic service"
Outstanding service from start to finish. The owners were friendly, chatty and took great care of us even though we were only there for the one night. The food was absolutely outstanding (particularly the steak and ale pie!) at a more than reasonable price. This hotel is literally the only place in the village so you will have to drive a little further afield for shops, however it is a great location for hiking and is a beautiful village. Ripon is less than 10mins drive away so it is ideally located for a getaway. We will absolutely stay here again.

A very peaceful inn with bedrooms. Excellent breakfast and helpful staff. Only downside was that there were no evening meals served on a Sunday and after a long walk in the countryside we had anticipated eating in. "Two nights in Wath"
Our stay for two nights was memorable because of the friendly welcome to The George and the comfort of the hotel. We were very impressed with the cuisine which included a very special pate and a superb beef which we have never seen before. So impressed we are revisiting TheGeorge next year, because it is in the centre of some marvellous scenery and provides a fantastic table after a hard days' holidaying!

"Good service - and excellent breakfast!"
We were greeted quickly by a very friendly employee. Our room was large and well furnished, with very comfortable beds, and we were glad that the heating was on as the weather had changed to autumn quite suddenly. My only criticism would be that some of 'fixtures and fittings' needed a good dust! Our breakfast was cooked perfectly, by the young, helpful chef - exactly what we asked for.

"Well worth a visit"
Did a one night B&B plus evening meal here situated in a quiet very attractive upmarket village. The sun was at it hottest but the owner Caroline had made sure a fan was on in the room when we arrived. She couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming. The food was very good (try the Italian meat balls, really outstanding) and service excellent by Millie, her first night! This is really a resturant with a small bar area where the locals dominate (friendly enough if a bit loud) as it is the only place in the village for a drink. Worth seeking out as is a few miles off the main road system.

"Great service in a superb location"
After spending 3 nights in a very poor hotel in York, The George at Wath was a vast improvement. The service was friendly and efficient and the rural location suited us perfectly. The beds are really comfortable and the linen is good quality. My only gripe would be the small size of our room (Ripon) which was classed as superior and to be fair, if the weather hadn't been so very hot, it would have mattered less. The owner quickly found us a fan, which did help the situation. The food is good and I recommend the ice cream with nut brittle. The chef gave me the recipe for the nut brittle, which I made this morning, so many thanks for that. We will return next time we are in North Yorkshire.

"good but did not live up to previous reviews on TA"
At 1st may I say the staff were friendly, helpful and a credit to the place, especially as the owner and 'head chef' were away. However we expected better decor / fittings and a less plain menu based on the previous reviews. We were in room "Thistle" which was freezing on arrival. Remedied by switching on the radiator using the "dodgy theremostatic radiator valve". The shower was great but the surrounds and the bedroom furniture need some TLC. The menu was not as interesting as expected but maybe this is due to the fact that the pub changed hands in January (we had chosen the George partly based on it's 2012 food reviews but what we got was more like well prepared pub food)

"Thoroughly excellent"
The George, although in a very rural situation is a thoroughly modern establishment in every other way. The staff are welcoming and friendly, without being pushy, and make you feel comfortable and "at home" as soon as you walk in. There is obvious attention to detail in every area of the establishment, which is contemporary in style and spotless, and displays plenty of character/atmosphere. The bar is a friendly area to glance at the Yorkshire Post or have a good chat with locals in front of the log fire. Add to this a good choice of real ale, excellent wines and gourmet food...no wonder I would have happily stayed longer than 2 nights, and I have no hesitation in recommending The George.

"Top notch dining"
Village location, bustling pub, rooms appointed to a very high standard, top class evening dining in the restaurant and an outstandingly good Yorkshire Breakfast. Not sure if there was much vegetarian choice so check first if this appies to you. Service perhaps a tad slow in the retaurant, to be hyper-critical, where some noise wafted in from a bustiling bar in the evening...and there was a little mix up with the bill. But overall extremely pleasant helpful professional staff and highly recommended place to stay.

We stayed here for two nights when we visited Thirsk races. Firstly I must say that it is a very friendly and warm place. The proprietors are lovely and always happy to help. Our room was clean, fresh and had tea making facilities, TV and a lovely bathroom. (water was piping hot) I have to say that the highlight of our stay was the food. Everything that was put down before us, whether it be breakfast or evening meal, was superb ! Compliments to the chef! The locals who visited the pub on the evening were lovely too, talking to us and making us feel welcome. We had a great time here and will definitely be back.

