A converted university dorm, Masson House is on the Edinburgh University campus, which is very convenient if you're at a conference there, as we were. It's also a reasonable walking distance from the Royal Mile and lots of great restaurants, castles, museums, etc., and also some great hiking. Pros: location, cleanliness, comfort of bed, 24-hour reception, […] free full breakfast every morning from 7:30-10am with substantial a fruit, cereal, and pastry buffet plus eggs, bacon, haggis, etc., to order. Cons: tiny rooms, not much to do or eat in immediate vicinity, kids who staff reception don't know much about touristy things or restaurants, strangely there's no bathtub or shower ledge, so every time you shower the entire bathroom floor gets sopping wet. Also, there's no free internet. Both the wired connection in rooms and the WiFi is pay only -- £5 for one day, £10 for three days, £15 for seven days -- and you can only use it on one device at a time! So my husband and I each had to pay in order to use WiFi on our laptops at the same time, and we couldn't use it on our ipad unless we stopped using it on one of the laptops. Very frustrating. The hotel was fine. The room was small for two adults, but it was clean and comfortable. The breakfast in the cafeteria was excellent. Now that I know how far it is from the train station, I recommend taking the bus.

A bit cramped. Not abnormal for UK. Good hot shower by UK standards, but entire bathroom is in the shower so you deal with a wet floor afterwards. Good breakfast selection if you're willing to walk to the student restaurant to get it.

The hotel is clean, and freshly remodeled. The room was tiny, barely fitting a double bed, but provided a basic comfort level during the stay. The bathroom only had a shower, no tub, or a shower cabin. If you really wanted (no reason for you to), you could take a shower while sitting on a toilet :-) The hotel offered a decent continental breakfast included […] in the room, and you could also choose hot items from the menu at no additional cost (e.g. eggs, sausages, toast etc.). The location is okay. There is not much around to see, but the hotel is only about 25 minutes walk to the Royal Mile (Old City), or a very short cab ride of GBP 5-6, if you feel really lazy. The stuff was friendly and helpful. The name and the description of the hotel are a bit misleading, however. It is located on the University grounds, and used to be a dormitory. And the area can get loud and busy at night. A big downside for me was noise. One night I was literally kept awake by the loud snoring of a guy staying next door. In the morning, the sound of the doors swinging open and slammed was very annoying (breakfast starts at 7.30 am so if you really want to sleep in - that's when you may start to have a tough time doing it). We were very pleased with the complimentary breakfast--the hot items were a pleasant surprise. The walls were paper thin, however, and two nights heard the man next door snoring, repeatedly cleaning his throat--with a sound machine operating!!! I highly recommend the Masson House. It is probably the best deal in town because of the combination of low daily room cost and the sumptuous full Scottish breakfast every morning. I have never before seen such an affordable package in a European hotel. This room was very nice for university accommodation. City buses take you into the city center in less than 10 minutes. The breakfast was very good. Beautiful surroundings and close to Holyrood Park if you want to walk up to Arthur's Seat as we did.

Reading the web-site description one is lead to believe that this is a "guest house," Scotland's equivalent to a Bed and Breakfast. But it is actually a dorm. So we were surprised to learn that we were staying in a dorm room on the university campus. A very small dorm room, a bit grimy from student use. Very nice hotel on a residential/conference center part of Edinburgh University, not part of the college dorms. It was TINY, the bed was extremely uncomfortable and TINY and the bathroom-I could have brushed my teeth, used the toilet and taken a shower at the same time--TINY. As a University Hall of Residence Masson House is great but it is a long way from meeting the standards normally expected of a 3 star hotel - with the only exception being the breakfast which was very good.

This is really a dorm room. It was recommended to my by a friend living close by. I was traveling by myself and given that all I did there was sleep and shower, it was fine. The room is pretty small. What we expected from student accommodation. Adequate although rooms small. Given Tattoo & Fringe Festival both happening pleased to find anywhere to stay. The Hotel was pretty clean and the staff very friendly and helpful. A bit far from city center tho in 5mins you get to the bus station and then it would take not more than 10mins to arrive to old town/ new town... The only thing that I noticed wrong with my room was the hot water knob in the sink is extremely stubborn to close and the toilet for some weird reason would not have enough water to flush at night.
