there are good and bad things about this place ---great bathroom and air conditioning.... however, no DO NOT DISTURB signs available, if you are not up early enough, they will knock then enter shortly thereafter... so no real privacy in a sense. Parking is horrible, they technically have parking, but only really for narrow vehicles. The owner seems nice, but she can be really pushy about parking in the right spaces (which are tiny and impossible) and just generally got a weird sense from her. Unfortunate experience overall, the small good things like the bathroom hardly made up for it. Wish there was another place in fairfax to stay.....

The room was beautiful, with high ceilings and lots of light. The location was very convenient because the whole town is within a few minutes walk, but there is a nightclub right next door, so it can be loud at night. Some of my room lights were out, and were not fixed during my stay, which was a bit frustrating.

Bed was comfortable, room was clean. Disappointed there was no coffee maker in the room since we wake up very early. No ice maker in the building either. Parking is a little awkward due to narrow driveway. Within walking distance to several restaurants and shops.

Booked for a wedding reception nearby. Did not expect to have such fun exploring the town and many cultural restaurants. Nearby health food store was a plus. Stayed 3 days and wished for more.

The rooms were clean but strangely designed. Most back onto an alley that seems a popular hangout for people drinking at the grunge bar next door, so it was noisy up to about 11:00. The rest of the neighborhood is great however; lots of restaurants and the good movie theater complex right next door. When we arrived the manager insisted we show our reservation confirmation, and when we didn't have it was hard to persuade, even with credit card and I.D. that we were really the guests of that name. Very strange. Finally she let us in to the room with a jumble of old furniture, a hard bed, BUT, a lovely jacuzzi bath. Go figure.

The Fairfax Inn worked well for us as an overnight on route to the Bodega Bay area from San Fran. The staff was helpful, however hampered a bit because information (ie time of late arrival) entered into hotels.com didn't get to them. So call ahead if you have any specifics they need to know. Our fan controls in the room weren't easy to find but otherwise it was a basic comfortable stay that worked out alright. Outdoor area was a nice place to access free WIFI, drink coffee and answer email.

Room looked nice but there wasn't a comfortable place to sit in it - except the bed which was great. There were two decorative very high windows so the room never got dark. Had 2 strait (dinner table chairs) and a useless very hard futon. No elevator and all rooms were upstairs over the garage and building. Advertised as a bed and breakfast but the breakfast was less than the "continental" style. Fortunately, there is a very good little restaurant across the street. Did I mention the hotel is next to a venue that plays LOUD music until 2am? Take ear plugs. And the room was extremely overpriced but that goes with the area. As uncomfortable as it was, it was still better than dealing with the traffic getting back and forth from the San Rafael area. Parking was an issue even though there might have been enough spaces. Take a small car if you don't want to struggle with the space. We will Never stay here again. Oh, and if you want ice, the manager will give it to you if you give her your ice bucket. You have to be kidding. But, the manager lady was very nice.

The Inn is in "downtown" Fairfax, adjacent to the movie theater and a bar. Due to flight cancellations from winter weather conditions on the East Coast I ended up at the Inn for 5 days instead of 2 as planned, so I got a pretty good feel for the place. Fortunately business was slow due to a recent spate of bad weather on the West Coast so I could just continue in my room (#5), which was located on the back side of the property. I found the room very comfortable, with a gas log fire place to take the chill off the room when returning in the evening, a nice complement to the room's HVAC unit. Bathroom was modern with a Jacuzzi tub (which I didn't use) and all very attractive in appearance with a vaulted ceiling. Detail work was impressive with high end honey-comb blinds in the windows, although the carpet was a bit lumpy, albeit basically in good shape. Rooms open onto an exterior landing and are accessed via a rather narrow and unattractive stairway near the parking garage. The continental breakfast is minimal, consisting of a selection of various kinds of breads, sweet rolls, coffee, tea, juice, and cereal, squeezed into a corner of an already very small office space, but very homey and on par with what I make do with at home. I have a return visit already planned and recommend the Inn for anyone looking for accommodations in this neck of the woods. I experienced none of the noise issues from the bar that other reviewers have complained about.

...I had booked this room for my parents as I live in San Anselmo, and the location is close. I love Fairfax, and the inn was nicely nestled against the hill. The room was spacious with high ceilings and neat and clean. The inn could use a bit of a refresh though, with an old TV that was out of focus, old linens, and a Goodwill futon in the space. But, my parents could not speak highly enough about the staff, and you can't beat the location. For a place to sleep, it fit the bill.

The Fairfax Inn is not really a bed and breakfast in the traditional sense, and certainly is not a luxury hotel.... but none the less, it does the trick. Fairfax is a great little town, and the Fairfax Inn is right in the middle of that "scene". Just walk around the corner to great food, great coffee and great music. Due to the proxcimity of the nightlife, the noise level can be a bit much for quiet sleeping. Quaint and cool.

