"Good, cheap place to stay"
It is what it is. For a hostel it is pretty good. The staff is helpful and the rooms are in good shape. If you are okay with staying in a hostel, this is a good place to stay.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Very professional hostel near everything"
I was attending a conference at a nearby hotel and booked at this hostel because of the price. I was pleasantly surprised that it's only a couple of blocks to the Magnificent Mile and is surrounded by everything I could want - museums, restaurants, stores, bars, coffee shops, etc. Most things were within easy walking distance and, for things further […] away, there were subway stops for several different lines nearby. The front desk staff were always pleasant and helpful and the cleaning crew did a great job. My bed was a little less than comfortable - a somewhat thin mattress on slightly sagging springs - but much better than a lot of the hostels I've stayed in and I slept well each night. Each bed had its own personal light for reading, etc after others had gone to bed and my room had its own toilet, sink, and shower, in addition to the communal ones in the hall. The free breakfast was filling each morning - bagels, toast, cheese, apples, cereal, milk, orange juice, and coffee - and they have laundry and a computer room for a small fee. I would stay in this hostel every time I visit Chicago! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hostel in Chicago review"
Overall a fine experience. Guests kept to themselves but were friendly when engaged. I especially appreciated the computer services in the commons area. Well located: three blocks from the Palmer House where my conference took place and at a much more affordable rate. And the facilities were very well maintained. Good job.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
It was exactly what I needed for a short stay. I knew that there might be a chance of sleeping in the top bunk (which I did), but I was a little bothered that there was a lower bunk available, but the sheets weren't changed, so I thought someone was still staying there. In other words, had they changed the sheets on the lower bunk, I could have avoided […] climbing up and down the ladder...something I didn't want to do at 39 years old. Perfect location. Near the subway and shops. Rooms are clean. You can cook for yourself for free. Friendly atmosphere. You can only enjoy yourself there ! I had great time there.Genuine Expedia guest review

Next to train station, very convenient. One block from Grant Park. Our room comes with shower room, lockers, two sinks. Nice staff.Genuine Expedia guest review
If you are traveling light and simply need a place to sleep this is a cheap alternative if you don't mind being around other people. Everyone was very polite and courteous to one another. I congratulate whoever came up with the idea.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good facilities at low price"
The hotel is good for one to two nights stay. The staff is excellent and does the maximum to satisfy the guest. However, room comfort is not on the par. I was given a room which was too noisy because of a train passing every 10 minutes. The blanket was short in length and all the night there was too much outside light entering the room because the window […] curtains were also short. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Convenient location, close to transportations."
It was overall a nice experience. For me it provides a clean and relatively comfort bed for sleep and some simple but descent breakfast to start the day. Did not get chance to interact with the staff and use other facility that much. So can't comment on that. The cafe adjacent to the hostel has some very nice sandwiches.Genuine Expedia guest review
this place is in downtown chicao, hotel does not provide free parking, I paid 25 dollars to park my car over night. Additionally you are asked to pay additional 3 dollars at the hotel if you don't have a membership. "Centrally located-AWESOME for walkers"
Excellent customer service. Based on each of my stays here I have the following suggestions: 1) Have rooms ready on-time (each stay I've had to wait an hour to get into my room) 2) Strongly suggest having wash cloths available.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I went to Chicago to visit Art Institute, and this hotel is really closed to my destination. The room is very clean, eight people per room with four bank beds . If you need a quite place to have a rest and more privacy, avoid this hotel. Some international students came back to hotel very late and made some noises without consideration, I only stayed […] one night, so that's not a big problem. Sum up, cheat, convenient, not very comfortable. Good for students. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Better than expected. Great location!"
