Hotel Posada Canal Grande - San Isidro

We booked our stay at the end of our trip to Costa Rica once our tour ended. We wanted to be close to the airport but without being directly in San Jose because we had heard the city can be a bit grimy and one night stay there is more than enough (which turned out to be very true). The hotel was a 10 minute drive to the airport which ran about 20 US […] dollars (perfectly convenient). It is a small place with maybe 6-8 rooms from what we could see, pool, beautiful surroundings of trees and plants, and furniture for lounging surrounding the pool. It was very peaceful, you could not even tell you were so close to the city. The rooms were clean and spacious (but no fan or AC, our only gripe). What really blew us away, though was the AMAZING HOSPITALITY! The woman who was helping us during our stay was extremely warm and welcoming. That evening she even cooked the guests a delicious, homemade 4 course meal for a small fee. Overall, we had a wonderful experience. If you are looking for ultimate luxury, this is not the place for you, but if you are looking for comfort, charm, and wonderful hospitality then you will love this hotel as much as we did! Read more

Let me start with the pro's: It has beautiful grounds. They have some nice furniture pieces. This place is full of potential, however it is lacking severely. First let's start with the weird older men hanging out. I have no idea if they were all paying guests but it was very suspicious and they made me feel uncomfortable with all their staring. Then […] let me go to the room, it was completely out of date. With no AC, the windows needed to be open all the time, which made it loud in early morning. The bed was as hard as a rock and squeaked with every breath. (room #4) It was unbearable! The bathroom had peach/mauve toilet and bidet, to give you an idea of how old they were. There was mildew in the corners of the bathroom and the shower took forever to drain, therefore you were standing in a pool by the time you were done with your shower. We departed on a Saturday, so traffic wasn't a problem getting to the airport, however, it's several miles from the airport so I imagine it would be during the week. I'm sure you can fine nicer accommodations than this so I would advise against staying here. Read more

Let me first say that the young lady at the front desk could not have been any nicer. She helped us with everything including directions to the airport which we had no problem following. The hotel was very hard to find. We stopped for directions a few times before we were able to locate it. The outdoor decor was very nice. The grounds were appealing. […] The room doesn't have a fan which would have been nice during the day. The hotel was clean, however, I had no idea a mattress could be so hard! It felt like we were sleeping on a board. The bathroom didn't have any soap for the shower. When my husband went to ask for some no one there spoke English and because the wifi connection was down we couldn't translate. We ended up putting liquid soap on a plate and taking it into the shower. We were only there for one night. It was not far from the airport and not in San Jose which is why we selected this hotel. A very good option if you're looking for an overnight stay before heading elsewhere in Costa Rica. This place is clean, safe, with charming rooms, great views, and a very nice restaurant. About 20 minutes from the airport, it's conveniently located near Hwy 27. Definitely worth the money!

The best part about this hotel was the staff. Most of the front-desk staff spoke English, and were very helpful - they wanted to be helpful, which was obvious. I'm going to state a few things that are facts, so the reader can interpret them as they see fit: - There is no air conditioning or central air conditioning. The room was cooled by smaller boxes […] under the windows that were screened; they could be closed by small wooden panels. There were two in the room under the big window, and two smaller ones in the bathroom (which helped with cross ventilation). It was really windy. - The mattresses are very firm. The chair in my room wasn't comfortable - it was a wicker chair with padding on it. - The full breakfast included eggs, beans, rice, juice/tea/coffee. They were all seasoned well and were obviously fresh. - The rooms are set up in a V shape, with the center being the lobby area. Since people don't all function under the same social rules, I was woken a few times by either slamming doors, or someone on the veranda stirring his tea (seriously) - and this was early in the morning (before 7 am). - The restaurant is a little Italian restaurant that is down a small hill from the hotel itself. The food was fine, and a little expensive for other things in the area. I didn't eat my salad (what was I thinking, ordering a salad on my American stomach?), and didn't bring a translation book that would help me say "the salad was too bitter" - they still charged me for it. We stayed at Hotel Posada at the beginning and end of our Costa Rica vacation, to enable access to the San Jose airport. Upsides: The common areas and poolside patio dining and sitting areas are superb-- wonderful view, nicely appointed and comfortable. The rooms themselves are well decorated and clean. The hostess on the morning of our first stay, […] was a delight--warm, hospitable and she supervised our enjoying a marvelous "tyicpo" breakfast that was one of the best during our entire stay. Downsides: The walls of the rooms are paoper-thin. We could hear every bedsqueak, nose-blowing, and bathroom activity of the people in rooms on either side of us to the point that it sounded as is they were in our room with us. Sleep was impossible if anyone was up during the night or departing for the 5am flight out. To compound this, the beds were uncomfortable. Also, the second night we stayed, the lovely hostess was off. The evening assistant "Christian" was a delight, helping us order take out food and then bringing plates, silverware and drinks to accompany the meal. But the young man who filled in on the morning of the 26th was unaccomodating-- he prepared coffee at our request, but then charged us $5.00 for it when we checked out (we were supposed to receive coffee AND breakfast with our room, but were leaving too early). So, if you want a steller common area, a view, and a great breakfast (after 6am) and don't need any sleep, then La Posada is a great spot. Read more

