Hotel Ambrose - Montreal

Great rate on a longer stay in the city - very close to McGill and Musée de Beaux Arts, 1 block from Metro. First time seeing a hotel with wooden floors, and that was a great thing for my allergies! Room had a lot of unique charm, very quiet (faced back alley), beautiful chandelier and fireplace. François-Xavier at front desk was alway super-friendly […] and helpful (suggested a great poutinerie and some good sights to see). Breakfast was a little lack-luster, but still convenient, and they were still clearly doing some renovations in the hotel (supplies in back hallway by our room, tv in room was newly and slightly awkwardly mounted on wall, loose faucet fixture in bathroom). Those didn't spoil our stay at all, we had a great time, and really enjoyed staying somewhere that didn't look like the Days Inn you find anywhere. Felt like staying in someone's home. Read more

I loved how the room looked. This was my second time staying at this hotel and both time it was clean and the service was good. Each room seems to have a character also, both beautiful old victorian. The first time, I had a room on the second floor with shared bath. I loved the room and the shared bath was a little inconvenient but not much of a problem. […] This time, I had the first floor with a private bathroom and beautiful high ceiling but the noise from the second floor was pretty bad - I could hear all of their conversation until 3 in the morning. I don't think the people were particularly loud. They were just talking and this old victorian house has very poorly soundproofed rooms. I admit that I am a bit more sensitive to the noise than others but I couldn't sleep until 3am because of the noise. The reception staff were very friendly and super helpful with giving directions and recommendations to 'foreigners' on food, bars, things to do and they were very patient with us. Room was like a regular bedroom but very cozy and homey. I would recommend this hotel to everyone, its lovely. Cant wait to go back in the summer :)

A small builing just around the corner from giant hotel buildings, so the neighborhood/location is good. There were bus stops and metro stations nearby (a 3-day pass for busses and the subway was $18) that got us anywhere we needed to be. Staff was helpful. If you need parking, call ahead and reserve it because they only have 4 spots available, however […] I reserved a spot only 3 nights before traveling without a problem. The building itself is really interesting and made it feel like we were staying in a part of historical montreal, rather than visiting the city during the day and going to some boring hotel room at night. The hotel was close to McGill University allowing my daughter to easily moved into her dorm. The location was safe and quiet. It was amazing. My grandmother and I loved the hotel, the location was fabulous, especially with its proximity to McGill Uni. where we were visiting. It's close enough to the downtown area where we didn't need to drive anywhere. The only downside is that you are lucky if you get a spot for the private parking, but there are enough parking garages nearby […] that it isn't too much of an issue. Was looking for a romantic hotel at a reasonable price and Manoir Ambrose definitely fits the bill. Hotel rooms are gorgeous and found the beds to be very comfortable. Location was excellent - short trip from the airport using the express bus and close to the Peel STM stop. Also within walking distance to core area of nightlife. Highly recommend!

the hotel is very well located , but I think they ought to warn somebody about the items that are uncomfortable for the aged or physically handicapped people about the conditions characteristic of this hotel and I am refering to the placing of the room , that there were not waiters available and no elevator .

We parked on street when checking-in (easy in afternoon to find a space, impossible on workday morning), so parking was free. Safe neigborhood, close to museums and University. The room size was 1/3 the size of the photo, too small for 2 adults who are not a couple. I had asked for a "trundle bed" knowing the full size bed would be too small for my adult daughter and I. However, the room was too small for a trundle bed to fit in it, even if they were able to carry it up the 70+ steps to our room. VERY charming, old hotel which was probably 2 apartment buildings originally. Beautiful old decor, funky stairs from one half of the building to the other, very funky tub setup in our room, which required some gazelle-like moves to enter and exit. The worst part is the plumbing, which is extremely noisy running through the walls and can actually wake […] you up when someone else is using it. Tried a bath at 1 a.m., but only tepid water at that hour. In the morning, plenty of hot water, but you have to be careful because the temperature fluctuates wildly when you're showering. Their parking was full when we arrived at 3:30, so had to use the garage down the street to the tune of $22 for an overnight. Also awkward to access your car on the weekend because the garage is closed and the building it's under is, too. You have to wait for a security guard to let you in. It was a very short stay for us but we loved it! Aside from the absence of the elevator to bring your stuff to the second floor, everything was great! My boyfriend and I stayed at the Manoir Ambrose during the second week of January. Neither one of us had ever been to Montreal, and as we are both students in our late twenties, we were looking for something affordable but also charming, and also a place that made access to the rest of the city easy: Manoir Ambrose fits all of those qualifications to […] a tee. We opted for the "classic double" room and although it was small it had everything we needed for our 4 night stay: a desk, a small sitting area with Victorian style chairs, a double bed with a warm and very clean down comforter and pillows, and a small yet clean bathroom with a tub/shower combo. The room was very warm with a new heating element on the wall and we had one window to the outside. Our little room made us feel as though we were really in the "Paris of North America" as many people have nick-named Montreal. Although many reviewers have given the lack of elevator negative remarks, the stairs were not a problem for us at all--based on the reviews we were expecting a tower of stairs up to the third floor (where our room was) but they were very moderate victorian stairs with maybe only 20 steps for each level--not bad at all. Finally, the Manoir Ambrose has truly captured and maintained a lot of the beauty of its old Victorian past--all of the moldings are gorgeous and the breakfast area is bright and cheery and well-appointed with a selection of foods to please even the pickiest of eaters. The concierge staff was friendly and warm and even allowed us to eat breakfast when we arrived 15 minutes after the closing hour of 10:30am. We will certainly stay at Manoir Ambrose on all of our return trips to this wonderful city. Read more

This hotel is nice, but take note that it is located in the old brownstone building with no elevator. This means you are lugging your suitcase up the steep narrow winding staircase all the way to the third floor. The rooms are nice, with all the basics, but heat is provided by hot-water pipes, so you can't control the temperature in the room. I stayed here very last minute, and it was very reasonably priced for such a good downtown location. It's steps from the main streets (Ste. Catherine, Maisoneuve). It's several blocks from Sainte Laurante where all the English/Americans like to go out. The front desk staff was extremely nice and helpful and spoke English very well. The staff was extremely helpful and polite, and the hotel had all the charm reflected in the pictures. Make sure, if you bring a car, you reserve parking with the hotel in advance.
