Picturesque hotel in the middle of downtown Vallarta. The rooms are small but tidy. The bathrooms are very small and the sink and mirror are located in the shower stall. Good luck on getting hot water. We often had to let the shower run for several minutes just to get lukewarm water. All rooms face a central courtyard. You hear everything happening […] in the hotel in your room at night. This includes energetic snoring and late night revelers. There is some traffic noise from the arterial on the other end of the block, and for bell fans the cathedral bells can be clearly heard on the hour, half-hour, and quarter-hour 24/7. What you would expect for the price. The negative for me is that given the hotel's location, the room is really noisy at night. Not with wild partiers, but with buses and other vehicles […] bouncing over cobblestone roads and downshifting to head up hill. Windows don't really close so there's no way to reduce noise even with earplugs in. We stayed 2 nights. If we had planned a longer stay I would have had to check out and found quieter digs. The staff, from the general manager to the housekeepers make you feel at home. It is a very affordable and nice place to stay. The place is so thoroughly cleaned every day that you could probably eat off the floor. This was a charming budget hotel, right next door to the Puerta Vallarta flea market. The rooms were extremely clean, and the decorations throughout the hotel were wonderful. The only thing I wished for was an ice bucket and a close supply of ice, because it was sweltering and I really wanted a cold beer! I stayed at a luxury resort on the north end […] of PV for a few days before coming here. If you want the comforts of a resort, this hotel is not for you. If you want to feel like you have been to Mexico, give the Hotel Catedral a try. It is an easy walk to the Malecon, the romantic district, and some great taco stands frequented by the locals. The vendors at the flea market can get on your nerves pretty quickly, so be prepared. A smile and a "no thanks" are great, but unless you keep walking, they will continue to try to reel you in. If they are not selling a timeshare, they may be selling a tour at outrageous prices. Do your research before agreeing to anything. You won't get your money back if you change your mind later. One last thing, the city bus runs a block from the hotel. For 6.5 pesos, you can get to or from the airport (or just about anywhere else), or pay 100 pesos for a taxi. I read all the reviews prior to booking and thought I had a decent idea of what to expect. Guess I expected a slightly better level of comfort and quality. Cons: The shower didn't drain well; the sliding glass door came off the hinges nearly every time it was opened or closed, the beds were definitely hard and lumpy, and the location was horribly noisy, […] much more than I expected (street noise!) For the price we paid through Expedia, Hotel Catedral was a very good value. It is in between the Downtown and the Romantic Zone, about three blocks from the water. The grounds were nice, and our rooms were adequate; pretty much what I expected. The only real downside of the hotel itself was that the water pressure was terrible, but we were able to […] deal with it. Our main problem was not the fault of the hotel at all... it was the bells of the cathedral ringing all night long. Either drink a lot before you go to bed or bring ear plugs! The thing that will forever stick in my mind about the Hotel Catedral, however, is the customer service. The housekeepers and front desk people were very friendly and helpful but one particular predicament we had put them over the top...We were about to check in to our flight at the airport when my wife realized that she had left her wallet in the safe with her ID, credit card, etc. We probably would not have had enough time to catch a taxi back to the hotel then back again to the airport and still make our flight. After calling the hotel and the manager finding the wallet, he OFFERED to personally bring it to us at the airport. Half an hour later the manager arrived by taxi and we had our wallet. He didn't want any compensation, but we of course paid his cab fare and gave him a generous tip. Customer service such as this, especially in a foreign country, will keep us coming back to Puerto Vallarta, and the Hotel Catedral. Read more

The location is just steps from old vallarta and the malecon (which is under construction), the hotel is kind of right in between both. The hotel's location was very good and central. The cathedral is just about two blocks over from the hotel. The public bus stop is just at the end of the block. Hotel is located in Zona centro but close to the border of Zona romantica so you get the best of both worlds. The hotel staff are helpful and nice. The bedroom was fine and clean, complete with A/C and a ceiling fan. I definitely do not understand why this hotel was previously rated so highly with so many negative areas! The pictures of the renovated rooms was very misleading, as our room was definitely only given a coat of paint.The hotel was centrally located but extremely noisy with church bells ringing constantly and garbage trucks every morning. Hot water took over 10 minutes to reach shower and do not need cold tap on. Only given 2 rolls of toilet paper daily, no tissues and no drinking glasses. No towels in room for the first 3 days so had to walk down 2 flights of stairs to get more towels.Started putting towels on balcony so they would not remove every day. Family of 4 with 2 teenagers. Fantastic little hotel - 2 blocks from the Malecon and Beaches in the Zona Romantica, which is near to the markets and restaurants. Walk everywhere. You could be as high as the 5th floor - no […] elevator - just a note for those with ambulatory issues - they may wish to request ground floor or a lower floor. We did not find it a problem. Well-appointed unit with comfortable beds, in-room safe, 2 TV's, free WIFI through the building, windows open to the courtyard and the unit also had air conditioning. Can drink straight from the tap, but they also offer free bottled water. Showers have hot water. Our unit also had a small kitchen, which was fantastic. Staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. The also offer after check out washrooms and showers for those flying out late in the day, who may wish to clean up after going to the beach. For the price, the accommodations cannot be beat. The No So Good 1) The room safe was not as sturdy or large as most others you'll see; more like a strong cash box bolted to the wall. It wasn't large enough for my laptop, 2) The doors to the room were also not really as sturdy as average hotel doors, however the layout of the hotel and it's small size would make it very unlikely that anyone would gain access unless they were supposed to be there, 3) As for any place in the old part of town, traffic noise from the river rock paved streets could be an issue.
