Just south of Puerto Aventuras, Xpu-Ha’s broad, powdery, white-sand beach is widely regarded among the peninsula’s most beautiful. There’s plenty of room to string up a hammock and relax, sunbathe, or swim in the surf.see all hotels in Xpu-Ha
When you 1st get to the resort site your jaw drop in awe, because the grounds are beautiful and you feel like your in paradise. But once you get in & really see the resort your mouth drops once again because this resort is nice but it's too, too big. This resort has 4 other Barcelos hotels all in one. Aside from it too big, it's too busy and the staff […] is overwhelmed. The staff is not friendly at all, they are helpful but not friendly. I've stayed in other resorts & they change up the menu but not this place. The restuarnts had the same food over and over every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The waiters NEVER ask you if you need anything. If you need anything, you have to get up and get it yourself. I understand its a buffet but they are your wait staff for a reason. The staff members never acknowledge you, with a good morning, good afternoon, good evening or a simple good night. The beach area is ok, they don't have any water activities or do they offer a beach massage as indicated. They have about 3 or 4 pools and 2 pool bars. Only one of the pool bars had music the other was quite. I enjoy a little music while i'm lounging pool side enjoying the sun. The resort advertised water & pool activities, which i saw or heard of none. I had a good time here but would think twice about staying at this resort Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice Hotel, close to the beach."
Fair experience, compared to other resorts. Room cleanliness did not seem to be a concern. Did not re-supply towels, or some essentials unless requested. Bedding and towels, although clean, had unattractive stains on them. Limited variety on the food, only two restaurants, on bar brill by the beach, and another buffet.Genuine Expedia guest review
We arrived at Barcelo Caribe on Wednesday night. On Thursday morning, we were awoken by the removal of all the furniture, light fixtures and tile in the surrounding rooms. Also, Barcelo Beach was under construction so their facilities were not available for use. When we booked, Caribe we were suppose to have access to two al la carte restaurants. We […] were only allowed to access 1 restaurant with a 2 night maximum use. I did go to the front desk and ask for a room change. When I previewed the room it smelled so heavily of smoke that I told them at the front desk to forget it- we would just stay in our room. Also, the refrigerator in our room was non-functional and all the beverages were hotter than room temperature. We did ask for a replacement and this was taken care of. The next night I received a call from the front desk offering a room change at 8:00 pm "if I could do it now." I explained that we were going on an excursion for the entire day the following day so I did not think it was worthwhile. They offered to upgrade me to premium access which included wifi and access to the other restaurants. I had already paid for wifi. I did accept the upgrade and asked for reservations for the next night at one of the restaurants. We had reservations at the Italian restaurant but when we arrived our reservation was for the was for the previous night and were told we could not get a table. I went back to the front desk and they did take care of it. Edna was great. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Nice hotel with minor problems"
The 1-week stay was pleasant. In fact, we have no criticism, except 4 issues: 1. Mold smell in the room including bedclothes (otherwise clean) 2. Insufficient amount of waiters in buffet restaurants 3. Slightly rocky beach 4. Check-in could have been more friendlyGenuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful beach, nice hotel"
We love where the hotel is located and the nice beach front. Safe for kids to snorkel and swim around. This would be the highlight and the actual reason for us to pick this location/hotel. Rooms don't have a view of the ocean (Barcelo Playa Caribe) but the beach is just across the pool. Our kids (8-7) loved the night shows. If you understand that all-inclusive […] hotel meals will not be gourmet, the buffets are good enough to get you through the week. The Mexican restaurant was better than the steak house restaurant in the a-la-carte dinners we enjoyed. Overall, the family was very pleased with the trip. We may consider it as an strong option when we are back to the Riviera Maya. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Skip the Barcelo Beach/Caribe Sections"
I booked in the Caribe section of this hotel. I didn't realize from my research that the Beach/Caribe sections were 25 years old. Had I known this, I would have booked in the comparably priced Tropical/Colonial sections (less than $100 more for the week) or the upscale Palace section (about $300-$400 more for the week). Please note that I booked in […] a Jr. Suite Privileged for the free internet and hopefully best view of the sea. What I got was no internet - the connection was there but so weak that I didn't get any signal that worked. I also got a view of the tops of palm trees - no view what-so-ever of blue sea. The room was extremely dated and not acceptable for my supposedly upgraded "suite". So I moved to the Tropical/Colonial section. The rooms here are very nice and what you'd hope for. I did end up trading my suite for a jungle view room. But after how bad the Caribe Suite was, I was honestly ok with it. Here's another reason to NOT book in Caribe/Beach. Unless you paid for the Privileged room category, you can only eat at your 1 buffet and grill on the Beach/Caribe side and the Spanish a la carte. If you want to eat at the buffet at the Colonial/Tropical side, you pay $5/per person more or the Palace, $10/per person. Same on the a la cartes. It's something like another $10 or $15 more. It is very limiting to stay on the Beach/Caribe side. My parents did and felt like they were in the hotel ghetto. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
