We visited Whitby on the trail of master navigator Captain James Cook's early days and this hotel was perfectly placed for this. In spacious grounds with ample onsite parking, the hotel is a short drive to Whitby with its eerie abbey and close to Staites where a young Cook worked in the drapery shop. The hotel provided all the comfort needed for a journey […] into history. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
I booked this hotel as a surprise romantic wknd for my wife as she has never had a real break away from our twin boys, & this place looked & sounded amazing. Whitby is also a really lovely place to go & visit so when we did arrive on the Friday in the downpour of rain. We were treated like royalty from the moment we got there. They showed us to our […] room, offered to help bring our bags in from our car & generally made us feel welcome. The food was first class with the portions not to big & not to small & all the staff are very welcoming & easy to get on with. My wife has coeliac disease which was not a problem at this hotel as they catered for her every needs. I booked a standard club room & after leaving a message asking if we could have a view of the grounds as this was a surprise for my wife, found that the hotel had very generously upgraded us (complimentary) to a executive room free of charge. The decor was brilliant and the part of the hotel we stayed in was only 4 months old. Generally speaking we had an amazing stay the hotel staff, food, leisure facilities and rooms are faultless & I would recommend this place to anyone. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great service, fab food!"
Had a nice stop over, lovely surroundings, great food and polite and pleasant staff. Our only fault was the rooms wernt as clean as they could of been, bit dusty and cobwebsGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Lovely hotel, new, immaculately clean, great amenities, our room was the same except absolutely boiling hot!! A mobile air con unit was provided but the patio door had to be open for the extractor pipe. I had to leave the unit on and the patio door open all night, I didn't sleep a wink with the noise and worry that some one was going to get in as our […] room was on the ground floor and looked over woodland. The following morning I asked to be moved, I was upgraded at no extra charge and was very happy with the service. Food was lovely in the restauraunt, the cooked breakfast was average. "Doesn't live up to expectations"
Nice hotel but overpriced for the service you get. I have stayed in a lot better for a lot less £500 for 2 nights and they forgot to make our room up on the second day I had to go to reception at 18:00 to ask for it doing. If you pay a high price you expect high service. Plenty more fish in the sea to try so I won't be rushing back.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hot rooms and no air con!"
The breakfast was fantastic but expensive. Food in the bar was also excellent but the service a little slow. The hotel is quite beautiful in terms of setting and room decor but (and this is a big but) the room was hot and airless. With only a small window and no air conditioning, this was very uncomfortable. Overall we were left feeling disappointe […] d. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Lacks the "wow" factor"
Very friendly and knowledgable staff,The room was very well decorated but lacked functionality, for instance difficult to watch television lying in bed, nowhere to stand toiletries in the bathroom. Our room was on the 3rd floor and we only had Velux windows so we had absolutely no view and when it rained we had to close them. The food was good but lacked […] that "wow" factor. "Excellent weekend visit"
Having stayed in various 5star hotels around the world I must say this hotel was fantastic and lived up to expectations. Only complaint is that some staff did more than others which meant service on occasions suffered. Special mention to Sabah in the restaurant who was fantastic.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel is nothing short of excellent. Very new and spotlessly clean with quality wherever you look. Staff were excellent and very welcoming. A true five star experience and one we would like to repeat in the future.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice but overpriced"
We had booked a courtyard room which had a small living room and bathroom downstairs and the bedroom upstairs. We weren't advised that the bathroom was downstairs which was inconvenient. Also the welcome message on the tv screen in our room had not been updated and still had the name of the occupant from the night before - just a small detail but when […] claiming to be 5* would have expected this to be right. Food was good but the menu was too limited - basically just steak or fish. All in all a pleasant stay but overpriced and probably won't return - there are hotels as good if not better for less money. "What a find!"
Having stayed in the. Whitby area many times over the years we have got used to 'average' hotels so it was a great surprise to discover this new hotel which brings true quality and service to the area. The hotel staff were incredibly helpful and the room was top notch. An excellent hotel and definitely one we will be using again - next time with an […] opportunity to try out the spa! "Perfect relaxing getaway"
Raithwaite retreat has been recently restored to a very high standard. The interior, fixture and fittings are pretty much immaculate throughout. It is situated about 1 mile from Sandend and 2 miles from Whitby. The service was excellent and as it should be and expected for a hotel of this calibre. Overall we would recommend Raithwaite without hesitation […] and we intend to return. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Lovely hotel, some reservations.."
My husband and I stayed at this hotel recently for one night on a B&B basis. It a lovely new hotel in a lovely spot although there is a lot of construction work going on around it. The Club room we had was comfortable but a little on the small size. The pool was lovely but got a bit crowded. It would have been helpful to be told at reception that you […] needed to present yourself to the spa reception in your white robe and slippers! We looked at the restaurant menu, it was quite pricey and the side dishes all £3. The set menu had dishes on that did not appeal to us so we decided to go for a bar meal in the Poachers Bar. The menu stated that the pies would be served with seasonal vegetables We presumed this would include potatoes of some description. The meals arrived with vegetables that were practically raw and inedible! On telling the waiter this he said he would tell the chef but we were not offered any discount on the bar meal. Drinks service was very poor and we were ignored so we left early. Next morning a wonderful breakfast buffet was served but again the service let it down. We had to ask for more coffee and toast. Overall we would stay again but eat in Whitby or Sandssend Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

