I had a great time in Mérida, in large part thanks to Misión de Fray Diego Hotel. The hotel is in a beautiful colonial building with lots of architectural details, in contrast with the decor of the rooms, which was understated, befitting the the original purpose of the building (a monastery?). The room was decent in size. I found the bathroom a little bit uncomfortable as there was no counter space at all, so I had to put my toiletries on the sink, or on the floor, or on the toilet. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious, except that, for my taste, the chef was a little bit on the generous side with the salt. The hotel is 2 blocks from the main square on a not-very-well-lit street. However, I soon found Mérida is a very safe city.

Hotel Caribe gets an "A" for atmosphere. Our room and bathroom were tiny. Bed was OK. Our room was on the end on the top floor. The view was spectacular, the tiny pool unswimmable, but it was very pleasant on the patio. The patio furniture needed a good cleaning or replacement. Although there was no elevator, a staff member was available to carry bags upstairs. We did not eat at the hotel, but we heard that the food had improved recently.

Very attentive and friendly staff. The rooms were large, clean and comfortable. Reasonably priced hotel. Good complimentary breakfast. It is a bit far from the city center, but free parking is provided.

The Holiday Inn Express is a professionally run establishment. Everything works, everything is new. When I did call maintenance because I couldn't figure out how to work my lights, they were there immediately. The room was very large compared to what I would have expected to get. There was a big desk and seating area. One of the attractions of the hotel […] was the complimentary wifi. It didn't work. The network was so slow that I couldn't load most of the webpages that I needed, so was unable to work. The windows of the hotel don't open, which is something which I find very bothersome. The bedroom stank of cheap perfume when I checked in and was so cold from the AC it was like a refrigerator. I couldn't get the smell out and the room had only cold air or a fan setting which also seemed very cold. I would not come back to this hotel ever for those two reasons. If your business is in Siglo XX1 and you don't need internet and you don't mind not being able to breathe fresh air, then this would be a place to consider, otherwise stay elsewhere and take a taxi. This is our new favorite hotel, honestly even better than the Holiday Inn downtown.