I have stayed at the Barcelo Tropical twice now. I originally booked at the Caribe, but got upgraded to the Tropical. The room was great, big and clean. The staff was friendly, always helpful and efficient. The food at the buffet was awesome. There is something for everyone. The a la carte restaurants (I ate at seafood and at the steakhouse) were great. […] Lobster and filet mignon were delicious. The grounds are clean and well kept and the gardeners were hardly noticeable. The front desk staff is efficient and friendly. The cleaning lady cleaned the room perfectly each time. I don't know how guests can find much wrong at this place. I would like them to show me a better place for the same price. The drinks might have been not too strong. But one can always order two and I never experienced a wait. And, who needs to be drunk all the time? Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

This was the best all inclusive experience our family has had. Staff were more than accommodating, food delicious, drinks galore, and fun entertainment for all ages.Genuine Expedia guest review
A very nice hotel with plenty of amenities. Some excursions and paid activities were great (booked through the guest services); other, booked by the beach, felt like a rip off. "Great hotel and staff"
Stayed at the Barcelo Maya Caribe in March. My wife, two sons (10 and 13) and I had a great time. The hotel was great and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The beach was amazing! We were there during Spring Break and it was completely packed, but we never had to fight for a lounge chair. The resort is immense (since it includes access to […] all 4 neighboring Barcelo resorts) and had lots of space, chairs, activities, shaded areas, etc. Food and drinks were great as well. The hotel is about an hour away from the airport but close to Xcaret, Xplor and some of the other attractions near Playa del Carmen. I would definitely recommend this resort. "Second time still charm"
Second time here at the Barcelo Riveria Maya. Last year we stayed at the Colonial. This year, we stayed at the Maya Beach. We got bumped from the Maya Caribe although they didn't tell us this. But our room was in Club Premium section. Not sure what the difference is; they didn't tell us about this either. The Beach and Caribe are identical, so no big […] deal, Anyway, we came back because it was so wonderful last year. I was hestitant about the Barcelo after reading all of the complaints, and the fact that we got such a great deal on the trip. It surpassed our expectations. The staff are all friendly and happy to see you. The food buffets offer something for everyone, the beach is great, the place is clean, drinks readily available even during Spring Break. We stayed March 24 thru 30th both years. Corona on tap. The margerita mix is not good; chemical taste. so, I stuck to straight shots of tequila, and beer! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Hotel Room Ransacked, No Follow-Up from Staff"
We had booked Caribe as part of a wedding party and were put in Beach. After being told a room in Caribe would be available the next day, the next day there were no longer rooms available. After waiting for a supervisor, we were given a room in the correct area. Our first day in this room, it was ransacked while out for dinner and drinks. Both the […] room and patio doors were locked when we left for the evening (I always double check!), and there was no sign of forced entry. Our luggage had been dug through, drawers opened, and luckily only a cell phone was taken. Thankfully we had our wallets and passports in the safe. After reporting it to their staff that night, we had to deal with their "investigation" all week, which involved us having to be in our room every time they checked the card reader (multiple times) and changed the lock. We were told they would let us know the results by Wednesday morning. We had not heard anything by Wednesday afternoon and had to spend more of our time waiting at the front desk for them to get their report straight. After being told they found nothing and that anything not in the safe is not their responsibility, we asked for something to make up for the time we wasted having to wait in our room multiple times. After saying no to massages, they offered to send a bottle of tequila to the room our last night, which was never sent. No apology for our inconvenience either. We will never stay there again, and would encourage you to book elsewhere. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Family Place"
The staff was wonderful! Beautiful beach and perfect for swimming. We were a little overwhelmed with the size of the property at first but after we found our way around it was fine. We were there during prime time spring break so the beach and pools seemed a little crowded and noisy but we managed to find a nice quiet spot at the end of the beach. I […] think this place is perfect for families, lots of stuff to do for all age groups. We went as a couple and we are planning on bringing our teenage kids next year, it felt very safe! The food was very good, lots of choices, and very fresh! The one thing that we were disappointed in was that there are no rooms with ocean views…the hotel sits pretty far away from the ocean so you couldn’t see or hear the ocean from the room. Otherwise, everything else was awesome! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Gorgeous resort, would go back tomorrow!"
