Excellent location and good value. Not a luxury hotel, but satisfies all your basic needs. We parked on street when checking-in (easy in afternoon to find a space, impossible on workday morning), so parking was free. Safe neigborhood, close to museums and University. Breakfast was fantastic (no meats - which worked for our vegeterian family), staff - friendly. They walked outside with us to make sure parking is allowed the next day (all parking signs - in French and confusing). Rooms are OK, bathroom - below average. Only small shower in our room, kind of in bad shape...

We stayed at the Manoir Ambrose for a few days to help our daughter move into McGill. The location could not be better, close to McGill, Metro, shopping, restaurants, Mont Royal. They have limited parking, which is very convenient, easy in and out. Nice little breakfast provided. Rooms have a lot of character, minor maintenance issues. The staff are outstanding, could not be more helpful. Will definitely stay again, great value.

The room size was 1/3 the size of the photo, too small for 2 adults who are not a couple. I had asked for a "trundle bed" knowing the full size bed would be too small for my adult daughter and I. However, the room was too small for a trundle bed to fit in it, even if they were able to carry it up the 70+ steps to our room. The result: my daughter slept in her brother's apartment on his couch instead. And did I mention the 70 plus steps to the room? The supplied breakfast was good, internet access good, location great.

VERY charming, old hotel which was probably 2 apartment buildings originally. Beautiful old decor, funky stairs from one half of the building to the other, very funky tub setup in our room, which required some gazelle-like moves to enter and exit. The worst part is the plumbing, which is extremely noisy running through the walls and can actually wake you up when someone else is using it. Tried a bath at 1 a.m., but only tepid water at that hour. In the morning, plenty of hot water, but you have to be careful because the temperature fluctuates wildly when you're showering. Their parking was full when we arrived at 3:30, so had to use the garage down the street to the tune of $22 for an overnight. Also awkward to access your car on the weekend because the garage is closed and the building it's under is, too. You have to wait for a security guard to let you in. But the bed was comfortable, the visit satisfying.

Location was superb. My room was very clean, nicely decorated and very comfortable - especially the mattress. Staff were friendly. Good value for the price. However, the hotel would really benefit from a renovation - new carpeting, painting, a general update throughout.

This hotel is not at all fancy. It's a bit like staying in a row-house hotel as you would in London England. It's a couple of old homes joined together. The hotel layout is awkward as was the access to the bathtub in my room, #121. However, that room was very clean and the bed VERY comfy with nice pillows ... there was also an electric fireplace in room 121 giving it a cozy feel on a very cold night at -25C outside. Breakfast was uninspired but overall the experience was pleasant enough. Not a good choice if you need to put up a client.

Prefaced with a caveat: did not use most facilities (breakfast etc.) because we were rarely at the hotel. Partner and I shared a standard double. Check-in easy, fluently bilingual staff (partner and I speak different first languages). Cute room on third floor (no elevator, but 2 flights of stairs easy enough). Reasonably spacious, nice view with big windows. Very clean, well appointed. Comfortable bed, enough pillows, decent TV (we didn't use it). iPod dock, great lighting and AC easy enough. In short, really nice little room perfect for us. Bathroom a little on the small side, but great standalone shower (hot, pressure). Partner is 6'4 but that's more his fault; he could still use the bathroom easily enough. Booked on reasonably short notice with no issues. No random charges. Easy in, easy out, absolutely no complaints. Would and will stay there again.

Two old homes blended into one "homey" hotel. Some rooms more updated than others- they should work towards a more uniform quality. Good location for downtown anywhere. My complaint - the girl at the front desk ( not the manager ) was not nearly polite enough. She says you can find parking in certain spots on the street if you read the signs . There is NO parking for on the street without a permit. Hotel owner should tell front staff to make that clear instead of making the guests feel like they need to go back to grade school French!

Highly recommended for those who embrace the extraordinary. If you're game for something besides a square room in a perpendicular obelisk, this is a nice alternative. Warning off the top is that there are no elevators and lots of steep, narrow stairs so if you have any mobility problems it's probably not the place for you. But, if you don't mind a little workout to get to your room, you will be thrilled. This is a 100-year-old brownstone in what used to be the most fashionable residential area of Montreal. The old elegance is on display but heavily painted over. Nevertheless, the high ceilings, gigantic windows and elaborate woodwork is nicely integrated into surprisingly modern, efficient and well equipped guest rooms with great beds, big flat screens and nice amenities. Yep, it's old and it shows it but there are enough modern touches to ensure a comfortable stay for anyone with slightest sense of adventure. There's a lovely breakfast (included)/sitting room and the staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful. Location is hard to beat. It's across the street from the Sofitel (think $600 a night), a block from the Ritz on Sherbrooke St. and a five-minute walk to any kind of restaurant, store or attraction you can imagine. Nothing's perfect, though. I hate it when the bathroom fan comes on when you turn on the light and the carpet in the public areas really needs to be replaced but it seems like the family that owns it puts money in the rooms and service first.

