The climb up the hill was worth the view. We took the taxi going down. Great staff and view was beautiful. Front desk staff were very helpful in making all our arrangements. Would definitely go back.

The hotel is a bit hard to find. The sign for the turnoff is small and buried in other signs. It's about 1/3 of the way between Quepos and Manuel Antonio off the main road. Google Maps has it tagged at the entrance to the park at the end of the road, which it is not. The hotel itself is beautiful and unique with a great pool/restaurant area. We would definitely stay at Hotel California again if we went to the Manuel Antonio area! It was very clean, we had everything we needed in our rooms and the hotel staff was so helpful and friendly. The view from the hotel was wonderful although in January, the sun sets so far South that you can't see the sunset from the hotel even though it has a perfect […] view of the ocean. When we first arrived, we had planned to put our things in our room and then hurry to the beach to watch the sunset, but our kids loved the hotel so much that they didn't want to leave, so we blew off watching the sunset. Instead we sat out on our balcony and watched tons of monkeys swing around in the trees. Then we went down to the pool to swim. From the pool we saw more monkeys and a pair of toucans! We had drinks and ceviche at the pool (the ceviche was delicious!!) The breakfast offered in the morning was wonderful and it is included! It doesn't take long at all to get down to the beach or to Manuel Antonio park. This was a great place to stay and I hope we will be able to go back! Read more

The description said mountain view...but there was no mountain view really. The rooms and the bathrooms were not particularly clean The safe did not work, and when we asked the hotel staff they said they couldn't do anything. The location is pretty weird since the road leading up to the hotel from the main road is a steep gravel road and is not lit […] well at night. The hotel was great. It's closer to Quepos than to M.A. Beach, but the bus that runs to the beach for ~$.50 USD stops right below the hotel (<10 minute ride). Everyone at the hotel is fantastic... A nice hotel on top of a hill overlooking the ocean. Very pretty flowers and birds on the property along with numerous monkeys. Food is limited in the restaurant, so go venturing for lunch and dinner elsewhere. The hotel is extremely comfortable and offers glorious views. The bed was great, the room was spacious, and the bathroom was very comfortable. I didn't try the TV. The balcony is a great spot for relaxing and looking out over the jungle (monkeys and beautiful birds included!) to the ocean in the distance. The pool was very relaxing, and perfect for […] cooling down in the evening after a hot day in the park and on the beach. Breakfast was very good. Gerald, on the front desk staff, was exceptionally friendly and helpful. I can't say enough about how terrific he is. He greeted me by name when I returned to the hotel in the evening, although I had checked in with someone else before his shift started: "You must be (insert name). Did you get a chance to visit the park today?" He made it his personal mission to assure that I had a great stay, arranging a tour for me AND purchasing my bus ticket back to San Jose (in Quepos before he came in to work). The breakfast was very good. The driveway up to the hotel is very dark after daylight has gone, so if you'll be out after dark be sure to take a flashlight unless you're taking a taxi to the door. The bus stop is very convenient, but make sure you memorize what it looks like so you can get off at the right spot. Two different bus drivers told me they would drop me off there/point the stop out to me, and didn't! I strongly recommend the Villa Vanilla tour if you're looking for something educational and unique, and an alternative to ziplines, hanging bridges, wind saiing, etc. Take plenty of cash, because they don't accept credit cards and you're likely to want to buy spices. The hotel is not located exactly where you'd expect, given the mapping tool on this site, but it's a quick trip by bus down to Manuel Antonio, and it's quieter than the hotels right by the beach and park would be. Costa Rica is one of my most favorite places to visit. The Hotel California was really great in helping us with all the activities we were trying to fit in especially the rooster fishing and zip lines. All the staff were very nice and extremely helpful....I will definently go back!

The room I got smelled damp and there was dark spots on the wall plus some of the ceiling was pealing off. Breakfast was typical costa rican. The plus side was that nature was right outside the door. Monkeys jumped around in the trees around the hotel and Staff and hotel cat's and dogs were very friendly:)