Gorgeous grounds, comfortable beds, very nice and helpful staff, and many interesting antiques. Extremely quiet - couldn't hear a thing at night (after the guests outside stopped yakking). This hotel was like a bed and breakfast with helpful and attentive staff. Rooms, main areas ands views are amazing. Shower use was impacted during early morning due to travel groups all showering at same time which meant low pressure tepid shower one morning but other three mornings we had hot water and decent pressure. Neighboorhood is not great but […] perfect distance of 5 minutes from relatives in Ciudad Colon, and the location is secured by a gate guard at bottom of the nice hill where the hotel sits. The hill provides amazing views but our room at the end of the building had wind and noise from a local wedding venue down the hill on one night. I really like Posada Grande, The staff is helpful and very nice, the rooms could use some updating. No AC or fans but you usually don't need either and they will bring a fan for you. Hotels has it just a few kilometers from the airport but it's a $30 cab ride each way so be prepared.

I would stay there again when I have plenty of time to enjoy the peace and quiet. It was very simple, but I loved the ambience. Let me begin my telling you that this was one of the best hotels I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. The location is in Santa Ana - about 20-25 mins away from the airport and about the same from San Jose, the main city in Costa Rica. The taxi to San Jose will cost you about $20 or so American so it's best to plan your trips there accordingly and […] not go multiple times in one day. Anyway, the hotel was an absolute gem! The best part was the staff - they treat you like an individual and make you feel special and welcome from the very moment you arrive. I have to give special mention to Marco, Heiner, and most especially Elizabeth who was one of the most friendly, helpful, and kindest people I have ever met in my entire life. The hotel offers a true sense of tranquility - it is a feeling that you don't find at the larger places. From your room you get a great view of the Central Valley - forest, mountains, and sky. You feel peace there. The breakfasts were fantastic and the restaurant Da Marco which is on the property was excellent - great pasta and italian dishes and an extensive wine list. The staff at the restaurant were also very friendly. The hotel itself has some amazing Indonesian furniture pieces that really helped give it that peaceful feeling. The pool (which I did not use) appeared crystal clear and clean. It was all at a price that was reasonable too. Overall, I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Costa Rica. The room was lovely but the vetilation was poor. Only 2 very small windows and no A/C or fan in the room. We had to open the door for a while to let the cool night air replace the warm stale air in the room. It is much farther from the airport than we originally thought. Their shuttle was $20 but when I got to the airport the guy charged $22 saying […] that the price had gone up. We had a lovely meal at the hotel, not cheap, but quite gourmet. They say they are pet friendly but don't mention until you get there that they charge $15 extra per night for each pet. They tried to charge us for our service dogs but when we objected, they ended up not charging us. On the positive side, the ambiance around the pool was just lovely with large padded victorian poster beds on the veranda outside of each room for totally relaxing by the pool. The landscaping around the grounds was very inviting. The employees were attentive and friendly. We had nice warm showers and the bathroom included a bidet (which we did not use). It was nice to be away from the noise and bustle of the city but I would have liked to be closer to the airport so it didn't cost so much to get there the next morning. Read more

It is tucked away in the hills in a little neighborhood. Has a security guard at the post at bottom of hill where am extremely nice (4 star category) restaurant is located about 150 meter walk to hotel. Staff was excellent; place is very peaceful; rooms are unbelievable roomy; breakfast was excellent; and wi-fi worked perfect.