Pro: GREAT location by the loop! Clean room. Free breakfast. Towel is provided. Locker to lock up your stuff (need own lock). Con: Comforter has a funny smell. Had problems connecting to wifi. Elevator is a pain to use - need to swipe room card key every time and the machine doesn't always recognize your key.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Great hostel & price - I always return here"
This hostel is consistently inviting & I feel attached to it now - I've stayed three times over the last 2 years. The two most important things to know: if you're not a member of Hostelling International, you have to pay an additional fee of $3 a night. Second: your comfort depends on the luck of the draw with roommates. Some will be asleep with lights […] out even before 11, others will get up and pack noisily at 5am, some will chat with you or talk loudly with friends, while others barely say 'hi' over a two day stay in the same room. It all depends on your comfort level, but this last visit I was luckier than the previous! For the price, I take my chances. :) Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Sharing with a younger group of people, policy were violated with regards to drinking, having guest overnight and also being loud after 11:00 p.m.. Since the front desk is open 24 hours rounds should be enforced on all floors after 11:00 p.m.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great if you don't mind unpredictable roommates"
Clean and comfortable but I was not a fan of people turning on lights at 2 am. I'm sure they weren't a fan of my alarm going off at 6:30 am either. So it goes with a hostel... Great value for the location, but I'm too old to put up with roomies nowGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Location for the money"
Very surprised by the cleanliness of the room. The location is excellent. You can hit all of the major attractions via bus or train easily from here. In a car, I'm not sure. The breakfast wasn't what I expected. I thought it would be hot food, but it was bagels, toast and cheese. If you're heavy set or have a few extra pounds, make sure to request a […] bottom bunk. "Cant beat the price"
This was my first experience at a Hostel. Wasnt sure what to expect. I arrived a few hours earlier then check in and had to run to a meeting without having time to wait. Just got off a flight and Mike at the front desk was more than helpful in accomadting my needs. He provided me with a room key with access to a shower ironing board and place to change. […] The hotel also offers to hold your luggage in a room for you by the front desk. Was very pleased with Mike's helpfulness and understanding of my situation. The first night I stayed in a 8person bunk. Wasn't crazy about the environment but thats not to say the room wasnt adequate. I just prefer privacy. The room was super clean, had locker for personals. The second night i was able to upgrade to a 1 person room. Much better for me. You can think of it as a dorm room, thats exactly what it was. Yea trains get annoying but I sleep thru anything so it wasnt a problem. I was only in the room to sleep anyway since I was their on business and had meetings all day. For the price and location you cannot beat it. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
They run a pretty tight ship here. The location is in the business district, which dies out at nighttime for the most part. The place was clean, well secured, and they provided bicycle parking for my girlfriend and I. Not a bad stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
If your a younger traveler with limited income hosteling international is the way to go. For a club fee of $28 a year or $3 a night you can have reasonable accommodations in the heart of Chicago.Genuine Expedia guest review
Top quality hostel. Very safe and clean, the bunks were big and the rooms quiet. Location was ideal and the staff friendly. Definitely better than a cheap hotel. Would go back againGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"NOT FOR LIGHT SLEEPERS"
Reminded me of being back in the army barracks. Individualus coming in and going out up until about 1:30 am.The staff was friendly and the room was clean. But this is not the place for older people who need a good nights sleep. A lot of younger people, so if that's what you are looking for, go for it. A lot of Asians. Room was noisy from out-of-room […] goings on, the L-train, sirens, garbage trucks, motorcycles, and other street noises. An "Experience", but not for me at age 70 again. Need an unshared room. "A room without the price!"