"Hidden Gem"

My wife and I stayed here while visiting our son who lives in nearby San Anselmo.Although the inn is somewhat hidden between 2 buildings, it is quite nice. The setting is nicely arranged in a garden-like setting and is nicely decorated. The rooms are luxurious and large, with jacuzzi tubs and a fireplace. The price is very reasonable for Marin County. Although the location is distant from San Francisco, that in not altogether bad, as it is situated in a quaint and quiet area of Marin and is close to San Rafael, Point Reyes, and Sausalito. The owner and manager is very nice and accommodating. She was helpful with dining and entertainment suggestions.

"Superb!"

My friend and I chose this place to stay simply because we didn't want to look farther afield. We were in Fairfax, we wanted a room NOW, and this place looked *good enough*. As it turned out, our first impression vastly underestimated the place. Fairfax Inn is a charm. First to explain our first impression: Fairfax Inn probably used to be a motor court or motel. It is a row of rooms above a carport, reached by a narrow walkway, Standard motel fare. Now, we were in Marin County. Surely, we thought, we could find something more interesting than a *motel*. But we were tired and wanted to rest up before dinner, and we had a big day the next day. We forgot, though, that WE WERE IN MARIN COUNTY. There seems to be something intrinsic about the geography, that even the most mundane things like motels can be turned into magic places. This is what Fairfax Inn turned out to be. Our room (#5) was huge and tall, with a cathedral ceiling. The windows toward the back faced onto the coastal hills, and the next morning before the fog cleared, we could see the fog swirling above the houses. The bed was covered with a fluffy comforter and good pillows. We were tired, so we were hoping against hope for a good night's sleep, knowing how motel beds can sometimes be, and were delighted to wake from a deep and refreshing sleep the next morning. We had our choices of restaurants for dinner and breakfast. I have been gluten-free for over twenty-five years (so it's not a fashionable choice for me, but a necessity), and I was thrilled to find that I could eat well in Fairfax. The Fairfax Inn was less than a five minutes' walk from all the best restaurants in town. And with all this, the price was right. If you want to stay in Fairfax, this inn is pretty much it. However, if you want to stay in Marin County, you have a broader choice. I suggest that, unless you particularly want to stay in specific city, Fairfax Inn is a great choice. It's comfortable, charming, and a surprisingly good price.

"Central to everything"
08/13/14 Deebwex Quesnel, BC
It's not like Fairfax has a great deal of choice, but the Inn is an ideal base for whatever activities bring you to the community. Rooms are good size, beds comfortable, and bathrooms above average (although the toilet was sporadic in its flush capabilities, and we never did manage to change the shower setting from "pulse"). Ceiling fan, AC, and TV. No fridge or in-room coffee/tea making amenties (although that simply meant we were "forced" to use The Coffee Roastery, which is excellent). The so-called deluxe breakfast is a bit of a joke, unless you like poppyseed-lemon muffins and sundry pastries from Costco...but it gets you on your way and there are plenty of local eateries if you want something more substantial. Fairfax is not exactly a big city but the Inn is, nonetheless, central to everything. The aforementioned Coffee Roastery is a short walk away; Grillys will serve you great Mexican-style food; and you won't find better Italian cuisine anywhere on the planet than at Fradelizio's (the wild salmon is typically caught that same day off Bolinas, and the house-blend of red wine will change your perception of "house red" forever). Good Earth Food Market will cover all your needs for snacks, lunches, etc. Most stores don't open til 11am. Room reservation is not yet on-line, you won't even get an e-mail confirmation, but telling you this is merely intended as a FYI - we would certainly stay here again in the event of a return to Fairfax

My girlfriend and I stayed here this last weekend (May 16, 17, checked out on the 18), we stayed in room 4, a king room, we took a trip to San Francisco and this was perfect! The room felt like it was out home, the best was huge and very comfortable, nice having a fireplace and a great working heater, the tv got local channels but we liked being able to see the news (traffic). The bathtub was more like a hottub, it was amazing to relax in after walking around the city, the bathroom was huge! The high ceilings made everything seem bigger and the service was just amazing! The owner was so nice every morning asking if we needed anything as we walked down. The things you read about the noise, ingnore them, all you have to do is shut the windows and you can't hear a thing! It was a great experience and we would recommend to anyone!