A stunningly tranquil location yet within easy access (via car) to town centre & beach. If you like walking, there are walks from the hotel through the grounds, to both beach & town - a lovely concept. Quality furnishing & fittings & very helpful staff. All in all, a peaceful escape.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Raithwaite Hall Hotel - beautiful spa hotel."
Raithwaite Hall Hotel is a little gem of a retreat on the edge of Whitby. Superb, really high quality rooms with quality furniture and a great bed. The staff could not be more helpful. Didn't use the gym, pool or spa. The surrounding farmland areas are ideal for walks. The restaurant is excellent and very well priced. And they like Westies.
"Would love to stay here again"

We stayed for a lovely 3 nights in mid March. The staff couldn't have been more helpful or pleasant, for example arranging hot milk and toast for my pregnant wife after we failed to find anything tolerable when out for dinner in Whitby. Grounds were super and walking to short distance to the beach was a daily pleasure before breakfast. My wife enjoyed the spa, especially the "pregnancy facial". However much we like anywhere we stay on holiday, we have never wanted to go back somewhere again before now!
"Beautiful hotel, hidden location, average rooms"
03/11/14 FireflyJH Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK
I stayed with my friend in march 2014. On arrival we loved driving through the beautiful grounds. We could hear the stream flowing and it just felt so peaceful! At checkin and actually throughout our entire stay, the staff were extremely friendly, professional and helpful. Our room was disappointing for a 5 star hotel and the price we had paid. It was really quite small with very little room to manoeuvre! Bed was firm yet comfy! The TV had very limited channels and those it did have didn't always work (BBC news kept breaking up and no BBC3/BBC4) again, I would just expect more from a 5 star. It was fabulous having a lovely balcony in the room overlooking the grounds however there were no chairs to sit out there? Also disappointed no fridge in room to keep water cool. The bathroom was my biggest disappointment as it didn't have a bath!!! I really believe top hotels should provide baths. However I have to say that the complimentary toiletries were absolutely gorgeous! The best I have ever been provided with in a hotel! I think when you compare the rooms to Rockliffe Hall, a 5 star hotel not far away at a similar rating and price they are sorely lacking. For that price I feel that rooms should be spacious and feel luxurious, TVs should have more choice of channels and all should work and the bathroom should be large and contain a bath (at Rockliffe bathrooms have a bath AND a shower and a TV in the bathroom). Breakfast was AMAZING! We ate in the conservatory with the sunlight streaming in. The staff were very helpful and the food was delicious, not only was the cooked breakfast gorgeous, the buffet was brilliant. The selection was similar to a lot of 5 star hotels but I was touched that lots of products were local - and the homemade rhubarb compote was to die for! I also liked that rather than just being offered tea or coffee you could select exactly which coffee (espresso, latte, cappuccino etc.) or type of tea you would like. I would say this is the best hotel breakfast I have enjoyed! We then visited the spa. It is nothing like the scale of bigger hotels, but it is very clean and well kept. Disappointed we weren't offered robes to wear and as we had checked out of our rooms we were told we couldn't have any and were just given an extra towel!! Changing rooms were fine, although I didn't like having to go through to the spa reception to get another towel each time I needed one- why not have them available in the changing room? There is a pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room in a lovely room surrounded with full length windows. Very relaxing. On the whole I would say I enjoyed my experience but I am not sure the rooms and spa are up to the standards of most other 5 star hotels I have stayed in. The great things that would make me return are the location, staff and breakfast! But the price would definitely have to be competitive.
"Fabulous stay, hidden gem!"
We booked a "murder mystery" weekend stay (Fri/Sat nights). Pulling up to the hotel surrounded by woodland, hills and the sea was beautiful. the buildings look fairly new, but this did not detract from the surroundings. The staff are very attentive (Simon (Concierge) & Paul (Barman) are excellent) listening to your every question and exceeding on delivery, we asked for locations for clay pigeon shooting locally and received a 3 page printout of options, this was the same with restaurants and other attractions based on our interests. We ate a 3 course meal during our stay, which was divine and the theatrical event was great fun. We would book this hotel again without a second thought, and would recommend it to anyone. They are dog friendly and also have a "Dog Spa" on site, we did not take our dog with us on this occasion, however after seeing their facilities we will do in the future.
"Short break away"
03/08/14 Guest306 Chesterfield, United Kingdom
I very nearly gave the rating as a five, but there's always room for improvement! Have just experienced a great couple of days away here with my partner. The staff are friendly, attentive and nothing seems too much trouble. The hotel and grounds are superb. The spa can get a little crowded at times, but it's well equipped and kept very clean. The food in the restaurant was good, but it was the excellent service and the pleasant surroundings that really made it for us. The room was very comfortable and we felt at home straight away. I would definitely recommend this hotel for a short break away.