I was delighted with my experience at this hostel. I have stayed at a few hotels in Chicago both on and off the Magnificent Mile. it took me a while to realize that the cost of the room in a hotel is MUCH more than it's worth for literally a place "to hang your hat." There is so much to do and enjoy in every corner of the Chicago area--site seeing, […] shopping, and eating at fantastic restaurants--why would you blow your budget on a pillow top mattress and coffee in the room? Hosteling International was MORE than accommodating, even for some one who uses a walker for a mild disability. In the rest of the city, this might pose a challenge, but HI wants at least the place where you sleep and have breakfast (free and satisfying) to be kind to limited mobility! The staff were extremely knowledgeable, talking me back to the building one crazy night when I got a little dazed by the neon beauty and lost my sense of direction:) It really meant a lot and was extremely helpful because nobody on the street seemed to have ANY idea where the hostel was! I might be on the far end of the age they usually see next time I come to Chicago, but I will definitely come back if they let me! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Hostel close to major Chicago museums"
This is my second time staying in a 8-person all-female dorm with its own bathroom and shower in the room. I've found this hostel to be clean and safe. They have lockers for belongings and suitcases (you have to bring your own lock), both in the rooms for every occupant, and near the reception, if you need to lock up your luggage after check-out and […] before traveling further. This time, they did not have enough lockers when I arrived around 11am and stored my suitcase there before visiting the Art Institute. Check-in starts at 3pm I believe. The breakfast is acceptable, nothing extraordinary, includes toast and cereal and other stuff. It's a 10-minute walk from the hostel to the Art Institute of Chicago, and a 30-minute walk through the park to the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium. Bus connections are also available. The hostel can be reached by public transportation easily, directions are on their website. There seem to be many different age groups represented at this hostel, not just people in their teens and twenties. The two times I've stayed here my roommates were quiet and I had no trouble sleeping at night. Hotel prices in or near downtown Chicago are exorbitant, and I have found this hostel to be a much cheaper alternative. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Good cheap option - reminded me of college days :)"
My 2 night stay was a good experience overall. You can't beat the price and it's very convenient. You can take the blue line to and from the airport with less than a 5 minute walk to the hotel from the station. There were 2 little annoyances: 1) When I checked in, they asked me for more money because staying at this hostel requires you to either already […] have a membership or to pay for temporary membership per night. I couldn't believe it but it is listed in the fine print on my reservation as "club card" or something. 2) There were some interruptions in the night - this is what reminded me of my dorm days in college. On the first night someone pulled the fire alarm at 2am. On the second night, the hotel staff came in the room at around midnight and pulled some guy out of bed because he hadn't paid or checked in or something. Both events took about 1/2 hour to resolve. One more thing- they specifically forbid using sleeping bags in the rooms. I thought that was kinda weird but whatever. The bedding looked and smelled clean so I used it. 8 beds in a dorm. restroom don't have fan. At 2 a.m. someone ring the fire alarm, the whole building alarms were ringing continuously. "Great location on a budget"
My fiance and I went to Chicago for a concert and stayed at the HI. We had a great experience. The location is great- right downtown as well as near the loop so we could get around the entire city. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others!Genuine Expedia guest review

"Great for the price"
Friendly staff. Able to check bags for free before or after your stay, even extra large bags. Room was decently clean. Beds were a little hard, but I like a soft bed. Close the L so it's a bit noisy, but nothing I couldn't sleep through. Free breakfast was nice. You need your key to get past the lobby, to access the elevator, to open your suite, […] and open your room. I liked the security of it, even if it was a hassle sometimes (you need your key when you use the bathroom since the bathroom is shared). Only thing I didn't like was the potential to have a third in the room we didn't know. They rent the beds (3 beds per room) not the room. We lucked out though and had it all to ourselves. Super convenient location. Would definitely stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

i booked a room over hotels.com and was placed in a female dorm, the problem is i am a man. "Great location but hot and noisy"
Excellent location. State and Congress. BUT, 24 hour "L" Loop train makes a curve right at the hostel, so unending metal on metal screeching. There are 6 lines that run on those tracks. A/C set on 77F in the common room, but with room door closed at night, room is 80+F. Temp is not adjustable. If you can sleep through anything and are comfortable sleeping […] at 80F, this is a bargain. If not, you will be miserable. My only problem with the hostel is that any parking nearby is relatively expensive- you can use the ramp for $30 a night, or any of the surrounding parking lots, with up to $20+ a day. Other than that, it was very nice inside, the employees were friendly and knowledgeable, the rooms were clean and set up very well, and it was a lot more affordable than […] a hotel. There's a shared toilet room and shower room in each room, with kitchens on each floor with fridges for you to put your own food in (and dishes for use, plus oven/microwave). There was also a meeting room on each floor and a pretty big lobby that allowed for multiple places to spend your off time not in your room! Definitely will be staying again!
