I was looking for a place to spend the night whilst visiting a son at the uni. Blue Keys had all the facilities I needed for the visit, without paying for a load I did not need. It was also the most convenient in terms of distance. Unlike many of the hotels, there was no surcharge for parking so I got a very pleasant, clean, nicely furnished room with […] everything I needed for quite a lot less than I was being offered elsewhere. The service was very friendly and you even get live music in the very reasonably priced bar on some evenings. The hotel was clean and tidy. The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. Only about 10 minute walk to The Mayflower Theatre but far enough out of the City centre to be very quiet. We will definently use this hotel again.

It's close to the centre yet in a quiet and attractive residential area. Clean, well-equipped, comfortable, nice owners and staff and excellent food. Very good value for money but somewhat lacking the ambience and decor to become the boutique hotel to which I think it aspires. Would have no hesitation in going back though.

Arrived at the hotel a bit early after a long drive and a long haul flight. My room was ready and staff went out of their way to help me get to where I needed to be. Food was very nice, beer was cold. What more Can a kiwi traveller ask for!

Bad surprise to find no lavatory paper at a crucial moment (worse things happen at sea). If you have room no. 1 in summer (windows open) be aware that the (designated?) smoking area is below your window. Finally, to be really picky, the manager seemed a bit rushed and single-handed at breakfast. That said, my eggs benedict were superb. I stayed here overnight as I was on a business training course at the Novatel. This hotel was only a short drive away. Having read that the owners were updating the place I wondered what to expect. The place is newly and tastefully decorated. I stayed in a good sized single room with ensuite. It was spotless, the bed was comfy, the shower was large […] and powerful with plenty of hot water, the tv had Freeview with enough channels. I had room 5 at the back of the hotel and it was quiet. As I was a female travelling alone I didn't want to venture out so I had dinner downstairs. I sat in the area at the back of the bar which wasnt busy and Gary the barman was very helpful. He even realised the music was too loud without being told and turned it down before I could say anything. The meal was very good, the portions were plentiful, the variety of menu made my choices difficult! Elliott was also the chef and came out personally to check that everything was ok with my meal. Continental breakfast was included in the price I paid and was also good. I would definitely stay here again. It's not easy taking over a business like this but all the hard work is paying off. The whole hotel (including the bar and restaurant downstairs) has been recently refurbished by the new owners. My room was immaculate and quiet, with everything you would expect including a large and powerful shower. This hotel wasn't what I was expecting! For the good deal I got through Hotels.com I expected a low rate chintzy B&B style place, but the Blue Keys is modern and comfortable. The restaurant serves good food at very reasonable prices and as we were there on a Saturday night there was live music on - which blissfully didn't disturb us when we retired […] to bed. Breakfast was plentiful and well cooked with good choice of items and the offer of alternatives if those listed were not to our liking. The staff were lovely and very helpful, both in the evening when we arrived and on departure. The only niggles I had were the shortage of towels in the bathroom - for one night a bath towel each was sufficient but I do prefer a separate hand towel normally - and the quality of the beds. We were in twins due to booking at short notice and the veneer was peeling off the headboards, plus there were quite alarming squeaks when turning over in the night. Nothing a good going over with a screwdriver and some superglue wouldn't fix ;) and it didn't detract from a perfectly pleasant stay. Read more

Arrived at the hotel the day prior to our cruise, the car park was full but the owner kindly moved his so we could get in. Our bags were taken to our room which we were pleasantly surprised with. The weather was appalling so we stayed in to have an evening meal which was very good and served quite quickly. Breakfast next morning was a small help yourself […] continental which was complimentary followed by an english breakfast menu which was chargeable. It was all very nicely presented and all of the staff were very pleasant and helpful. Our cruise boarding time was 2pm so we asked if we could leave the car there whilst we walked into town(about 20mins) this was no problem. The Blue Keys has had a recent change of owner who is working very hard to improve on the already high standard. We had a fantastic evening meal, which was prepared during the preparations for a 65 birthday ! There was no indication of any chaos that may have been caused by our additional order, and our meal was served in good time and with excellent […] service by our waitress (owners wife). If we one slight criticism that would be the pricing structure of the breakfast menu, some items appeared to be slightly overpriced. No kettle in room, despite team making facilities, this was requested on two occassions and promised to be rectified but never was supplied. […] The room was very warm with no thermal control. Friendly staff and a nice welcome. Thought the place would be alright. None of the bulbs in the ceiling lights worked, only one lamp. The bed wasn't screwed together properly so wobbled and squeaked when making even the slightest movement. There were old bloodstains on the sheets. The toilet wouldn't flush without a lot of pushing and re-pushing of […] the button. The shower was very mouldy. The television was faulty and could not be taken out of radio mode without entering a specific channel (couldn't flick) - either remote problem or badly configured TV. And, for quite a good price for a single room (apparently not allowed to mention the rates here, but receipt was for £8 less than paid to Hotels.com) - no breakfast thrown in - had to pay separately for the food - continental and cooked separately, not combined - only good thing is the free bottomless cup of coffee. Overall, very disappointed, not going to recommend - at least the staff were somewhat pleasant. Read more
