There were definitely some negatives: no name posted on building and only reception a maid taking time out to give me a key with no other exchange of information, quite unfriendly. Defective faucet in shower made it extremely difficult to control water temperature. Front door left wide open all evening with folks hanging out - could not tell it guests […] or employees smoking and drinking and making entering a bit uncomfortable. Great place to stay if you are on a budget. The rooms are spartan but very, very clean. The shared bathroom was less of an inconvenience than I expected. You have to walk down the hall but the shower was always available, and the bathroom is meant to be occupied by only one person at a time so it is private while you are occupying it. I came here with my five year old son. There was no sign outside, so you had to make sure you have right address before going in. The girl who let us in asked my name, and gave me the key. No friendly conversation. In a rushed and bored manner she told us about the food laid out during the day and the breakfast time. The whole place is an old Victoria […] townhouse, which means very narrow and high ceilings. All the walls were painted in strong jewel tones. Upon walking into the room we got, I was assaulted with heat. It was about 50 outside, and the old style room heater was on as high as it would go with the windows shut. It must have been about 85 degrees in the room. My son took off everything except his underthings and was still hot and sweating to the point where he was asking for a cool bath. I opened the window, but there wasn't much cross ventilation. Air effects scented outlet things were way too heavily used. We were on the second floor and we slept horribly. The truck noises and car alarms kept us awake for most of the night. My son woke up in the morning saying he hated New York. The bed had a plastic sheet under the fabric sheet, which made lots of noise at every movement. The big shared bathroom was 60% storage closet. Overall, not returning, and for only $40 more you can get Courtyard Mariott with a pool on the Upper East Side. We left in the morning as soon as possible. This place is a modest townhouse turned bed and breakfast. They have small treats such as croissants and bagels out all day. While the beds aren't exactly the most comfortable, it is a really convenient place to stay if you are stopping by the city for a short period of time.

I went to New York City only for one weekend. I'm a student, so I have to look at my budget, and Harlem Bed and Breakfast seemed to be the best deal for me. I checked in very late, at about 10 PM, but that was absolutely no problem. First positive surprise: coffee, bottles of water or orange juice, muffins, bagels, etc. are free to take anytime, 24 […] hrs a day. Then I went to my room: it was really small and had no windows, but there was everything you would not even expect in an expensive hotel, like microwave, cooker (+ dishes), sink, refrigerator, cd player, small table and chair, flat iron + table, hair drier, AC, towels, shower gel, ... Another positive thing was that there were enough sockets for charging the phone, laptop, etc.. So to summarize, the room was very small but it had everything I needed. The bathrooms are shared but very clean. In my floor were 2 bathrooms for 4 or 5 hotel rooms, so there was also no problem with waiting. Next day, breakfast: no breakfast room, there were paper plates + plastic silverware, everybody takes whatever he wants (biscuits, butter, jam, cheese, .. large variety of coffee, hot chocolate, tee, water, orange juice, etc.) and has breakfast either on the room or on the stairs outside or just takes it to go. Very easy and uncomplicated.. Maybe not everybody's thing but I liked it that way. All in all I enjoyed my stay there. Everything's very easy and uncomplicated, nice and clean. The wife and I were staying over 1 night in NYC and didn't want to break the bank. This bed and breakfast was definitely the most affordable so I decided to book it. The building itself is an old brownstone converted into a hotel. There are 3 floors, each floor with 1 bathroom that is shared with everyone on the floor. We didn't have any issue with […] the shared bathroom. The showers were clean and we didn't have to wait for them either. Our room was on the second floor and was pretty big. There were 3 full size beds, a mini-fridge, microwave, stove top, table & 2 chairs, 2 seater couch, 13" tv with cable, and a sink. The ceilings were really high too which was nice. Wi-fi was included as well, and the staff refilled our toiletries when we got there. There was breakfast in the morning. The bagels were a little hard, but still not bad. They had cream cheese, croissants, muffins, cheddar and string cheese. A keurig was setup with coffees, teas, and hot chocolate too. We had no issue with outside noise. Check-in/out was pretty lax. The housekeeper had an index card with the names of people who were staying that she checked off. To check out I just gave my key to the housekeeper setting up breakfast. There were no computers or front desks. We were able to find a parking spot on the street just outside the hotel and didn't have to pay for parking either. It wasn't a far walk to the subway. Plan a little getaway for the weekend. Live in the Hamptons. Didn't want to spend a lot if money, however wanted to stay at A place with some ambiance, and in walking distance, to 125 street And other historical sites. Wonderful stay. Sharing the Bathroom wasn't an issue.

Don't choose this based on the website that makes it look like a neat old brownstone. It has great potential, but they need to 1) invest in bedding (pillows that are more than a flat 2" thick & bedding that is large enough for the bed, matching towels would be nice, but not necessary?}; 2) bed frames (at least - but a headboard would be nice as well) […] that put the box spring and mattress up off the floor (really.....in NYC to have a bed sitting on the floor???); 3) curtains that can be closed easily without risking the v-shaped curtain rods coming down on you; 4) windows/AC window pleated adaptors that actually completely close; 5) breakfast that starts before 9 a.m. (when we checked in, that morning's breakfast bagels and muffins were still out without saran or anything over them to keep them from drying out and at 8:30 the next morning, the same basket of bagels and box of muffins was back out - by 9 a.m. however, there were fresh croissants, bagels and muffins, with bottles of orange juice and some pre-packaged cheese; 6) space to enjoy breakfast so as not to have to sit in the traffic pattern on a couple of small folding chairs or the stairs to the upper floors. The new walls are so thin that anything said in the 'foyer/breakfast room/check-in office' could be heard loud and clear through the walls. We did find the staff responsive to our request for a bar of soap in our room. The room looked like it had been cleaned but amenities hadn't been restocked. The bedding seemed clean, but very wrinkled - no blanket/quilt/covering for the bed and way too much furniture for the size of the room. To have the hangers hanging from the loop of the electric box panel was a little disconcerting. We really wanted to like this place and had great expectations, having stayed in other B&B's in NYC and all over the world, but this did not measure up. We really enjoyed the hotel. The staff was great! Only issue I had was my elderly cousin was with me and our room was on the third floor. The staff quickly changed our room to the ground level. The room was clean. The issue that I had with restroom was the bath faucet was backwards and the water was to hot.

