I needed a hotel room in a hurry because my wife had just delivered our baby at NewYork-Presbyterian on 168th and we don't live in the city. This hotel was just a few stops away (2 on the express train) and about a block from the station. The bed was very comfortable and the service was good. We were visiting Columbia University and decided to try the Aloft. It's as nice, sleek, and hip as the pictures suggest. Overall we had a good stay and the hotel is an excellent value. The rooms are much larger and less expensive than, say, the W hotel near Bloomingdales, which is also a Starwood property. There is coffee and water in the rooms as well. […] The wi-fi is free and in-room. The possible tradeoff is the neighborhood, if you care. We felt totally safe, but Saturday night was quite loud. We were on the 2nd floor, so there was street/party noise but I had no trouble falling asleep. Slight negatives: Our room had a large red-wine(?) stain on the carpet, the comforter was somewhat lumpy, and the towels were showing their age. Nothing to detract from the overall experience. One thing you should be aware of: If you call the desk to get you a cab, they may call a "livery service" which is different from a cab (and not regulated the same way either). Nothing wrong with that when you can't get a regular cab, but I suggest you negotiate your price before you step in. Otherwise you may have an unpleasant surprise at your destination. Read more

This is a very nice hotel, but the service is the real standout. On a trip where it seemed like I needed help with everything, the front desk staff were incredibly helpful with directions, car service, room assistance, and even an umbrella loan. I would absolutely stay here again.

As good a rate as one can find in Manhattan for a modern, clean and nicely decorated hotel. Close to the subway and easy to get a cab. Rooms are of the "minimalist" style, but considerably larger, nicer and quieter than, say, the Ian Schrager-type super-minimalist rooms. The staff was very cheerful and helpful. We'll stay there again.

A few details were missed in the room cleanliness. Walls were paper thin so you can hear your neighbor very easily. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room features more for looks than functions: night light in bathroom not possible, window shades don't close completely, the AV box for the TV wasn't working.

I agree essentially with the main themes of the reviews so far. The room was large by NYC standards, well appointed, and clean. The shower was lovely. Personally, I prefer a warmer decoration than the somewhat stark modern one that they had but it was nevertheless not too overwhelming. To me, this is a great hotel for a business trip and for traveling […] alone. However, for a romantic trip with my fiancé I would prefer the Upper West Side, Wall Street, or another more lovely area. Aloft has a lot going for it at his location. However they could do a better job. The focus was definitely form over function. I selected the hotel as it was closest to the Fort Washington Armory where I was scheduled to take my bar exam. I had never heard of this hotel chain and was very surprised and delighted by it's style, trendy decor, and ambiance which was only surpassed by it's staff! The front desk staff were very welcoming , cheerful and helpful, on the way to my […] room I was figuring out which way to turn and an employee provided me help without my asking!The room was compact but placement was well thought out and had a King bed, wide screen T.V. extra long counter to use as desk with huge windows overlooking the front of the building. The bathroom looked brand new with a huge shower enclosed by glass-very nice! The hotel itself has a police precinct to one corner and the famous Apollo Theater around the corner with more shopping than you could imagine and lots of nice restaurants. Vacationing fellow guests from New Hampshire told me they were delighted with the location and were sight seeing and were impressed with all that the location had to offer and most of which most was in walking distance! I plan to go back as a tourist since I did not have the time this trip! Read more

Overall I thought the hotel was very clean, but a little small. I expected a little more room, but what do you expect you're in NYC. The neighborhood was a little shaky too. At night be wary people!!! A different crowd tends to appear on stoops. I don't think I will be frequenting this side of town again.

Everything was perfect except the people in the room next to us were partying and very, very loud in the hallway at 1:30 a.m. and again at 5:00 a.m. You should be monitoring the hallways occasionally so this does not happen at your beautiful and modern hotel. LOVED IT and would give it an A.....

This newly opened hotel offers a stylish and functional (small) room in New York's Harlem neighborhood. Because of the location, which may not be ideal for tourists wanting to be closer to key city attraction, the rates tend to be lower than midtown. While the rooms are not large, there is ample space for 1-2 people with luggage, a comfortable bed, […] and a shower. There is free wifi. The hotel is close to the ACE / BD subways. Generally speaking, the room is soundproof and you can't hear traffic or other city noise, but on Friday night, the lobby space is a popular local bar. There was a DJ spinning with VERY loud music until 2am which we found very disturbing. Since the weather was nice during our stay, several of the bar patrons went outside to a small courtyard and they were screaming and made it impossible for us to sleep. The noise was very loud and disturbing. When I called the front desk, they didn't seem very empathetic about the noise. I think Aloft needs to decide what it wants to be - either a loud nightclub OR a quiet hotel - our experience proved that it CAN'T be both. It's not as bad on weeknights, or I imagine, when it's cold outside. Our room was routinely skipped by housekeeping, which was another annoyance. Read more