"Only place to stay in Fairfax, and actually quite good"
02/15/14 JAXers Jacksonville, FL
The Fairfax Inn is located in "downtown" Fairfax, adjacent to but well back from the movie theater and a bar. Flight cancellations from winter weather conditions on the East Coast put me at the Inn for 5 days instead of 2 as planned, so I got a pretty good feel for the place. My room (#5), was located on the back side of the property (as are #3-12 ... I suspect #3,4,5,6,7 are least affected by whatever might be taking place at the bar scene - over 5 days I heard none of the noise others have complained about). I found the room to be very comfortable, helped by having a gas log fire place to complement the HVAC unit. Vaulted ceilings gave the room a spacious feel, and it was already larger than what is typical for most hotels. The bed was comfortable and I rested well each night. The bathroom was modern and well-appointed with a Jacuzzi tub (which I didn't use). Towels and amenities were of good quality. Overall, I found the experience better than for the Sheraton over in San Rafael, the only other place I've tried in this area. The room was always back in perfect order when I returned each evening. Inn construction is concrete pillar and post, with all of the rooms above the parking garage, each opening onto an exterior walkway accessed via rather narrow and unattractive steel/concrete stairways. This is not a B&B, but does include a minimal continental breakfast, consisting of a selection of various kinds of breads, sweet rolls, coffee, tea, juice, and cereal, squeezed into a corner of an already very small office space, but very homey and on par with what I make do with at home. Internet service worked fine for me, not great, but fast enough - my test is being able to comfortably read the on-line newspaper from back home, which is imaged on the web, and it was OK for that. I should note that cell phone service in the Fairfax area is spotty at best, so don't be surprised if your carrier doesn't have service there. Everything in Fairfax is within easy walking distance from the Inn. I particularly enjoyed Perry's Deli for sandwiches and the Iron Springs Pub for dinner, neither of which will break the bank and both of which have good food and spirits. I have a return visit already planned and recommend the Inn for anyone looking for accommodations in this neck of the woods. It's a downtown property with some years on it (which is the case for all of downtown Fairfax), but is well maintained, especially the room interiors. Just don't expect everything to match up to a newer property. I found the woman who operates the place to be quite pleasant, albeit a bit shy, probably because she knows her English is a bit hard for many to understand (she's from India). Although you can book on-line through Expedia, reservations are managed on paper, which means it might be best to call them in (which also allows you to request a particular room).

"Expect bruising"
07/22/13 TwinCreek Michigan
My family rented six rooms for a several night stay for a reunion. We chose this hotel due to proximity to a family member's house. It is not a bed and breakfast. More like an abbreviated low cost motel with a few ( and same each day) breakfast choices... Dry cereal and left over pastries. The hot water and tea bags were good. But we went to The Roastery down the street for coffee and croissants. Rooms were spacious and beds were comfortable. But there are only two small lumpy pillows per bed. We had to ask for more in unit 5. The placement of the bed was the cause for bruising. The oversized entertainment center ( in unit 5) is only about 15 inches from the square cornered footboard. (Similar in other units. The doors in the center in one unit did not push in when open, making the passageway even smaller). Two persons could not pass at the same time. Additionally, you were bound to cut the corner too sharply when getting up during the night thereby causing a significant bruise. Been there/done that. No hotel should have square corners on a footboard. The problem could be minimized by either replacing the center with a much smaller unit, placing the small television on a table, or switching the table and center in a different area of the room. The ceiling fan is great.... If you desire only one speed, which is hurricane force. One room fan didn't work at all, so management had to bring in a floor fan. The Manager was very accommodating and friendly in all aspects, but she acknowledged she was aware of the intermittent fan problem, but apparently hasn't had it fixed. Wall switches for the fans did not work properly in all rooms. A small rubber stopper on the shower head in a few rooms popped out at first causing water to spray all over their bathroom. Unit 6 has a transom window that allows in the sun making the room especially hot. Room hair dryers must be originals and only work well on bald heads. One room didn't bring a dryer because she was told there were dryers provided - but they barely blow warm air. Management provided her with a portable unit at her request.. At least one room's fireplace did not work. The hotel is in a great location if you don't want to drive to restaurants, etc. But it could have been noisier if the attached but unrelated bar had not been under construction. Unit 5 was quiet even with the window open. Hotel structure is in need of maintenance and updating. Because of location, the price is probably "reasonable" for the area, which is something to consider. But we wouldn't stay here again unless there were improvements.

Stayed at the Fairfax Inn in Fairfax, CA, March 14 &15. Had stayed about 4 years ago, and now, it's somewhat run-down. Dirty bedspreads, terrible lumpy pillows. The weird vaulted ceiling has a top window in the units with no shade on it, so be prepared for early morning light. I was in room 5 and it wasn't that noisy from the two raunchy bars that are on the street in front of the hotel. I didn't bother with the breakfast because I figured it was cold cereal and bad coffee. Went to the wonderful Roastery down the block. They need to paint and recarpet these rooms. I won't be back.

To start with, it's not a "bed and breakfast" any more. The continental breakfast also leaves a lot to be desired. The room was nice even if the TV was old. If you enjoy a jacuzzi, this might be a place to check out. The price was very reasonable for the location. The location makes it easy to miss and all the rooms appear to be on the second floor.

Very helpful staff, well appointed rooms with jacuzzis, right in the heart of Fairfax's lively (and charming) downtown. We were surprised to get such a nice place for $120. Really enjoyed it. I agree that the breakfast was a little light, but that's hardly a turn off in my book.