A fantastic hotel set in rural North Yorkshire, situated in a lovely quiet village.... Just what the doctor ordered for a peaceful getaway from the hustle and bustle of a city life. The room was beautifully presented split over two floors, the bathroom was a generous size, a dressing table for the ladies with a hair dryer provided. We took our dog (sky) who was welcomed when we arrived, at meal times and in the bar she was more than welcome to socialise with the locals and be fully part of our short stay. The staff were very friendly and engaged in conversation taking a keen interest in us and our lives. Luke welcomed us warmly in reception, then served us drinks and turned out to be the fantastic chef that cooked our evening meal and breakfast. Meals were beautifully presented and home made at a reasonable price. Nothing seemed to be a problem for the staff, they were always available to serve and take care of us, even though we were visitors we were made to feel as if we were part of their community. Thank you for a fabulous stay Lisa and Vince

"Another fantastic stay at the George"
08/17/15 Chris C Lancashire
This is our second stay at the George taking in our annual Ripon Races Day. We have stayed in Ripon itself a couple of years ago but we wanted somewhere more rural and personal and Caroline and Scott really make you feel welcome at the George. From the moment you get through the door you know you will be well looked after. The rooms are all of a very high standard and it's so peaceful and relaxing. You can eat in the bar area but they also have a lovely quaint little restaurant area and I have to say that the food is really of a much higher standard than you would expect in a rural pub with massive scallops, guinea fowl, home made fish cakes and the best fish and chips I have ever had. Caroline was only too helpful as ever in sorting us out a taxi to get us too and from the race course and you always feel welcome in the bar area with all the locals getting ready for their cricket match. Breakfast is always just perfect and again of a high standard. We will be returning again next year. Thanks again to Caroline and Scott at the George.

"Excellent food - excellent staff"

I stayed at The George at Wath for one night (Friday) before a wedding. It's on a beautiful village street/road with delightful cottage-type properties and a church at the far end - definitely a photo-fest opportunity. As a single traveller I booked a single room which was situated directly over the front door - this is an old building with single glazed sash windows so I was a little concerned about the noise - but was pleasantly surprised - a few 'polite' conversations were overheard but nothing to disturb. The room itself was clean and well supplied (tea, coffee, bottled water etc) but there was NO room to move about given that there was a 3/4 rather than single bed - I would have gladly traded the 3/4 bed for more wriggle room - and the bathroom was tiny (though extremely well furbished (power shower, back-lit mirror etc)...a big person would suffer. I was warmly welcomed by Luke - a lovely laid back young man with a charming personality - who also turned out to be the chef. I ordered lamb which was cooked to perfection and served beautifully - in the bar, though I could have eaten in the dining room if I wanted. The entire meal was faultless and a far cry from 'pub grub'. I had to leave early and breakfast was ready for me at the time I requested, with all the things I requested. The business is very well looked after (i.e. staff are very attentive, friendly, linen and rooms clean and orderly) but decor could do with a bit of attention (e.g. carpets need a clean, skirtings are scuffed etc) This would not put me off a 2nd visit - and I would recommend it for the food alone.. It has wifi but it's a bit erratic and only really available in one or two spots - but it's free when you can get it!

The welcome was warm and friendly and helpful. The room and ensuite were perfect, very clean and attractive. The evening meal was tasty, well cooked and good value, the waitress was quietly efficient and most attentive. The breakfast was excellent, the best we have had.The service was swift yet friendly. For us it was so good that we could use it as a meeting place with friends and family. The owners even helped us to phone our contacts.

"A Little gem in the heart of Yorkshire"
05/31/15 John W Milton Keynes, United Kingdom
We stayed at the George, having moved on from an indiffernt hotel run by a major chain, and what a difference. The small family run inn was immediately more friendly and helpful. There are only five guest rooms and they tend to be a little cosy, so don't pack a large suitcase, but they are clean and comfortable with all the usual refinements. Meals are a delight. Have a good Yorkshire breakfast, enjoy your day out, but save yourself for dinner in the evening. The food is absolutely splendid and would do justice to a much bigger establishment - the chef is amazing. If you want to tour Yorkshire or are just looking for a weekend break, give this one a try - you won't regret it.

"Much too expensive"
05/12/15 frederickhiggs Ashford, United Kingdom
Received a warm welcome and had a very comfortable and clean room. A bit noisy from someone's television. Breakfast itself was fair but one had to go to a side-table for marmalade from rather dreary jars, one of which had cereal fragments in it. The sugar bowl was dirty and the spoon caked with sugar - all needed refreshing. Around the same weekend we had really excellent b&b's elsewhere (with sherry in the room!) for £75 and £90 so paying £105 per night at the George for a mediocre experience was quite excessive.

The welcome at The George was great - just what we wanted - a pot of tea delivered to the room with home made biscuits! The room was lovely and everything was clean, tidy and worked well. Nice bar with a good selection of local, well kept beers and the food was really excellent. The staff were all really jolly, friendly, helpful and welcoming. What more can we say? Oh yes, one more thing: no noise.