I was atending the Blues Foundation Robert Johnson event at teh Apollo Theater and had to be in Connecticut the next day so stayed in Harlem. This is an inexpensive location, clean, quite but is more like a youth hostel environment with shared bathroom and such. I found it fine for my purposes and got a good night sleep. Has a skylight so if you like the morning light to wake you up naturally great, if not this is not the room for you. Now windows, interior room with shared bathroom. Having never stayed or really even visited in Harlem, I was not sure what to expect. However, I was very pleasantly surprised by this place. It is right next to a really nice park, especially in the warm months. Is convenient to the 2/3 Express subway station, only 3 blocks away and the famous Apollo Theater is only 5 blocks. The neighborhood is quiet, […] clean and very safe feeling. But a really great little service is a very friendly face to greet you every time you come in through the front door. Not sure if they are there 24/7, but they were there every time my wife and I came in, sometimes as late as midnight. Breakfast is nice enough with fresh croissants and french bread, but lacking in fresh fruit. Coffee and tea is available 24 hours a day, a nice for perk for me. We stayed in the Garden room, allowing us to have a private bath, 2 bedrooms and a small kitchen, with basic pots and limited plates and service ware. Not something always available in bed and breakfasts. In addition, there is a pleasant little garden outside of the second bedroom that I am sure is a real joy in warmer months. It appears that they have BBQ facilities available for warm days. All of this would make this a great place for a small family gathering, as the rooms can easily support 7 people with one queen in the master bedroom and 2 doubles in the second room. The couch will sleep one. Disappointing to me for the price was the overall condition of the furnishings. The dressers were in really bad shape with drawers falling apart, the bed sheets were really rough and the beds were sitting directly on the floor with no bed frame. Lighting was relatively dark, and given being on the bottom of the brownstone, there were only 2 windows. The shower would benefit from a curved rod to get the shower curtain out and away from your body. The tub had jacuzzi capability but there was no stopper for the drain in order to use it. Turns out there are 2 B&B on W 120th, this one and one 6 doors down, the other 5 people in my group were at the other one, similar price much better accommodations. Do not book room #9, it is roughly 6x12 interior room, a small skylight and right next to the shared bathroom, also a 3rd floor walk up steep stairs. When I arrived they had no record of […] a reservation, waited for about 30 minutes while they called the owner and they found the reservation finally. Single bed sitting on the floor, there was a wardrobe but basically unusable as it was filled with miscellaneous junk. Worked out OK as I only spent time there to sleep. This B&B has some potential to be a good place to stay, but a number of issues caused me to give it only a 1 rating. Upon arrival, the owner put us in a different room claiming it was an upgrade because we would have our own bathroom. BUT when we were shown to our room, the owner had allowed the men working on the garden in the back to keep walking […] through it, and they continued to do so even though we were there. Completely unacceptable. When we brought this to the owner's attention, he said it shouldn't worry us, and that the following day when they were working, he'd throw a tarp over our things - he obviously didn't get it. Needless to say, we didn't feel comfortable leaving our valuables there. The bedroom door didn't even close all the way. Additionally, the floor of our room was disgustingly dirty. After showering I walked to my room and my feet were BLACK on the the bottom from the 10 foot walk. It shows that the floors hadn't been cleaned, swept, or mopped in quite a while. On a semi-good note, the breakfast spread looked decent, and the decor was simple but nice. Again, the place had a lot of potential. For the rate I paid, which is required in full at the time of booking, I was incredibly dissapointed. I didn't expect it to be great, but there are small expectations and common courtesies all hotels and B&Bs should adhere to, and this one didn't. Read more

This is an affordable way to see the city. We were expecting the "Bed & Breakfast" to be like other B&B's we had stayed at before, where they are extremely hospitable, available, and cook breakfast every morning. The breakfast is continental-style and the same food every morning. Rooms are clean and nice. It was difficult to get in touch with the owners […] (we are out of country and do not have cell phones). There was no one to greet us when we arrived (and the doors were locked so we waited outside for quite awhile even though I called from a payphone at the airport ahead of time) and the workers were not helpful with directions or giving us ideas of where to go while we waited for our room to be ready. There are two subway systems that are within a few blocks walking distance which was nice but the B&B does not provide subway maps, nor did the workers tell us where the subways were (they gave me a map of Queens when I asked how to get to Manhattan...). So we ended up wandering around Harlem asking people how to get to the subway. We didn't see the owner for the first few days. We were somewhat frustrated at the lack of hospitality and customer service for the first few days. I would recommend this location as an affordable way to see the city, but lower your expectations of their customer service before you go. This is not suitable for a romantic getaway and we could probably choose a different location if we return in the future. Read more