We stayed at Maya Beach from 2/7/13 to 2/11/13. We had a ground floor room. Room was clean, beds fine, basic hotel room but clean and nice. Had a patio to gardens outside. One morning a troop of Monkeys woke us up, kinda cool. Buffet was good, not great. Mexican restaurant and Spanish restaurant were awesome, ask for the "Special Coffee". Service at […] the resort was awesome, except the bars. Bar tenders seemed stressed and smiled only occasionally. We saw no one tipping them. This is our 3rd all-inclusive and we seemed to be the only Americans there and we tip well. When we tipped they were almost surprised, very thankful and they smiled and took care of us! Took a tour of Tulum and Coba, see Victor in the spa to save money on a tour.....all day $65, good tour. Grounds and the beach are amazing. We sail and have been to a lot of nice beaches. This one ranks with the best we have visited. Resort is huge, lots of kids but you can find plenty of room to yourself. Seems like a great resort to take kids, Barcy Club looked neat for them. "Lovely place, hair in the shower is gross though!"
The hotel and grounds were lovely, the people were great... but there was hair in the shower when we got there. And it was still there when we checked out a week later. "Great experience, would definitely recommend it."
Our family of 4 stayed at the Barcelo Maya Caribe for 8 days between Christmas and New New Years 2012/2013. We really enjoyed the experience and would recommend it. I rated 4 out of 5 across the board, because 5 is "superb" which is a pretty darn high bar. Everyone always wants to know about the food, so I will offer that on a scale of 1-10 (with 10 […] being a high-end high-dollar restaurant) the food is about a 7. Basically the food is about as good as could be expected for a buffet that is feeding hundreds of people. You will figure it out but make sure to browse the whole bufet before you start piling it on your plate. With the booking you will get an opportunity to book a reservation at one of several "non-buffet" restaurants which are definitely better, so make sure to do that. The hotel is very clean and the staff were all super friendly. No complaints whatsoever. Even when the hotel was booked at capacity for New Years Eve, there was still plenty of room around the beach and pools to spread out. We never felt like we had to plan ahead and rush out with towels to mark chairs or anything like that. The nightly show at the theater is a little "corny" but still fun and some very talented dancers, etc. We found our whole family on stage doing the gangnam dance. The beach at the hotel is great. Snorkeling isn't much of anything, although we found one small rock with a decent collection of reef fish at the north end of the swim area. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"First Family trip to Riviera Maya"
We had a blast! This was our first all-inclusive and we really enjoyed the hotel and the staff. Alejandro is the best bartender ever!!! The rooms were great and the staff was very accommodating helping us transfer our daughter to our room and making her a new, very comfortable bed. Best of all the service was always with a smile. We had the premium […] club which made for better drinks. The restaurants were hit-n-miss; we were able to get reservations for every night we were there but the quality was not very even. We all enjoyed the steakhouse, the Kyoto Japanese place and the Mexican restaurant, where Jose made suggestions for authentic Mexican dishes. The rest were not great and I would not recommend the seafood place. We had Wi-Fi, but it could only be used in the room, so better coverage with your code would be great. Some activities were difficult to get to do but the staff was accommodating and if there were no-shows they'd let you jump in. Finally, one of our concerns was safety, but we were made to feel safe and enjoyed nightly strolls around the property. Went to Excaret, Tulum and Xplore, all worth it. "Third time to the Barcelo"
This was our third trip to Barcelo Maya. Since they are remodeling the Beach/Caribe section of the hotel we were upgraded to Tropical. We stayed in this section last year and it was just the same. Everyone at Barcelo Maya is very friendly and they always have a smile for you. The food is wonderful, especially the ala cartes. We decided to pay the extra […] money and went to Caribe at the Palace for dinner one night and it was so worth the $15.00 per person extra. They now stock Corona in the mini fridge instead of Modelo, and my husband would have preferred the Modelo. But that is just a personal preference. I highly recommend this hotel. "Great place for couples, families and friends!"