The location of this hotel is its best feature. Only a few minutes walk to St. Catherine's and Crescent. We took in a Canadiens game and the walk to the Bell Centre was only about 10 minutes. The hotel needed some work for sure. There was peeling paint and lots of visible mould in the bathroom. When we arrived there was no heat in the room and it stayed quite cold for hours...pretty uncomfortable. The heat finally kicked in and it became way too warm. They just couldn't quite get the comfort zone right! It was either 14 degrees or 33 degrees. It took 20 minutes to get the water to run hot on our first night. The double bed was comfy and the croissants in the morning were very nice. If you don't plan to spend too much time in your room, the location makes this a good downtown Montreal option for the price.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a weekend as I was attending a conference in the area. The deal we got was phenomenal considering the hotel is just steps from one of the ritziest sections of downtown Montreal. Other reviewers didn't lie about the steps: we're in our 30s and in shape, and it was a climb to get to the top floor. But the overall condition and cleanliness of the hotel were fine, the room met all our needs, and the bed was super-comfortable. The breakfast buffet isn't substantial, but there were still hot and cold options, and the dining room is lovely. The staff were all fantastic. We'd definitely stay here again.

I'm very happy with my stay at Hotel Ambrose. It was a short walk from my conference and very comfortable. I nearly walked straight past the Hotel when I was initially looking for it--it is a small townhouse/inn on Stanley. And while it is probably not desirable for persons with mobility issues (steep staircases), the condition of the room was perfectly fine. Clean and comfortable. I didn't really have time to take advantage of the breakfast in the morning, but it was nice to know it was available. A good choice for a reasonable price in downtown Montreal!

Nice simple hotel near Mcgill University...building is charming and romantic. Hotel was sweet but simple, room was tastefully decorated and felt like a bedroom and not a hotel room (a plus in my book). Location was perfect. Steps away from the metro and a short walk to old montreal, place de arts, Mcgill campus and a short travel distance to mount royal and an easy commute from peel station to Olympic park. Plenty of restaurants and shopping near by. Had a great 4 night stay.

The hotel was very affordable and was in a great location for Downtown Montreal. You're very much in walking distance to many must-see places of Downtown Montreal. In particular, you were about 5-6 blocks away from St. Catherine's Street, which is where you will probably spend a lot of your time as a tourist. You're a block away from Sherbrooke St and about 3 blocks away from Maisonnueve Ave. There's also a taxi waiting spot nearby (less than a block away) to catch a cab if you need to go somewhere, including the airport. The hotel itself was very pleasing in terms of its appearance and cleanliness, considering how much I spent for my stay, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. It has a classy, sort of baroque style of appearance, but there's definitely signs that the place is old (which it is). But overall in terms of appearance, you can take a fair amount of good pictures to upload on your social media. The staff was also friendly and incredibly helpful. The staff was willing to help with luggage up the stairs to our room. The hotel also has a small storage space to keep your things in after you've checked out, if you're flight was still much later on in the day, while you went out to enjoy your last day of Montreal. I'd definitely recommend this place if you want a good place to stay in, if you plan to be mostly out of your hotel, but still want a place that you'd be willing to take pictures of to show to your friends.

Entering the hotel was a bit tedious because of the stairs going up and down in between the two buildings. The hallway was narrow and I arrived at cleaning time so there were things on the hallway ground which made it difficult to enter my room. However, the room was very clean and comfortable. It smelled nice and had just the right amount of air conditioning. The linen was soft and the bed was a pleasure to sleep in. The drapes were thick which allowed for a good sleep without any sunlight peaking through. There should have been some a note in the room explaining how the room phone and internet worked to save me a trip from going back downstairs and looking for staff. overall, it was a good experience in a nice part of town.