Excellent break, the staff are extremely courteous and the rooms very very comfortable. Food in the Poachers Bar was delivered with a smile by a young waitress who was lovely, the steak was cooked to perfection. My facial was luxurious and the spa facilities were wonderful and spotless. This was my THIRD visit and definitely not the last.

We enjoyed a relaxing weekend break at the Raithwaite Hotel. A really warm welcome from reception and this continued throughout our stay. All the staff went out of their way to help and we're extremely polite. Excellent training! The pool and spa area were very nice although not a lot of space around the pool to relax. We ate in the Poachers bar and the food and service were very good. A lovely weekend getaway and we will be returning.

"Not very good experience"

I have to agree with everything said by MarcyNorthyorkshire, my husband booked a spa day as a surprise treat for my 40th, I had a look at the hotel beforehand having previously stayed at another 5 star hotel Rockcliffe I was hoping Raithwaite would be as fantastic...it's wasnt. Very helpful lady on reception who gave us towels and robes (which had seen better days to be fair) and we went to change we were told our treatments were at 12.30 and lunch anytime after 2.30. Changing rooms were disappointing and no times only one locker was free and the socket was hanging off the wall and there were two holes presumably where the mirror had been raised up, spa was very disappointing, nothing more than you would get at a De Vere hotel or even a good premier inn, just a pool jacuzzi sauna and steam, there was a small gym in darkness so were unsure if this could be used. We managed to fill an hour before we got ready for treatments, we were shown to the relaxation room which should have water, fresh fruit, biscuits and herbal teas according to the website but it only had water and two half empty, presumably used glasses. We had Our treatments which were nice but when I found out the cost, very overpriced. I was told they would recommend some products for me but they never and she had covered my hair in oil during a massage so I couldn't leave the product on as I had to shower off before we went for lunch so I think the timings were badly planned by them. I could only use the hairdryer with the broken socket so hoped I wouldn't blow up! We were shown to the poachers bar where waiter asked if we were having afternoon tea, we said we were on a spa day so he returned with a choice of two menus but said none of this was I included in the price however my husband was told the deal included lunch, he went away and came back and said lunch was definitely not included despite paying 'a lot' for the treatments, we argued the fact again and we were asked if we had any confirmation! He disappeared again, now 20 'minutes after our arrival only for him to return and apoligise as he had checked the emails and in fact lunch was included but then proceed to take one of the menus from us ! We ordered drinks and he said they would be on the house, big wow....yet he charged us for refills and it was only a coffee and half a coke! Anyway we ordered, hubby enjoyed his, mine was poached salmon and new potatoes and tasted of very little. Overall very disappointing expensive experience and we will not return, this place is not a patch on Rockliffe Hall. I have complained, had confirmation they will deal with it, still waiting......

Came here 1st time not long after it opened and have been back many times since usually for 1 or 2 night weekend breaks. A few reasons why; firstly and without being an overtly "family" oriented hotel, we've always found it great for our 2 little ones under 4 in that the staff are accommodating and we have never felt out of place when we rock up for dinner usually with both asleep on their strollers or sit in the bar on an evening. Secondly, the hotel standards are pretty good with nice, clean, modern airy rooms where everything works, a great little spa with a nice ambience and an in form chef heading up a decent restaurant set up. Service from all staff is warm and sincere and obviously well led. Only 2 quibbles I would have; the gym should be bigger given recent expansion in number of rooms and most other common areas and also the hotels own website is often undercut by many of the hotel search engines as it can get expensive at weekends.