We booked at Barcelo Caribe, but when we got there it was closed so we stayed in the Colonial. This place was beautiful! The grounds were well landscaped, the beach was nice and sandy, a few rocks in the water, but nothing sharp. There were lots of pretty fish for snorkling right off the beach. I was also able to scuba dive 3 minutes from shore. The […] food was really good too! Better than excpected for buffet. We ate at the seafood and Japanese restaurants. They were both really good, get the lobster at the seafood place and eat at the Japanese place for great hibachi. We were there for our anniversary and they brought a complimentary heart shaped cake and a bottle of champagne to our room! The drinks are a little weak, but you can tip a little and ask for something stronger (the mojitos are delicious!). I would definately stay here again, along with any other Barcelo hotel, because they left such a good impression. The staff was also friendly, helpful and spoke english. My husband ended up at the public hospital in Playa Del Carmen with a medical emergency. The hotel staff and Best Day Travel were very nice and helpful in arranging a taxi with someone who could come into the hospital with me and translate. I felt safe at the resort even when my husband was in the hospital. This was our first all inclusive and first time in the area, but it seemed worth it to pay a little extra for a quality place. "All inclusive with lots to do! Great Beach!"
Stayed 1 week at this hotel. This place is huge! Expect to walk A LOT! Rooms: (+'s) Are nice and comfortable and seemed to have enough space for all of our things. We used the safe for important things like passports and money. A/C worked well! (-'s) Door handle broken but we managed to make it work while we were there. The BED was NOT comfortable.. […] Maybe you will like if your prefer a FIRM mattress. Food: (+'s) Fresh fruit was always good and they seem to have a good variety of food in general. I went in with low expectations as it is all-inclusive and a foreign country! Some things at the buffet could be made to order such as pasta and omelets. Sit-down restaurants had good food and flavor. Very filling. Friendly staff. (-'s) Buffet food is blah and gets old after a few days as choices never change too much. Beach:(+'s) Awesome! On site snorkeling which I hear was very good, we did not have enough time while there to do this. Chest deep water out a ways from shore, so when closer to the shore seems crowded you can still have your own space! Lounge chairs always available @ the beach. It was our saving grace from the heat. (-'s) Some coral and seaweed, but I think this was mostly due to the hurricane Ernesto. Staff: Seemed friendly to us. I think being polite and not demanding can go a long way at this place. It's amazing what "please" and "Thank-you" does in a conversation. Some seemed to EXPECT tips. I don't mind tipping.. but not when you are expecting it. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Barcelo Maya Caribe was paradise. The room was simple, but fit the Mayan/Aztec theme. The buffet offered plenty of food and variety. The steakhouse had amazing dinner meals and great service. The Mexican restaurant had delicious food, but too small of portions. The bars were great, drinks all day! They need a few more bartenders at night, but service […] was good. Try a Riviera Maya...delicious. The pools were clean and the hotel made us leave when a bad storm came, very responsible on their part. The Carribean was gorgeous. Lots of activites for everyone to participate in. The only bad part of the trip was the price of phone calls back to the US - 70 pesos per minute. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Make sure to make your dinner reservations early otherwise you may not have great eating times. Go to the mall, a little pricey, but fun to do. Pay for the ATV tour, it is an unforgettable experience. Also, the ceramics by the pool are expensive, but well worth it. Bring BUG SPRAY for the mini-golf area and also for walking around the hotel. Enjoy the scenery, it is beautiful. Lastly, take advantage of the nightly shows. They may not be Broadway shows, but are a very relaxing way to end the night. Stay here and you won't regret it.