Excellent location, quaint Victorian manor. Reminded me of small hotels in Paris. I was travelling alone so my small room with dbl bed was great, bathroom excellent with a shower. Continental breakfast included. Staff very pleasant and hotel very clean. It is an older Victorian manor style building so one must expect the condition to be older but updated. The hotel is a converted old-time townhouse in the heart of the McGill/Ste-Catherine district. It is very well located for shopping, culture and nightlife, as you can walk to many museums, galleries, great shops, bars and restaurants. We didn't realize we needed to reserve parking ahead of time, but found a spot on the street so there was no problem. Otherwise, parking can be hard to find! The staff was very pleasant but the facilities are just bit seedy, especially the hallways and common areas. However, our room was clean and pleasant, equipped with air conditioning, large-screen TV and and iPod dock. The breakfast facilities were fairly minimal and several guests who arrived at peak time between 8 and 8:30 could not find a place to sit. But if you could find a table and didn't mind heating up your reheated potatoes and cheap croissant in the microwave it was adequate. Convenient and pleasant but not a place I would rush to stay at again.

Really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. Has a lot of character, and unlike most venues with the older/rustic vibe, it was also very clean. The rooms were quiet and you could not hear any noise from outside or from other rooms -- a real rarity downtown. It was an excellent location as it was walking distance from almost all of the spots we wanted to visit. The service was friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay here again.

Hotel Ambrose is a charming older hotel that anyone looking to stay in the heart of Montreal would enjoy. It is close to everything from shopping, to restaurants and is also inexpensive. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable and it also had a great flat screen T.V which was great after a long day of sight seeing. The staff was also friendly and helpful. I would stay there again.

Room was very clean, the woman at the reception desk was very helpful, the location was great. We were able to leave our car and not be burdened with it. The location was in walking distance to downtown.

Hotel is just off the main street, so nice and quiet but still a convenient location. The hotel itself is very nice, staff were great, the only thing was that my curtains didn't quite close all the way.

I enjoyed my stay of one night. The hotel is a bit quirky - two old, formerly stately stone townhouses that don't quite fit together, making for odd stair arrangements, hardwood floors, and a quaint old-world feeling. The place needs a little work - minor repairs, a lick of paint, resanding the hardwood floors, cleaning the generous bay windows, which were very dirty - but overall the bed was comfortable, the place homey and the ceilings high. It is in an excellent location off Sherbrooke Street, and a great deal. The young woman who greeted me seemed to be less than impressed with checking in a middle-aged woman (me) the age of her mother, but everyone was professional and not unpleasant. The breakfast is a real disappointmen - a supermarket croissant that I threw out after the first bite, unimpressive bread for toast, dry and salty mass-produced hash browns. The hardboiled eggs and whole fresh fruit were welcome and real, however. Odd thing in the bathroom - soap, shampoo and conditioner were dispensed from wall-mounted squeeze bottles that were a challenge for arthritic hands, and there was no soap in the shower - one has to reach out of the shower across the sink to the soap dispenser - a small bar for the bath would solve the problem. While these are a lot of small criticisms, I would go back if I were alone again in Montreal for a meeting, looking for inexpensive, safe, convenient lodgings that are unlike the cookie-cutter hotel chains nearby.

Staff were friendly and efficient. Room was a good size, bed was comfortable. Location was excellent. Breakfast was ok. Anyone with mobility issues might be put off by the lack of an elevator, though.

Comfortable and clean room, big screen TV, friendly staff. Biggest plus was it was reasonably priced for a hotel so close to downtown - Ste Catherine, Crescent, Bishop, Guy-Concordia. Only two criticisms - cleaning staff didn't speak much English and my room was on the 3rd (top) floor and there is no elevator.

This beautiful abd historic converted mansion is close to everything. We really enjoyed the daily breakfast. It certainly made our days start off well. The staff were very polite and extremely helpful. They even provided us with umbrellas one day. We loved the convenience of having WiFi as well. For the price point, this place is a gem. Please note: there is no elevator which may no work for everyone.

I booked a room at thr Ambrose for 3 reasons.1) Location 2) Price 3) reviews. I loved the location as it was close to Catherine street and the subway. It is an easy wlk to other areas of Montreal as well. The price was reasonable , and the reviews were pretty good. The only problem i had was that i booked a room with a DEEP SOAKING TUB which was $15 more per night but my room did not have one.Initially staff tried to blame expedia but it's the hotel that places the add description.I wasn't happy because that's what sold me on the room.I did get a $50 refund but i feel like i was taken advantage of(based on 2 nights plus all taxes thats $14 in my favor) . The room was clean and the service was great but i won,t be back.

It was my first time in Montreal and all I can say is that the hotel was easy to find and the staff were fantastic in helping me find various places within the city. The room I stayed in was clean and comfortable, would recommend to friend and family, if they were to visit Montreal. Overall a fabulous stay and experience
